Principal’s Introduction

Goodbyes and Best Wishes

I would like to take this final opportunity for the year to thank Parents, Students, Community Members and Staff for your sterling efforts over this year. Throughout the year we had the spectre of COVID restrictions and lockdowns but managed to pull through with flying colours. One of the most pleasing aspects of this year was the exceptional NAPLAN results for Years 3 and 5. All above Australian, State and Like School averages and performing in the High Performance/High Progress quadrant. This shows that our key strategies are working.

This is backed up with a range of data collected throughout the year.

Whilst there are so many people to thank I would like to single out several who have been absolutely wonderful. Miss Karen Tucknott, Mr Nick Stenhouse, Mrs Sharon Singleton, Ms Kate Tyndall, Mrs Laura D’Alonzo-Barkley and Mrs Wendy Clouston who are fantastic people to work with and do a great job around the Administration area. Aren’t we fortunate to have such a wonderful team of teachers and great support crew backing them up. I cannot speak more highly of this fantastic staff group.

A big thank you to Mr Wes Gregory and all the P&C team who work so tirelessly for our school running all the many activities that support our children and the school. The year started a little tentatively following lockdown during week one, with the rebirth of the Newbro Dads at the Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club culminating in the huge Camp Out earlier this term. The P&C ran a most successful Easter Raffle and Colour Run as well as the Canteen, Uniform Shop, Bookclub and Booklist right at the start of the year.

Sadly this is the last year at Newborough for several families who have contributed so much over many years. A big thank you to Wes and Bec Gregory and Karen and Andrew Winton. Your legacy is huge.

Sincere thanks to Mr Callan Rose who has led our School Board for a second year. This year we were able to undertake training welcoming new Community Members Mrs Neha Patel and Mr Richard Goodwin, new Parent members Mrs Becky McGuckin and Mrs Denise Sanderson and Staff Member, Miss Justine Watson. The Board ensures the school keeps focus on the Business Plan and supports the governance of the school.

We sadly say goodbye to several staff who are leaving us at the end of the year. Miss Callen Toner, Mrs Kara Varcoe, Mrs Coleen Dayman, Miss Shereen Sidhu and our retiring School Psych Mrs Rita Burgess. We will miss them all and wish them all the best in the future.

All the class structures, classroom allocations and student placements have concluded and are under lock and key till we announce these on Booklist Day – Friday 29th January next year. Classes are not announced any earlier given that late changes are possible.

For all those students, staff and families who are not with us next year please take our very best wishes and appreciation for your contributions to the school. You will always be part of the Newborough family. Keep in touch and know you will be warmly welcomed back as a visitor to our school.

I wish everyone a very safe, enjoyable and Merry Christmas, New Year and holiday break.

School Reopens in 2022

Office staff and Administration commence on Tuesday 25th January 2022 at 9:00am. Tuesday 26th January is the Australia Day Public holiday. Teachers resume on Thursday 27th January. Class lists will be posted on classroom doors on Friday 28th January to coincide with Booklist and Uniform Shop. These will be open from 9:00 – 11:00am.

School Review

Last Wednesday, during the 40 Celsius heat wave, Staff, Parents and Students met in groups with the Review Team, Mrs Maxine Augustson and Mrs Isobel Comrie to validate the school’s self-review process and improvement outcomes. We should receive the official report early next year. From all accounts we have done very well and will be offered three years till our next review. This will align with the Department’s next Strategic Plan and the development of our next Business Plan. Thank you to all those who gave of their time and adjusted busy end of year schedules to support the school.

Vaccination for COVID Update

As you may be aware, all School Staff are required to be double dose vaccinated before Term 1, 2022 starts.

The State Government has issued Education Worker (Restrictions on Access) Directions (No. 3), which are published on wa.gov.au. These Directions include vaccination requirements for visitors entering school sites.

Students are not required to be vaccinated.

Parents/carers are not required to be vaccinated when:

  • dropping off or picking up their child from school;
  • volunteering at school on an ad hoc basis;
  • attending an event such as an assembly or parent teacher interview; or
  • entering the school after hours.

‘Ad hoc basis’ means attendance at no more than one education facility no more than once per week.

