Principal’s Introduction

Welcome Back for Term Two

It has been a whirlwind start to Term Two given the ANZAC Long Weekend and COVID lockdown. Thank you to everyone for following the COVID restrictions supporting our school as an important and safe place for students, parents, staff and visitors. Classes have settled in quickly with our focus firmly on ‘heads down, tails up’ supporting learning in the classroom.

Welcome to our new Chaplain, Miss Deborah Jones. Miss Deb, as she likes to be called, will be with us each Thursday and Friday and has written a piece for the newsletter introducing herself.

Congratulations to Mr Moneer Markoub who is now officially permanent ‘Cleaner in Charge.’ I am sure, like me, you have noticed the fantastic dedication and hard work Moneer puts in around the school. He is very proactive and extremely diligent with the quality of cleaning and keeping the school in shape.

This term we also have three School Experience Teachers from Notre Dame who are settling in well. They are: Mr Thomas (Tom) Scoulidis in Miss Kos’s Year 5 class, Miss Ella Fletcher in Ms Murray’s Year 2 class and Mr Patrick Whitely in Miss Dankers Year 6 class.

Also joining us in Mrs Beatty’s class we have Mr Anotonino (Nino) D’Ettorre for the next five Fridays and then a four week block. Welcome Nino.

Containers for Change

Don’t forget our Sustainability Leaders Sally and Rosie will be near the school trailer each Tuesday and Thursday morning before school to collect and sort 10 cent containers to take to the recycle depot. If you wish to take them to one of the recycle depots our Container Deposit Scheme Id is C10245611. So far this year we have saved 1230 containers from landfill making $123 towards trees and shrubs we will plant on National Tree Day early next term.

Cyber Safety Workshop for Parents/Carers and Staff

We have been very fortunate that our School is to host a Cyber Safety workshop for parents, Carers and for Staff that is being facilitated by NGALA and sponsored and run by the WA Child Safety Services and Department of Communities. Mrs Natalie Alach, parent of Aiden and Sienna has arranged the program. The workshop will be held at school in the evening of Wednesday 19th May from 6:00-8:30pm in the Library. It is free. You will need to book so the organisers know how many people to prepare for. Bookings are online at:

https://www.ngala.com.au/session/cyber-safety-2/

Please note that when you book online it will ask how many children you are bringing. The answer is NO as this is a workshop for parents/carers and staff only.

Chaplain Miss Deborah Jones

Greetings Newborough PS Community! I am so excited to be joining you in the role as school Chaplain. I have been a school Chaplain now for six years and enjoy working with teachers, students and caregivers. My role is to support you by listening, making referrals and supporting the teachers in educating your students. Nothing is in the too hard basket for us to tackle together. I have two children of my own. Jorja 14, who is home-schooled and Jaxon 17, finishing year 12.

I love all music, learning about cultures, singing, writing and spending time in the bush.

I look forward to getting to know you all and becoming part of your community. I am available Thursdays and Fridays 8am to 4pm.

Miss Deborah Jones
Chaplain

ANZAC Service

Last Friday the school hosted a very meaningful ANZAC Service at which Mr Vince Connelly, MLA for Stirling was our keynote speaker. Mr Connelly reinforced the need for volunteering and service to community. He recognised the school’s and Australian Army’s similar values and how important these are in leading purposeful lives. He stated that these values are what all those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces would wish. Our student Leaders showed tremendous poise and dignity as they led the service. Special VIP guests, including Mr Connelly, Mr Callan Rose (Board Chair), Mrs Liza Harvey (School Patron, Mr Wes Gregory (P&C President and Mr Stuart Aubrey (MLA Scarborough) joined Student Leaders and representatives from each class laying wreathes at the foot of the Australian flagpole and Aboriginal and Western Australian flags. The choir, directed by Mrs Snelson, sang beautifully with the National Anthem and Shackleton song really complimenting the significance of the service. Click on the link to see and hear our magnificent choir.

Newborough PS Annual Report 2020

Please find attached to this newsletter Newborough’s Annual Report for 2020. Last year the school was not required to produce an annual report due to COVID. The 2020 Annual Report captures the school’s direction and achievements over the last two years. Paper copies are also available from the stand in the front office.

Levi’s Flying High

Congratulations to Levi Cook, Year 5 Mr Blanch’s class, who has won a prestigious position in the “Come fly with Me” pilot program at Melville SHS starting shortly in May every Monday morning. Levi’s extremely proud of himself as only 43 primary students were picked from across the whole state to do this program, based on their aeronautics and aircraft knowledge. Great work Levi.

