Principal’s Introduction

Student Leaders Shine

Our Student Leaders have really stepped up in the last few weeks with some very important ambassadorial roles. Owen, Nina, Harry and Leila joined me at Coles Karrinyup to draw the Book Week raffle held in the store on Thursday 26th August. The staff at Coles held a raffle and paid to dress up as book characters then donated the funds back to the school. Just over $200 was raised. Student leaders will collect ideas and make decisions on how this money can best be used by the school to support all our students.

Last week the Student Leaders greeted and welcomed our important visitors who attended the Scarborough Electorate Education Forum on Tuesday 1st September. From all accounts from our local Member, Stuart Aubrey, Minister for Education and Training, Sue Ellery, Principals and P&C Presidents our leaders did a great job welcoming and promoting the school.

Tree Planting Update

As the season of Djilba warms the longer sunlight days, brings in the summer winds and the rain becomes spasmodic our new trees continue to establish and grow. Each class has two or three Tree Monitors who go out twice a week and water their classes’ trees. Most have taken and started to thrive. As expected we have lost a few along the way. Here is a little video made by Scarboro Toyota and Planet Ark who, along with the City of Stirling, were our big sponsors.

Scarborough Electorate Education Forum

Last Wednesday, 1st September, I joined fellow local MLA Stuart Aubrey as convenor, Principals, P&C Presidents and Board Chairs of Scarborough Electorate Public Schools to share our successes, concerns and ideas with the Minister of Education and Training, Ms Sue Ellery, at Newborough Primary School. The Minister outlined a range of election promise initiatives and educational improvements currently being undertaken in schools. This included facility upgrades such as Science Laboratories, STEM, and Early Childhood, additional School Psych time, Mental Health support for students and staff, building upgrades in STEM, improvements to the Complaints process and much more. Each school then had the opportunity to share their successes and discuss areas of concern. Newborough was well represented with P&C President Wes Gregory, Board Chair Callan Rose and myself. We put forward that our school needs a facilities upgrade for classrooms and the Administration. We have shortfalls in teaching areas to cope with new technologies, teaching methodology and for students with special needs. We also expressed concern around the processes design and construct for facility upgrades such as our own Nature Playground. Other schools raised concerns about not having a perimeter fence, overcrowding and difficulties getting transportables, car parking and traffic management, shortages of teachers and relief teachers and some non-teaching staff. The Minister listened, took notes and indicated that whilst she cannot make direct promises she will work through these issues with Stuart and relevant Departments and Ministries.

Feedback from participants has been most positive and appreciative of the opportunity to meet with the Minister. It was a great opportunity to showcase and highlight Newborough as well.

Complaints Process

The Department of Education has updated the Complaints Process for schools. This can be found on the Department of Education website at Understand the complaints process - Department of Education

I encourage school community members to contact the school as early as possible if you have concerns. Talking to your child’s teacher, year coordinator, school administration or principal is the best place to start.

Raise the matter with the principal if:

  • you were not able to achieve a satisfactory outcome with the teacher or staff member
  • the matter is about the conduct of a teacher or staff member
  • the matter is about another aspect of school life that is impacting your child’s education.

Contact the school to request an appointment to discuss your concerns.

Raise the matter with the education regional office if:

  • you believe that your concern was not satisfactorily resolved or addressed by the school
  • the matter is about the conduct of the principal.

If the matter is not about the conduct of the principal or a previous unsatisfactory resolution, the education regional office may refer it back to the school, unless there is a reason preventing the school from managing it.

Understand the complaints process

Parent and Visitor Parking

The new parking arrangements including the addition of the staff car park has greatly improved the expediency and safety of parking at Newborough PS. One issue that continues to cause problems is parental parking in the Karrinyup Sports Centre car park, especially when there are senior citizen sports events occurring.

The school has received a complaint regarding parents parking in the centre car park during our recent athletics carnival, also referring to when we have parent assemblies every second Friday morning.

We are fortunate to have this facility next to the school and for the most part it is well used and not a major issue.

