Principal’s Introduction

Welcome Back Term Four

What a busy and productive start to the term already! Welcome back to Term 4 and a very special welcome to our new students and families. We commenced Interm swimming lessons last Wednesday with nearly 100% of students attending. The only ones not attending have medical exemptions.

Preparation is well underway for our fabulous Musical ‘Matilda’. The key roles have been selected and are learning their parts, props are being made and painted and all Year 3-6 students are learning the songs. Tickets go on sale this week. On the weekend our choir and Baldivis Gardens Primary School performed at Telethon with great distinction singing this year’s theme song ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’. It was very uplifting. Thank you to Mrs Snelson and everyone involved. Congratulations to Mrs Snelson for her hard work in preparing our choir for this wonderful opportunity – We are very lucky to have such a dedicated Performing Arts Teacher..

In a couple of weeks, we have the much-anticipated Newbros ‘Camp Out’ on Hazlitt Field. This is a great opportunity for Dads and kids to have a sleepover and Mums to get a short break. It was lots of fun last time so I am sure this one will be too.

During Weeks Three and Four we will be conducting a broad range of assessments to monitor progress, assist with reporting and help plan learning programs for the future. The school recently received our 2021 NAPLAN results. These results were very pleasing with both Year 3 and 5 students collectively achieving above National, State and Like Schools in ALL categories.

The Year Threes excelled in Reading and Grammar & Punctuation with significant scores above one standard deviation in both areas.

If you are interested in the school’s progress in NAPLAN there will be a session to look more closely at our results and future directions at the Open Board Meeting on Monday 2nd November at 5:00pm in the Library. Parents, staff and community members are welcome to attend this Open Board Meeting. Our Critical Friend, for this meeting is the local Member for Scarborough Mr Stuart Aubrey.

Later this term the school will be reviewed by the Department of Education to ensure we are operating well. Our School Review visit will be on Wednesday 8th December. Prior to this I will submit a range of information and evidence to the reviewers for their consideration and to develop lines of enquiry.

Then of course we have all the usual Term 4 events such as Graduation, Awards, planning for 2022 and our much anticipated Whole School Incursion concert with Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse on December 10th.

Have a wonderful term.

Student Placements for 2022

If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you, please let us know in the office by the 5th November 2021. This will assist us with planning for 2022.

As is always the case during Term 4, Newborough PS’ class organisation for the following year takes place. A number of considerations are taken into account based on improving student performance.

These include: staffing numbers, resourcing, recommended class sizes, a balance of academic abilities within each class, the need to evenly distribute students with special needs (academically, socially and behaviourally), an equitable distribution of gender, the ability to work independently if placed in a multi-age class.

It is very likely that there will be a number of multi-age classes across the school in 2022.

If you wish to communicate to me your child’s special needs or considerations, please present your correspondence to the Principal via the office marked “Private and Confidential” by Friday 19th November (Week 6). You may wish to email your correspondence to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au.

Please note, this information will be considered when placing your child, however, all parent preferences may not be facilitated. Requesting a particular teacher will not be considered. Only sound educational reasons will be considered. This information will be added to the data we already have.

The placement of children and the make-up of classes is made in consultation with teachers. It is not a parent decision. Every child is equally important. The final decision for placements rests with the Principal. If you have any queries, or would like to discuss this, please contact me to make an appointment.

It is unlikely that the structure of classes, their location and teacher will be presented at the end of this year. With our numbers constantly fluctuating it would be unfair to announce classes this year and then restructure when students return.

Classes will be posted on classroom doors when you pick up your booklist items at the start of 2022.

Teachers Make a Difference to the Lives of Newborough Students Every Day.

World Teachers’ Day 2021 is celebrated across Australia on Friday 29 October. It’s a chance to recognise and thank teachers who work in our public schools.

Despite the challenges of last year, teachers bring their best to work and continue to put their students first.

Teachers play an important role in our community and we thank them for their passion and dedication to inspire children and young people.

Lighting up WA

This year, the Department of Education is partnering with the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia, Catholic Education in Western Australia and Edith Cowan University to light up WA red, yellow, blue and green.

Perth’s Matagarup Bridge, Optus Stadium and other Perth landmarks will be lit red, yellow, blue and green on World Teachers’ Day to acknowledge and recognise teachers across Western Australia.

Get involved

There are many ways our community can show our appreciation and support.

Parents, get your child to complete a thank you note for their teacher.

Pizza Ovens Ready to Go

During the last week of Term 3 Neel and Beau (Year 6) and Elizabeth, Angie, Maxim and Nathan (Year 4) assisted putting together our three new portable Pizza Ovens purchased as kits from Bunnings. It was a lot of fun putting them together and quite a challenge. They have been fired up and are ready to go.

This is part of our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gardens program, to help teach children about healthy food and growing our own vegies to compliment the ingredients we put on the pizzas. Our rule for making pizzas is that at least one school grown vegie has to be included on the pizza. We will start with smaller individual custom made pizzas.

Our new Pizza Ovens and some cooking tools are ready for the first cooking session. This will be with the Year 6 students once they earn their next ‘Class Pass’. After they have had a go then we will open the offer to all classes. Mrs Meyer in the canteen has kindly offered some fridge space to keep the ingredients cool and safe.

