Principal’s Introduction

What a Term One!!

Term one has been action packed with so many fantastic activities as well as setting up a great year for learning. Here is a quick reflection: Straight classes across the school, welcoming new students and their families and new staff, the consolidation of our Newborough Way Positive Behaviour Support program with Class Passes and Golden Time, swimming training and two fabulous carnivals including Interschool that we organised and won, new student leaders and faction leaders, school photos, Year Six camp at Bickley Recreational Camp, Harmony Day, class assemblies by Mrs Danker’s Year Six and Mrs Farmer and Mrs Hughes’ Year Fours, the PP-Year Two Cultural afternoon class presentations, the brilliant P&C Colour Run, the Easter Raffle and two Round Table Luncheons with Year Six and Year Four. We still have a few days before a well-earned break and in that time we have a Round Table Luncheon with Year Four and our ANZAC Service on Friday.

There are lots to look forward to term two that commences on Tuesday 30th April for students. Monday 29th April is a School Development Day (Pupil free) for staff who will be attending the Ocean Net (Doubleview, Scarborough, Deanmore and Newborough) School’s inaugural Conference at Doubleview PS. I am exhausted writing all these fabulous things down. Have a safe, restful and enjoyable term break and I look forward to seeing everyone back safe and sound, batteries recharged and ready for another great term at Newborough.

Round Table Year Six

The Year Six Student Leaders are once again running the Round Table Luncheon Meetings, two per term, with each year level P-Year Six represented over the year. The aim is for students to have a voice about their school and for leaders to be engaged and active. As Principal I also really enjoy hearing what the students like and what they see for our school.

Two children from each class are chosen by their teachers to represent the class joining the leaders and myself for a working lunch. To start the year our first Round Table Luncheon held on Thursday 28th March was with the Year Sixes represented by Michael, Manu, Bella and Suzana. Our Student Leaders are Lily, Mason, Erica and Jude. The Student Leaders do the organising prepare key questions, organise the meeting room, liaise with the Front Office to organise food, plates and serviettes, run the luncheon and clean up afterwards. They take notes and have discussions later about what is great about our school and what we might be able to do to improve it. Here is the feedback our Student Leaders will take back for discussion from the Year Sixes.

Mental Health Initiative

As part of our school business plan we are committed to promoting mental health and being at Newborough Primary School and as such we are on a journey of continuous improvement. We have recently made the commitment to becoming a ‘Be You’ mentally healthy learning community. This commitment states that we are we committed to supporting the children, young people, staff and families within our learning community to achieve their best possible mental health. Through our focus on continuous improvement and our policies and practices, we work towards building and maintaining a positive, inclusive and resilient learning community.

A mentally healthy ‘Be You’ Learning community is one where everyone’s is empowered to use their voice and where we recognise the importance of ensuring every family can contribute to a whole-setting approach to promote the metal health and wellbeing for children and young people. As such we will be surveying our learning community. The ‘Be You’ Family Survey is designed to help gather mental health and well-being related perceptions of all parent and carers within our learning community. Reponses gathered from parents and carers can help highlight what we are doing well and what we can do better as part of our commitment to continuous improvement.

We would like every family to engage in a family survey. You can access the survey through the following link:

https://secure.peoplepulse.com.au/survey.php?mid=uNo38ypjA1yd2cg3n16fskyl98qq1

This survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete and includes 26 questions.

The survey has an introduction and you will need to commence the survey by finding our learning community (See image below). The online survey platform is sensitive to punctuation so if the search does not bring up our school name please check this first. It may take a moment to filter and bring up the appropriate learning community options.

Your responses are anonymous and although every question may not seem relevant please answer each honestly and as best you can.

There are no right or wrong answers and no one will be assessed on their results.

If you have several children attending the school, please respond to questions from an overall perspective.

We will also be gathering information from students through a student survey that will be conducted with Years 4-6 students during class time. If you do not wish your child to be involved, please notify the school or myself

Information sheets regarding both the Family Survey and Child Survey are available on request from the school if you would like further information.

We appreciate your time and commitment to working towards creating a more mentally health learning community for all. Once all anonymous survey responses are collated, we will be able to identify needs and prioritise next steps.

Thanking you. Mental Health Action Team. Newborough Primary School

School Kitchen Gardens Help Wanted

Can you help with our Kitchen Gardens?

With winter approaching and the Newbie Knights and classes not far from wanting to do some planting and growing we need to get teams of ‘Gardening Gurus’ to help prepare the Kitchen Gardens and assist.

This could be in a range of forms from coming in and working in a team or individually during school time or outside of school hours. There is a lot of work to be done as the gardens have become quite overgrown and messy. Parents, grandparents, family or friends of Newborough are all welcome.

If you know of anyone or can help please contact John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au

Djeran (April – May)

The Nyoongar Season ‘Djeran' is represented by the colour green as it is the time of the year where the cooler weather begins.

Djeran season sees a break in the really hot weather. A key indicator of the change of season is the cool nights that bring a dewy presence in the early mornings.

The winds will also change, especially in their intensity, with light breezes generally swinging from southerly directions. Many flying ants can be seen cruising around in the light winds.

Djeran is a time of red flowers, especially from the red flowering gum (Corymbiaficifolia), as well as the smaller and more petite flowers of the summer flame(Beaufortia aestiva).

As you travel around the Perth area, you may also notice the red 'rust' and seed cones forming on the male and female she oaks(Allocasuarina fraseriana).

Banksias, like our school logo Banksia Menzies pictured, start to display their flowers, ensuring that there are nectar food sources for the many small mammals and birds that rely upon them.

Traditionally, foods at this time of year included the zamia seeds that had been collected and stored for treatment during the previous season.

The root bulbs of the yanget (Bullrushes),fresh water fish, frogs and turtles were also common foods.

