Principal’s Introduction

School Board Nominations

Are you looking for a way to be more engaged in your child’s school? Are you looking to make a positive contribution to the direction of school? We are seeking nominations from parents/legal guardians to join the School Board in the role of Parent Representative. You’ll join a team including other parent representatives along with the Principal, and staff and community representatives that provides advice to assist the School to identify, plan and resource its strategic objectives.

You do not need any prior experience of working on a Board and we encourage diverse membership that is representative of our varied school community. New members of the Board will be offered training and support. You can find detailed information about the School Board on our school website below.

http://www.newboroughps.wa.edu.au/our-school/school-board/

If you are interested please email or supply in writing your expression of interest to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au by 3:00pm, Friday 13th November 2020. If there are more nominees than positions available then candidates will be asked to provide a 250-word brief about themselves and what they can bring to the Board. All parents/legal guardians in the school will then have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate.

For further information please contact John Worthy (Principal) email John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au, phone 94461025 or Callan Rose (Board Chair) on 0410 490 482, email callan.rose@uwa.edu.au

School Development Days 2021

The school Board has approved the following three days as School Development Days (Pupil Free Days) for next year. This may assist you planning holidays.

Term 2 Friday 4th June (Week 7) This allows for an extra-long four-day weekend including Western Australia Day

Term 3 Monday 19th July (Week 1)

Term 4 Monday 11th October (Week 1)

All Government schools have Thursday and Friday 28/29 January, before students return, as SDD’s. The final SDD, after student’s finish will be traded back into early closes Tuesday sessions for staff and will not impact families.

Staff Car Park

Work will commence shortly on our new Staff Carpark at the front of the school. The project is being run by the Department of Finance, Building Management and works as part of the State Governments’ Priority Maintenance Funding.

There will be three trees removed during the project including the Pepper tree and two smaller gum trees. Our school has a policy of replacing any trees with a factor of five. Next year for National Tree Planting Day, Friday 20th July, sponsored by Planet Ark and Toyota, we will arrange for each class to plant at least one tree or large shrub in various locations around the school. We will seek sponsorship from the City of Stirling and Scarboro Toyota who have helped us in the past.

Containers for Change

Newborough PS Scheme Id: C10245611 (Use this if dropping off to a collection center)

As of Friday 30th October we have saved 628 containers going into landfill and this will raise $62.80 that will go directly into Sustainability activities for our school. Ky Koerber, Lily Salter and Jai Rice are the three student leaders who are assisting with the promotion, sorting and counting of the containers. They have been helping me provide information sessions for each class promoting the importance of helping the environment and the value of recycle and re-use.

If you have containers that have 10 Cent Refund on them bring them to school and drop them off at the trailer between 8:25 and 8:40am each day. Students know how to put the containers in the correct green garden bag. If there is no one in attendance you can place the containers in the extra-large light green bag and our student leaders will sort them and add them to the tally.

Shade Shelter Project

Another exciting project that is now getting final approvals from the council is the installation of a standalone shade shelter that will butt up to the eastern end of the Library. This will have a flat patio style roof and a concrete floor where the seats currently on the grassed area in front of the Library can be painted and relocated under the shade. The contractor, Outdoor World, are hopeful to have this project completed by the 11th of December. We will get the graduating year sixes to paint the tables and seats. This area will be dedicated to them in recognition of the difficult year they have faced.

Sun Protection Policy

Our school has a sun protection policy for students and staff to ensure appropriate sun protection behaviour is implemented. We are a recognised SunSmart School. Our membership to the SunSmart program is now valid for another three years until October 2023.

Did you know that Australia has amongst the highest rate of skin cancer in the world? Damage to our skin begins when the UV Index reaches 3 or more. It builds up year after year and increases our chances of developing skin cancer in later life. As students are at school during times when ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels are highest, our school plays an important role in minimising your child's UV exposure.