Parents/carers are required to provide vaccination evidence (single dose vaccinated from 1 January 2022 and double dose vaccinated from 31 January 2022) or exemption when:

  • volunteering at the school more than once a week (this includes volunteering at the school canteen, uniform store or an in-class literacy or numeracy program);
  • working in an unpaid capacity at the school more than once a week; or
  • participating in an endorsed program at the school where parent attendance is required (such as KindiLink).

The following are acceptable forms of evidence of COVID-19 vaccination or exemption:

  • written confirmation of the COVID-19 vaccination issued by the Department of Health;
  • the COVID-19 digital certificate, which shows only your COVID-19 vaccinations. Services Australia has information on how to get your COVID-19 digital certificate;
  • your immunisation history statement, which shows all vaccinations you’ve had. Services Australia has information on how to get your immunisation history statement;
  • an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate issued by the Commonwealth Government. This shows the COVID-19 vaccination recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register;
  • medical exemption issued by the Australian Immunisation Register; or
  • temporary exemption granted by the WA Chief Health Officer.

We are committed to ensuring our school is a COVID-19 safe space. We have been provided with a clear direction of what we all need to do to keep students, colleagues and our community safe. If you have any queries, please contact 92780450.

Thank you for your support.

Containers for Change

Newborough Primary School Container Deposit Scheme Id: C10245611

No doubt there will be plenty of Containers for Change 10 Cent containers used during the holidays. Save them up to bring to school or attend one of the many Containers for Change depots and use the school’s Id: C10245611

This term we have saved over 1000 containers from landfill and raised over $100 that goes towards our Sustainability activities. Sadly over 200 glass bottles were smashed by unwanted visitors two weeks ago with three invasions of the school.

Please keep an eye our when you go past the school. If you see anyone without authority in the school grounds call School Security on 92644771 or the Police on 131444.

Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse Concert

What a performance by Gina and Guy! Everyone in attendance raved about the concert. It was a heap of fun and a great learning experience connecting Noongar language to the land and people. Gina said she really enjoyed coming back to her old school and was very impressed by the school’s, particularly student’s, knowledge of Noongar language and appreciation of the oldest living culture in the world. Hopefully we can get them back soon.

“So this is Christmas and what have we done? Another year over and a new one just began.”

The Department of Education has provided the school with a new VOIP telephone system which has meant that we needed a different telephone number. We strongly suggest that parents make a note of the new number and start using it now, in case the old number is terminated earlier than anticipated.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (free call) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

08 9278 0450

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.

P&C News

Last Day of School – Thurday 16 December 2021

Message from the P&C President

Hello Newborough,

On behalf of the P and C I’d like to wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas. We have had a great year together. We have had a colour run, an Easter egg raffle, a disco, a sausage and a great school sleep out that was organised by the enthusiastic Newbro’s. In between school book lists and uniforms have been organised, and work has begun on organising the nature play upgrades.

There is one final event, the end of year get together on Thursday the 16th after school. Please join us for a big water fight (No water balloons though), bouncy things and an ice cream truck. Parents can reminisce about the trials and triumphs of the year, and children can have one last run around together at school before the holidays.

On a personal note, this is our last year at the school I’d like to thank everyone who got involved this year, and over the last 11. It’s been a great school for our children, we have made lots of friends and thoroughly enjoyed joining in to make a vibrant school community.

We wish everyone the best for the coming years and look forward to hearing about the good things still happening at Newborough Primary School.

Wes Gregory – President.

Canteen News

Sushi Day

Our second Sushi Day was even bigger than our first and class Canteen baskets were full with close to 600 pieces of sushi being made onsite!! It was a great feat and a massive thank you goes to our wonderful and very talented parent sushi masters Rina, Chigisa, Catherine, Jenifer & Cathy. Here are some photos of the team in action.

Thank you!!!

Thank you to our wonderful customers, both Students and Staff, who have supported the Canteen and kept us extremely busy. It’s a privilege to provide the service and we love seeing all the happy faces enjoying our food.

We would like to sincerely thank all of the volunteers who have given up their time to work in the Canteen this year. Many have come a number of times through the year and some even multiple times every week. Volunteers are essential to the running of the Canteen and we couldn’t have done it without your hard work and generosity.

Canteen Re-opening 2022

The Canteen will re-open again on the first day of Term 1, 2022. We will be testing recipes over the holidays and look forward to providing new menu items to enjoy.

Regards
Amanda
Canteen Manager
