Principal’s Introduction

Year Five Round Table – Kids Speak

In the last newsletter I reported on the Year Four Round Table luncheon. One of the ideas put forward was to open the Library at lunchtime. This is now happening with Mr Stenhouse, Miss Deb and Mr Worthy opening the Library three times a week for students to read, colour in and play board games. The first opening had 47 students.

The latest Round Table was chaired by Owen Mc with Year Five students Campbell, Caoimhe, Paul and Taya. Miss Deb, our Chaplain joined in helping take notes and see what we do.

The Year Fives really like:

  • The Nature Playground so you can build things
  • The new Nature Playground plan, especially the rope swing.
  • The mini garden – Vegie Patch
  • The year six enterprise fete
  • Having lots of student leadership roles
  • The four school values, posters and artworks.
  • The new flag poles and the Aboriginal flags for Reconciliation Week.
  • Making friends – Our school is a safe place.
  • The P&C who did the Colour Run and parents who help our classes
  • Teachers have a sense of humour and make learning fun.

The Our school could be better if:

  • Make recess and lunchtime longer
  • Better hand dryers in the toilets
  • Better quality toilet paper. It’s too thin (Good news. We’ve changed the new order to extra thick!!)
  • Bring out the tennis nets.
  • Upgrade the canteen area with better lighting

All these thoughts and ideas go back to the Student Leadership team and Admin for further consideration.

Our next Round Table is with the Year Three’s on Thursday 10th June.

Staffing Update

In the previous newsletter I outlined several changes to staffing for next semester. In a further update I can now announce that Miss Danker, Year Six Room 15, has been appointed Acting Deputy Principal at Sorrento Primary School for Semester Two. Miss Callen Toner will be taking over the class from the start of next term. Miss Danker and Miss Toner are working closely on the transition to ensure a smooth handover. We wish Miss Danker all the very best in this new role, something she aspires to head towards in the future.

Car Park Bollards and Chain

The contractor has completed the installation of the bollards and chains across the entry and exit of the new Staff Car Park. These will be opened at 6:00am when our Head Cleaner, Mr Markoub arrives for work in the morning. Both Exit and Entry chains will be locked when Mr Markoub finishes his afternoon shift at 6:00pm.

Anyone requiring access to the Disability Bay, for your convenience it is located with in our Staff Car Park.

For the safety of students, visitors and staff please comply with the signage. ‘No Kiss and Drop’ will be added shortly. We have received several complaints that some visitors are using the Exit to sneak in and park and using the car park as a to pick up or drop students. This is very dangerous.

Makuru – Six Noongar Seasons Cold and wet time of the year (fertility season) June - July

Makaru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year come into full swing. Traditionally, this was a good time of the year to move back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing the cold weather, rains and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.

As the waterways and catchments started to fill, people were able to move about their country with ease and thus their food sources changed from sea, estuarine and lake foods to those of the lands in particular the grazing animals such as the kangaroo. As well as a food source, animals provided people with many other things. For example, 'Yongar' or kangaroos not only provided meat but also 'bookas' (animal skin cloaks that were used as the nights became much cooler). Nothing was left; even the bones and sinews were used in the manufacturing of bookas and for hunting tools such as spears.

Makuru is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season. If you look carefully, you might now see pairs of 'Wardongs' (ravens) flying together. You also notice these pairs not making the usual 'ark ark arrrrrk' that these birds are well known for when flying solo. Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of the Black Swan or 'Mali' as they too prepare to nest and breed.

Flowers that will start to emerge include the blues and purples of the Blueberry Lilly (Dianella revoluta) and the Purple Flags (Patersonia occidentalis). As the season comes to a close, you should also start to notice the white flowers of the weeping peppermint (Agonis flexuosa) as the blues start to make way for the white and cream flowers of Djilba.

Ripper Reader

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Parents and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time. Please email Ms Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7.

Thank you to the parents and grandparents who have already given their time to help the Canteen so far this year. We are encouraging volunteers via the Parent Reps. Please keep an eye out from your Parent Rep advising of your classroom’s turn.

Even if it’s not your classroom’s turn to assist, we are always happy for any time you can spare. Below is a link to the Volunteer Roster. Although a busy environment, it’s a supportive and friendly one. If you’re thinking of volunteering and have any questions, please feel free to pop in Monday/Wednesday/Friday or e-mail me at newborough.canteen.manager1@gmail.com.
