Principal’s Introduction

Newborough Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all involved in last Friday’s School Swimming Carnival. The day was hot and so was all the action in the pool. Students from Years 4-6 competed in the Newborough Way Challenging themselves to do their best, work as a and show Respect and Kindness to competitors and team-mates. Thank you to the fantastic parents who helped with all the jobs, including setting up and packing away at the end of the day. A special thanks to Mrs Williams who organised the whole day and is still quite restricted with her own return to work from her knee injury. The staff involved also did a fabulous job. From this carnival our School Swimming team has been selected and notes sent home in preparation for next Tuesday’s Interschool Carnival at Greenwood Senior High School.

Term Two

Term Two commences on Monday19th April. Our School Development Day will be on Friday 4th June (Week 7) coinciding with the Western Australia Day Long Weekend.

Meet the Board will continue in the next edition of the newsletter.

Our Fabulous P&C

I encourage every family to engage and be part of our fabulous P&C. After all this is for the benefit of your child(ren) and the school. The P&C embodies the spirit of Newborough and is the envy of many schools who simply don’t have this level of parent and community support. It helps make Newborough stand out. It is about support, community and it is a lot of fun and a great way to make lifelong friends.

The P&C supports the school in so many ways including running the Canteen, Uniform Shop, Booklist and Stationery at the start of the year, the Entertainment Book, providing shade covers, playground equipment and the Nature playground, the colourful and functional quadrangle, our wonderful Netball Club and the Newbro Dad’s. The P&C also supports infrastructure projects like the kitchen gardens, sustainability shed and outdoor classroom, water coolers, lots of different teaching resources and most importantly running a whole series of fantastic events such as the recent Democracy Sausage Sizzle, the Colour Run, Athletics Carnival Sausage Sizzle, Walk and Ride to School Day, Busy Bees, the Easter Raffle, welcome coffee van and the crazy end of school year picnic. When there are special occasions such as the 60th Year celebration and Fair, and the ANZAC Breakfast for the 100th Year of ANZAC the P&C were there.

Getting involved doesn’t mean attending every meeting or event. This year the week 3 meetings will be on Wednesday’s at 7:00pm in the Library and the week 8 meetings on Mondays at 7:00pm. When there is opportunity the P&C need helpers to step up volunteer. There are many opportunities for you and your family to be involved. Keep the spirit of Newborough strong by being involved.

Election Sizzling Success

Thank you to all who helped last weekend at the Election Day sizzle. We couldn't have done it without you! Despite all the early polling it was a great success, we sold out of food by 2pm.

Special thanks to Bec Brown our chief organiser who was able to secure us gift vouchers (Scarborough Coles and Karrinyup Woolies), cost-price Danishes and donation of all the eggs (both by Doubleview IGA) which really helped our profits. Early figures are suggesting a profit of about $2500. Special mention also to Susanna Mulroney baker extraordinaire for her dozens of cupcakes and cookies that sold out in record time.

P&C Meeting and Colour Run

The next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 24th March at 7pm in the library. At this meeting we will be discussing whether or not we hold a big event this year such as the Colour Run. The tentative date for this is Saturday the 8th May. We would love to do something amazing like this for the kids and it would also raise a bit of extra money to go towards the redevelopment of the Nature Playground. However, without 2-3 parents stepping forward to head up the organisation of this event it just won't happen. If you think this is something that you could do in a small team then please let us know (guidance and advice provided!). In the past, P&C run events have been organised by a very small team of the same parents year after year, some of these parents have now moved on and the others are just not able to lead this event this year. Please consider how you might be able to assist and let us know. You can email your interest or any questions you may have to newboroughpcsec@gmail.com or come along to the meeting to find out more.

Requests for Outside Services to Use School Facilities

There has been a considerable increase in the number of parents and outside agencies requesting to use school facilities to provide in school time counselling and services to students. These services include psychology services, speech and occupational therapy, language and mathematics tutoring. In most cases these services should be delivered out of school hours at home or at the service providers premises. We have very limited facilities to accommodate these requests. Withdrawal from class often means missing out on important curriculum delivery and disruption to classes. Each request is considered on merit and whether we have rooms available. It should not be expected that the school will accommodate each request.

Priority is given to services offered through the Department of Education and where students have detailed, school developed, Individual Education Plans.

Harmony Week – Developing Cultural Acceptance through Harmony Week- Week 8

Harmony Day (Sunday the 21st of March) celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. In schools we celebrate inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the traditional owners of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world. The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for all and an understanding how all Australians equally belong to this nation and enrich it.

As part of our Harmony Week activities this year in Week 8, Term 1, we will have open classes in Japanese for parents to attend, a Harmony Day assembly and all students will participate in making Friendship Bands with their colour of their national flag/Aboriginal flag.

