Principal’s Introduction

School Board Parent Voting and Brief Update on Board Happenings

I am pleased to be able to announce that Miss Lauren Danker has been elected unopposed to the staff vacancy on the Board. Lauren, currently a year six teacher, brings a wealth of experience in various schools and the Department’s Leadership Institute where she trained mentored and coached level 3 teachers, Senior teachers and Graduate teachers. Lauren replaces Nick Stenhouse who has been on the Board for five years.

We have a had a wonderful response to fill the two Parent Board vacancies with three high quality candidates. The candidates are Denise Sanderson, Callan Rose and Rebecca McGuckin. As we are now required to go to a voting process parents/guardians will shortly receive a brochure and a voting slip. This will be distributed on Friday. Copies of the brochure and voting slips will be made available at the front office and on the school’s website. There will be a one week voting period. All Parents/Guardians are entitled to one vote including new enrolments for 2021.

The Board also has two Community member vacancies to fill. These appointments are made by the Board. I have attached selection criteria, kindly developed by Cam Leckey, Deputy Board Chair, to help identify suitable candidates. Please let me know if you know someone who may be suitable to consider or would like to discuss further. We are hoping to meet potential candidates to get to know them at our final meeting on 7th December.

This has been a very busy and challenging year for the Board. We’ve struggled to get full membership at meetings and even to hold meetings during the close down period of the COVID response.

One of our big tasks has been to develop the School’s new Business Plan 2021-2024. This is in the final stages and is looking very good. There is a strong emphasis on Enriching Strong Community, Empowering Successful Students and Enhancing Collaborative Staff.

One of the other main areas for discussion has been the Opening and Closing Arrangements for the school. This includes discussion on out of school hours play opportunities, gate opening and closing times, safety and security, legislated responsibilities, public and school relationships and staff capabilities to do their work. As you can imagine this has been a very complex and contentious topic as there are strong and divergent opinions. As such I have respectfully endeavoured to seek feedback and ideas that will best serve our school well into the future. This is an operational matter and one that the final decision is the responsibility of the Principal. As I move to a final decision on this the Board, P&C and Staff have all provided feedback on a ‘draft’ proposal I have put forward. I understand there will be those who may not agree with the final decision. There is always room to respectfully agree to disagree. I am hoping to advise the school community of the new arrangements as soon as possible if not for implementation for the last few weeks of 2020 then for the start of 2021.

Don’t wait for someone to lead you. Lead yourself.

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

COVID-19 and Sick Students

We are still amid the pandemic response and the risks are ever present, as witnessed by the recent unexpected outbreaks in South Australia. This means we continue to stick strongly to the health recommendations for social distancing, particularly for adults. Here at school, we actively promote washing hands, cleaning with disinfectant, staying home if unwell and sneezing/coughing into the crux of the elbow. Please do NOT send your child/ren to school if they are exhibiting any cold-like symptoms. The restrictions for social distancing of students has been relaxed by the Education Department on advice from the Health Department for schools. We still apply distancing as much as practical in the classroom and playgrounds.

Birthday Cakes/Gifts for Students

A reminder that we are not allowing the sharing of birthday cakes, presents etc. for birthdays or other celebrations due to the COVID restrictions. It remains too risky.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Pre-Primary - Year Five Presentation Morning

Tuesday 15th December 8.50am in the Undercover Area

This year, the Pre-Primary to Year 5 Presentation Assembly will be held on Tuesday 15th December at 8.50am in the school’s undercover area. This Presentation Assembly will recognise students, regardless of the Year Level in split grades, who have achieved their classes’ Academic, Citizenship and Endeavour Awards, as well as classroom Fitness Awards. The new 2021 Year 6 Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl will also be announced along with the Faction Captains for 2021.

Academic Award: This award is presented to students who achieve not only excellent results across all learning areas but displays a true virtue of wisdom. These students show a love for learning; they challenge themselves to do better; they show creativity, curiosity, are a critical thinker and respond and act upon feedback. The winners of this award are not always the student who achieves the highest grades consistently in the class. These students earn this award through both their academic achievement and character strengths to pursue academic excellence. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

Citizenship Award: This award is presented to students for showing excellent civics and citizenship qualities and the virtue of humanity. These students show kindness, teamwork, respect, warmth and are genuine in their approach to everyone. These students show a strength in understanding others and treating others fairly. They set an example in their understanding of what needs to be done and they use their initiative to help others. They show leadership, and modesty, in encouraging and organising others in an unbiased way. The recipients of this award are community minded. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

Endeavour Award: This award is presented to students that show the strengths that help them persevere, apply consistent effort and set goals to improve. They challenge themselves regularly, face difficulties with a growth mindset, finish what is started, shows valour and bravery and reflects on and talks about their learning and growth. These students want to improve and want to learn and they work hard to do so. Their academic achievement may be at any level as this award recognises student aptitude over academic grades. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

If you have any queries in regards to the end of year Pre-Primary to Year 5 awards, please do not hesitate to contact me. Karen.tucknott2@education.wa.edu.au

The School and P&C value the camp as it fosters independence, teamwork and a sense of adventure. Please get behind this worthy cause and forward to ALL your friends and family so they can stock up for the holiday season!

WISE Winery is a local WA Winery, they provide a range of wines and gin. WISE are able to deliver direct to your door and ship Australia wide (freight free).
