Principal’s Introduction

Holiday Arrangements

On behalf of all the staff I wish everyone a very safe and enjoyable break. Hopefully the weather is good and everyone can enjoy some fun and recovery time for those who have been ill. Don’t forget the Perth Royal Show. I’ll be going.

This has been another busy term culminating with two fantastic events that really shows the uniqueness of Newborough PS. Firstly the efforts of our Interschool Athletics team who battled hard all day. Whilst we didn’t win the points our team did very well and performed with distinction, with spirit and great sportsmanship.

Mrs Dayman, Mr Stenhouse, Miss Abbonizio, Miss Arndt and Miss Hains were so proud of everyone in the team who gave their whole efforts performing brilliantly on the day. It was lovely to hear that our school values shone through with terrific sportsmanship and team spirit. Thank you to all the staff and parents who assisted on the days and parents and friends who cheered so loudly and long.

The next big highlight was the wonderful Year 6 Enterprise Fete with students planning, organising, managing and using interpersonal skills through a broad range of really interesting stalls spaced all around the quadrangle. A bit like our Cross Country and School Athletics Carnival we had to reschedule for the Djilba weather. There was a lot of excitement from Kindy upwards as students visited stalls, played games and activities and helped raise funds for our graduating students. This year the fete raised $2200.

I am looking forward to the Choir performing this Friday evening at the WA Massed Choir concert at the Perth Concert Hall following the wonderful IMSS (School of Instrumental Music) concert on Wednesday.

The school office re-opens for staff on Monday 11th October. All staff will be participating in a range of School Development with the focus on our School Review and preparation for a great term 4.

Students Return on Tuesday 12th October.

New Telephone Number

The Department of Education has provided the school with a new VOIP telephone system which has meant that we needed a different telephone number. We experienced a few teething problems earlier this week with the Telstra changeover, however for the next few months, calls to our old phone number are being forwarded to the new number. We strongly suggest that parents make a note of the new number and start using it now, in case the old number is terminated earlier than anticipated.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Kindergarten Café News

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all families for your support of our highly successful Kindy Café, held at the Newborough sports carnival. We really appreciate all of the contributions made by our Kindy families and the support of the school community in once again making the Kindy Cafe such a great success.

This year we raised $637.50, which is an outstanding achievement.

Special thanks to the Hanzl family for the generous loan of their shade shelter and to our tireless ‘band of helpers’ who worked hard to make it such a success. Great ‘Teamwork” everyone!

The funds raised at the Kindy Café have been used to purchase our special new Kindy car for the nature playground.

Thank you.

WA Massed Choir Festival

Our senior performance choir has been hard at work learning a repertoire of 11 songs for their performance at Perth Concert Hall in the WA Massed Choir Festival on Friday, 24th September.

Good luck to Sakura Yamashita for her solo performance and the senior choir. There are still tickets available on the evening if you have not purchased yours yet.

TELETHON 2021

On Sunday, 19th September, the senior choir was filmed for a promo video for Telethon. What an amazing experience this was! They were joined by WAAPA students and had to learn the choreography on the day. This year they will be performing on the community stage on Sunday, 17th October as well. Looking forward to yet another new experience with my hard working students!

World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day is commemorated on 10th October every year, with this year's theme being, World Mental Health Day in an Unequal World. In Australia, the national campaign's motto is "Look after your mental health, Australia".

In Western Australia, a week in October is set aside to raise awareness of mental health issues and to engage in conversations about mental health to improve the mental health and wellbeing of our community. Mental Health Week this year is from 9 to 16 October, with the theme being, "Mental Health starts with our Children".

We are encouraged to pause and think about the importance of children's experiences and wellbeing, starting from infancy through to adulthood. The mental health of our children affects the development of the brain and functioning, speech and language, learning success, social skills, resilience and wellbeing.

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS: 0409 088 585 (preferred method)
Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone: 9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.

Scholastic Bookclub

Book Club needs your help!

We are looking for a volunteer (or more than one) to take over coordinating the book club for the school. Unfortunately, I have had to take on more hours at work and no longer have time to fit this in.

I will still be available to help and answer any questions so don't be scared to put your hand up.

Please get in touch with me ASAP with any questions or if you're willing to put your hand up and we can do the term 4 order together. - michelle.slobodan@gmail.com

Thanks you.

School Disco – 9 September 2021

We hope everyone had an amazing time at the School Disco in week 8. From all accounts the feedback has been really positive and it appears all the students had a fantastically fun, crazy, fluro evening of awesomeness!

