Principal’s Introduction

We are currently in the Bunuru Season: the second summer in February and March. This is the season of adolescence and the hottest part of the year.

WELCOME - WANDJOO

Welcome to all our new students, families and those returning back to our lovely school. It was super to see our students and families back keen and excited to challenge themselves for the year ahead.

Thank you to all parents, students and staff for your support over the past two weeks as I have embarked on filling Mr Worthy’s shoes in the Principal role for Semester One while he is enjoying his Long Service Leave. The strength of the Newborough Primary Staff is in our dedication to providing a safe, secure and engaging environment to help each student reach their full potential. Parents also play an essential part in their children’s development, learning and wellbeing and students generally do better when there are strong family-school relationships and connections. We encourage you as parents to continue to be part of your child’s education this year. Ensure you make time to have conversations with your child’s class teacher, show an interest in your child’s work and please do not hesitate to contact Mr Nick Stenhouse, Mrs Elisa Phillips or myself if you have any queries.

Our staff’s focus this year is to continue to strengthen our own pedagogical and curriculum knowledge and practices. At our staff School Development Days last week, we received professional learning on strengthening our teaching in reading fluency, Positive Behaviour and Wellbeing and strategies for Response to Intervention and high potential students.

We welcome new and returning staff back this year and we have had very few changes to our permanent staff. Wandjoo to the following staff:

  • Mrs Georgia Bayne: Year 2 Room 8 Wednesday-Fridays
  • Miss Laura Hicks: Year 4 Room 12 Wednesday-Fridays replacing Mr Iain Freeman who will be taking leave from Week 4 this term until the end of Semester One.
  • Mr Gulshan Price: our new permanent Physical Education Teacher
  • Miss Rebeka Jepson: Year 6 Room 16 Semester One. Rebeka is backfilling for Mrs Elisa Phillips while Elisa is in the Deputy Principal role.
  • Mrs Michelle Kaps: Education Assistant Term One backfilling for Mrs Louise Carey while Louise is on Leave
  • Mrs Kara Varcoe: Kindy Green Term One while Mrs Pip Murdoch is on leave
  • Mrs Rita Tuohey: Special Needs Education Assistant Wednesdays
  • Miss Elle Walker: School Psychologist Tuesdays
  • Mrs Dominika Mackenzie: School Officer Mondays and Fridays
  • Mrs Lori Beatty is teaching at Tjuntjuntara Remote Community School for the year which should prove to be a very interesting experience. We also welcome back Mrs Mandy Farmer into Year 4, Room 13 for the year after leave in 2022.

Thank you to all parents for your preparation of students in school uniform and booklist items. The P&C have once again been fantastic coordinating and organising the Booklists for our school. Thank you so much to Jackie Stott and the Booklist team who packed and distributed all the booklists. Amazing job! We have been incredibly lucky to have had Jackie coordinate the Booklists for the past few years and this was the last year she will be doing this role. We welcome Sandra Leach as the new Booklist Coordinator for next year and wish her all the best for the role.

MOBILE PHONES

A reminder that the Western Australian Department of Education has a strict ban on students using mobile phones at school. Students who bring any mobile communication device, including phones, to school must hand it in to the classroom teacher or front office where it will be stored until the end of the day. The exception to this is the Years 4-6 students participating in the bring your own devices program, which allows the student to bring laptops to school, but still no mobile phones. Students who may require contacting parents during the school day can do this on the school landline phones with permission of the Admin team if the reason is for an emergency only.

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE AT SCHOOL

Main gates open at 8:20am. Mr Stenhouse, Mrs Phillips and myself will be out and about before school each morning to greet and assist you in any way possible.

Earlier access for school based activities such as Choir, Music Tuition, Running Club is through the Mulberry Tree gate.