Your child's health and wellbeing are very important to us. Our sun protection policy will ensure that we minimise student’s exposure to the sun and provide an environment that positively influences sun protection behaviour. The main elements of the policy include:

  • All students must wear a broad-brimmed, legionnaire or bucket hat when the UV Index is 3 or above (these hats protect the face, ears and neck – caps are not appropriate).
  • All staff are encouraged to wear a broad-brimmed, legionnaire or bucket hat when outside.
  • The use of minimum SPF30, broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen is available in all classes and for events in the sun. The school and P&C have jointly funded this.
  • Sun protective clothing is part of the school uniform/dress code.
  • Programs on skin cancer prevention will be included in the school curriculum.
  • Outdoor activities are rescheduled, whenever possible, to minimise the time outdoors when UV radiation is at harmful levels.
  • The school has sufficient shade or is working towards increasing shade, such as our new shade shelter, in the school grounds.
  • The sun protection policy is implemented throughout the year.

We are committed to the future health and well-being of your children, and your support is very important if our sun protection policy is going to succeed. You can help by acting as a role model to your children, this includes:

  • Adopting sun protective behaviour such as Slip! Slop! Slap! Seek! and Slide!
  • Talking to your child about the importance of sun protection at home;
  • Encouraging your children to adopt sun protective behaviour when the UV Index is 3 or above (visit www.myuv.com.au to find out your local sun protection times), and
  • Sending your child to school with a broad-brimmed, legionnaire or bucket hat.

Should you have any questions regarding the new policy please do not hesitate to contact me.

Students work hardest for teachers they like and respect. When I am asked, “How do I get the students to like and respect me?” my immediate responses is, “Like and respect them first.”

Dr Debbie Silver

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Birthday Cakes/Gifts for Students

A reminder that we are not allowing the sharing of birthday cakes, presents etc. for birthdays or other celebrations due to the COVID restrictions. It remains too risky.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Pre-Primary to Year Five Presentation Morning

Save the date: Tuesday 15th December 8.50am in the Undercover Area

This year, the Pre-Primary to Year 5 Presentation Assembly will be held on Tuesday 15th December at 8.50am in the school’s undercover area. This Presentation Assembly will recognise students, regardless of the Year Level in split grades, who have achieved their classes’ Academic, Citizenship and Endeavour Awards, as well as classroom Fitness Awards. The new 2021 Year 6 Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl will also be announced along with the Faction Captains for 2021.

Academic Award: This award is presented to students who achieve not only excellent results across all learning areas but displays a true virtue of wisdom. These students show a love for learning; they challenge themselves to do better; they show creativity, curiosity, are a critical thinker and respond and act upon feedback. The winners of this award are not always the student who achieves the highest grades consistently in the class. These students earn this award through both their academic achievement and character strengths to pursue academic excellence. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

Citizenship Award: This award is presented to students for showing excellent civics and citizenship qualities and the virtue of humanity. These students show kindness, teamwork, respect, warmth and are genuine in their approach to everyone. These students show a strength in understanding others and treating others fairly. They set an example in their understanding of what needs to be done and they use their initiative to help others. They show leadership, and modesty, in encouraging and organising others in an unbiased way. The recipients of this award are community minded. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

Endeavour Award: This award is presented to students that show the strengths that help them persevere, apply consistent effort and set goals to improve. They challenge themselves regularly, face difficulties with a growth mindset, finish what is started, show valour and bravery and reflect on and talks about their learning and growth. These students want to improve and want to learn and they work hard to do so. Their academic achievement may be at any level as this award recognises student aptitude over academic grades. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

If you have any queries in regards to the end of year Pre-Primary to Year 5 awards, please do not hesitate to contact me. Karen.tucknott2@education.wa.edu.au

WISE Winery Fundraiser

Newborough P&C are running a wine fundraiser to subsidise the cost for the 2021 Year 6 Camp. The School and P&C value the camp as it fosters independence, teamwork and a sense of adventure. Please get behind this worthy cause and forward to ALL your friends and family so they can stock up for the holiday season!

