Principal’s Introduction

Athletics Carnival

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many chests pinned with ribbons in my career! Every ribbon told the story of a student actively engaged in an event. What an incredible two days of athletics we had last week beginning with the Jumps, Throws and Longer distance events on the Tuesday and concluding on Friday with the tabloid style sprints, relays and team games! The weather was very kind to us on both days as students (some parents and staff) excitedly dressed in Faction colours and had hair coloured before school courtesy of the fabulous P&C helpers. Staff, very capably led by Mrs Henrick and Miss Tucknott, did a great job setting up all the shade shelters, cleaning up the doggy doo’s and sticks and placing equipment for the various events. The oval looked very spectacular and inviting for the great day ahead.

That was the feeling and atmosphere as students marched up to the oval chanting about their factions. Ready to greet and get things going were a host of helpers including our announcers Lanna and later Jacqui and astute, super judges Natalie, Rachelle, Ashley, Jacqui, Sonia, Sandra, Karly and Lisa. What a team! The children all tried their best and produced some very exciting contests and work for the judges. Thank goodness for slow motion replays on the iPad. After one race we had a tie for first and a tie for second. The sportsmanship after each race exemplified the school’s values of Teamwork, Challenge Yourself, Respect and Care. How nice it was to see and hear children get excited about how others went in their race!

It was lovely to see so many parents and family members come along and cheer and support the children. Many thanks to the Kindy staff and parents who ran the very successful Kindy Café. Sneaking in during the day were non-rostered staff members Ms Williams, Mrs Farmer and Mrs O’Dea. Between the three of them they would have collectively attended over 50 carnivals. Many of these, run by Ms Williams.

We received a lot of very positive feedback about the engagement of students in so many events and yet still offering a really competitive format for the elite athletes. Gone are the days with students penned in a bay, teachers going nuts managing behaviour and children complaining they didn’t have enough to do. In fact, by the end of the day there was a happy weariness as the age winners ran the Grand Relay, parents, staff and students ran off in a relay and presentations were made to the Champions, Runners up and of course the winning Faction, Corbett. It was close!

Again, a huge thank to everyone who helped in any way with preparation, set up, on the day and packing up (Done in world record time – many hands make light work).

Best wishes to our School Athletics team for the interschool carnival to be held at Yuluma next Wednesday 14th and Monday 19th September. Go Newborough!!

New COVID-19 Directions

From Friday 9 September, public health measures will ease. The isolation period for COVID-19 positive cases and close contacts will reduce from 7 days to 5 days, provided they are free of symptoms at the time they leave isolation. Mask requirements for public and passenger transport have also changed.

People who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for a minimum of 5 days and can leave isolation if they no longer have symptoms. People who are still symptomatic must remain in isolation until symptoms clear.

Close contacts with no symptoms can continue to attend school and do not have to isolate for the 5 days if they:

  • undertake a daily Rapid Antigen Test (RAT)
  • wear a mask outside the home (Year 7 and above).

Testing for COVID-19 for students who are symptomatic or as a close contact, remains an effective way to limit the spread of COVID-19 in our schools. If you need additional RATs, please contact the front office.

Please let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19 or is a close contact.

Masks will no longer be required to be worn on public or passenger transport. Masks are an important measure to reduce transmission and are still encouraged to be worn in crowded indoor settings when people are unable to physically distance. Students and staff can choose to wear a mask at school, at any time.

Please contact Newborough.Ps@education.wa.edu.au or phone 9278 0450 if you have any queries about COVID-19 safe measures in our school. Thank you for your continued support of the school community in keeping our school COVID-19 safe.

DEPUTY NEWS

Attendance

This year has been quite disruptive for students, with the effects of Covid-19 being evidenced in our attendance figures. After reviewing the data from Semester 1 we have broken a long term (Pre Covid) trend of regular attendance. Our regular attendance for Semester 1 was 51%, it is usually between 92 and 94%. The biggest reason for non-attendance was due to illness. We thank you for keeping your children home when they are unwell and continue to encourage students to stay home if they are unwell. If you are having trouble getting your child to school or would like any further information about school absences, please email:

Parent/Carers Pick Up and Drop Off Changes

Now that COVID restrictions have lifted we are changing the process to allow Parents/Carers to drop off library bags, hats, lunchboxes etc. to classrooms/students/bags. Parents/Carers sign in at the front office on Passtab (will be given a Visitor sticker to wear), drop the item off to their child’s class, and then sign out from Passtab at the front office.

