Principal’s Introduction
Djeran -
Ant season (season of the adulthood) April – May
Have you noticed the many banksia trees flowering at the moment and lots of little ants scurrying around finding (Makaru) winter food? Certainly the days are shorter, the nights cooler and dew on the ground each morning. At school Mr Worthy says it’s the silly season when students wear their jumpers to school and by recess time discard them, hopefully in their schoolbags. Most do!
Djeran season at last sees a break in the really hot weather. A key indicator of the change of season is the cool nights that once again bring a dewy presence for us to discover in the early mornings.
The winds have also changed, especially in their intensity, with light breezes being the go and generally swinging from southerly directions (i.e. south east to south west). Many flying ants can be seen cruising around in the light winds.
Djeran is a time of red flowers especially from the Red Flowering Gum (Corimbia ficifolia), as well as the smaller and more petite flowers of the Summer Flame (Beaufortia aestiva). As you travel around the Perth area, you may also notice the red 'rust' and seed cones forming on the male and female Sheoaks (Allocasuarina fraseriana). Banksias start to display their flowers, ensuring that there are nectar food sources for the many small mammals and birds that rely upon them.
Traditionally, foods at this time of year included the seeds that had been collected and stored for treatment from the Zamia last season along with the root bulbs of the Yanget (Bullrushes), fresh water fish, frogs and turtles.
As the season progresses, the nights will become cooler and damper along with some cool and rainy days which also means that traditionally mia mias (houses or shelters) were now repaired and updated to make sure they were waterproofed and facing in the right direction in readiness for the deep wintery months to come.
Newborough PS Business Plan 2021-2024
The School Board and Staff are pleased to present the school’s new Business Plan 2021-2024. This plan has a three prong focus to
- Empower Successful Learners
- Enhance Collaborative Staff
- Enrich Strong Community.
The plan is the result of extensive feedback, research and links to previous Business Plans and the Department of Education’s Strategic planning. Congratulations to all involved, especially Miss Tucknott, for this excellent roadmap for our school. Hard copies are being printed professionally with photos and should be available from the front office shortly.
“Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to. Respect is earned, not given ”
RESPECT

Deputy News
Reporting to Parents:
Towards the end of the term, parents will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades.
Components of written reports
At Newborough Primary School, we follow the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Policy Guidelines set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for the accurate reporting of the Western Australian Curriculum. In turn, we have developed our own Curriculum, Assessing and Reporting Policy which can be found on our website.
In the policy, it will outline some of the components of the written report which states that all schools are to provide plain language reports to parents/carers at the end of each semester which:
(a) are readily understandable to those responsible for
the student
(b) give an accurate and objective assessment of the student's progress
and achievement
(c) include an assessment of the student's achievement in terms of the
Western Australian achievement standards
(d) include, for subjects studied, an assessment of the student's
achievement:
(i) in terms of the grades A, B, C, D and E (or an equivalent five-point
scale/achievement descriptor), clearly defined in terms of Western
Australian achievement standards, and
(ii)in relation to the performance of the student's peer group.
(e)include information about the student's attitude, behaviour and
effort in terms other than the five-point scale which is used as a measure
of achievement
(f) include any additional information the school considers relevant,
including an overall teacher comment.
In addition, for Pre-primary to Year 2, school reports are to include a description of the student's progress in personal and social learning.
Mid-year reporting – Some important information!
The achievement standards articulated in the Outline describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, in mid-year reports, teachers make a professional judgment regarding the level of achievement that the student is demonstrating relative to the achievement standard, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Thus, students demonstrating excellent achievement at that point in time are allocated an ‘A’ grade or ‘Excellent’ achievement, and students demonstrating satisfactory achievement are allocated a ‘C’ grade or ‘Satisfactory’ achievement.
The grades allocated mid-year are based on the curriculum taught in the child’s current year level. While this seems obvious, it is important to note that as your child progresses throughout their schooling, the curriculum, content and skills are hierarchal and harder. Just because your child achieved an ‘A’ or ‘Excellent’ achievement in the previous year, this does not mean that your child may demonstrate the same level of achievement the next year. Many students do find some concepts more difficult to grasp than others and this may also impact on their achievement grades fluctuating between different years and indeed between the Semester One Mid-year report and the Semester Two end of year report.
If your child has scored a lower achievement grade on their report than you have expected, then this will mean that your child has not demonstrated enough evidence to achieve that higher grade and this may be based on a variety of reasons such as not understanding the concepts properly, missing concepts or understandings or not assimilating to the harder work or expectations in their new year level. It may also be because they have not completed enough work to maintain a higher grade or because of absences during the term that have affected the grade. A discussion with the class teacher may help to work out the reasons why this may be.
Please do not be concerned if your child receives a ‘C’ grade allocation or a Satisfactory allocation. According to the Western Australian Curriculum, a Satisfactory achievement means that your child is achieving where they are expected to for that year level and therefore meeting the Achievement Standards. This is good news!
Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade allocation or Limited or ‘E’ grade or Very Low and discuss an Individual Education Plan, SEN Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or a SEN or modified report for your child, if this is needed.
Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2021
Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Monday 28th June 2021. (Week 11, Term 2)
The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:
- timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
- administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
- an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
- parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.
To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.
We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.
Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.
Ripper Reader
The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Parents and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.
If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time. Please email Ms Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7.

