Principal’s Introduction

Taekwan – Do Championship – Congratulations Reagan Horobin

Congratulations to Reagan Horobin (Year 4, Room 12) who recently attended the CHITF World Taekwon-Do Championships in Melbourne. Over 500 competitors represented over 20 countries from around the world. Reagan displayed our PBS behaviour of ‘Challenge Yourself’ admirably, competing in the U13 boys section for Patterns (prearranged movements) and sparring, coming away with a bronze medal for patterns against a tough group of 20 boys. He then won gold for his sparring section coming back from behind against good opposition in a closely fought final.

Well done, Reagan!

STEAM Award Year 4 Room 12 – Alex Yates

Alex is a reliable and diligent student, who consistently demonstrates our four school values. He challenges himself in all areas of STEAM and is a pleasure to teach. Alex listens carefully, pays close attention to details and always works to the best of his ability. He demonstrates a mature understanding of mathematical concepts and is successful at problem solving.

Alex is a terrific team member, working hard not only for himself, often going above and beyond to produce detailed work, but also to support his peers. Well done, Alex!

Newbie Knights 2019

I am quite overwhelmed by the popularity and quality of applications for students from years 3-6 to become Newbie Knights. Newborough kids are really interested in the environment and how they can help, indeed lead the future. There were 58 applications, 20 boys and 38 girls for the 25 positions. I will be having a really close read and lots of discussions with teachers to pick students who really are passionate and want to make a difference for our school and the world. For those who don’t become an official Newbie Knight there will be lots of other opportunities to become involved and I will target these children for different projects and involvement over the year.

Next term the Newbie Knights will spend a day with Millennium Kids on Friday 14th June exploring what is important for Newborough Kids and what we can do at our school. Judging from the applications recycling comes out strongly along with growing vegies and eating, also playing in the nature playground and observing and looking after animals. How noble and fun. We will be working with the Newbie Knights to plan what we can realistically take on board this year and into the future. One of our tasks will be ‘How can we involve all our students?’ This is really exciting and something our school will grow and become leaders in our area.

https://www.millenniumkids.com.au/

Now to read these fantastic applications and make some big decisions.

Koolbardi Saved

We have several magpie or as the Noongar peoples say Koolbardi families that live in our trees behind the Science/Music Block. One of the youngsters ventured through the Science room door, panicked and flew high and then found a gap in the ceiling. It couldn’t get out and was too high for us to try. It squawked and scratched making quite a noise with its family anxiously gathered outside. This provided a wonderful learning opportunity for students but was also quite a distraction and serious situation for one of our protected birds. The good news was that we were able to convince our faults people they needed to respond and help.

This they did with a scissor lift and removal of panels finally getting the scared young bird out and reunited with family. Koolbardis have face recognition capacity and communicate with each other. They remember good people and bad. Generally, if they feel safe they don’t swoop or menace. I am sure they will appreciate what has happened as we were happy for them and they choose to live near our school.

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

Ripper Reader Program

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Mums and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time!please see Mrs Tennant (vicki.tennant@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 9 or Mrs Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7 o.

HARMONY DAY – Thursday 21ST March 2019

We are each unique and beautiful, but together we are a masterpiece.

Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Harmony Day is held every year on 21st Marc and this day also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

At Newborough Primary School, we recognised Harmony Day with the whole school singing of “On Song” in front of our beautiful Harmony Day flowers made by each class. Thank you to all students, parents and staff for wearing orange on the day as the international colour of Harmony.

Kindy Green group’s Harmony Day activities. We had a picnic with our friends, and made an aeroplane in the sandpit to visit our families who live in NZ, France, Scotland and the Philippines.

EDU-DANCE – Term 2

Edu-dance will start on the first Wednesday back in Term 2 (1st May) and run every Wednesday and Thursday for until the end of Week 9.

This year, due the constraints we are facing to use Karrinyup Sports Hall during school time, we are going to have two Edu-dance concerts, rather than just the one. We will have all of the classes timetabled to dance on a Wednesday perform their concert on WEDNESDAY 26th June at 1.40pm in our undercover area and all the classes timetabled to dance on a Thursday to perform on THURSDAY 27th JUNE at 1.40pm in our undercover area.

We would like all students to participate in the Edu-dance classes from WEEK 1 next term. Students will only be able to do this if they have returned their Permission Form and paid in full for the lesson. Lessons are $31.00 per student.

