Principal’s Introduction

Semester One Thank You Happy Holidays

Not too long to go and everyone can have a well-earned Semester break as we celebrate many achievements during terms one and two and prepare for the second half of the year. This term has been particularly difficult given the number of staff we have had on various entitled leave. There is a system wide shortage of Relief Teachers and Relief Education Assistants making it difficult to find replacements. Thank you to our loyal and hard-working relief staff who have been very obliging and helpful. Thank you parents and the school community for your understanding and support.

The year commenced a week later than planned with the COVID lockdown. This cramped an already shortened term as classes settled into the routines and learning. So many activities that were cancelled or postponed last year went ahead. This included Parent Information Nights, Year 6 Leadership Conference, Relaunch of the Newbros (Fathering Project), Year 6 Camp, Faction and Interschool Swimming Carnivals, Harmony Day, Easter Raffle, Choir at the Telethon Breakfast, the Colour Run, NAPLAN testing for Years 3 & 5, YogaZoo, full class assemblies, Round Table Lunches (Years 3, 4 &5), Ocean Net Conference for staff, Winter Sports, and much more.

Congratulations to Miss Ella Fletcher, Ms Murray’s Year 2 class and Mr Thomas Scoulidis who will shortly complete their third School Experience practice very successfully. We have some terrific young teachers coming through.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for a most successful semester and wish you a very safe, restful and enjoyable holiday. We have so much to look forward to when school resumes for students on Tuesday 20th July. (Staff have a School Development Day on Monday 19th July)

COVID Update

Last weekend the Premier announced that Western Australia will now enter Phase 5 for the COVID Response in August, slightly delayed after recent COVID outbreaks in NSW and Victoria. This means that the 2 square metre rule will be relaxed and surface cleaning return to regular routines. The Health Department recommend that physical distancing of 1.5 metres between adults should be maintained, where possible.

P&C Day

The first Friday of Term 3, 23rd July is P&C Day. Newborough PS is very fortunate to have such a vibrant and supportive P&C who make our school an exceptional place for students to learn, teachers and staff to teach and for everyone to engage a local community. The staff and I sincerely thank all members of the P&C for all the great work and support you provide the school. You are truly amazing. The P&C have a wonderful leadership committee with Wes Gregory as President, Carly Fowkes as Secretary, Jacob Martin as Treasurer and the Executive Team Jackie Stott, Rebecca Brown, Laurie McCullum and Chenoa Walsh.

I encourage all parents and community members to get behind our P&C. There is such a broad range of activities and areas you can help with. It doesn’t mean you need to attend all the meetings or be involved in everything. Many hands make light work and of course there is a great deal of belonging and pleasure helping out.

The P&C also support many projects including the Canteen, Uniform Shop, Booklist, Bookclub, Matilda the Musical, Year 6 Graduation and camp, Mathletics, Home Readers, Music Marimbas, welcome morning teas and end of year celebration, school discos, Easter Raffle, Shade Sales, Parent Class Representatives, Entertainment Book and big item for 2021 the refurbishment of the Nature Playground.

It’s really hard to imagine what our school would be like without our wonderful P&C.

Facilities Survey

Newborough Primary School values the feedback from students, staff, parents/carers and school community members about the school's buildings and grounds facilities. The purpose of this survey is to gauge the school community’s ideas and thoughts on current facilities and to be able to plan and advocate for improvements to meet the current (Short Term) and future (Long Term) needs of the school aligned to Our Vision, Our Purpose and Values (Business Plan 2021-2024).

The information gathered will be analysed by the School Board's 'Facilities Sub Committee and added to the information already available to the school. The Committee will prioritise and make recommendations to the Board and Principal for future improvements.

A link will be sent home to all parents via email. You can also access the survey from the link below or QR code.. The Facilities Committee have not set a closing date. The committee will meet early in term three to discuss and analyse results so if you can complete this by the start of term three that would be much appreciated.

Teachers will issue reports to parents and guardians on, Monday 28th June. Take the time to carefully read the instructions to help with interpretation of grades. Please make contact with your child’s teacher if you wish to have an interview or clarify aspects of the report. Please ensure that you save your child’s report for future reference.

UPCOMING CHOIR PERFORMANCE – Friday 2 July 2021

The Years 4-6 Performance Choir will be performing at Room 14’s NAIDOC Assembly on Friday 2nd July 2021 in the undercover area.

Indigenous songwriter Archie Roach composed ‘The Colour of Your Jumper’ in 1993. The song was inspired by AFL legend Nicky Winmar, a young West Australian, who is proud of his heritage and people, and who made it as an elite sportsman.

His statue stands proudly outside OPTUS stadium. The message is strong – be proud and true to who you are and what you can achieve.
