Principal’s Introduction

Welcome Back New Students and Staff

Welcome back for the start of Term 3. There is a lot to be excited about in Term 3 and the remainder of the year. We welcome several new families to the school and several changes to staff. Miss Callen Toner takes over Miss Danker’s Year Six class for the remainder of the year. Miss Danker is Acting Principal at Sorrento PS. Mrs Megan Saggers replaces Miss Katie Ahrens in Pre-Primary Room 4 whilst Miss Ahrens enjoys well-earned Long Service Leave till the end of the year. Mrs Kelly Hughes returns taking the Year Fours each Wednesday. Miss Shereen Sidhu, who did her final teaching practice at NPS, has earned a contract to backfill for Mrs Saggers in Mrs Farmers Year Three classroom on Thursday and Fridays. We are excited to have our Phys. Ed. Teacher Mrs Williams commence her return to work following a serious knee injury. This is a gradual return with lesson loads increasing with the ongoing support of Mrs Coleen Dayman who has been magnificent taking classes this year and supporting Mrs Williams. We also look forward to the return of Mr Blanch shortly.

This term we have three final School Experience 4 Practice Teachers with Miss Sophie Arndt in Miss Watson’s Year Three class, Miss Emily Hains in Miss Phillips’ Year Six class and Miss Bianca Abbonizio in Mrs Tennant’s Year One class.

We haven’t had much luck running the Cross Country Carnival this year. The weather and COVID restrictions have all been against us. Fortunately, the Interschool carnival has been postponed for a period with Butlers Reserve affected by the recent heavy rains. We may have to squeeze the running of our own carnival into short, good weather bursts over the next two weeks. Let’s hope we have more luck with the Athletics season coming up.

The school is working with Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse to reschedule Gina’s concert that had to be postponed with the COVID restrictions during NAIDOC Week at the end of last term. Stay tuned. It was a shame we weren’t able to have the concert and follow up with special morning tea with Gina and parents.

The bonus for students was that the Indigenous foods kindly supplied by NGALA, Parenting Connections W.A. were distributed to students who wanted to have a taste. There were mini Pork and Sage Apple Sausage Rolls with Bush Tomato Sauce and Platter of Desert Lime Cheesecake Tartlets were a real hit.

Mrs Snelson will shortly be conducting auditions for the play Matilda. The Choir have also been invited to sing at several Telethon events and feature on television during Telethon. What a fantastic achievement!

COVID Lockdown Preparedness

The Department of Education (DoE) has alerted schools to the possibility that WA may enter lockdown and schools move to home-schooling should the current crisis in NSW and parts of the eastern seaboard extend to WA. Our school is well prepared for such a situation as occurred last year. Mr Stenhouse is preparing to extend access to the DoE and school’s main delivery platform called Connect to all students and families. Much of the DoE material is supported on Connect. For families who do not have internet access we will put together work packages for students. Fingers crossed WA stays safe and we can continue with schooling at school.

New Board Member

With Miss Danker, staff Board member, leaving the school this semester her place has been taken by Miss Justine Watson for the remainder of her term at the end of 2023. Congratulations Miss Watson, you join this very active and important team.

This week we also found out that our external School Review will take place on the second last week of term Four on Wednesday 8th December. The School Board, staff, P&C and School containers’ members will form an important validation of our school’s progress. It is rather late in the year, however, a great time for us to shine!

Sustainability: Tree Planting and Kitchen Gardens

This week we celebrate National Tree Day with every student in the school involved in planting trees, shrubs and ground covers in select locations around the school on either Friday 30th July or Monday 2nd August. Students will also have a Mindfulness activity and specially designed lesson for each year level to learn about the importance of trees and plants.

We will plant nearly 120 plants in the Nature Playground, Japanese classroom, behind the Pre-Primary, near the new car park and in the Kindy. The school has been fortunate to have great support from the City of Stirling who have provided many of the plants and lesson support, Scarboro Toyota and partner Planet Ark who have donated gloves, shirts, stakes, trowels and much more. Bunnings who also provided plants, fertilizer, stakes and tree guards.

Our three Sustainability leaders Rosie G, Neve C and Sally J have written letters seeking sponsorship and helped prepare for the planting. With nearly $450 raised from the collection of containers that is 4500 10 cent containers not going to landfill (Great job Newborough). Further purchases have been made such as a post hole digger and more plants.

The schedule below is of course subject to weather. We will try to plant even if the weather is inclement as the new plants will love the watering in. If you wish to join your child’s class please check in with their teacher.

