Principal’s Introduction

Kaya. Hello.

What a great few weeks we have had at Newborough Primary School since our last newsletter. Students have been actively involved in our learning programs and Mr Stenhouse, Mrs Phillips and I have had several students bring us their fantastic work to show us. Students also collectively reached our third Golden Time of the year through each class earning 400 Goldies for displaying our values of Respect, Kindness, Team Work and Challenge Yourself and all enjoyed an extra 15 minutes of play on Tuesday afternoon. Our Year 3-6 students are working extra hard on rehearsals for the upcoming musical at Churchlands Concert Hall in Week 8 and we can’t wait for the performances to arrive. A massive thank you to Mrs Snelson, Mrs O’Dea, Mrs Edmondson and all parents and grandparents who have already put in hours of extra work to help make the musical an amazing experience for our students. We encourage all families, regardless of if your child is in the Musical, to attend the musical on either Thursday 15th June or Friday 16th June at 7pm at Churchlands Concert Hall. It will be bright, colourful and lots of fun.

SCHOOL CANTEEN REOPENING TERM 3

With great thanks and perseverance by our P&C, Newborough Primary School finally has a new School Canteen Manager, Jenny Warner! The canteen will start up again in Term 3 on Thursdays and Fridays with a new menu. I am sure there are many parents reading this who will be thrilled with the thought of not needing to make lunches for the whole 5 days a week.

While the canteen won’t fully open until next term, the canteen will open later in the term on Thursday 22nd June (our Winter Solstice Pyjama Day in Week 9) and Thursday 29th June (Week 10) for lunches only and more information will come out about this soon.

VOLUNTEERS FOR CANTEEN ROSTER NEEDED

To help our canteen run successfully, Jenny will need the support of volunteers on Thursdays and Fridays. Last year we had a small number of regular volunteers but this year, we would love to encourage every parent who uses the canteen to also help support it through your time at least once this year. (Many hands make light work and yummy lunches for your children!)

To volunteer this year, we will require all parents helping in the canteen to complete two small, free online training sessions on food safety that the Department of Education is now requiring all volunteers to do. These sessions are easy and can be done in front of the TV while sipping your favourite drink and watching reruns of Peppa Pig, Frozen or Shrek for the millionth time! We will send out more information on these two training sessions later in the week.

We will also ask for volunteers to assist Jenny in the canteen later in the term to help provide lunch orders to students in Weeks 9 and 10. This is really exciting news for our school and we hope all families will support the canteen by both ordering from there and volunteering your time to help in there. Your kids will love you for it.

WELCOME MRS NATASHA TENCH, OUR NEW PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

It is also exciting news that our new Physical Education teacher, Mrs Natasha Tench starts with us on Tuesday 6th June. Natasha was the Junior School Sports Coordinator and the Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 PE and Health Teacher for Presbyterian Ladies College (PLC). We are all very excited to welcome her to Newborough Primary School and hope you will all join us in welcoming her to our school community. Natasha has even promised to stay at Newborough longer than just a few weeks. Winning!

Welcome, Mrs Tench

WESTERN AUSTRALIA DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY – MONDAY 5TH JUNE 2023

A reminder that this weekend is a long weekend as the state recognises Western Australia Day on Monday 5th June. Please do not come to school on Monday.

As always, thank you to everyone for your continued support this year so far. Please know it is appreciated.

Kind regards
Karen Tucknott
Principal

NOONGAR VOCABULARY PROGRAM

Noongar is the language of the Noongar nation and is spoken by many groups across the south-west corner of Western Australia. Newborough Primary School staff and students are learning Noongar words together in class. Our Term 2 focus is on Body. We have started to learn the following words:

Week 1: Kaat: head
Week 2: Koort: heart
Week 3: Maar: hand
Week 4: Djen: foot
Week 5: Maat: leg
Week 6: Kaboorl: stomach
Week 7: Daa: mouth

NOONGAR SEASON:

Makuru (June-July)

The Noongar Season ‘Makuru' is the season of fertility and is the coldest and wettest season of the year. There are more frequent gales and storms during this time.

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY AND P&C DAY

Thank you to our super P&C who helped organise Walk to School Day on Friday 19th May. We had many students challenge themselves to walk to school, receive a Goldie and win a small prize from a raffle on the day. Force Reality sponsored a coffee van for parents to say thank you to our P&C for P&C Day on the same Friday. It was a really lovely morning under the trees with parents and we thank our P&C very much for all they do for our school.

GIFTED AND TALENTED: Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC)

ASSESSMENT OF YEAR 4 STUDENTS FOR THE PEAC PROGRAM

The PEAC Program provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6. PEAC offers a range of courses that provide identified students with work that is intellectually challenging. All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Program.

Testing at Newborough Primary School will occur in Term 3, Week 3, Monday 31st July. Year 4 Parents will be provided more information closer to the time.

The scores from the test will be used in the selection of students for PEAC courses during 2024 to 2025 and also to inform educational provision in schools.

If you do not wish your child to be included in the PEAC assessment please notify the school in writing by Wednesday, 26th July.