Kambarang—season of birth

Second spring: October-November

Transformational time of year
Flowers abound

The lifestyle for the Nyoongar communities during Kambarang

During the Kambarang season, we see an abundance of colours and flowers exploding all around us. The yellows of many of the Acacias continue to abound, along with some of the Banksias and many other smaller delicate flowering plants including the Kangaroo Paw and Orchids. Also during this time the Balgas will also start to flower, especially if they've been burnt in the past year or closely shaved.

One of the most striking displays of flowers to be seen during this season will be the "Mooja", or Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia). The bright orange/yellow flowers serve to signal the heat is on its way.

For the animals, October is also the most likely time of the year that you'll encounter a snake as the reptiles start to awaken from their hibernation and look to make the most of the warm to assist them in getting enough energy to look for food. It's also a time that many young families of birds will be singing out for their parents to feed them. Koolbardies (Magpies) will also be out protecting their nests and their babies.

Many things are undergoing transformation with the warm change in the weather.

Longer dry periods accompany a definite warming trend.

Sustainability

Don’t Forget we are still collecting 10 Cent Containers for Change. Please bring them in on either a Tuesday or Thursday before school to the trailer located near the Canteen. On other days you can place them in the wheelie bin next to the trailer for the Sustainability Leaders to sort out. This term we have set a target for 1 000 containers. That will make $100 with every cent going to Sustainability activities in the school.

Alternatively, you can take 10 cent containers to a designated depot and provide the Newborough PS Container Deposit Scheme Id C10245611 Thank you to those who already do this.

We also collect batteries (No 12 Volt batteries please. They aren’t suitable) and these can be left in the green bin near the rear office entry.

New Telephone Number

The Department of Education has provided the school with a new VOIP telephone system which has meant that we needed a different telephone number. For the next few months, calls to our old phone number are being forwarded to the new number. We strongly suggest that parents make a note of the new number and start using it now, in case the old number is terminated earlier than anticipated.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

We have organised a parent information session on Tuesday 9th November from 1.30-2.30pm on the program and how it is linked to the Australian Curriculum, assessment and reporting.

BookLists for 2022

A heads up to all parents and guardians! The School is currently working on the Booklists for 2022. These usually cost approximately $35 for Kindergarten to approximately $180 for the upper primary years. This excludes the Annual Voluntary Contribution and P& C Contribution. We appreciate that parents will have many costs coming up for school in the next few months. We would like to prepare you for these costs for next year. We anticipate the Book Lists will be sent home in Week 4 of Term 4 after consultation with staff, P&C Booklist Co-ordinator and the School Board.

Pre-Primary - Year Five Presentation Morning

Save the date: Tuesday 14th December 8.50am in the Undercover Area

This year, the Pre-Primary to Year 5 Presentation Assembly will be held on Tuesday 14th December at 8.50am in the school’s undercover area. This Presentation Assembly will recognise students, regardless of the Year Level in split grades, who have achieved their classes’ Academic, Citizenship and Endeavour Awards, as well as classroom Fitness Awards. The new 2022 Year 6 Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl will also be announced along with the Faction Captains for 2022.

Academic Award: This award is presented to students who achieve not only excellent results across all learning areas but displays a true virtue of wisdom. These students show a love for learning; they challenge themselves to do better; they show creativity, curiosity, are a critical thinker and respond and act upon feedback. The winners of this award are not always the student who achieves the highest grades consistently in the class. These students earn this award through both their academic achievement and character strengths to pursue academic excellence. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

Citizenship Award: This award is presented to students for showing excellent civics and citizenship qualities and the virtue of humanity. These students show kindness, teamwork, respect, warmth and are genuine in their approach to everyone. These students show a strength in understanding others and treating others fairly. They set an example in their understanding of what needs to be done and they use their initiative to help others. They show leadership, and modesty, in encouraging and organising others in an unbiased way. The recipients of this award are community minded. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

Endeavour Award: This award is presented to students that show the strengths that help them persevere, apply consistent effort and set goals to improve. They challenge themselves regularly, face difficulties with a growth mindset, finish what is started, shows valour and bravery and reflects on and talks about their learning and growth. These students want to improve and want to learn and they work hard to do so. Their academic achievement may be at any level as this award recognises student aptitude over academic grades. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

If you have any queries in regards to the end of year Pre-Primary to Year 5 awards, please do not hesitate to contact me. Karen.tucknott2@education.wa.edu.au

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Term 4 Menu

We are currently working on the new menu for Term 4. We will have some new lighter snack and lunch options as the weather warms up.

Icy Treats

Our Icy Treats (Ice Cream / Icy Poles / Slushies) are very popular, particularly in the hotter months. In consultation with the school Admin team, we have decided to make a few changes which has been communicated to all children through their classroom Teacher.

  • If a child wishes to purchase an Icy Treat at Lunch time, they must purchase it with their own money. No sharing of money or buying for friends will be allowed.
  • Children are only permitted to purchase 1 Icy Treat for themselves.
  • Slushies will return in Week 3. However, to allow the younger children to finish their Slushies before the end of Lunch time, a smaller cup will be provided to Years 1 and 2 for $1.
  • Years 3 to 6 will be able to purchase the usual size cup for $2.
  • Icy Treats will stop being sold at 1:30pm.
  • Children will have a designated area to eat their Icy Treats, supervised by Staff
