Principal’s Introduction

Tree Planting Day Friday 19th August (Kindy Red on Thursday)

It was a huge day on Friday as the school planted 60 Banksias around the edge of the Nature Playground. This project has been funded by a grant for $8,000 by the Federal Government’s Queens Jubilee Tree Planting Program. Each of our 15 classes planted four trees, two Banksia Attenuatta (Candlestick) and two Menziesii (Firewood – our school logo). Students learned about the Banksias and their importance as a habitat for birds and insects and how Noongar people make use of the features of the trees. We also talked about the bird species that frequent our area and how children can be bird spotters. Our Sustainability ‘Newbie Knights’ were fantastic mentors and helpers throughout the planting sessions.

Now the trees are planted and have their tree guards this area will be temporarily fenced. Trickle feed irrigation and mulch will be added in the coming weeks. Hopefully we will end up with a fantastic grove of Banksias.

We should hear shortly who the winning tender is for the Nature Playground refurbishment. We would like the builder to get going ASAP. It is planned that there is a joint opening of the refurbished Nature Playground and acknowledgement of the Queen’s Jubilee Planting with an open-air assembly next to the Nature Playground on Friday 9th December.

Newborough Netball

What a privilege it was to see all our five Newborough Netball teams play on Friday and Saturday the 12th and 13th of August. I really enjoyed the opportunity to see the girls play. Thank you, Head Coach Sonia J for providing the schedule. The weather was delightful for a change as the girls showed how much they have improved over the year. The coaches have done a wonderful job nurturing and helping the girls develop their skills and building a terrific team and club spirit. A big thanks to Tanya and Carly (Year 2’s), Blanch and Kate (Year 3’s), Miriam and Sonia (Year 4/5’s) and Jamie and Michelle (Year 5/6’s). There was great determination and intensity with all teams as they really showed the Newborough Way. In the first game the Year 3’s showed how much they have improved going down, just, in a close hard-fought effort. Two of the teams, the year 2’s and Years 5/6 showed great character to come from behind and have close wins. The Year 4/5’s were bamboozingly fast as they transitioned the ball into the goal shooters who hardly missed winning comfortably. All the teams greatly appreciate the support of parents, grandparents and siblings who really added to the atmosphere and nurturing of the girls. Best wishes for the remainder of the season and keep showing that Newborough Way, Netballers. You are fantastic.

RAT Kits Available

The school has a large number of RAT Kits available for families and staff. There are several varieties including boxes of 20 nasal or saliva kits and individual nasal kits.

These are available from the Front Office or email John.Worthy@eucation.wa.edu.au if you wish them to be given to a student to take home. A special service from Ron the Rodent Lab Rat who visited on Science Dress Up Day.

School Board Happenings

Hi everyone. My name is Callan Rose, and I am the Chair of the Newborough Primary School Board. I’d like to help the school community to have a better understanding of what the Board does so in future I’ll be providing a brief update in the school newsletter about what we’ve been up to.

First things first – a little bit about the Board! It’s comprised of elected parent and staff representatives, nominated community members, and of course our Principal, Mr John Worthy. We meet 6 times a year. There are some things that we need to make decisions and vote on but often we discuss things happening around the school, with each member sharing their thoughts and providing feedback to the Principal.

At our meeting last week, we discussed the results of the recent surveys of staff, students and parents, and the preliminary NAPLAP data. It was great to see such positive results, and to hear about the school’s plans to address areas for improvement. Mr Worthy also provided us with a lot of updates about things happening around the school, including progress on the Nature Play area and the work being done to appoint a new uniform provider.

Staff Update

Ms Lauren Danker, Year 5/6 Teacher, will be taking well earned Long Service Leave from the start of week 8, 5th September. Mr Thomas Scoulidis will replace Ms Danker. He is currently completing his final teaching practice with this class and has been working on handover for a smooth transition. We wish Ms Danker a restful break and look forward to her return in 2023.

Running Club 2022

We had an amazing turnout for Running Club this year. There were 54 runners from years 3 – 6 who got up early on cold, often wet Monday and Thursdays to have a run before school. Two courses were set up; a 300-metre run and a 600-metre run. Runners could record their time if they wished or simply just have a run. I was really impressed with the dedication of runners and the spirit which they ran.

