School Communication Survey

As part of the Newborough Primary School Business Plan 2021-2024, Newborough Primary School is seeking to develop a Communications Strategy to outline the ways in which communications flow within the school, and between the school and its key stakeholders, students, parents, P&C, Board and the broader local community.

In the next few weeks, the School and NPS School Board will be conducting a parent/guardian survey to ask for feedback about the school’s communication channels and effectiveness to help inform us of areas we communicate well in and areas we can improve.

We ask that you look out for the survey and further information in regard to the survey.

Newborough Primary School Annual School Report 2022

Each year, Newborough Primary School is required to produce a School Report to parents, carers and the wider community with information about our school, student performance, progress towards achieving our areas of focus and the targets set in our Business Plan 2021 – 2024. The report also outlines our future actions to be taken in 2023 to improve student achievement and further enhance the school’s effectiveness.

For those interested in reading the NPS Annual School 2022, it is now online both on the Newborough Primary School website under ‘Our School: School Reviews and Annual Reports’ and the Department of Education’s Schools Online.

Walk Safely to School Day – Friday 19th May 2023

In conjunction with the P&C, Newborough Primary School will be encouraging all students to participate in the National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) on Friday 19th May. WSTSD is an annual campaign that encourages all primary school children and their parents and carers to walk safely and regularly to school. This event seeks to promote better health, road safety, public transport and looking after the environment. If students walk to school on Friday 19th May, they will be given a Goldie for ‘Challenging Themselves’ and receive a raffle ticket that will go in a draw for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize, including the chance to win a voucher to JFE uniforms for a new faction t-shirt or a Boost Juice voucher. Students who have walked to school can meet the P&C parents in the quadrangle to receive the Goldie and raffle ticket.

All prizes have been kindly donated by JFE uniforms and the P&C. Thank you.

P&C Day – Friday 19th May

Friday 19th May is also P&C Day. This is a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge our P&C for all they do for our school community. We are so fortunate to have a strong and vibrant P&C who do so much for the school and community. I encourage all parents to come along to the meetings and get involved. Thank you, Newborough P&C. You are really appreciated.

Winter Solstice PJ Day – Thursday 22nd June

Eurovision – Perth Band Voyager to Represent Australia at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool

Possibly not an article that you thought you might read in this newsletter. However, it is with great excitement that we share with permission that one of our Kindy Red student, Flynn’s stepdad, Scott Kay, is in the band Voyager, a progressive heavy metal band from Perth, that is representing Australia in Eurovision in Liverpool this month.

Scott is one of the guitarists in Voyager. He has built a career on his guitar skills & teaches Contemporary guitar at an all-girls school in WA. The band will be performing their song ‘Promise’, an epic progressive pop metal song.

The Eurovision Song Contest will be held 9-13 May and you can tune in on SBS & SBS on Demand.

Voyager will perform live in the Second Semi Final on Thursday 11th May 2023.

Televised times are still to be announced but best way to keep track is through social media.

Facebook: Voyager Australia

We wish Scott, and Voyager, all the very best for their Eurovision quest.

Noongar Season

Djeran (April – May)

The Noongar Season ‘Djeran' is represented by the colour green as it is the time of the year where the cooler weather begins.

Djeran season sees a break in the really hot weather. A key indicator of the change of season is the cool nights that bring a dewy presence in the early mornings.

The winds will also change, especially in their intensity, with light breezes generally swinging from southerly directions. Many flying ants can be seen cruising around in the light winds.

Noongar Vocabulary Program

Noongar is the language of the Noongar nation and is spoken by many groups across the south-west corner of Western Australia. Newborough Primary School staff and students are learning Noongar words together in class. Our Term 2 focus is on Body. We have started to learn the following words:

Week 1: Kaat: head
Week 2: Koort: heart

Year 5 Parent Meeting – 2024 Year 6 Camp

On Monday 8th May at 3:00pm we invite parents of students in Year 5 to attend an information session in Room 14 regarding the 2024 Year 6 Camp. We will be providing information regarding the dates, venue, activities, and associated costs. We realise that there is quite some time before the camp next year; however, we would like to give families as much time as possible to prepare for the costs of camp and give time to arrange fundraising opportunities.

We will also be providing information about the 2024 leavers shirts and the process for ordering one.

Cross Country 2023 Years 1 to Year 6

All students in Year 1 to year 6 should have brought home a Cross Country Excursion and Consent Form for you to complete for your child to participate in this term’s Faction Cross Country event on Tuesday 27th June 2023 (Week 10, Term 2). We require a Permission Note as the cross-country course utilises the adjacent City of Stirling land, along the boundary of the Jackson St and Wilding Street reserve and along Newborough Street at the front of the school for the Year 5 and 6 students. Students need this permission for both practice runs and the actual cross-country which all students are expected to participate in unless a note is provided by parents exempting them from the event on medical grounds.