As the season progresses, the nights will become cooler and damp. The onset of cool and rainy days meant that traditional mia mias (houses or shelters) were repaired and updated to make sure they were waterproofed and facing in the right direction in readiness for the deep wintery months to come.

Design & Technology – Year 3 Room 6

This term in Design and Technology our class has been exploring the design and development of what an “Ideal Classroom” would look like and how it assists learning. We initially brainstormed ideas and discussed what is working well in our classroom and what is not working well. The students then specifically investigated aspects of safety, practicality/storage and space/flow/access. Small groups were formed and the students surveyed other classrooms for their input. Information was gathered and put into a new design plan. On Wednesday, the students were finally able to construct their ideal classroom with various materials. The students were very engaged and displayed all four of the Newborough values.

SPORT REPORT

Interschool Swimming Carnival.

On Friday 29th March, our team of 49 enthusiastic swimmers from Years 4 – 6 travelled to Churchlands Senior High School to represent their school for our annual Interschool Swimming Carnival. Our students competed against students from the Central Coastal District comprising of Glengarry, Duncraig, Hillarys and Newborough Primary Schools.

With magnificent warm Autumn weather, our students showed great effort to challenge themselves against the best swimmers from the three other schools. Our school Captains, of Holly Boshart and Luke Austin along with our Vice-Captains of Suzana Brankovic and Jude Shen led superbly demonstrating excellent leadership skills as did all the other children who willingly assisted their teachers in the bay when the leaders were swimming.

All of the children were wonderfully behaved and demonstrated excellent team spirit and sportsmanship and were superb ambassadors representing the school demonstrating the ‘Newborough Way’ of respect, kindness, team work and challenging themselves.

Congratulations to all the students from all of the schools on your performances at the carnival. Once again, both the faction and interschool carnivals have shown how swimming training and lessons can make a significant contribution to the children’s swimming ability and water confidence skills. The final results this year differed to last year. Hillarys who finished in fourth place in 2018, finished strongly in second place. Duncraig who won the carnival in 2018, finished in third place, Glengarry who finished in second place in 2018, finished in fourth place and Newborough who finished in second place in 2018, finished in first place.

This year, it was Newborough’s turn to host the carnival and along with that responsibility a team of volunteers and staff are required to ensure the carnival ran smoothly for the children and spectators to enjoy.

I had a tremendous response for parent helpers to assist at the carnival and I would like to thank you all your wonderful efforts on the day which were greatly appreciated by all of the staff, parents and students from each of the schools participating.

Once again, thank you to our wonderful parents for your ongoing support and assistance with the after-school training sessions and to the many staff members who also gave up their time to assist at training after school hours.

I would also like to thank all of the Newborough staff for all your support and assistance with the preparation, organisation and implementation of both carnivals this year. A fantastic effort once again from the Newborough community.

Final Placings

1st Newborough

- 410 points

2nd Hillarys

- 376 points

3rd Duncraig

- 351 points

4th Glengarry

- 292 points

Congratulations to the following children for being awarded with a Champion medallion.

Year 4 Girl Runner-Up Champion

- Sarchi Parker

Year 5 Girl Champion

- Zinnia Blaine

Year 5 Boy Champion

- Archie Elton

Year 6 Girl Champion

- Holly Boshart

We would like to sincerely congratulate all of the competitors selected for their outstanding efforts. Well done and congratulations girls and boys on your fabulous efforts, sportsmanship and team work throughout the carnival.

P&C News

Well surprisingly Term 1 is almost complete and cooler mornings are with us, which will be good news for some and bad news for others and probably wont affect the students at Newborough much, who will continue in summer clothing no matter what the temperature.

Last weeks colour run was a huge success and really great fun. As I walk around the school I can still see tinges of pink and green in the hair of the fairer kids. As far as I’m aware there were no major injuries and the kids participated with lots of enthusiasm, as did some of the teachers who were particularly good at squirting the colour.

A special thanks goes to the organising committee and in particular Carly Fowkes who brought it all together.

At our last meeting we planned out most of the year and there will be some more enjoyable activities for everyone to join in. Stay tuned for more details.

The P & C wishes everyone a restful holiday and peaceful Easter.

See you next term

Wes Gregory (President)

Colour Run4Fun!

We are thrilled to announce that our School Run4Fun Colour Explosion was a huge success. What an awesome day that was had by all involved. We had close to 200 Newborough children participate on the day, plus some older siblings returning to join in the fun! Thank you to each and every one of you who supported the fundraiser – we couldn’t have done it without you.

It was wonderful to see the spirit and enthusiasm that was displayed in supporting our school and of course the smiles on the student’s faces. What a blast of colour (and foam) it was! We can’t wait to do it again in the future.

Now the exciting part – finalising donations (seeing how much we raised for our kids) and ordering your prizes! Students who raised $10 or more will be entitled to a prize. You can mix and match your prizes if you raised $20 or more. Please refer to page eight (8) of your Sponsorship Form for more details.

You have two options to order your prize/s. Please complete and return the back page of the Sponsorship Form to the school office or login to create a Profile Page below (online is preferable if possible). You can enter the amount of cash donations you received using the online system. The cash then needs to be returned to the office along with your form (if misplaced then please be sure to include a piece of paper with your name, room number and an email contact) so we can verify and log that your cash has been received. Once this has been done you will be able to order your prize using the online system. All donations, cash and forms need to be returned by Wednesday 10thApril. You will then have 7 days to order your prizes.

http://www.myprofilepage.com.au/

The sooner we finalise the prize order the sooner the students will receive their prizes. Thanks again for your support.

Kind Regards,

Newborough P&C
(Any questions contact: Carly Fowkes – newboroughpcsec@gmail.com)

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is below.