A great team effort supporting each other. Thank you to the parents who helped out with timing and stretches. We even had a few parent runners. This Thursday I am putting on a pikelet and fresh fruit breakfast for runners who attended three or more sessions. Well done everyone involved.

DEPUTY NEWS

Attendance

This year has been quite disruptive for students, with the effects of Covid-19 being evidenced in our attendance figures. After reviewing the data from Semester 1 we have broken a long term (Pre Covid) trend of regular attendance. Our regular attendance for Semester 1 was 51%, it is usually between 92 and 94%. The biggest reason for non-attendance was due to illness. We thank you for keeping your children home when they are unwell and continue to encourage students to stay home if they are unwell. If you are having trouble getting your child to school or would like any further information about school absences, please email:

Newborough.PS@education.wa.edu.au

Parent/Carers Pick Up and Drop Off Changes

Now that COVID restrictions have lifted we are changing the process to allow Parents/Carers to drop off library bags, hats, lunchboxes etc. to classrooms/students/bags. Parents/Carers sign in at the front office on Passtab (will be given a Visitor sticker to wear), drop the item off to their child’s class, and then sign out from Passtab at the front office.

Parents/Carers continue to advise teachers and the front office via email for pick up for appointments etc. so children can be made ready and on time. Parents/Carers sign the child out at the front office, will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card (to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher so they know the student has been signed out), and then go to the classroom to pick up their child.

The new process will commence at the start of term three. This process will reduce the need for staff to bring children to the office for collection. It will also reduce the number of children waiting in the office corridor.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.

Notes are requested from parents for:

  • Any absence from school
  • Permission to go on vacation during term time
  • Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
  • Non participation in sport and physical education lessons

LATE ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL

Parents/guardians are reminded that students should not arrive at school before 8:20am. When gates open. Teachers open classrooms at 8:30am. There is no play before school.

School commences at 8:40am Sharp. Late arrivals need to go to the front office with their parents to sign in and get a LATE PASS.

SIGNING OUT EARLY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (e.g. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time - at least 24 hours beforehand, where possible. Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank. Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.

Money can be paid by online banking (please include your child’s surname and incursion/excursion name as reference). eg K Smith Edu-dance. Our school bank details are:

BSB: 016 350
Account No: 3408 71304

Booklists 2023 and Beyond

As many of you may know, Newborough Primary School organises students’ booklist/stationery requirements through the Newborough P&C. This is a major fundraiser for the P&C, providing valuable resources to the school.

This will be my last year managing the Booklist process and I am looking for someone to succeed me, shadowing me this year and taking over the following year.

Processing of orders occurs towards the end of Term 4, with packing and distribution occurring in the two weeks before school starts. If you have that time available and are interested, let me know.

All training will be provided!

Uniform Shop News

The Uniform Shop is having an online sale!!!!!!

The school and P&C are looking at options to outsource the uniform shop to an external uniform supplier. We will still run a second hand shop at school.

Currently we are greatly over stocked in some items/colours/styles, and are having an online sale to reduce our stock levels.

See if you can grab a bargain in your child's size. These items will say "SALE ITEM" and are limited.

  • Due to supplier issues during covid some faction shirts are in a slightly different shade these are the ones on sale. All are still school uniform however at a much reduced price!
  • We have some of the very popular microfibre shorts and the A-Line sports skorts on sale due to carrying too much stock but it's first in as numbers are limited! Maybe think ahead to next year too.
  • If your child feels the cold there are a limited number of size 4 long sleeve gold polo shirts (can be worn for PP and year 1). Also available are some long sleeve size 6 kindy shirts.
  • Due to excess stock in some sizes you might score a discounted microfibre jacket, or trackie pants, great for cooler Spring temperatures (please note that not all sizes will be reduced in this item). Think ahead to next winter and stock up.
  • There are also some plain green skorts (similar design to the tartan skort) available on sale.

All available to order via Quickcliq.

Any questions email: newboroughuniforms@gmail.com

Thank you