  • K-6 Classrooms open at 8:30am
  • Parents/Carers welcome to walk children to their classes, enter classrooms and meet with teachers for short communications. Please make an appointment if you require extended time.
  • No before school play in any areas, including Kindy and Pre-primary. Students are to be fully supervised by parents in these areas.
  • First siren at 8:37am
  • Second siren classes commence at 8:40am
  • Gates closed and locked at 8:40am
  • Students arriving from 8:40am are late and go to the Front Office for a ‘Late Pass’
  • Front Office is not for general entry into the school. Students entering must be with a parent

After School

  • Gates open at 2:50pm (2:20pm on Tuesday)
  • Gates locked and toilets closed at 3:30pm (3:00pm on Tuesday)
  • After school play is a privilege, not a right. We are happy to support after school play on school grounds with the following conditions:
  • Parents must supervise play and keep students in line of sight.
  • School rules apply at all times.
  • There is no play on verandahs, Library and near Front Office or car parks.
  • Play allowed on school playgrounds Mondays, Wednesday, Thursday, Fridays until gates are locked.
  • There is NO afterschool play on a Tuesday. This is a dedicated teacher preparation and staff meeting time. Families are asked to leave school grounds straight away on a Tuesday please.
  • Mulberry Tree gates remain open for after school care
  • Continued supervised play encouraged at the City of Stirling’s Karrinyup Sports Centre and Jackson/Wilding reserves and the Nature playground.

ATTENDANCE

Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERY DAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.

The school and Principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.

If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.

NATURE PLAYGROUND REFURBISHMENT

It is with great excitement that the building works for the nature playground commenced on Monday 6th February! Again, thank you to the P&C and our MLA for Scarborough, Stuart Aubrey for their generous funding. During the rebuild, all families on the Wilding Street side of the school area will go through the Music Room gate to ensure safety of students and families. I am led to believe the revamp of the nature playground will take 3-4 weeks. This is very exciting and a long time coming.

SWIMMING CARNIVALS

Unfortunately, our school and Interschool swimming carnivals will not go ahead this year. This is the result of inducting a new PE teacher into the school this year, NAPLAN assessments now being conducted in Weeks 8 and 9 of the term, and no longer being affiliated with the Glengarry group of schools for swimming. We do plan to revisit this for 2023 after having a stable PE teacher for the year!

SCHOOL LIBRARY – OPEN WEDNESDAYS, THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS

Starting from this week, our school library will be open for students to use at lunch times from 1.15pm when Mrs Kirton is on site. These days are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs Edmondson will also be in the library on Wednesday lunch times to assist students and engage them with some activities. Students can use the library to do homework, colour in, play games or read quietly.

Parents are welcome to drop into the library on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings also if they wish to talk to Mrs Kirton in regard to book borrowing.

2023 ASSEMBLY SCHEDULES

This year all class assembly items will be based on developing reading fluency with our students. Fluency is important because it builds a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Reading fluency is made up of accurate reading of an appropriate text at a conversational rate with appropriate prosody or expression. Non-fluent readers usually make many mistakes, read slowly, or they don't read with appropriate expression and phrasing.

Classroom assembly items will be in the form of either a poem, Readers Theatre, song, chant or choral reading.

NOONGAR VOCABULARY PROGRAM

Noongar is the language of the Noongar nation and is spoken by many groups across the south-west corner of Western Australia. To promote the connection, recognition and understanding of our Noongar students, we have incorporated some Noongar vocabulary into our classrooms through a whole school Noongar Vocabulary Program. The program is based on an amazing resource by Jayden Boundary and Tyrone Walgana. Written in Noongar and English, Noongar Boodja Waangkan is a book of Noongar first words including words on family, plants, animals, emotions, colours, numbers and more with pronunciations.

Our Term 1 focus is on greetings and family. We have started to teach students the following words:

Week 1: kaya: hello/yes
Week 1: Wandjoo: welcome
Week 2: yoowart: no/nothing
Week 3: Aliwa: look out
Week 4: Boordawan: talk to you later

In each newsletter, we will share with you our next lots of words. We hope you may be able to learn them along with your child.

BRICKS 4 KIDZ INCURSION

This term, Newborough Primary School has organised for a Bricks 4 Kidz incursion to run over 4 weeks starting Thursday 9th March. Bricks 4 Kidz will provide students with opportunities to build unique Lego creations, developing student’s digital technologies, engineering and problem solving skills, develop creativity and understanding of how things work in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere. This links to Digital Technologies, Critical and Creative Thinking and Problem Solving. Notes will go home this week with the payment of $23 per student to be made by Friday 10th March 2023. More information went home this week.

