Principal’s Introduction
School Board Nominations
Are you looking for a way to be more engaged in your child’s school? Are you looking to make a positive contribution to the direction of school? We are seeking nominations from parents/legal guardians to join the School Board in the role of Parent Representative. There are two vacant parent positions. You’ll join a team including other parent representatives along with the Principal, staff and community representatives that provides advice to assist the School to identify, plan and resource its strategic objectives.
You do not need any prior experience of working on a Board and we encourage diverse membership that is representative of our varied school community. New members of the Board will be offered training and support. You can find detailed information about the School Board on our school website School Board - Newborough Primary School (newboroughps.wa.edu.au). If you are interested please email or supply in writing your expression of interest to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au by 3:00pm, Monday 13th November 2023.
If there are more nominees than positions available candidates will be asked to provide a 250-word brief about themselves and what they can bring to the Board. All parents/legal guardians in the school will then have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate.
For further information please contact John Worthy (Principal) email John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au, phone 99278 0450 or Callan Rose (Board Chair) on 0410 490 482, email mc.cjrose@gmail.com
Birak
The lifestyle for the Noongar communities during Birak
Birak season sees the rains ease up and the warm weather really start to take hold. The afternoons are cooled by the sea breezes that abound from the southwest. This was the fire season, a time to burn the country in mosaic patterns.
An almost clockwork style of easterly winds in the morning and sea breezes in the afternoon, meant that traditionally this was the burning time of year for Noongar people.
They would burn the country in mosaic patterns for several reasons including fuel reduction, increasing the grazing pastures for some animals, to aid in seed germination for some plants and for ease of mobility across the country.
As for the animals, there are many fledglings now venturing out of nests, though some are still staying close to their parents. Reptiles are looking to shed their old skin for a new one.
With the rising temperatures and the decreasing rainfall, it is also time for the baby frogs to complete their transformation into adulthood.
SunSmart School
Newborough Primary School has demonstrated commitment to skin cancer prevention and the SunSmart program through the implementation of effective policy, education and reducing exposure in the outdoor environment. Membership to the SunSmart Schools Program has been renewed till 27 October 2026. The school’s Sun Protection Policy can be found on the school’s website.

Newbro Dads
Excitement is starting to build for the Newbro’s Camp Out, which will be held on Saturday 25th November on Jim Hazlitt Field. The Newbro Dads are busy planning some fun activities for the kids. The camp fire will be going to toast a marshmallow or two, the outdoor movie is always popular along with the fun of camping on the school oval. Final details and the booking form will be out in the next newsletter.
There are still at least two more planning sessions available for any Dads who want to be involved. So come along and help out with an awesome event with some awesome Dads!!
Balloon Twisting Night
By Dan Hazell (Pre-primary Dad)
Who’d have thought that the humble balloon could provide such entertainment. 8 th September was the Newborough Dads group balloon twisting night, a wonderfully fun night of colour, entertainment and laughs.
From the basics of twisting a balloon into a sword, through the intermediate skills of giraffes, dogs, frogs and the more tricky butterflies and fancy hats, we had a great time.
The boundless enthusiasm of course led to mega-balloo-sculptures and no end of crazy creations that we didn't know we had in us!!
A great night was had by all, and we can't wait to resurrect this night perhaps in 2024/25, with some emphasis on bigger, better and more beautiful balloon creations.

Beach Swims
The Friday morning beach swims are back. Meet us down at Trigg Beach, in front of Canteen for a quick swim then coffee. Come along for just a swim or just a coffee if you are pushed for time.
Swim 6 till 6:45ish, coffee around 7am.
Fundraising
The Newbro Dads run our events as cheap as we can to ensure these fun engaging activities are available to everyone. To do this we need to raise some funds around twice a year to keep us cost neutral. If you would like to assist us to fundraise, have an idea and want to make it happen then please be in touch. Ideally ideas are community based and not commercially motivated.
School Veggie Garden Stage 2
It is time to commence stage 2 of the School Veggie Patch Refurbishment!!
Discussions are underway with what is going to happen in this space, if you would like to be involved then come to the next P&C meeting. However first we must demolish the last 4 remaining planter boxes. These are in a very poor state and the materials will be throw out. So we are going to hold a Busy Bee on Friday 10th November after school. Let the kids play on the Nature Play while we dig and cut up the old garden bed boxes.
Many hands make light work so bring your gloves and shovels and let's knock this over in an hour or so. Look forward to seeing some new faces, don't be shy.
Next Newbro meeting: Thursday 9th November, The Saint Get in touch!!
Email your interest to be involved to: Newbrodadsgroup@gmail.com.au
Busy Bee: 10th November
Camp out: 25/26th November