To assist resolve this problem I will open up the access to Hazlitt Field for parent and visitor parking for major events such as the athletics carnival, concerts and assemblies. I would ask that parents park on Hazlitt Field rather than in the Karrinyup Sports Centre Car Park.

Please be reminded that the new staff car park is for staff only and those with an Acrod parking permit. The chain across the entry is locked shortly after school finishes and the exit locked when the Head Cleaner leaves at 6:00pm each evening.

Choir Sings in Crank Recording Studio for Telethon

What a privilege it was for 45 senior choir students to be invited by Telethon to record ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen at the Crank Recording Studio in Northbridge last Thursday after school. Mrs Snelson prepared and conducted the choir as they fine-tuned and sharpened their singing before recording the song. The choir performed brilliantly. I am sure this will be a real highlight for students and something to look forward to shortly during Telethon. Soon the choir will be filmed performing the same song at Forest Park.

Crank Studios has had many famous performers record there. Justin Bieber and our own Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse are featured on their wall. Gina and Guy will be performing at Newborough Primary School on Friday 10th December from 11:00-12:00 in the undercover area. This is the concert delayed by COVID. All families are welcome to come along.

Student Leaving Newborough for 2022 (Not current Year 6’s)

If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year, could you please let us know in the office by the 5th November 2021. This will assist us with planning for 2022. A further note in a later newsletter will seek information from parents regarding information that may assist with placement of students for 2022. Please don’t send any requests at this time.

New Telephone Number

The Department of Education has provided the school with a new VOIP telephone system which has meant that we needed a different telephone number. We experienced a few teething problems earlier this week with the Telstra changeover, however for the next few months, calls to our old phone number are being forwarded to the new number. We strongly suggest that parents make a note of the new number and start using it now, in case the old number is terminated earlier than anticipated.

No Dogs on School Grounds

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Matilda - Save The Date

Year 6 Enterprise Fete Thursday, 16 September, 2021

Join us on Thursday, 16 September for our Year 6 Enterprise Fete! The stalls in the quadrangle will be open to K-2 students from 2:15pm, Years 3-5 students from 2:30pm and the parent community from 2:45pm until 3:30pm. This is an authentic opportunity for our Year 6 students to showcase their learning in ‘Design and Technologies’ and ‘Economics and Business’ as well as to raise money for their end of year graduation celebrations. The students in this year level have been working hard to deliver motivating and appealing stalls. Come along and support this community event and please bring all your coins to take part in the fun! We ask that in line with the Department of Education’s protocols, that adults attending the fete model social distancing and appropriate hygiene practices.

2022 Bring Your Own Device

Next year the school will continue with its (BYOD) or Parent Owned Device (POD) program which has been endorsed by the School Board as an option for students from Years 4-6.

If you are to provide a device, the school requires the device to meet certain specifications, along with the student and parent signing the Student BYOD agreement.

The minimum standard device for Newborough will have the following:

  • Dual Core (2Ghz) Processor (minimum) ie Intel Celeron processor
  • 4Gb RAM
  • 2 USB ports
  • *Must be Windows 10 if running Microsoft Operating System
  • Dual Band Wireless. (preferred)
  • 128Gb SSD Hard Drive (preferred)
  • Software: Windows 10 comes with a built in Anitvirus (Windows Defender) Apple products may require an Antivirus installed. Microsoft Office 365 provided by the Department of Education.

Specifications that are not essential but are nice to have include:

  • Touch screen
  • Front and/or rear facing cameras
  • Stylus
  • Increased RAM, Hard Drive and/or improved processor ie Intel i3/i5/i7

We will continue our partnership with Stott and Hoare to provide a full service option to purchase a device or you are welcome to source your own device. Attached is a brochure from Stott & Hoare with the devices available for 2022. These devices are higher in cost than previous years as they have higher specs than previous years, making them a good solution for a long term device. Due to Covid it is harder to get computer processors into WA, Stott & Hoare have pre ordered a limited supply of devices to have for people wishing to order now. There is quite a long turnaround for devices if they have to be ordered. Please see the brochure for further information.