Japanese Open Classrooms – Week 8: Wednesday 24th – Friday 26th March

NPS and Sensei Pemberton warmly invites parents to participate in their child’s Japanese lesson during Week 8. Please see the timetable below. Please sign in at the front office to attend the lesson before making your way over to the Japanese classroom. Please note that you must have signed a Confidentiality Declaration form to attend the Japanese open lesson. These forms can be found in the Front Office if you have not already signed and returned one.

YOGAZOO

Yogazoo! It may sound familiar to you! This is the Yoga Program we organised in 2020 for Term 2 that was cancelled due to COVID-19. We have rebooked this program for Term 2 this year as part of our Wellbeing program.

Newborough Primary School has always had a major focus on the pastoral care of our students. For the last three years we have been involved in a well-being journey to complement our Positive Behaviour in Schools program which focusses on the positive behaviours of Respect, Team Work, Kindness and Challenge Yourself. This year we are continuing to implement the Smiling Minds program and Yogazoo in Schools program. These two programs work together to provide students with the benefits of yoga and mindfulness in helping them to develop skills and strategies to assist them in becoming calm, focussed and emotionally balanced individuals. The program is non spiritual and accommodates students of all backgrounds and religions and links to our Health Education program. As such, it is an expectation that all students participate in the program.

Some of the benefits of this program may include:

  • enhancing motor skills, balance and coordination
  • improving concentration
  • boosting attention and focus
  • reducing anger and frustration
  • improving quality of sleep
  • reducing stress, anxiety and depression
  • encouraging creativity and self confidence

We hope the strategies and skills that students learn equip them with life skills that they may continue to draw on.

The program will be conducted by a Perth based company called Yogazoo. Their website can be accessed through the following link.

https://www.yogazoo.com.au/

The program will cost $12.00 per child and payment and the incursion form is due by Friday 23rd April 2021. (We will send the forms home in Week 6)

This is the first time Newborough Primary School has introduced yoga for children into our school. We believe it will be beneficial for all students and hope it is well supported by our community.

Pre Primary Technology

The Pre-Primary classes have been studying how toys move in their Design and Technology lessons this term. As a culmination to a series of fun lessons about movement, student had an opportunity to design and build their very own toy! They used recycled materials from home to create these masterpieces. Well done to all of the students for their beautiful creations.

Tech Tips

Taming Technology

At school this week the Year 6 students participated in a Webinar run by the ESafety Commissioner. The Webinar was about being an eSafe kid: Being an upstander which explores how a small action can cause ie. posting a photo or a comment online can cause harm. It looks at ways students can be upstanders and support their friends online.

This week’s tech tip for parents is about taming technology by using parental controls and other tools to maximise online safety in your home. Having a range of devices at home can offer a lot of benefits but there is a need to understand the risks associated with devices and how you can protect yourself and your family while using them.

The link below offers a range of skills and advice on how you can maximise online safety at home:

https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/skills-advice/taming-technology

At school we hear about a range of online activities that students engage in. This includes online games, social media and educational platforms. If you aren’t sure what your child is accessing or are unsure of what your child is asking to use, the Office of safety has put out an safety guide for parents to access.

It is available at by clicking this link:

https://www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/esafety-guide

Smiling Minds

Smiling Mind is the program we use to practice mindfulness at Newborough as one of a range of well- being tools we teach students to support positive well-being.

To gain the benefits of mindfulness meditation it needs to be practised regularly. The best way for parents and caregivers to support children to learn to be mindful is to model it by learning about practising mindfulness themselves. While we understand that parents and caregivers already have a huge amount on their plate, the good news is that engaging with mindfulness not only benefits children, it also supports parents and caregivers' well-being, and the well-being of the family as a whole.

To access this program simply search Smiling Mind and then you will need to register to set up an account.

Once you have done this have a look at this link to start your 'at home' learning and practice.

https://www.smilingmind.com.au/at-home

The benefits of regular meditation are:

  • reduces worry, anxiety and distress
  • creates a sense of calm
  • to learn to relax and regulate emotions
  • improves concentration and productivity
  • develop a sense of empathy and connectedness
  • enjoy better health and sleep

Just like we make time to exercise our body, mindfulness is exercise for our brain and if you spend time putting a smile on your mind your body will thank you for it.

Enjoy this tool, it may be of use in supporting your at home evening routine, and please let us know of any successes you are having using it at home. Ask your child about mediations they have tried in class and practice them together.

Have a look at Mrs Tennant's Year 1 class practising with their eye masks. Way to go Year 1!

