Principal’s Introduction

Colour Run

Congratulations Newborough. The P&C Colour Run held on Saturday 15th May was an absolutely fantastic event for our school. It was tremendous fun bringing the community together. Our timing could not have been better with the lifting of COVID lockdown restrictions just a week prior. Well maybe the day could have been a bit warmer but I don’t think the participants minded too much. Whilst we still need to be cautious this was the first real Newborough PS event for nearly a year and a half that we could all attend. I know the P&C will do a write up later in the newsletter with announcements for funds raised and extra titbits, however there are some people who deserve special recognition. The event highlighted the wonderful organisation particularly from Bec Gregory and Carly Fowkes who worked solidly for weeks. They were able to muster a great team of parent and staff helpers who made the day so memorable. It was great to have so many staff come along, some got right into it, with others just to cheer everyone along. Special thanks to our Master of Ceremonies, Mark Blatchford and the effervescent Andrew Winton who entertained us with his sensational music and wit. The pictures paint a thousand colourful words. Thank you to Allen Pyrah from ASP Photography.

Year Four Round Table

Each year our student leaders lead a forum for each year level from Pre-Primary to Year Six to share student’s thoughts and ideas about the school. It is a great way for our leaders to engage with fellow students and develop their leadership skills. It is also a great opportunity for me to hear student voice and share ideas. The latest Round Table was chaired by Harry Gregory with Year Four students Indigo, Noah, Cayden and Sophie. Miss Deb, our new Chaplain joined in helping take notes and see what we do.

The Year Fours really like:

  • The Nature playground, lots of activities to do and lots of sport areas
  • Using games to learn in class
  • The school values, Goldies, Class Passes and Golden time for doing the right things at school
  • Feeling safe because of the school behaviour, protective fence and the new shelter for the Year Sixes students and parents to use. There is always someone ther to help and make you feel good
  • The Library is nice, peaceful and relaxing

Our school could be better if:

  • The Library was open for some lunchtimes
  • Paint murals behind the Junior toilet area and Senior student toilets (Like the Junior toilets have already). There was also an idea to grow a virtual painted mural tree with a leaf for each student and staff that can be added to each year

The Year Fours were concerned that some students are too rough on the flying fox and they would like to have a sleep over at school in Year Five so they get used to being away from home ready for the Year Six camp.

All these thoughts and ideas go back to the Student Leadership team and Admin for further consideration.

Our next Round Table is with the Year Fives on Thursday 27th May.

Cyber Safety and Protective Behaviours

Last Wednesday our school hosted a parent and staff session on Cyber Safety. The workshop was facilitated by Katie Vos from Child Safety Services. We gratefully thank Mrs Natalie Alach for sourcing funding from NGALA and Department of Communities and organising the evening. There were 31 attendees. A great response from our school community, especially after the big Colour Run commitments on the previous weekend. The target audience was for parents with a focus on what can be done at home. The partnership between home and school is so important for the safety and wellbeing of our students. This session was very informative and provided a great deal of background information, access to resources and useful strategies. Cyber Safety is very real and highly relevant for our students and families as the digital world rapidly increases and our reliance grows on social media and the connectivity of electronic devices. One of the keys messages is that we need to keep up to date with what is happening and be in control of the information received and most importantly the information we divulge. It is frightening to realise that any information we put out can be used and very quickly, often without our realising it. I commend to you two websites that are worth looking at and bookmarking.

Staffing Update

Commencing at the start of Semester Two there will be several staff changes in classrooms.

Miss Katie Ahren’s will be taking long service leave for Semester Two. Mrs Saggers, a very experienced Pre-primary teacher, will be full time teacher with the Room 4 Pre-Primaries.

Mrs Lori Beatty, Pre-primary Room 3 has opted to work four days a week Monday to Thursday from Week Two next semester to use her available long service leave. Her replacement for Friday’s is Mrs Kara Varcoe who was Kindy DOTT teacher last year and knows the children in Room 3 very well and is looking forward to this appointment.

As Mrs Saggers moves to her now full-time position in the Pre-primary she will be replaced in Mrs Farmer’s Year 3 class by Miss Shereen Sidhu on Thursday and Fridays. Miss Sidhu has done lots of teacher relief and successfully completed her final teacher School Experience in Miss Kos’ Year Four classes two years ago.

Mr Freeman’s class will welcome back Mrs Kelly Hughes each Wednesday as she returns from parenting leave.

We wish all our staff taking well-earned leave an enjoyable, energising break. To staff taking on new roles we thank you and wish you every success.

Reconciliation Week

This year National Reconciliation Week is celebrating 20 years of recognition and action. Officially the dates are from Thursday 27th May to Wednesday 3rd June. Newborough’s our main Reconciliation focus will be combined with NAIDOC Week at the end of Term Two with a concert by former student Gina William’s and her singing partner Guy Ghouse for students, parents and staff. This will be promoted further as we get closer and is on Wednesday 30th June from 11:00-12:00. Gina is a proud Noongar woman who writes and performs in Noongar language. Her beautiful songs include the Kalyakoorl and Boorda songs featured on You Tube and Ted Ex. Kalyakoorl and Boorda | Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse | TEDxPerth - Bing video .

The Library has an excellent display of books and resources on display and classes may do some of their own activities.

Pre-Primary Room 4

On Wednesday, students from Room 4 participated in the National Simultaneous Story time. Every year, schools, early learning centres and libraries across Australia read the same book at the same time to promote reading, picture books and Australian authors. This year’s story “Get Me Some Space” by Philip Bunting was read from the International Space Station by NASA Astronaut Shannon Walker. Students also got to “meet” the author as well, and had a try at drawing their own rocket.

Ripper Reader

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Parents and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time. Please email Ms Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7.

P&C News

Nature Play Redevelopment

We hope you were able to have a look at the proposed Nature Playground designs completed by Nature Based Play that were on display at the Colour Run on Saturday 15th. The P&C has been working with Nature Based Play to come up with a design that will not only be engaging, fun, challenging and meet the developmental needs of our students but one that will also be long lasting and low maintenance (cost) in the future. The initial feedback has been great and we think the design is pretty impressive so far. The students have had great fun placing their coloured dots on the play items that they would most like to see in the final design.

The P&C welcomes any and all feedback from parents. The designs are currently on display in the library and will be on the soft fall area for viewing at the next assembly also. Parents can feedback by way of writing on the post-it notes available with the display and placing in the feedback jar, emailing the P&C via newboroughpcsec@gmail.com or in person at the next P&C meeting scheduled for week 8, Wednesday 9th June at 7pm in the library.

The P&C meeting being held in week 8 will be the end of the feedback/consultation period with parents. Following that Nature Based Play will be instructed to make any changes and develop the final design to be submitted for the tendering process. The current design is estimated to cost $115,000 to completion. This may of course change following the feedback period and evaluation of funds available once Colour Run donations and contributions from Stuart Aubrey are all finalised.

If you have any questions, input, concerns or feedback then now is the time, so please come along to the meeting to discuss or may you forever hold your peace!