Through the Department of Education’s arrangement with Microsoft, students are provided with a suite of Microsoft Office 365 programs at no cost.

We would like to make it clear that bringing your own device is optional. While we can see the benefits of being able to bring your own device to school, we understand that there are also many factors that you will have to consider when deciding whether to provide a device or not. We would like to assure you that your child will not be disadvantaged if the decision is not to provide a device.

Sports News

Faction Athletics Carnival

Last Tuesday and Friday our students participated in our newly adopted tabloid athletics sports carnival. The students in all the events that they participated in demonstrated our Newborough values of Kindness, Respect, Team Work and Challenge Yourself, whilst they also demonstrated their athleticism and sportsmanship skills. It was fantastic to see so many parents, grandparents, family and friends supporting the students in their events and enjoying the carnival events over the two days.

I would like to sincerely thank all of the Newborough staff for their wonderful support and assistance to prepare the carnival, the training of the students for their events, along with the carnival set-up, jobs and pack away of the equipment. A big thank you to the P & C volunteers for providing a sausage sizzle lunch on the Thursday during the carnival week and the amazing Kindy parents who provided coffee/tea and delicious snacks for the Newborough community throughout the Friday carnival events from the ‘Kindy Café’. Newborough is so fortunate to have such a caring and helpful school community!

Interschool Athletics:

This year, Newborough Primary School will be travelling to Doubleview Primary School in Doubleview for the Interschool Athletics Carnival. The jumps, throws and 400m events will be held on Wednesday, the 15th September, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The main carnival will be held on Friday, 17th September from 10.00 – 2.30pm. If your child has been selected for any events for these carnival dates, their excursion and consent forms have been sent home at the beginning of the week.

Students selected for either the Wednesday, 15th September or Friday 18th September events, must make internet payment for the bus fare and return their permission forms to their classroom teacher by this Friday, 10th September to be eligible to attend.

Volunteers at the Carnival

As part of our involvement in the Interschool Athletics Carnival, we need to provide volunteers to assist with some allocated jobs on both days of the carnival program. Please refer to your child’s carnival paperwork to complete the pink form and return the form to your child’s classroom teacher by Monday 13 September if you are able to assist.

Year 4/5 Room 13 News

Kaya noonakoort, my name is Gemma McLean and I am so excited to be joining the Newborough Primary School family. It has been a busy three weeks since I first stepped into Room 13. The students have been very helpful while I’ve been learning the ropes and I have had a lot of fun getting to know each of our terrific 4/5’s.

Here are some highlights from recent weeks

Poetry

Poetry took us outside where we learnt some old school playground rhymes and sang them while we jumped rope and played elastics (Mrs McLean is secretly hoping to start a new fad).

PBW

In PBW we have started to make our mindfulness plates. Making Mindfulness plates helps us to relax, slowdown and enjoy the process of making something beautiful.

Digital technologies

We have been making our own digital systems (laptop computers) and peripheral devices (monitors, keyboards, printers) to help us sort input from output devices.

Mathematics

In mathematics, we have been improving our maths fluency and having fun at the same time. Mrs McLean has taught us some new card games including Flipper, Friends of 10 Fish and Place Value War.

Pre Faction Carnival Sausage Sizzle

Our Sausage Sizzle was a hit and class Canteen baskets were full to the brim with hotdogs – 175 of them!! A massive thank you goes to our wonderful volunteers Rhonda Yates, Will Walsh, Rina Radics, Bianca Birrell, Cath Mulligan, John De Leo, Trent Leach, Chris Toovey, Riti Gupta and Diya Martino for working as a well-oiled machine and making it a huge success. We also appreciate Rob Antonello’s assistance in rallying the Dads for the BBQ. Here are some photos of the team in action.

We would like to thank the management and excellent butchers at Stirling IGA Butchers for providing their fantastic sausages, made onsite, at a very reasonable price. Stirling IGA and their dedicated butcher shop provide much of the fresh food and meat products used in the Canteen and we appreciate their support.