Parents/Carers continue to advise teachers and the front office via email for pick up for appointments etc. so children can be made ready and on time. Parents/Carers sign the child out at the front office, will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card (to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher so they know the student has been signed out), and then go to the classroom to pick up their child.

The new process will commence at the start of term three. This process will reduce the need for staff to bring children to the office for collection. It will also reduce the number of children waiting in the office corridor.

Science Week 2022 Retrospective – Glass, more than meets the eye :-)

Science Week 2022 was an incredible success and there are many people that I need to acknowledge and thank.

Firstly, parents, thank you so much for your overwhelming support of Science Week. It was astonishing to see the amount of effort that was put into acquiring or making all of the incredible costumes that the children wore on our Science Week Dress-Up Days. I cannot say thank you enough :-)

It was also amazing to see so many parents participate in the Open Lab sessions – 114 visits to be exact! A simply staggering turnout! It was really wonderful to have so many of you in to join your children in learning about and making kaleidoscopes and 3D glasses :-) Thank you for giving me the opportunity to showcase Newborough’s wonderful Science program, our explicit teaching strategies, and school values, up close and personal :-)

I want to thank your amazing children [our students] again, for their enthusiasm and participation in this wonderful whole school event. It was incredibly heart-warming, as I moved from room to room on Science Dress-Up Day, to see so many students in creative and interesting costumes. Their response to the learning activities was terrific, and much fun was had by all :-)

Finally, Science Week would not have been the success it was, without our incredible Newborough Staff who got one hundred percent behind it: promoting the event, getting dressed up themselves, and helping to get the kids jazzed about it too. Thank you all so much. You are an outstanding bunch of people to work with :-)

We have a very special community at Newborough Primary School, and Science Week demonstrated so clearly how much we all contribute to make our kids’ time at school the best and most fun it can be :-)

Thank you all again for being so fabulous :-)

Yours in Science,
Mrs Metcalf :-)

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the School directly either by:

SIGNING OUT EARLY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (e.g. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time - at least 24 hours beforehand, where possible. Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank. Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.

Money can be paid by online banking (please include your child’s surname and incursion/excursion name as reference). eg K Smith Edu-dance. Our school bank details are:

Booklists 2023 and Beyond

As many of you may know, Newborough Primary School organises students’ booklist/stationery requirements through the Newborough P&C. This is a major fundraiser for the P&C, providing valuable resources to the school.

This will be my last year managing the Booklist process and I am looking for someone to succeed me, shadowing me this year and taking over the following year.

Processing of orders occurs towards the end of Term 4, with packing and distribution occurring in the two weeks before school starts. If you have that time available and are interested, let me know.

All training will be provided!

Uniform Shop News

The Uniform Shop is having an online sale!!!!!!

The school and P&C are looking at options to outsource the uniform shop to an external uniform supplier. We will still run a second hand shop at school.

Currently we are greatly over stocked in some items/colours/styles, and are having an online sale to reduce our stock levels.

See if you can grab a bargain in your child's size. These items will say "SALE ITEM" and are limited.

  • Due to supplier issues during covid some faction shirts are in a slightly different shade these are the ones on sale. All are still school uniform however at a much reduced price!
  • We have some of the very popular microfibre shorts and the A-Line sports skorts on sale due to carrying too much stock but it's first in as numbers are limited! Maybe think ahead to next year too.
  • If your child feels the cold there are a limited number of size 4 long sleeve gold polo shirts (can be worn for PP and year 1). Also available are some long sleeve size 6 kindy shirts.
  • Due to excess stock in some sizes you might score a discounted microfibre jacket, or trackie pants, great for cooler Spring temperatures (please note that not all sizes will be reduced in this item). Think ahead to next winter and stock up.
  • There are also some plain green skorts (similar design to the tartan skort) available on sale.

All available to order via Quickcliq.

Any questions email: newboroughuniforms@gmail.com