Colour Explosion Fun Run
Saturday 15th May
The Colour Explosion Fun Run is all set to go ahead on Saturday 15th May!
In order to make this event possible we are still seeking volunteers for small tasks on the day. This may include, setting up the obstacles from 10am, throwing coloured powder, supervising obstacles as the kids run past, and assisting with tidy up (a great one for those with younger kids who want to keep an eye on them during the run, as you can assist while they have a play with their friends afterwards!).
Please click the button below to pop your name on the volunteer sheet, massive events like this can’t happen without lots of help. And the kids love it, so let’s all help to make it a success for them

Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I need to register?
Yes! Every child participating will need to register for the event on the day - Registration will be in the undercover area between 1pm - 1:20pm.

Can my sibling join in?
Yes! Older siblings no longer at the school and close family such as cousins are welcome to participate, however they must also register on the day and pay an entry fee of $10.
When is kick-off?
The event is planned to start at 1:30 pm - children will assemble in the quadrangle, they will start in waves in their year levels (parents are welcome to run alongside younger students).
How many times do you do the course?
You are welcome to go around the course as many times as you like. It is not a race to run, so go around as many times as you like and enjoy!
Will I get wet?
Yes! There will be water, foam, water guns etc so expect to get wet and colourful! Bring a change of clothes as it might get cool later.
Do I have to do every obstacle?
Not at all! Do what you and your child are happy to do. The only aim of the day is to have fun.
Is there a chance the Colour Run could be postponed?
Hopefully Not! The Colour Run will only be postponed due to bad weather of if WA COVID-19 restrictions are tightened. Should the event have to be postponed you will be notified by the school and the P&C.
When does the event finish?
Approx 5pm - Following the run all families are invited to stay for a picnic near the quad. There will be entertainment to enjoy by our resident muso Andrew Winton.
Sadly, this will be Andrew’s final hoorah here at Newborough. After many years of amazing support and volunteering by both Andrew and Karen, their time at Newborough is drawing to a close. Here’s hoping the leather pants make one more appearance too!
What do I need to bring?
An ice cream truck will be available on the day for ice creams and cold drinks. Please bring all other refreshments and food you require. Don’t forget to wear a white shirt, colour always looks better on white! Throw in a spare change of clothes as it might get chilly after the event if wet
Raise the Funds
As you may know, the P&C have planned to re-develop the Nature Playground this year. This will be funded with money raised through previous fundraisers, and we are hoping that Stuart Aubrey comes through on his election promise! However, one last huge push from the whole Newborough community will allow us to expand our budget and make the Nature Playground great.
So please ensure you make each child a profile page (use the button below to take you there). You can easily send the link to all your family (near and far), friends and work colleagues. Don’t forget any neighbours or local community groups who may also use our Nature Play outside school hours, it will benefit them too. So hit them up!