New Car Park

Our new car park is open for business. Staff are using this facility freeing street parking and access to the school for parents and visitors. There is a purpose built Disability Bay for use by anyone with an ACROD sticker and appropriate registration. During the next few weeks there will be further signage, landscaping, reticulation works and clean up.

COVID-19 and Sick Students

We are still amid the pandemic response and the risks are ever present, as witnessed by the recent unexpected outbreaks in South Australia. This means we continue to stick strongly to the health recommendations for social distancing, particularly for adults. Here at school, we actively promote washing hands, cleaning with disinfectant, staying home if unwell and sneezing/coughing into the crux of the elbow. Please do NOT send your child/ren to school if they are exhibiting any cold-like symptoms. The restrictions for social distancing of students has been relaxed by the Department of Education on advice from the Health Department for schools. We still apply distancing as much as practical in the classroom and playgrounds.

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

YOGAZOO

Yogazoo! It may sound familiar to you! This is the Yoga Program we organised in 2020 for Term 2 that was cancelled due to COVID-19. We have rebooked this program for Term 2 this year as part of our Wellbeing program.

Newborough Primary School has always had a major focus on the pastoral care of our students. For the last three years we have been involved in a well-being journey to complement our Positive Behaviour in Schools program which focusses on the positive behaviours of Respect, Team Work, Kindness and Challenge Yourself. This year we are continuing to implement the Smiling Minds program and Yogazoo in Schools program. These two programs work together to provide students with the benefits of yoga and mindfulness in helping them to develop skills and strategies to assist them in becoming calm, focussed and emotionally balanced individuals. The program is non spiritual and accommodates students of all backgrounds and religions and links to our Health Education program. As such, it is an expectation that all students participate in the program.

Some of the benefits of this program may include:

  • enhancing motor skills, balance and coordination
  • improving concentration
  • boosting attention and focus
  • reducing anger and frustration
  • improving quality of sleep
  • reducing stress, anxiety and depression
  • encouraging creativity and self confidence

We hope the strategies and skills that students learn equip them with life skills that they may continue to draw on.

The program will be conducted by a Perth based company called Yogazoo. Their website can be accessed through the following link.

https://www.yogazoo.com.au/

The program will cost $12.00 per child and payment and the incursion form was due by Friday 23rd April 2021.

This is the first time Newborough Primary School has introduced yoga for children into our school. We believe it will be beneficial for all students and hope it is well supported by our community.

Perth Children’s Occupational Therapy

Parents often report the "after school meltdown"- kids either come home extremely volatile and emotional, or become quiet and withdrawn. Why does this happen?⠀

Firstly, the social and behavioural expectations of kids are far greater at school than they are at home. Kids have to use a lot of energy and resources to pay attention, follow directions, sit still, retain information, manage friendships, please their teacher...the list goes on. When it comes time to head home, it can be challenging for kids to conjure up the same amount of resources required to keep it together.⠀⠀

Secondly, they've had to manage all of this without their comfort person, their primary attachment figure - their parent/caregiver. This means that once school has finished, they may feel frustrated by the fact that they were left to deal with 6-7 hours of some pretty tough stuff on their own.

Thirdly, they feel like they can melt down at home with their caregivers, because this is their comfort zone, where they know that they are safe, supported and loved. No matter how big the meltdown, they know that their special big person will be there to pick up the pieces.

How can you help a child experiencing the "after-school restraint collapse"?

  • Spend an extra 5-10 mins with them before school⠀
  • Send them to school with notes in their lunchbox, a picture of you, or a toy that reminds them of you⠀
  • Instead of focusing on the goodbye, and telling them all of the fun things they will do that day, redirect their attention to your next hello, e.g. “Have a great day – when I pick you up, shall we go to the park or library?”⠀
  • Give them time to relax and have a snack after school, before asking them about their day⠀
  • Engage in physical activity when you get home⠀
  • Have some down time before doing homework (if your school gives homework...)⠀
  • Offer understanding and empathy, rather than punishment/discipline for any unwanted behaviour⠀

Respond as best you can with the resources you have.

New play-based learning painting in the Pre-Primary – Thank you, P&C!

Many thanks to our P&C for funding our new play based learning painting that we had completed in the Pre-primary playground over the holidays. Students arrived back this term to a beautiful mural of numbers up to 20, high frequency words and our sound sequence for teaching reading. We also had both the Kindy and Pre-primary bike tracks freshened up with new paint. It all looks spectacular!

Ripper Reader

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Parents and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time. Please email Ms Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7.

Technology

In Design and Technology, the Year Two students have been learning about forces that affect motion. They created some wonderful marble runs to demonstrate the impact of friction and gravity.

