Principal’s Introduction

Welcome Back

After such a different year we enter the last quarter with a great deal to look forward to and much to celebrate. I trust everyone had a restful and enjoyable break and is looking forward to all the great activities and events this term. I would like to sincerely thank Miss Tucknott and Mr. Stenhouse who both stepped up to the Principalship during my unexpected absence for much of term three. They did a terrific job with some difficult issues to deal with including a visit from WorkSafe. Ms Tyndall also stepped up as our Manager Corporate Services whilst Mrs Singleton was on leave. From all accounts she did a great job. We are so fortunate to have such quality staff who can step up so comfortably and well.

We are well into the Interm Swimming program at Scarborough Beach Pool. Thank you to parents who have ensured nearly every student is participating and ready each day. Students are really enjoying the swimming and warmer weather. Here is just a taste of things to come this term:-

  • NAIDOC Week including a smoking ceremony with Neville Collard
  • Assemblies with the Pre-primary classes
  • Senior Massed Choir Concert
  • Volunteer Morning Tea
  • Class Awards assembly
  • Picnic and Christmas Sing-along
  • Kindy Expo
  • Year Six Graduation assembly and dinner

Let us have a wonderful term and really enjoy our great school.

Flag Poles Project

Our Flagpoles Project is now complete with the replacement of the original flagpole with three flagpoles on a raised platform setting. The new flagpoles conform to Australian standards allowing us to proudly display the Australian, Western Australian and Aboriginal flags together. Student leaders, Riley Tlach, Will Drysdale, Sophie Dallin and Noah Blakeney, have been raising and lowering the flags each day. Many people have commented on how good this looks and how it raises the profile of our flags and their importance. The platform will allow events such as our ANZAC Service to be more easily seen and it allows for classes to perform miniplays and concerts and sit around the edges. This area is not only much more functional it looks great. The project was funded jointly by the Federal Government’s Communities Grant and the school. Thank you to our local Member for Stirling Mr Vince Connelly and the P&C for their backing and support. Mr Connelly was scheduled to be our guest speaker at the school’s ANZAC Service earlier this year that was unfortunately cancelled due to the pandemic. Hopefully, he will accept our invitation to be the 2021 guest speaker.

Container Deposit Scheme (Newborough PS Id: C10245611)

At last the Container Deposit Scheme has commenced in WA and we can start returning eligible containers for a refund. All monies made from the scheme for the school will be directed towards our Sustainability initiatives such as the kitchen gardens, paper and plastic recycling, the worm farm and much more. Making Sustainability financially sustainable.

The school has been fortunate to have gained a brand new trailer with mesh sides through a Containers for Change Grant. This will be very helpful taking containers to a refund point in Balcatta and to support other school activities such as camps, excursions, sports carnivals etc.

To get the ball rolling the trailer and a sample range of eligible containers and information is displayed next to the Canteen. Bring in your containers, check they are eligible (They must say 10c Refund on the label) and leave them in the appropriate green garden bins in front of the trailer. To assist we have two year six Sustainability Student Leaders who will assist from 8:25am untill 8:40am each school day. Please do not bring in and drop off containers at any other location at school or time.

If you wish to take containers directly to a depot you can find the list of local depots at the link below, Provide them with the Newborough Primary School Id: C10245611 and the funds will go directly to the school’s account. We are hoping lots of parent workplaces will help out.

https://www.containersforchange.com.au/wa/how-it-works

Each class will be invited for a quick session so students are aware of the containers

Open Board Meeting

The next School Board meeting is an open meeting on Monday 2nd November at which all Newborough school community members are welcome to attend. This will be a regular meeting that will have a focus on the development of the School’s next Business Plan 2021-2024. The meeting will be held in the Library from 5:00pm. Entry is via the Day care Gate next to the Kindergarten and Before/After School Centre.

Student Placements for 2021

If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you please let us know in the office by the 6th November 2020. This will assist us with planning for 2021.