We urge all parents who may have difficulty paying for this incursion to contact Sharon Singleton immediately to make a payment plan please and not leave payment until the very last minute.

NEWBOROUGH CARES

The cupboard is bare!

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to meet some of that. To do this we are going to offer the opportunity for families to donate non-perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers as needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs or another school that is in a difficult situation.

Some suggestions of what to donate : long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers. Think about things that can be put together as a basic meal…

The other option is for people to donate a $10 Woolworths gift card. This would be used by me (not given to families) when there is an immediate need that the stock I have doesn’t meet.

The plan is for families at Newborough to bring food items to Room 11 before school during week 8 (25th – 29th March), any day that week.

Thanks,

Ali Dee
School Chaplain

Faction Swimming

On Friday 15 March, the children in Years 4 – 6 travelled to Churchlands Senior High School to participate in NPS annual Faction Swimming Carnival. With much anticipation from the all of the students, parents, the Year 4s participating for the first time and the new Newborough students, the carnival was enjoyed by all. The swimming carnival is a wonderful opportunity for every child to develop their swimming confidence and swimming abilities by being involved in a range of activities from novelty fun events to competitive racing depending on their individual ability level.

With a very warm Autumn day, and a very enticing pool, the students representing their factions participated with great effort and determination to do their best for their team. For some children, it was their first time in a swimming carnival and for many children they had to overcome their own anxiety to demonstrate courage, determination and persistence to swim the 25m. No matter where the children finished in any event, they were rewarded with the knowledge that they had succeeded in their personal challenge and that their efforts were acknowledged by their family, friends and teachers who had supported them throughout their event.

All of the children who participated, demonstrated the Newborough values of Respect, Kindness, Team Work and Challenge Yourself. All around the pool area the children’s endeavour, good team spirit and sportsmanship were on display. The carnival is planned for maximum participation at the children’s level of swimming experience, and all of the children who attended had a fun and rewarding experience. It was delightful to see so many children smiling, cheering, encouraging and congratulating their team mates during all of the events.

Once again, there was a wonderful turn out of parents, grandparents, friends and former students to support the children. Our carnivals would not be as successful and memorable for the children without the wonderful assistance and support that the parents and staff provide. I would like to sincerely thank all parents, staff and former students who helped with training and all of the jobs before, during and after the carnival. Special thanks to Mr Stenhouse, Mr Worthy and the parents who assisted with the set up prior to the carnival and the packing up after the carnival.

This year the three factions were very closely placed throughout the carnival day. At one stage, only three points separated first from third place overall. The relay events were very significant events which eventually determined the winning team. Congratulations and well done to all members of every team for your terrific efforts.

Final Scores:

1st Place – Corbett – 694 points
2nd Place – Manning – 632 points
3rd Place – Connor – 576 points

We would like to congratulate the following children who won the Championship medallions –

Year 4 Runner-Up Champions – Zamia Whitney (Manning) and Owen McCallum (Corbett)
Year 4 Champions - Sarchi Parker (Corbett) and Marko Brankovic (Manning)
Year 5 Runner-Up Champions – Maya Boxy (Manning) and Noah Blakeney (Corbett)
Year 5 Champions - Zinnia Blaine (Connor) and Archie Elton (Corbett) tied with Kalani Hart (Corbett)
Year 6 Runner-up Champions - Suzana Brankovic (Manning) and Jude Shen (Manning)
Year 6 Champions - Holly Boshart (Corbett) and Luke Austin (Connor)

Interschool Swimming

This Friday, 29th March our Interschool team of 49 students, will travel to Churchlands Senior High School to compete against Hillarys, Duncraig and Glengarry Primary Schools in the Coastal District Interschool Swimming competition. Selected students for this carnival have been training after school at Churchlands SHS last week. Training has now concluded for this event

This year, Newborough is the organising school for this event. A huge thank you to all of the parents who have kindly volunteered to assist at the carnival this year. Mr Stenhouse, Mr Worthy and I would also be very grateful for any assistance from 8.30am at Churchlands SHS pool, to set up the carnival.

We wish all the members of the interschool swimming team the very best of luck.

Go Newborough!

Hockey with Jen from North Coast Raiders Hockey Club

I really enjoyed meeting everyone during Sport Class and talking about the fantastic game of Hockey. We learned about how to use a hockey stick safely, and practiced skills like dribbling, pushing and trapping the ball. A big thanks to Mrs Williams who was able to show us her hidden hockey talents.

Thank you

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website below.