Reconciliation Week

The theme this year is ‘Be a Voice for Generations’. For the work of generations past, and the benefit of generations future, act today for a more just, equitable and reconciled country for all.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) – 27th May to 3rd June – is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

For Newborough Primary School, we will recognise NRW in Week 6. Through their own communication methods, classroom teachers will share with you the activities they are planning on conducting that week.

Faction Cross Country

Newborough Primary School will be holding our Faction Cross Country event this year on Tuesday, 27th June 2023. All parents and guardians are most welcome to attend but we ask you to stay in the zoned parent area. If heavy rain is forecast a date will be decided as soon as possible. The school will notify parents late on the Monday before the day by email if the carnival will be postponed. This year we will be presenting all first place winners from Years 3-6 with a Champion Boy and Girl medallion and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place getters with a ribbon. Year 1 and 2 student winners will receive 1st- 4th place ribbons, but not medallions, as our Year 1 and 2 sports program focus is on the PBW values. The faction cross-country shield will be presented at the NAIDOC Assembly on Friday 30th June. Years 3-6 students will then be chosen for the interschool Cross Country carnival. The date for this year is Friday, 28th July 2023.

Races will start with the Year 6 students at 8.50am. Parents can drop students off at class and then wait on the oval in the marked parent area for students to arrive and race. All cross-country races will be concluded by lunch time at 1.00pm.

Please do not bring your dogs to the school grounds or school oval at any time.

Third Party App Permissions

At school students often may access online third party services to support their learning in the classroom. The aim of accessing these services is to provide our students with significant educational benefits.

As part of our commitment to keeping our students safe online, we are currently reviewing our use of third party online services at school. As part of our commitment to keep students safe online we work with the Department of Education to ensure that services that we use have completed privacy and security risk assessments, identify online third party services which hold student information and as part of this will provide notification to parents or seek consent before using an online third party service.

We ask that you complete the service as soon as possible. If you do not consent to any of the services listed, the school will contact you to discuss your reasons. If you do not consent, your child may receive an alternative education program that does not make use of these services.

Chaplaincy News

Greetings Newborough PS School Community

I have been completing a Certificate in Trauma Informed Practise. In short, it means having practises that ensure safety, choices, teamwork, trust, and empowerment, when working with individuals. The teachings raised the point,

Are we still teaching our young people to run away from uncomfortable feelings?

We have so many resources around mental health and what to do to feel better if we have uncomfortable feelings. This is awesome as it’s physically and mentally dangerous to stay in those feelings for too long. However, it would be beneficial for students to learn ‘WHY’ they are feeling uncomfortable emotions and then act as they do. I am talking about the messages they tell themselves as a result of an experience. For instance, a student thinks another student has looked at them funny and then lashes out. We need to understand why that student reacted to this, what message did they receive?

I was impressed when in the principal’s office as part of a behavioural meeting with students, when she asked the students why they felt a certain way. When the student replies “I always feel like the one who is seen as weird, and when they look at me like that, it makes me feel like I am weird.” Perfect, we can work with that. This comment shows a belief the student has about themselves. They become aware of their thoughts and actions.

If we don’t explore the messages that come about from these uncomfortable feelings, then a large amount of unprocessed pain in the body can be carried around. Children act out against other’s when they perceive these messages are being reinforced.

As a parent it’s important to let your children feel uncomfortable feelings, discover why they are having them and then teach them how to fully process these feelings.

If you would like some resources around this, please let me know.

Blessings
Ms Deb

Music News

SHREK The Musical

It’s all happening in the musical department at the moment. Mums, dads and grannies sewing, cutting, gluing and painting. Mrs Edmondson creating, as always, her magic with the set design, Mrs O’Dea coaching students their vocal parts and me…slowly and quite obviously turning grey by the minute.

Our classroom ensembles are working very hard during music lessons to learn their moves and songs and rehearsing their acting parts. The main cast is almost constantly on the go to meet the deadlines, but we know it’s going to be totally worth it in the end when the stage lights turn on and we get to entertain you.

Just a quick warning, tickets are selling fast, so make sure you log on to trybooking and get your seats before they are all gone!

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERYDAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.

The school and Principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.

If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long-term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre-Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the school directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9278 0450

Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.

Notes are requested from parents for:

  • Any absence from school
  • Permission to go on vacation during term time
  • Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
  • Nonparticipation in sport and physical education lessons

They will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher when they collect the student from the classroom.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank account.

Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.

Money can be paid by online banking (please include your child’s surname and incursion/excursion name as reference). e.g., K Smith Edu-dance.

MOBILE PHONES POLICY

A reminder that the Western Australian Department of Education has a strict ban on students using mobile phones at school. Students who bring any mobile communication device, including phones, to school must hand it in to the classroom teacher or front office where it will be stored until the end of the day. The exception to this is the Years 4-6 students participating in the bring your own devices program, which allows the student to bring laptops to school, but still no mobile phones. Students who may require contacting parents during the school day can do this on the school landline phones with permission of the Admin team if the reason is for an emergency only.
