Principal’s Introduction

Semester One Thank You Happy Holidays

Not too long to go and everyone can have a well-earned Semester break as we celebrate many achievements during terms one and two and prepare for the second half of the year. This term has been particularly difficult given the number of staff, students and families impacted by COVID-19. There is a system wide shortage of relief Teachers and relief Education Assistants making it difficult to find replacements. Thank you to our loyal and hard-working relief staff who have been very obliging and helpful. Thank you parents and the school community for your understanding and support.

In the last few weeks we have had some really heart-warming community events including the fabulous Edu-Dance, Cross Country and whole school parent assemblies. It’s wonderful to see so many parents/carers and extended family returning to events. The students really love having their parents and families see them in action and as a staff we greatly value this.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your focus on students wellbeing and learning this semester and wish you a very safe, restful and enjoyable holiday. We have so much to look forward to when school resumes for students on Tuesday 19th July. (Staff have a School Development Day on Monday 18th July)

COVID Update

We are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel with restrictions being lifted and most activities able to go back to normal. The removal of close contact rules and wearing of masks we saw a dramatic rise in the number of positive COVID cases in Term 2. Fortunately, most cases have been fairly mild due to high vaccination rates. There have been 84(37 Term 1) student and 19(7 Term 1) staff reporting positive cases. This combined with a significant colds and regular flu season has greatly impacted the attendance rate across the school putting significant pressure on learning programs as teachers are constantly having to catch students up.

Parent/Carers Pick Up and Drop Off Changes

Now that COVID restrictions have lifted we are changing the process to allow Parents/Carers to drop off library bags, hats, lunchboxes etc. to classrooms/students/bags. Parents/Carers sign in at the front office on Passtab (will be given a Visitor sticker to wear), drop the item off to their child’s class, and then sign out from Passtab at the front office. Some parents may be reluctant to do this so in that situation the front office will let a deputy or the principal know and they will assist. Some of our parents have not been at the school prior to COVID restrictions or are nervous to enter the school. We will encourage them but not force.

Parents/Carers continue to advise teachers and the front office via email for pick up for appointments etc. so children can be made ready and on time. Parents/Carers sign the child out at the front office, will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card (to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher so they know the student has been signed out), and then go to the classroom to pick up their child.

The new process will commence at the start of term three. This process will reduce the need for staff to bring children to the office for collection. It will also reduce the number of children waiting in the office corridor.

After School Play Returns

From Tuesday 19th July After School Play will return for those wishing to stay on school grounds a little longer to have a play and for parents to have a catch up.

  • It is a privilege to have after school play at school
  • Tuesdays (Early Close) play is only in the Nature Playground. This is meeting day for staff.
  • Parents are responsible for observing and managing their child(rens) play and behaviour
  • Playground rules apply at any time. This includes no screaming or shouting.
  • Junior toilets remain open till 3:30pm every school day
  • Students, parents move away from all verandahs – unless using the junior toilets or drink fountains
  • Kindy and Pre-primary children may have older siblings play in their areas.
  • Gates and toilets are locked at 3:30pm each day

Apply the school’s values   RESPECT   TEAM WORK   KINDNESS   CHALLENGE YOURSELF

The school encourages the use of the Nature Playground as first choice play area after school. We are very close to going to tender for the refurbishment of the Nature Playground. This will include more parent friendly areas for meeting and supervising play.

Edu Dance

How good were the Edu-Dance concerts? The children really enjoyed performing their dances to a real audience. It was a lot of fun and a great culmination of lessons provided by Edu-Dance each week. Our Edu-Dance teachers did a great job.

Thank you to Mrs Winton (Wednesday group) and Miss Starcevich (Thursday group). Well done to all the students who participated and gave it their all. Thank you parents for helping out with costumes and in some cases make up. The children looked fabulous and performed sensationally. A very big thanks also to Miss Tucknott who organised the whole event and to teachers and staff who helped out along the way.

Running Club

Before school Running Club will be open for students selected in the Cross Country Interschool team on Mondays and Thursdays until the Interschool Cross Country on Friday 5th August. A note will go home at the start of term ready for our first run on Thursday 21st July.

NAIDOC Week Assembly – Friday 1st July

This Year NAIDOC week is being celebrated in Week 10 this term, from Sunday 3rd July to Sunday 10th July. The theme is “Get up, Stand up, Show up.” Ms Watson’s Room 7 students will be hosting a celebration assembly on Friday, 1st July at 8:50am. Both Junior and Senior choirs will be performing and the whole school will be singing a special dual language version of the National Anthem (Koolbang Australia Kwop), which has been translated by the Walyalup Waangkan Noongar Language Group. The students are currently creating artworks based on the Noongar 6 seasons; Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang. We are entering the Makuru season, which is the coldest and wettest time of the year. There will be a display of some of these artworks at the assembly. We will also be showing a video of what NAIDOC week means to people in our school community.

Please come along and a join us in in standing up and showing up to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

The National Science Week theme for 2022 is: ‘Glass – More than meets the eye’. Each class will be doing a fun science learning activity based on this theme, and we would love you to be involved :-)

Our special week will also include a ‘Science Dress Up Day’ on Wednesday, 17th of August, so put your Science thinking caps on, and get creative with your dress up ideas!

I am looking forward to seeing you in the lab!

An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank. Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.
