Principal's Introduction
Principal Welcome
Hi,
As we draw closer to the end of another term, I would like to reflect on the achievements we have had this term. We have had some fantastic events and achievements. The students have been participating in Humphreys Dance and it has been wonderful to see them enjoying themselves and participating in the program. We will see all their hard work on Wednesday afternoon during the social dance evening! Many of the students have participated in excursions this term, to give a contextual understanding of the content they have been learning in class: the Year 2 students visited Kings Park, while the Rooms 5-8 visited the Duyfken in Fremantle. The upper primary students have been participating in various sports throughout the Winter Lightning carnival. Many of our sporting teams have been successful on the field which is a fantastic result; however, all teams have displayed wonderful sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the term!
Our school community has been working extremely hard throughout this term. The P&C organised a fantastic busy bee to work on Phase One of the Nature Playground, attended by over 50 parents! It was such a wonderful day, with much work being completed. The students and school are very fortunate to have a parent body that is so invested in the school. I would like to recognise the P&C and all the people who contribute to the school on a regular basis, who volunteer their time and skills to make Newborough Primary School such a wonderful place for our students.
Finally, Mr Worthy will be returning from his well-deserved leave on Monday, 18th July. I have very much enjoyed taking on the Acting Principal role in his absence. I would like to thank the parents, staff and students for their support while Mr Worthy has been away. I hope all the students and their families have an enjoyable and safe break over the holiday period and we will see you all back on Tuesday, 19th July.
School Grounds over the holidays.
As you are probably aware, the school grounds are often an area that gets used by the wider community during the holiday period. As such there is a wide range of people who frequent the grounds. We urge anyone that is on school grounds to report suspicious behaviour, vandalism or disrespect to either the police or Education Security. The numbers for both services are available below:
Police: 131 444
Education Security: 9264 4771
Election
This Saturday the school will be a polling place for the Federal election. The P&C will be holding a cake stall and a BBQ, please support their initiatives as the funds raised go towards our school.

Humphrey's Dance Program
The Humphrey's Dance program has been receiving great reviews from all students and Todd, our fantastic dance instructor has complimented our students many times on their behaviour and enthusiasm during the sessions.
To celebrate the dance program, we will be holding a free social dance on Wednesday 29th June after school in the undercover area. There will be two sessions.
Kindergarten to Year 2 students 3.15-4.15pm
All Kindergarten to Year 2 students who have paid to attend the lessons are invited to the social dance straight after school. Students will need a labelled water bottle and must be accompanied by a parent. Parents will also need to be responsible for the supervision of any non-school aged students on school grounds during this time and will be asked to leave promptly at 4.15pm so that we can start the next social dance on time with the older students at 4.30 pm. If you cannot attend the dance with your child, please organise for another parent to supervise your child and be responsible for taking them home. Students do not need to change clothes for the dance.
Year 3 – Year 6 students 4.30-5.30pm
The Social dance for Year 3 to Year 6 students will be held from 4.30-5.30pm on the same day. As students should not be on school grounds until their dance time we request that all Year 3-6 students go home prior to the dance and return to school for 4.30pm, if a parent is not on schools grounds already to supervise them.
Parents must ensure the safety of their child returning for the dance and being collected to go home at 5.30pm please. Students may wear free dress and bring a labelled water bottle.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries in regards to the Humphrey's Social Dance.

Strategic Plan for WA Public Schools 2016-2019
High Performance – High Care
In line with the Department of Education's Strategic Plan for Government Schools 2016-2019, Newborough Primary School is continuing to have high expectations for every child to succeed and a high performance culture at our school. This also includes having high expectations of our physical environment including keeping our verandas and bags tidy. This helps our students develop pride in their environment and take responsibility for their eating area.
We are now asking all students to keep their bags zipped up and either placed on a hook or in a neat line at the end of their bench. We are also asking parents to help us with this, especially our Kindy, Pre-Primary and Year 1 bags. Below are some photos of classes who have mastered our new look.

Students who have been referred to the Administration more than once during the semester will not receive a certificate of recognition for the semester.
The Good Standing Policy can be found on our website

We congratulate all students who have received a certificate for their exemplary behaviour in Semester 1.
Student Leaders News
Parliament House Visit
On Tuesday 14th June, the Student Leaders, Mr Stenhouse and Mr Worthy all went to Parliament House on Tuesday to have lunch with Lisa Harvey and ask her some questions about leadership in order to build on their leadership skills. They also got the opportunity to watch Parliament sit and see our state's leaders in action.
For lunch we went to the Parliament House dining room where we met Lisa Harvey. For lunch we had a three course meal which consisted of Thai chicken larb, barramundi and a treacle pudding for me. Smoked salmon, Pork Belly and New York cheese cake for Mr Stenhouse, Thai chicken larb, beef schnitzel and coconut pudding for Alice, Lamb and chocolate cake for Shireena, Beef schnitzel and New York cheese cake for Jack and a cheese platter, cooked cod and treacle pudding for Mr Worthy.
While we were eating we asked questions and discussed ideas with Lisa Harvey. These were some of the questions:
- How do you deal with your public speaking nerves
- Why did you get into politics?
- What been the most helpful thing you've learnt in parliament?
- How do you handle all your responsibilities and what is it like being a girl in parliament?
Some ideas that we had were - can we have a crosswalk over Sackville terrace and about our graffiti and how we can solve it. After that amazing lunch we headed in to watch Parliament sit in for around twenty minutes. While we were watching we saw Colin Barnett and he waved at us. Before we left to go back to school, the parliament mentioned us and thanked for coming! All out it was an amazing day and we all took so much out of it.

Nature Play News
With the huge effort put in at the last Busy Bee, we're almost ready for construction! Soon (weather permitting) you'll see the river be made ready for its sand; the logs start to be shaped, moved and fixed in place; and some of the structural play equipment begin to take form.
Whilst these activities will involve mainly small groups of parents, due to the safety implications, rest assured that there will be another Busy Bee held in Term 3 that will be appropriate for kids (of all ages).
It is anticipated that the Term 3 Busy Bee will be mainly focused on filling the river, but we're also hoping to include some fun stuff this time - crafting durable decorations for the area, a recycled material construction workshop and possibly even get onto brainstorming ideas for the Nature Play welcome signs/totems which we'd love to be a group effort.
Thanks so much to all those who have answered the call for large cardboard boxes destined for the bin - we've used them throughout the area and now have enough to cover the remaining area once we move the logs into their positions.
Our next requests for items / information: We'd love to hear if anyone in the school community has contacts who might offer us better quotes than publically available on the following:
- purchase and delivery of white playground sand
- crane and operator hire (Slewing)
If you have any information or queries about the nature play area, please let Jolene know - jolene@terraperma.com.au
Thanks again for the awesome support shown for this exciting area!

Safety House
INTERESTED IN SAFETY FOR KIDS IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
IT'S EASY TO HELP AND YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Safety House is a community based "Good Neighbour" program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It's easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children.
The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association.
You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.
This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help.
Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form.
We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:
http://www.safetyhousewa.org.au/
If you wish to apply to become a Safety House in our area, please take a few moments to fill out the form below.
