Principal’s Introduction
School Board Nominations
Are you looking for a way to be more engaged in your child’s school? Are you looking to make a positive contribution to the direction of school? We are seeking nominations from parents/legal guardians to join the School Board in the role of Parent Representative. You’ll join a team including other parent representatives along with the Principal, staff and community representatives that provides advice to assist the School to identify, plan and resource its strategic objectives.
You do not need any prior experience of working on a Board and we encourage diverse membership that is representative of our varied school community. New members of the Board will be offered training and support. You can find detailed information about the School Board on our school website
https://aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newboroughps.wa.edu.au%2Four-school%2Fschool-board%2F&data=04%7C01%7CJohn.Worthy%40education.wa.edu.au%7C87073cf9079740809f0e08d87faaf39e%7Ce08016f9d1fd4cbb83b0b76eb4361627%7C0%7C0%7C637399719495849496%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=F4gcV%2B41LtJpAA%2BkZoj6s81ZjURR5tPDphNWIojIFHA%3D&reserved=0
If you are interested please email or supply in writing your expression of interest to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au by 3:00pm, Monday 15th November 2021.
If there are more nominees than positions available candidates will be asked to provide a 250-word brief about themselves and what they can bring to the Board. All parents/legal guardians in the school will then have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate.
For further information please contact John Worthy (Principal) email John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au , phone 99278 0450 or Callan Rose (Board Chair) on 0410 490 482, email callan.rose@uwa.edu.au
Student Placements for 2022 – Important Information for the School’s Planning
To help the school as we plan ahead can you please advise:
- If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you, please let us know in the office by the 5th November 2021. This will assist us with planning for 2022.
During Term 4, Newborough PS’s class organisation for the following year takes place. A number of considerations are taken into account based on improving student performance. These include: staffing numbers, resourcing, recommended class sizes, a balance of academic abilities within each class, the need to evenly distribute students with special needs (academically, socially and behaviourally), an equitable distribution of gender, the ability to work independently if placed in a multi-age class. It is very likely that there will be a number of multi-age classes across the school in 2022.
If you wish to communicate to me your child’s special needs or considerations, please present your correspondence to the Principal via the office marked “Private and Confidential” by Friday 19th November (Week 6). You may wish to email your correspondence to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au. Please note, this information will be considered when placing your child, however, all parent preferences may not be facilitated. Requesting a particular teacher will not be considered. Only sound educational reasons will be considered. This information will be added to the data we already have.
The placement of children and the make-up of classes is made in consultation with teachers. It is not a parent decision. Every child is equally important. The final decision for placements rests with the Principal. If you have any queries or would like to discuss your child’s situation, please contact me to make an appointment.
Class Pass Rewards
Our new pizzas ovens are ready to go. As classes achieve their next Class Pass they are being offered the opportunity for each student to make their own, custom made mini pizza. This week we are starting with the year sixes as it is not too far from their big graduation and hugely busy time for transition to high school. Friday is Miss Toner’s Room 15 class and Monday for Ms Phillip’s Room 16. The only stipulation is that they must use at least one ingredient that comes from our Kitchen Garden. After all we are promoting healthy eating and learning about good food.
We had a test run with the Sustainability Leaders Sally and Neve to work out the process and ensure we are ready for the masses. The pizzas looked great, smelled wonderful and fortunately tasted delicious. Teachers will notify parents when it is their turn. We do suggest that children bring along extra food if they don’t think the pizza is enough or prefer something different.

