Principal’s Introduction

KAYA. HELLO

What a terrific fortnight we have had. Students are now really settled and back into the routines of school and all our students should be congratulated on their behaviour over the last two weeks. It has been very pleasing to see students challenge themselves with their learning, including the presentation of their work through our Work Standards and setting challenging goals in different learning areas. I loved walking through a Year 3 Japanese class last week where students were setting their individual goals for the year such as being able to extend the number of colours or phrases they could say in Japanese by the end of the year.

Our Pre-Primary classes have commenced On Entry assessments this week, which will continue over the next few weeks. Results from these assessments will be reported to Our Pre-primary classes commenced On Entry assessments last week and results from these assessments will be reported to parents over the next few weeks. These assessments assess Pre-primary students’ skills and understandings of oral language, reading, writing and numeracy as they enter their first year of compulsory schooling. The information provided enables us to plan for the learning needs of each child including those who may need differentiation for their learning.

NAPLAN Assessments for our Year 3 and Year 5 students commence in Week 7. Mr Stenhouse has written more information about these assessments in the Deputy News.

Just a reminder about bikes and helmets. Australia was the first country in the world to introduce uniform national all-age mandatory helmet legislation in 1990 with the Western Australian police commencing enforcement in 1992. We do have a number of students riding bikes to school and it is important they have a helmet to protect them in case of any accidents, or if police do enforce the law if students (and parents) are seen without one. A reminder also that all bikes, scooters, e-rideables, skateboards etc must be pushed through the school by all students and parents please.

NATURE PLAYGROUND

Our nature playground is coming along beautifully and looks like it will be great fun! Please enjoy the photos of the progress of the nature playground.

Our first Student Leader assembly was last Friday 17th February. Please enjoy our Welcome Back video we showed at the assembly.

Noongar Season

We are currently in the Bunuru Season. Bunuru is the hottest part of the year with little to no rainfall.

People would stay close to the coast and to reliable water sources due to the drying up of water bodies inland. Fish were trapped and speared. They made up a large part of the diet and fish bones were a good source of calcium. Many reptiles including Kurda (goannas) lay their eggs at this time and the Kabart (dugite snake) may be active during long hot days.

NOONGAR VOCABULARY PROGRAM

Noongar is the language of the Noongar nation and is spoken by many groups across the south-west corner of Western Australia. Newborough Primary School staff and students are learning Noongar words together in class. Our Term 1 focus is on greetings and family. We have started to learn the following words:

Week 1: kaya: hello/yes
Week 1: Wandjoo: welcome
Week 2: yoowart: no/nothing
Week 3: Aliwa: look out
Week 4: Boordawan: talk to you later
Week 5: Moort: family
Week 6: Ngaangk: Mother

BRICKS 4 KIDS INCURSION

This term, Newborough Primary School has organised for a Bricks 4 Kids incursion to run over 4 weeks starting Thursday 9th March. Bricks 4 Kids will provide students with opportunities to build unique Lego creations, developing students digital technologies, engineering and problem solving skills, develop creativity and understanding of how things work in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere. This links to Digital Technologies, Critical and Creative Thinking and Problem Solving. Notes will go home this week with the payment of $23 per student to be made by Friday 10th March 2023. More information go come home this week.

NAPLAN 2023

Hi parents and guardians of Year 3 and 5 students,

As you are aware all year 3,5,7 and 9 students will sit NAPLAN Online in March this year. (15th – 27th March)

A flyer will be sent home with your child containing information for parents and guardians about NAPLAN. We are aware that the Year 3 students have not participated in NAPLAN Online before and there may be parents of both Year 3 and 5 students who would like to know more information about NAPLAN.

To help you find out more about NAPLAN Online, we are holding a Parent Information session in Week 5, Monday, 27th February from 2.00pm – 3.00pm in the library. Below is a link to a short survey to let me know if there are enough parents/guardians who will participate in the session.

Please click on the link below to register your interest in attending the Parent Information Session:

https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=-RaA4P3Ru0yDsLdutDYWJyOizMh7gjlDjFxU7-GIHq1UM1RQRFFHRFE1NFRHRVFBVVIyNEFESVlUVCQlQCN0PWcu

Device Use

In previous years we have encouraged the use of BYOD devices for NAPLAN but we are finding this problematic as there are times they are either not charged or are not holding charge, have issues with logging into NAPLAN Online or devices have been forgotten. This year are going to use school-based devices to mitigate any potential issues.

Headphones

All NAPLAN tests require students to use headphones. Whilst the school does have a bank of spare headphones for students to use, we would prefer students to own their own headphones to limit the use of sharing equipment at this time, helping us to continue promoting good hygiene practices.

We will be checking all Year 3 and 5 students to see who does and does not have headphones. If your child does not own their own headphones, we strongly encourage you to purchase them a pair ASAP as they will also need them during the testing period and for any practise tests run in class prior to the. The school has previously recommended the Micador MiConnect Multimedia with Volume Control Lime, which were on the booklist; however, this years booklist headphones will work as well. You can purchase these headphones from Campion in Malaga or provide any good, over the head headphones with a jack connection (not a USB connection please). Earbuds are not promoted by Newborough Primary School and students will not be permitted to use them.

Later this term, I will send out the NAPLAN timetable to you so you know when your child will be sitting which test and when.

Please do not hesitate to contact me in regard to any of the information above.

Regards
Nick Stenhouse

Chaplain News

Hello Newborough PS Community

Our fourth week of school already and I must say the year has started great. One area that pops up in the playground is challenging friendship issues. So below are a few tips on how to assist your student to navigate the challenges.

Don’t

Do

Don’t try to fix the problem

Do listen without judgment. Ask what happened and what they think the problem is.

Don’t force your child to stay with or change friends.

Do ask open-ended questions to learn more about the situation. How did you feel? What bothered you the most?

Don’t assume your child is always the victim. “You poor thing”

Do show empathy. “That must have been hard to deal with”

Don’t minimise hurtful comments

‘I am sure it will be fine”

Do ask what kind of help they need from you.

‘How can I support you right now”

Don’t talk bad about the friend.

Do brainstorm together. “What are some options that you would be comfortable trying to deal with this?

I hope this will be a helpful resource.

If you would like to discuss any friendship issues your student is having, don’t hesitate to call me.

Blessings
Ms Deb

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERYDAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.

The school and Principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.

If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long-term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre-Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the school directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9278 0450

Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.

Notes are requested from parents for:

  • Any absence from school
  • Permission to go on vacation during term time
  • Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
  • Nonparticipation in sport and physical education lessons

They will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher when they collect the student from the classroom.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank account.

Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.

Money can be paid by online banking (please include your child’s surname and incursion/excursion name as reference). e.g., K Smith Edu-dance.

Our school bank details are:
BSB: 016 350
Account No: 3408 71304

MOBILE PHONES POLICY

A reminder that the Western Australian Department of Education has a strict ban on students using mobile phones at school. Students who bring any mobile communication device, including phones, to school must hand it in to the classroom teacher or front office where it will be stored until the end of the day. The exception to this is the Years 4-6 students participating in the bring your own devices program, which allows the student to bring laptops to school, but still no mobile phones. Students who may require contacting parents during the school day can do this on the school landline phones with permission of the Admin team if the reason is for an emergency only.