The focus of the cross country is on participation and earning points for the factions. Each child will receive at least one point for completing the race with the first-place girl and boy runner receiving 10 points for their faction. Please discuss the school’s values of ‘Challenge Yourself, Teamwork, Respect and Kindness’ with your child/children when talking about the cross-country. Not being a placegetter is nothing to be concerned about. Instead, remind your child/children that challenging themselves just to compete for their faction and showing teamwork shows real strength of character.

While the cross-country date may seem a long way away, the Permission Note allows students to practice their cross country running in both Physical Education lessons, class fitness and Friday sports times next term.

Cross-Country Permission Notes

Please complete the form and have your child hand it to their teacher by Friday 5th May. There is no cost attached to cross-country carnival.

Medallions and Interschool Cross Country

At Newborough Primary, we award ribbons to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placegetters in each race in Years 1 and 2 at the end of their cross-country race on the day and medallions to these same place getters in Years 3-6. Years 1 and 2 are only awarded ribbons as the real focus is on participation in the early years.

The Ocean Net network (Deanmore, Scarborough, Doubleview, Yuluma) normally holds an Interschool Cross Country event for the first 5 placegetters of each year level boys and girls in Years 3-6. At this stage, the date for the Interschool Cross-Country event is early in Term 3.

NEWBRO DADS

Term 2 is busy!! Even a calendar app on your phone resembles some epic novel with a new volume out each week. There is certainly little time to sleep. So why not a late night for the kids full of excitement, dark shadows, critters and blinding torch lights in the darkness. Why would we do it to ourselves, I hear you say!! Well it’s a whole heap of fun. We will lead the way and you parents can follow along keeping far enough away to let the kids jump in all the puddles

When is all this fun going to happen? Well, the inaugural NewBros Night Walk around Gwelup Lake will take place on Saturday 13th May at 6:00pm.

It will be a guided walk around Gwelup Lake where we will find loads of interesting animals in their natural surroundings and see what crazy things they get up to when it gets dark- hiding from the kids I expect… crazy stuff!!

We will meet at the Lake Gwelup Reserve Playground (Huntriss Road) where we will have a Gazebo and lighting setup right next door to the playground to check in at 6pm.

We will aim to leave in groups at 6:30pm for the estimated 1 hour walk around the lake with MARSHMALLOWS for all the kids that complete the walk.

This is an All Weather event, a bit of rain is really fun for the kids and the animals.

The equipment required for the walk:

  1. A small torch, small light or a head torch.
  2. Appropriate clothing to suit conditions. If wet weather is predicted bring raincoats & jackets as well as a change of clothes for your children. Best to bring some waterproof boots/shoes or at least an old pair of shoes that can be washed after the event. Dress appropriately for the hour and so you can remain with your child throughout the walk.
  3. A Sense of Adventure

NO BIKES, TRIKES, SCOOTERS, TOYS PLEASE

COST: The best bit is that this is a FREE EVENT! Just login and get your tickets.

Tickets can be obtained here:

https://www.trybooking.com/CHVYY

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS: ALL CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A SUPERVISING ADULT AND THERE IS A REQUIREMENT TO SIGN IN ALL PARTICIPATING CHILDREN.

School Garden

Our budding gardeners planted some veggies in the garden last term. There have been tomatoes, capsicum, parsley going strong in the garden beds. Big shout out to our awesome school cleaner and handyman Moneer. He has been watering the veggies throughout the week as needed.

Remember you can help out each Wednesday from 3pm. Meet me at the Sustainability shed to grab some tools. It’s only 30mins of simple work maintaining the garden whilst the kids have quick play on the Nature Playground.

Newbros Catch Up

Our next catch-up is next week at the Scarborough Sports Club. Wednesday 10th May from 6pm.

Come down for a chat about the night walk, camp out, other planned events, men’s stuff, geopolitical stability…whatever.

The bar and restaurant will be open so you can order a meal as well.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERYDAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.

The school and Principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.

If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long-term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre-Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the school directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9278 0450

Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.

Notes are requested from parents for:

  • Any absence from school
  • Permission to go on vacation during term time
  • Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
  • Nonparticipation in sport and physical education lessons

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MOBILE PHONES POLICY

A reminder that the Western Australian Department of Education has a strict ban on students using mobile phones at school. Students who bring any mobile communication device, including phones, to school must hand it in to the classroom teacher or front office where it will be stored until the end of the day. The exception to this is the Years 4-6 students participating in the bring your own devices program, which allows the student to bring laptops to school, but still no mobile phones. Students who may require contacting parents during the school day can do this on the school landline phones with permission of the Admin team if the reason is for an emergency only.