New Telephone Number
The Department of Education has provided the school with a new VOIP telephone system which has meant that we needed a different telephone number. We experienced a few teething problems earlier this week with the Telstra changeover, however for the next few months, calls to our old phone number are being forwarded to the new number. We strongly suggest that parents make a note of the new number and start using it now, in case the old number is terminated earlier than anticipated.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY
If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.
Deputy News
New Mathematics Program: Oxford Maths Parent Information Session: Tuesday 9th November 1.30-2.30pm
As you are aware, Newborough Primary School will be introducing a new Mathematics program in 2022 called Oxford Maths.
We have organised a parent information session on Tuesday 9th November from 1.30-2.30pm on the program and how it is linked to the Australian Curriculum, assessment and reporting.
The parent session will be held in the School Library. More information will be sent out closer to the date.
Pre-Primary - Year Five Presentation Morning
Save the date: Tuesday 14th December 8.50am in the Undercover Area
This year, the Pre-Primary to Year 5 Presentation Assembly will be held on Tuesday 14th December at 8.50am in the school’s undercover area. This Presentation Assembly will recognise students, regardless of the Year Level in split grades, who have achieved their classes’ Academic, Citizenship and Endeavour Awards, as well as classroom Fitness Awards. The new 2022 Year 6 Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl will also be announced along with the Faction Captains for 2022.
Academic Award: This award is presented to students who achieve not only excellent results across all learning areas but displays a true virtue of wisdom. These students show a love for learning; they challenge themselves to do better; they show creativity, curiosity, are a critical thinker and respond and act upon feedback. The winners of this award are not always the student who achieves the highest grades consistently in the class. These students earn this award through both their academic achievement and character strengths to pursue academic excellence. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.
Citizenship Award: This award is presented to students for showing excellent civics and citizenship qualities and the virtue of humanity. These students show kindness, teamwork, respect, warmth and are genuine in their approach to everyone. These students show a strength in understanding others and treating others fairly. They set an example in their understanding of what needs to be done and they use their initiative to help others. They show leadership, and modesty, in encouraging and organising others in an unbiased way. The recipients of this award are community minded. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.
Endeavour Award: This award is presented to students that show the strengths that help them persevere, apply consistent effort and set goals to improve. They challenge themselves regularly, face difficulties with a growth mindset, finish what is started, shows valour and bravery and reflects on and talks about their learning and growth. These students want to improve and want to learn and they work hard to do so. Their academic achievement may be at any level as this award recognises student aptitude over academic grades. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.
If you have any queries in regards to the end of year Pre-Primary to Year 5 awards, please do not hesitate to contact me. Karen.tucknott2@education.wa.edu.au
PEACPRIMARY EXTENSION AND CHALLENGE
YEAR 4 STUDENT ASSESSMENT AND IDENTIFICATION
Statewide testing of Year 4 students for inclusion in the Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) program in Years 5 and 6 has been conducted during 2021.
PEAC offers a supplementary program for identified students and provides them with the opportunity to extend, challenge and develop their thinking skills.
Identification of these students has been conducted through testing, marking and ranking of each student’s results from over 22,000 students across WA.
Placements into PEAC, based on testing, are highly competitive. Your child’s results in this test can be used to inform their educational provision. Students who were successful in the identification process have been notified of their placement. If you would like further information about your child’s results, please contact Mr Nick Stenhouse at Nick.Stenhouse@education.wa.edu.au
Year 2 Room 7
As part of their Digital Technology unit, students in Room 7 have been learning how to code an algorithm into a little robot called a Beebot. The students attached felt tipped pens to their robot and created this beautiful piece of art, by giving a specific series of instructions to their robots. Well done Room 7!

Please get in touch with me ASAP with any questions or if you're willing to put your hand up and we can do the term 4 order together. - michelle.slobodan@gmail.com

Icy Treats
Our Icy Treats (Ice Cream / Icy Poles / Slushies) are very popular, particularly in the hotter months. In consultation with the school Admin team, we have decided to make a few changes which has been communicated to all children through their classroom Teacher.
- If a child wishes to purchase an Icy Treat at Lunch time, they must purchase it with their own money. No sharing of money or buying for friends will be allowed.
- Children are only permitted to purchase 1 Icy Treat for themselves.
- Slushies will return in Week 3. However, to allow the younger children to finish their Slushies before the end of Lunch time, a smaller cup will be provided to Years 1 and 2 for $1.
- Years 3 to 6 will be able to purchase the usual size cup for $2.
- Icy Treats will stop being sold at 1:30pm.
- Children will have a designated area to eat their Icy Treats, supervised by Staff