It was wonderful to see so many kids (and parents) attending and having a good time. Huge thanks as always to our wonderful volunteers, next time we will be sure to order more supplies of food and glow items. A late night dash to IGA was needed to keep our senior students fed and watered.

How much did everyone love our new DJ team, Perth Party Time. We thought they did a smashing job of keeping everyone entertained on the dance floor and were impressed with their music selection and ability to play games and keep the crowd involved. Kelly Joy and Glenn would appreciate anyone leaving them a review at the link below:

Canteen News

New Canteen Equipment

We are so excited that our new commercial oven and dishwasher have been installed in the Canteen. We are extremely grateful to the P&C for their generosity in approving the purchases. We would also like to extend a particular “Thank you” to Laurie McCallum for his co-ordination of the product purchases and installation. We very much appreciate his assistance.

The new equipment has already made a noticeable difference in both efficiency and quality of cooking.

Term 4 Menu

We are currently working on the new menu for Term 4. We will have some new lighter snack and lunch options as the weather warms up.

Our ever popular Slushies will return in Week 3 of Term 4. However, to allow the younger children to finish their Slushies before the end of Lunch time, a smaller cup will be provided to Years 1 & 2 for $1. Years 3 to 6 will be able to purchase the usual size cup for $2.

Canteen Open

Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays

Volunteers

We would like to particularly thank the Newborough Dads who have been helping often in the Canteen lately. It contributes to the atmosphere of the Canteen when we have both Mums and Dads volunteering. The children really enjoy seeing their parents at Recess or Lunch (and love being able to get a free ice cream for their efforts!).

Please keep a lookout for an e-mail from your Parent Rep when it is your class year's week to assist. As always, if you have any spare time and wish to assist, please email me at newborough.canteen.manager1@gmail.com. We are always looking for help Monday / Wednesday / Friday from 9am - 11am & 11am - 1pm. However any time you can spare is very much appreciated.

Regards
Amanda
Canteen Manager

NEWBOROUGH PRIMARY SCHOOL NETBALL CLUB

WINTER SEASON WRAP-UP

Newborough netball has had another fantastic year, with over 80 boys & girls participating in competition netball teams (year 2-6) or our fabulous NetSetGO introductory program at school (PP-Year 1).

Thanks to all of our wonderful volunteer coaches and team managers who have made it all possible – Gabby Richardson, Nat Alach, Tanya Johnson, Julie O’Sullivan, Sonia Johansen, Jamie Maxwell, Michelle de Piazzi, Larissa Gannaway, Warren Gannaway, Miriam Lopes, Kate Brandis, Blanche Blakeney, Renae Hughes, Demi Webb, Nick Stenhouse, Zoe Hadley; and our amazing NetSetGO program coaches Tanya Cawthorne, Carly Fowkes, Chenoa Walsh, Kathy Lu, and Tenelle Sherratt. Also a huge thanks to Jacob Martin for supporting us as treasurer.

All of our teams had a successful year of skills development and great performances on court.

I would also like to acknowledge the Interschool Netball Teams who took out the A and B division premiers at the interschool carnival, against tough competition from local schools.

Congratulations to our 2009 birthdate Year 6s who were eligible to trial for the Perth Netball Association talent development pathway and went on to be selected for representative teams for the Association State Netball Championships:

Zamia W 12U Team 1
Sienna A 12U Team 3
Olivia B 12U Team 3
Sarchi P 12U Team 3

They worked super hard in the training program and had a great weekend of high level netball at the championships.

Also congratulations to Zamia W who made it through to the final round of selections for the 12U WA State Netball team, an excellent result up against the older Year 7 girls.

Thanks to our wonderful Year 6s who participated in the netball leadership program volunteering their time to help the younger teams – we will present their certificates at assembly this week.

Finally thanks to Mr Worthy and the Newborough Primary staff for supporting netball, nearly all junior netball in our region is run through the local primary schools as there are almost no junior clubs outside of the school system, so we rely on the support of school to allow training etc – thanks very much. The players and their families are very grateful.

Good luck to some of our players who are continuing with Spring Netball Season in Term 4. Feel free to get in touch with me anytime if you have questions about the Newborough Netball program. I have absolutely loved my time coordinating Newborough Netball the last three years and I am also excited to handover to the very capable hands of Sonia Johansen who will be taking over as Newborough Netball Coordinator next year – thanks for agreeing to take on a very big job! I’m sure everyone will provide support to continue the excellent reputation of Newborough netball club for great sportsmanship & netball skills development.
