Principal’s Introduction

Student Mobile Phones In Public Schools Policy

Last week, the State Government announced a new Student Mobile Phones in Public Schools policy to take effect from the start of Term 1, 2020.

The policy requires all public schools to implement a ban on the use of mobile phones for all students from the time they arrive at school to the end of the school day. This extends to the use of smart watches which need to be on aeroplane mode during this period.

As we already have a phone use policy that meets these minimum requirements, there will be no changes for our school. Our existing policy will remain in effect.

Will and Isla Meet Dr Karl

Two of our students, Will (Year 5) and Isla (Year 3) Drysdale, keenly waited first in line to meet the knowledgeable and charismatic Dr Karl Kruszelnicki at his latest book promotion at Big W last weekend. Dr Karl was obviously impressed offering the children a donation of $300 worth of his books for our school Library and a one hour question and answer session for their classes.

During the week I phoned making contact with Dr Karl to arrange the Q and A session for Will and Isla’s classes. He has a booking system that is unfortunately booked out for 2019. I have made a tentative booking for the earliest available time in 2020 on Wednesday 19th February. This is still to be confirmed. We hope to join the classes and use Skype so Dr Karl can see us and we can see him. The children in current classes have been busy working on questions. I heard some great questions about the universe, Earth, animals and plants and even quantum physics. Well done to the Drysdale’s. We look forward to Dr Karl’s session next year and the books arriving for our Library.

Busy Bee

Many thanks to the parents who gave up their time to attend the P&C Busy Bee in the Nature Playground last weekend. Wes Gregory, our P&C President, organised several skip bins and helped pull together a great team of parents. The main focus of the Busy Bee was to remove the maze that unfortunately has been infested with white ants exposing dangerous nails and wood splinters. We felt quite sad doing this as the maze took a lot of effort and time to build and was quite popular to climb on and run around. This leaves quite a large open space that the children have already started making creative use of. We are currently looking at several ideas such as a cubby making space and six Noongar seasons display. Ideas are most welcome and can be shared with the P&C and myself.

You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.”

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and Excursions

Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non payment of future incursions or excursions

Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.

Reminder: 2020 Student Placements

If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you please let us know in the office. This will assist us with planning for 2020.

If you wish to communicate to me your child’s special needs or considerations, please present your correspondence to the Principal via the office marked “Private and Confidential” by Friday 22nd November (Week 6). You may wish to email your correspondence to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au Please note, this information will be considered when placing your child, however, all parent preferences may not be facilitated. Requesting a particular teacher will not be considered. Only sound educational reasons will be considered. This information will be added to the data we already have.

2019 Voluntary Contributions

Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.

If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Late Pick up of Students

We have an increasing number of students waiting to be picked up at the end of the school day and more so on Tuesday afternoons.

This is a reminder that school finishes on Tuesday afternoons at 2.30pm.

If you are not here on time to pick up your child on any school day, they are required to present themselves at the school office, where the office staff will then contact their parents.

Please be aware ALL students are required to be supervised by their parents in the playground after school.

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

Psychology Week

Each year, The Australian Psychological Society (APS) uses Psychology Week "to increase public awareness of how psychology can help Australians lead healthier, happier and more meaningful lives".

Psychology and Social Justice Issues is this year's theme, being launched on 10 November. The aim is to promote what psychology as a science tells us about young people's views and feelings about social justice, focusing on the climate crisis.

Reporting to Parents

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2019

As per last semester, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 16th December 2019 (Week 10, Term 4)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please. If you have already done this, this information will automatically be saved for this semester.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Canteen News

Newbie Knights Garden

We are putting the veggies that the children are growing to good use. Below are pictures of the freshly harvested beetroot by the proud Newbie Knights.

Help Desperately Needed

The number of Canteen orders are ever increasing. Thank you to the Year 4 and Year 5 parents for helping us on your rostered weeks. A special thanks goes to a Year 3 & Year 5 Grandmother who came all the way from Cannington and enjoyed herself so much that she plans to come again.

We are always in need of any assistance parents/grandparents can provide. Even if you have an hour to spare we'd very much appreciate your time. It's a nice environment, no experience necessary and you'll be well supported so there's no need to feel anxious.

New Term 4 Menu

Attached is the new menu for Term 4. We are going to trial some new snacks this term (eg. Vegie Fritters, Fruit and Museli Yoghurt Cups, Apple Pies, and more). Children will be able to purchase these over the counter and if popular they will be added to Quickcliq for ordering.

There has been a slight price increase to the cost of the 'Extra Burger' for our Monday special. We endeavour to keep prices as low as possible, however from time to time we need to adjust them.

Regards
Amanda Meyer
Canteen Manager

School Banking

Welcome back! We have two new rewards this term for our regular savers – a very cool water skimming ball and to follow-on from the Ooshie craze – some polar themed pencil toppers.

Don’t forget banking is on every Wednesday morning before school in the library.

If you’d like any information on joining the program, pop in and see me next Wednesday.

And remember, it doesn’t matter how much you save, it’s the habit of regularly saving that’s important.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is on the link below.