INCIDENT MANAGEMENT EVACUATION WHOLE SCHOOL PRACTICE – TUESDAY 14TH FEBRUARY 2023 1.45PM

As part of our Incident Management Plan, we will be conducting a practise evacuation procedure on Tuesday 14th February at 1.45pm. This will involve all students and staff from Kindy Red to Year 6 who are on site that day. This means you may hear 3 loud sirens in a row at this time, followed by the ringing of a bell. All staff and students AND PARENTS who are on site MUST participate in the evacuation practice and will be expected to evacuate to the oval with the rest of the school.

Please consider if you need to pick up students at this time as you will NOT be allowed to sign them out during this practice and the front door of the school and gates will be locked as part of the procedure, therefore we ask you consider an alternate time for early pick-ups on Tuesday 14th February. If students come home on Tuesday and say they had to evacuate to the school oval, please know this is part of a practice and not the real deal. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

I wish you a very successful 2023 school year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre-Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

SIGNING OUT EARLY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (e.g. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time - at least 24 hours beforehand, where possible. Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. Parents/Carers sign the child out on the iPad at the front office. They will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher when they collect the student from the classroom.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank account.

For those of you who are new to the school or haven’t seen me, my name is Ms Deb. I have two teenagers, love the bush and writing is a passion of mine. I have been at Newborough now for one and a half years. I love working with your children, assisting them to be the best they can be. Hope you’ve all had a great break and ready to hand your children back to us.

I am so excited to be with your community again this year, to support teachers, students, and families. Below is a reminder of what my role entails.

Scholastic Bookclub

The first edition of the new Scholastic bookclub flyer will come home with children this week. This is the first of 4 catalogues available throughout the year, 1 per term. The scheme is an excellent way to order books for your family, whilst also giving back to the school. 20% of every order goes to the school as part of a reward scheme. The school library received almost $2000 worth of books from these rewards last year!

All orders can be placed online via the Scholastic loop website or app. Orders are online only. If the books are a gift for your child, you can tick the GIFT option. I will keep this out of the main class delivery and arrange for you to collect separately.

Orders are delivered to the school, where I then organise and deliver to each class for them to be issued to the children. The boxes of books often arrive sporadically, so all children may not receive their books on the same day. Please be patient…I’ll aim to have them all delivered within a few days of each other, or let you know if any delays. Don’t hesitate to let me know if any problems.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or worries: laurahaston1@gmail.com

The closing date for the first catalogue is FRIDAY, 17th FEBRUARY.

Thank you for all your help and support with the scheme

Newbro Dads Group 2023

A big welcome to the Newborough Primary School community for 2023 from the Newbro Dads Group. If you’re a new parent to the school, welcome and have a think about spending some time with the Newbro Dads this year. We are part of the school P&C so come along to the first meeting on Monday evening next week and find out more.

The Newbro Dads is a social group for Newborough PS dads & father figures who encourage engagement with our kids and come together to share the fun.

Through social connection we are creating experiences to improve our relationships with our kids so they can thrive.

Our social activities are kept simple to include everyone. Come down on a Friday for an early swim at the beach or just pop in for the post swim coffee.

Join us at a local watering hole for an arvo meal and drink, join the banter, listen to others, share your ideas and get involved if you want.

We organise a few small events for us and the kids each year and top it off with the Newbros Big School Camp Out. The Camp Out is so much fun and your kids will take home memories for life.

As with any community group you can put in as little or as much time as you like. Race in after work, chip in with your special skill or jump in with both feet and help coordinate the activities.

To get things done we have a small group of Dads to steer the ship and the more hands helping out the better.

Our next activity is the Friday morning swim at Trigg Beach. Meet at the beach access in front of Canteen by 6:15am, have a swim then catch up at Canteen after for a chat/ coffee/ hot choc if you like.

To be connected with the Newbro Dads please email us at: Newbrodadsgroup@gmail.com