The other really exciting news on the Sustainability front is that our school has been successful obtaining a grant of $5000 as part of a new partnership with Coles Karrinyup and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gardens Foundation. The money will pay for refurbishment of the tiring vegie patch railway sleepers and top up the soil as well as purchasing several portable pizza ovens. What a way to engage students making their own pizzas with the help of produce from our gardens.

The partnership with Coles and SASKG will be recognised at the official opening of the new Coles Karrinyup store this Thursday morning and presentation of a large cheque.

Don’t forget to bring in the Containers for Change (Must say 10 Cent container on the label) each Tuesday and Thursday mornings before school. You can of course take the containers to the depot and provide the school Identification Code C10245611 and funds go directly to the Sustainability account. The school also recycles batteries small Green bin next to the Year six classroom entrance, food waste to the worm farm and paper from classrooms and the office.

Facilities Survey (Still time to respond)

Newborough Primary School values the feedback from students, staff, parents/carers and school community members about the school's buildings and grounds facilities. The purpose of this survey is to gauge the school community’s ideas and thoughts on current facilities and to be able to plan and advocate for improvements to meet the current (Short Term) and future (Long Term) needs of the school aligned to Our Vision, Our Purpose and Values (Business Plan 2021-2024).

The information gathered will be analysed by the School Board's 'Facilities Sub Committee and added to the information already available to the school. The Committee will prioritise and make recommendations to the Board and Principal for future improvements.

Has been sent home to all parents via email. You can also access the survey from the link below or QR code.. The Facilities Committee have not set a closing date. The committee will meet early in term three to discuss and analyse results so if you can complete this by the start of term three that would be much appreciated.

Book Week - Week 6: Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds 21-27th August

To celebrate Book Week last year in 2020, we booked a fun Book Week incursion to perform in Term 3 to our Pre-primary to Year 6 students. However, due to COVID last year, this was cancelled.

We are fortunate to be able to give students the opportunity to watch a live Book Week performance called ‘Better, Brighter, Bigger’ by the company Perform Education.

A note went home at the beginning of the week with the cost of the incursion. This is $6.75 each and is due by Wednesday 25th August please. Unfortunately, without payment, students cannot attend the performance.

BIGGER, BETTER, BRIGHTER!

One day a girl named Marley woke up to discover that ‘Something’ was missing…

And so begins a quest that will lead Marley through destinations that are strange and challenging but often oddly familiar. However, first she must determine what it is that has disappeared from her life that is causing such a sense of emptiness.

Fortunately, her story has a narrator to help her. The thing is Marley sometimes has her own ideas as to how the story needs to be told. There are books around to provide clues and directions which is a great help –if you can figure out what they mean. Marley is determined to sort it out no matter where she travels or what she encounters.

One thing is certain - once the ‘Something’ is recovered, everything will become Bigger, Better, Brighter!

Join Marley and characters from a selection of The CBCA 2021 Shortlisted Books, as she seeks to discover what it is that is missing and how best to recover it.

Celebrating the CBCA Book Week 2021 theme: OLD WORLDS, NEW WORLDS, OTHER WORLDS, this interactive and educational musical adventure is a fun filled and energetic celebration of CBCA Book Week 2021, and brings together all the elements of great storytelling - a hero, a mystery, a quest, and an exploration!

Cross Country and Interschool Cross Country 2021

Thank you to all parents and guardians for your support with the constant changes to the dates of the Faction Cross Country and Interschool Cross Country.

At this stage, the new Interschool Cross Country date for Year 3-6 students is Friday 13th August (Week 4).

At this stage, we have not yet nominated a date for the faction Cross Country event although intent to hold it in Week 3 of this term, weather permitting!

Change to Maths Program for 2022

Newborough Primary School will be introducing a new Maths Program into the school from Pre-Primary to Year 6 in 2022. This is because the current program being used to support our explicit direct instruction of the Western Australian Mathematics Curriculum in Years 4-6, Envision, is no longer being produced.

Over the past two years, our school has research the program we believe best supports our pedagogy in Mathematics and we will now be implementing the OXFORD Maths program next year.

Staff have begun accessing professional learning on the program and the Student Workbooks will be on this year’s booklist that will be sent home in Term 4.

Parent Workshop

We will run a Parent Workshop on the OXFORD Maths program also in Term 4 on Tuesday 2nd November from 1.30-2.30pm in the library for parents who are interested in understanding the program we will be using. I will send out information closer to the time in regards to the session.

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

2021 Student Diaries Available

We have a limited number of student diaries available from our school office for $10. If you would like a school diary, please make payment via direct deposit (see details below). Please email proof of payment to newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au. Once payment has cleared we will deliver to your child’s teacher.
