Principal’s Introduction

KAYA. HELLO

Week 8! What a busy term we have had so far. Here are some key messages for this fortnight’s newsletter.

Classrooms and Learning

This is our core business. I am so impressed at how every classroom is focussed on learning. Our staff are an amazing group of educators who really work hard for the students in their care. Parents, your support is greatly appreciated. I encourage you to visit classrooms before school, see your child’s work, and make an appointment if you wish to find out more about your child’s progress and achievement.

Student Illness

Over the past few weeks, we have seen an increase in Covid, school sores, vomiting and shingles.

Please ensure you keep your child at home if they are showing any signs of illness including headaches and cold and flu symptoms. Sending sick children to school puts other students and staff at risk of also becoming sick. Teachers will send any sick students to the Front Office and we will then call parents to pick up your sick child from school. Please ensure you are available or have other nominated family members available to collect your sick child from school.

Newborough Primary School will also be receiving a large quantity of nasal RAT tests from the Government in the coming week which will be distributed to each child for winter. Please keep an eye out for these.

NATURE PLAYGROUND

After two years, the nature playground should be completed this week and we are all very excited and grateful to have such a wonderful community space to be able to play in. While the building of the actual play equipment is finished, the P&C will be organising for the final mulching and compacted crushed limestone path to be laid at some time in the near future. This week, all classes will have time to explore and play in the nature playground during class time. However, we will not be allowing students to play in there during recess and lunch times until we have inducted students on the new play equipment and established guidelines with them for safe play. The nature playground will be open for after school play once the fences have been taken down. As with play within the school boundary, we do ask that parents keep a close eye on their children please.

We will be celebrating the opening of the nature playground on Friday 24th March at 1.50pm in the amphitheatre near the nature playground with a small assembly. We are very fortunate to Herbert Bropho conduct the Welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony at the assembly. We also welcome our School Patron, Gina Williams, School Principal, Mr Worthy, our local Member for Scarborough, Stuart Aubrey and P&C President, Laurie McCallum to the celebrations. The P&C have also organised an after school play date for all families on the same day to commemorate the opening as well and have organised Perth Reptile Company to come to the opening from 3-5pm. Thanks so much to our P&C for organising this. We are incredibly lucky to have an amazing school community that has committed funds to this project.

A reminder that the super Newbro Fathers have organised a sausage sizzle also for this Friday 24th March. Orders can be placed online through Quickcliq. Thanks, Newbros. I am sure parents will appreciate not making lunches on Friday! Nom. Nom. Nom. Nom.

Music Room Gate to Remain Open for the Rest of Term One

At this stage, we are going to trial keeping the Music Room gate open, rather than reopen the nature playground gate, as we have found that this has alleviated some service road safety and parent parking issues. We will review this at the end of the term.

Dogs On School Oval and In Nature Playground

We have noticed an increased number of dogs being walked on our school oval during the school day which causes disruptions to our recess and lunch play and sports lessons, as well as an increase in doggie poo on the oval. Very few of the people playing and walking their dogs are school parents but we do ask you to be mindful of this to support the school if you do see people on our school grounds with dogs.

With the nature playground reopening, we ask that no dogs are allowed in the playground please when you are walking your child to and from school. Please tie your dogs up away from the nature playground please. Thank you.

Farewell

We say thank you and farewell to Mr Gulshan Price on Friday 24th March. We have loved having Mr Price as our Physical Education Specialist for the last 8 weeks and wish him all the very best at Marangaroo Primary School as Deputy Principal. He will be an asset to their administration team. In Weeks 9 and 10 this term, we have Mr Scoulidis and Mrs Neser taking the PE classes. We will announce our new Physical Education teacher in the coming weeks. The new teacher will commence at the beginning of Term 2.

NAPLAN

Thank you to Mr Stenhouse, Mr Blanch, Miss Kos, Mrs Hughes, Miss Watson and Miss Lydon for their preparation of students and for conducting the NAPLAN Assessments with the Year 3 and Year 5 over the past two weeks. We look forward to receiving the results later in the year.

Karen Tucknott
Principal – Semester One

Noongar Season

We are still currently in the Bunuru Season. Bunuru is the hottest part of the year with little to no rainfall.

Noongar Vocabulary Program

Noongar is the language of the Noongar nation and is spoken by many groups across the south-west corner of Western Australia. Newborough Primary School staff and students are learning Noongar words together in class. Our Term 1 focus is on greetings and family. We have started to learn the following words:

Week 6: Ngaangk: Mother
Week 6: Maambart: Father
Week 7: Djook: Sister
Week 7: Ngooni: Brother
Week 8: Koorda: Friend
Week 9: Woola: shout of praise

This is available to pre-primary through to year 6 kids and only via ‘Quickcliq.com.au’. Orders will open soon and close on the morning of 24th March. All funds raised will go to the P&C to do cool stuff, like build Nature Play Grounds!!! Which will also be opening on this day!! This is proudly brought to you by the Newbro Dads who are part of your school P&C. Please come along and meet other parents at our next P&C meeting on Wednesday 22nd March, 7pm in the school library.

But wait there’s more…

The Newbro Dads will be partnering with the schools Sustainability Program to help out in the school garden. Kids who are part of the Garden Club will be doing cool stuff in the garden each week, learning about soil, plants and growing food. The Newbro Dads are going to help out each Wednesday after school with the general up keep of the garden. Keen parents can come down on any Wednesday at 2:55pm for 30mins of gardening. All the equipment is available so bring your hat and some enthusiasm and enjoy a chit chat whilst the kids play on the Nature Playground (after the 24th March).

Who are the Newbro Dads? We are NPS Dads who catch up, chat about anything (even Netball) and come up with a few ideas to do stuff with our kids and share it with the whole school community.

Our next catch up is 28th March, 6:30pm at Scarborough Sports & Community Club. Come and have a beer, meal or a lemonade.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERYDAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.

The school and Principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.

If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long-term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre-Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the school directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9278 0450

Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.

Notes are requested from parents for:

  • Any absence from school
  • Permission to go on vacation during term time
  • Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
  • Nonparticipation in sport and physical education lessons

They will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher when they collect the student from the classroom.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank account.

MOBILE PHONES POLICY

A reminder that the Western Australian Department of Education has a strict ban on students using mobile phones at school. Students who bring any mobile communication device, including phones, to school must hand it in to the classroom teacher or front office where it will be stored until the end of the day. The exception to this is the Years 4-6 students participating in the bring your own devices program, which allows the student to bring laptops to school, but still no mobile phones. Students who may require contacting parents during the school day can do this on the school landline phones with permission of the Admin team if the reason is for an emergency only.