WISE Winery is a local WA Winery, they provide a range of wines and gin. WISE are able to deliver direct to your door and ship Australia wide (freight free).

NAIDOC Week

As you may be aware, NAIDOC Week is Sunday 8th- Sunday 15th November 2020. At Newborough Primary School, we will recognise NAIDOC Week in Week 5, 9th- 13th November 2020. The theme for this year is Always Was. Always Will Be. Our Cross-Curriculum Team in partnership with some of our Aboriginal parents, have planned a variety of activities across the school in both the led up to, and in the week of, NAIDOC Week.

Below is an outline of the activities occurring throughout the week. We encourage all parents to attend the Flag Raising Ceremony and Smoking ceremony and the Pre Primary NAIDOC Assembly.

NAIDOC Assembly –– Pre-primary Room 3 Mrs Beatty’s class

All Parents welcome and encouraged to attend

Aboriginal Guest Speakers

This includes having two of our Aboriginal parents speak to all classes during the week to develop a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture and reconciliation. These sessions will also include students painting the Aboriginal flag on rocks for students to keep to learn about the meaning of the colours of the Aboriginal flag.

Flag Raising and Smoking Ceremony – Tuesday 10th November 2020 1.15pm – all parents welcome

The school will also be having a flag raising ceremony at the new flag pole area near the basketball court and a traditional smoking ceremony afterwards in the nature playground at 1.15pm. These will be conducted by Whadjuk Noongar Elder, Neville Collard. We welcome all parents, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, to attend these ceremonies. The gates will be opened at 1:00pm for parents to enter through and make their way to the basketball court area. We recommend you wear hats as both the flag raising and smoking ceremony are outdoors.

Damper afternoon tea Thursday 12th November (volunteer parents from all year groups to help make the damper needed please)

Damper is the European term that refers to traditional bush bread or seedcake made by Aboriginals for many thousands of years. While it used to be traditionally made by crushing a variety of native seeds and sometimes nuts or roots, it has transformed to made of self-raising flour, salt, milk and butter nowadays.

To give students a taste of damper, our amazing canteen manager will be making damper scones on Thursday 12th November for each child to have one for afternoon tea that day. Each damper scone will have some butter and jam on it. Please appreciate we are trying hard to give all of our students different experiences and for this, we do need assistance. If you can please help Amanda make some damper scones on that day for all of our students, please touch base with her in the canteen or email newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au so we can pass this on to her.

However, we do realise that some parents may choose for their child not to have a damper scone, if this is the case, please email Ms Tucknott at Karen.Tucknott2@education.wa.edu.au. We will provide a gluten free damper scone to students who are gluten intolerant.

NAIDOC Assembly – Friday 13th November 8.40am – Pre-primary Room 3 Mrs Beatty’s class

The NAIDOC assembly is on Friday 13th November at 8.40am. We invite all parents to attend the assembly on the day.

Pre Primary Buddy Interviews

In Pre Primary, we have been investigating our personal and family history with Miss Ahrens. After sharing photos of our families, we prepared to interview our buddy from Ms Lydon’s and Ms Watson’s classes to learn about their family. We came up with some important questions to ask, recorded the information they told us, and had a go at comparing our own family to our buddy’s family to find similarities. A big thank you to the Year 2 and Year 3 students for being so patient and helpful.

Morning Greeting for Pre Primary Room 3

Each morning the Pre-Primary children in Room 3 say our Acknowledgment of Country, sing the Wanjoo welcome song to each other and practice the Noongar words we have been learning. What a lovely way to start the day!

Welcome back to term 4. On the home stretch! Your children should have brought a book club catalogue home with them by now. If you did not receive one, there are spare copies in the front office at the school. There are plenty of ideas for Christmas presents and if you choose the 'gift' option, they will be available to pick up from the office or myself so that they don't get spotted on the way home.