A competition was held to determine which marble run could keep the marble in continual motion for the longest. Well done to Brody and Nash who not only won the competition, but were able to give a detailed explanation to the class as to how they achieved this.

Crazy Hair Day

Our student leaders organised crazy hair day for The Lord Mayor’s Emergency Relief Fund. Thank you to Newborough Students and Staff, we raised $255.

Choir News

Last term, our choirs were recorded for the Telethon Giving Function announcing the 65 recipients of the funds that were raised last year. Thirty students from our Senior Choir joined students from Baldivis Gardens Primary to perform live at this event at the Crown Theatre. Telethon raised over $46 million in 2020 and we are very proud to be a part of this fundraising event. It was a very exciting experience and it was a great honour for our students to perform in front of distinguished guests such as the premier Mark McGowan.

This is a voice recording of both choirs singing together at our final rehearsal and the big screen recording that was used during the live performance.

Tech Tips

Parents and carers play an important role in helping children to develop digital intelligence — the social, emotional and practical skills needed to successfully navigate the digital world.

Even for preschool children, it is never too early to instil good habits, and as your child gets older it is useful to keep reminding them of these basic digital intelligence principles: respect, empathy, critical thinking, responsible behaviour and resilience. These are also principles you can emphasise with your child when things go wrong.

For more information on developing digital intelligence go to the following link: Good habits start young | eSafety Commissioner

NAPLAN BYOD Tech Requirement 2021

Parents of students who have a BYOD device in Year 5 are asked to check and help their child download the latest version of the NAPLAN Locked Down Browser. It can be found by going to Locked down browser (assessform.edu.au)

Smiling Minds

Smiling Mind is the program we use to practice mindfulness at Newborough as one of a range of well- being tools we teach students to support positive well-being.

To gain the benefits of mindfulness meditation it needs to be practised regularly. The best way for parents and caregivers to support children to learn to be mindful is to model it by learning about practising mindfulness themselves. While we understand that parents and caregivers already have a huge amount on their plate, the good news is that engaging with mindfulness not only benefits children, it also supports parents and caregivers' well-being, and the well-being of the family as a whole.

To access this program simply search Smiling Mind and then you will need to register to set up an account.

Once you have done this have a look at this link to start your 'at home' learning and practice.

https://www.smilingmind.com.au/at-home

The benefits of regular meditation are:

  • reduces worry, anxiety and distress
  • creates a sense of calm
  • to learn to relax and regulate emotions
  • improves concentration and productivity
  • develop a sense of empathy and connectedness
  • enjoy better health and sleep

Just like we make time to exercise our body, mindfulness is exercise for our brain and if you spend time putting a smile on your mind your body will thank you for it.

Enjoy this tool, it may be of use in supporting your at home evening routine, and please let us know of any successes you are having using it at home. Ask your child about mediations they have tried in class and practice them together.

Have a look at Mrs Tennant's Year 1 class practising with their eye masks. Way to go Year 1!

Interschool Swimming Carnival –

In the last week of Term 1, our team of 53 swimmers from Years 4 – 6 travelled to Greenwood College for our annual Interschool Swimming Carnival to compete against students from the Central Coastal District comprising of Glengarry, Duncraig and Hillarys Primary Schools.

Our school swimming captains, of and Zamia W and Marko B and our vice-captains, Nina R and Owen Mc demonstrated excellent leadership skills as did all the other children who willingly assisted Mr Worthy in the school bay when the leaders where swimming. The students all represented their school as superb ambassadors, demonstrating excellent team spirit and sportsmanship and the ‘Newborough Way’ of respect, kindness, team work and challenging themselves.

Our team participated with great endeavour in all events against much improved swimmers from all the other schools. Congratulations to Glengarry who finished in first place overall having greatly improved since 2019 when they finished in 3rd place demonstrating how training for an event can greatly enhance your individual and team’s outcome. Hillarys also showed a huge improvement in their swimming skills and finished only 23 points behind Glengarry in 2nd place. This year, our team finished in a very creditable third place and finished the carnival with a very exciting win in the Grand Relay. We would like to sincerely congratulate all of the competitors on your fabulous efforts, sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the carnival.

As always, there are many people to thank for helping to get our swimming team prepared for the carnival. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered and assisted with the many jobs at the carnival. Your efforts were greatly appreciated by all of the staff, parents and students from each of the schools participating. Thank you to our wonderful parents for your ongoing support and assistance at the training session. Thank you to Mr Worthy, Mr Stenhouse and Mr Medland for your assistance at the carnival and to all of the parents and friends who came along to support their children. A fantastic effort once again Newborough!