Sports News Faction Swimming Carnival:

Last Friday, the children in Year’s 4 – 6 travelled to Churchlands Senior High School to participate in NPS annual Faction Swimming Carnival. With much anticipation from the all of the students, staff and parents, the carnival was enjoyed by all despite a very hot day. The swimming carnival is a wonderful opportunity for every child to develop their swimming confidence and swimming abilities by being involved in a range of activities from novelty fun events to competitive racing depending on their individual ability level.

All of the children who participated, demonstrated the Newborough values of Respect, Kindness, Team Work and Challenge Yourself. The students participated with great effort and determination to do their best for their team. For some children, it was their first time in a swimming carnival and for many children they had to overcome their own anxiety to demonstrate courage, determination and persistence to swim in the events. No matter where the children finished in any event, they were rewarded with the knowledge that they had succeeded in their personal challenge and that their efforts were acknowledged by their family, friends and teachers who had supported them throughout their event.

All around the pool area the children’s endeavour, team spirit and sportsmanship were on display. The carnival provides an opportunity for maximum participation at the children’s level of swimming experience and ability. All of the children who attended had a fun and rewarding experience. It was delightful to see so many children smiling, cheering, encouraging and congratulating their team mates during all of the events.

It was fabulous to see such a wonderful turn out of parents, grandparents, friends and former students to support the children. Our carnivals would not be as successful and memorable for the children without the amazing assistance and support that the parents and staff provide. I would like to sincerely thank all parents, staff and former students who helped with training and all of the jobs before, during and after the carnival. Special thanks to Mr Stenhouse, Mr Medland and Mr Worthy and all the parents who assisted with the set up prior to the carnival and the packing up after the carnival concluded. I am so grateful of the support you have all provided to ensure the students had a memorable carnival.

This year, Manning proved to be a very strong team and led from the start to the finish of the carnival despite Connor and Corbett always challenging them in every event. Congratulations and well done to all members of every team for your terrific efforts.

Final Scores:

1st Place – Manning – 464 points
2nd Place – Corbett – 328 points
3rd Place – Connor – 267 points

We would like to congratulate the following children who won the Championship medallions –

Year 4 Runner-Up Champions - Sophie Johansen (Manning) and Jordy Hart (Corbett)
Year 4 Champions - Alexis Maxwell (Connor) and Ray Shen (Manning)
Year 5 Runner-Up Champions – Rebecca Tierney(Corbett) and Paul Baur (Corbett)
Year 5 Champions - Rose Hiscock (Manning) and Marko Mason Leckey (Manning)
Year 6 Runner-Up Champions – Nina Richardson (Corbett) and Owen McCallum (Corbett)
Year 6 Champions - Zamia Whitney (Manning) and Marko Brankovic (Manning)

Interschool Swimming

On Tuesday, 30th March our Interschool team of 49 students, will travel to Churchlands Senior High School to compete against Hillarys, Duncraig and Glengarry Primary Schools in the Coastal District Interschool Swimming competition. Selected students for this carnival had a training session after school at Churchlands SHS last week. Training has now concluded for this event.

This year, Hillarys is the organising school for this event. A huge thank you to all of the parents who have kindly volunteered to assist at the carnival this year as the carnival cannot run smoothly without assistance form volunteers.

We wish all the members of the interschool swimming team the very best of luck.

Go Newborough!

Canteen News

Canteen Open

The Canteen has reopened for 2021. We have nearly finalised the Term 1 Menu and will post it on the School’s website shortly.

Volunteers

We are always in need of volunteers for the Canteen to run effectively. As per last year, we will continue to encourage volunteers via the Parent Reps. However, we will now dedicate a week to each Classroom rather than a Year group. This will mean that each Classroom will only be asked to participate no more than once a term.

Even if it’s not your Classroom’s turn to assist, we are always happy for any time you can spare. Below is a link to the Volunteer Roster. Although a busy environment, it’s a supportive and friendly one. If you’re thinking of volunteering and have any questions, please feel free to pop in Monday/Wednesday/Friday or e-mail me at newborough.canteen.manager1@gmail.com.

COVID-19 and Sick Students

We are still amid the pandemic response and the risks are ever present, as witnessed by the recent unexpected outbreaks in South Australia. This means we continue to stick strongly to the health recommendations for social distancing, particularly for adults. Here at school, we actively promote washing hands, cleaning with disinfectant, staying home if unwell and sneezing/coughing into the crux of the elbow. Please do NOT send your child/ren to school if they are exhibiting any cold-like symptoms. The restrictions for social distancing of students has been relaxed by the Education Department on advice from the Health Department for schools. We still apply distancing as much as practical in the classroom and playgrounds.

Birthday Cakes/Gifts for Students

A reminder that we are not allowing the sharing of birthday cakes, presents etc. for birthdays or other celebrations due to the COVID restrictions. It remains too risky.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.