As is always the case during Term 4, Newborough PS’s class organisation for the following year takes place. A number of considerations are taken into account based on improving student performance. These include: staffing numbers, resourcing, recommended class sizes, a balance of academic abilities within each class, the need to evenly distribute students with special needs (academically, socially and behaviourally), an equitable distribution of gender, the ability to work independently if placed in a multi-age class. In 2018 and 2019 we were able to make straight classes throughout the school. This is quite unusual and was the result of some luck with student numbers and agreements with teachers. Whilst we will try to have straight classes it simply may not be possible in some areas each year.

If you wish to communicate to me your child’s special needs or considerations, please present your correspondence to the Principal via the office marked “Private and Confidential” by Friday 20th November (Week 6). You may wish to email your correspondence to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au Please note, this information will be considered when placing your child, however, all parent preferences may not be facilitated. Requesting a particular teacher will not be considered. Only sound educational reasons will be considered. This information will be added to the data we already have.

The placement of children and the make-up of classes is made in consultation with teachers. It is not a parent decision. Every child is equally important. The final decision for placements rests with the Principal. If you have any queries or would like to discuss this, please contact me to make an appointment.

It is unlikely that the structure of classes, their location and teacher will be presented at the end of this year. With our numbers constantly fluctuating it would be unfair to announce classes this year and then restructure when students return. Classes will be posted on classroom doors when you pick up your booklist items at the start of 2021.

Specialist Student Placements

Congratulations to our year six graduating students who have been offered placements in select secondary school programs for 2021. We still have several who are waiting to hear including the Churchlands Football and Swimming programs.

Noongar Six Seasons Kambarang Season of Birth

Transformational time of the year. Flowers abound

During the Kambarang season, we see an abundance of colours and flowers exploding all around us. The yellows of many of the Acacias continue to abound, along with some of the Banksias and many other smaller delicate flowering plants including the Kangaroo Paw and Orchids. Also during this time, the Balgas will also start to flower, especially if they've been shaved.

One of the most striking displays of flowers to be seen during this season will be the "Mooja", or Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia). The bright orange/yellow flowers serve to signal the heat is on its way.

For the animals, October is also the most likely time of the year that you'll encounter a snake as the reptiles start to awaken from their hibernation and look to make the most of the warm to assist them in getting enough energy to look for food. It's also a time that many young families of birds will be singing out for their parents to feed them. Koolbardies (Magpies) will also be out protecting their nests and their babies.

Many things are undergoing transformation with the warm change in the weather.

Longer dry periods accompany a definite warming trend.

If it doesn’t challege you it doesn’t change you

Pre-Primary - Year Five Presentation Morning

Save the date: Tuesday 15th December 8.50am in the Undercover Area

This year, the Pre-Primary to Year 5 Presentation Assembly will be held on Tuesday 15th December at 8.50am in the school’s undercover area. This Presentation Assembly will recognise students, regardless of the Year Level in split grades, who have achieved their classes’ Academic, Citizenship and Endeavour Awards, as well as classroom Fitness Awards. The new 2021 Year 6 Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl will also be announced along with the Faction Captains for 2021.

Academic Award: This award is presented to students who achieve not only excellent results across all learning areas but displays a true virtue of wisdom. These students show a love for learning; they challenge themselves to do better; they show creativity, curiosity, are a critical thinker and respond and act upon feedback. The winners of this award are not always the student who achieves the highest grades consistently in the class. These students earn this award through both their academic achievement and character strengths to pursue academic excellence. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

Citizenship Award: This award is presented to students for showing excellent civics and citizenship qualities and the virtue of humanity. These students show kindness, teamwork, respect, warmth and are genuine in their approach to everyone. These students show a strength in understanding others and treating others fairly. They set an example in their understanding of what needs to be done and they use their initiative to help others. They show leadership, and modesty, in encouraging and organising others in an unbiased way. The recipients of this award are community minded. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

Endeavour Award: This award is presented to students that show the strengths that help them persevere, apply consistent effort and set goals to improve. They challenge themselves regularly, face difficulties with a growth mindset, finish what is started, shows valour and bravery and reflects on and talks about their learning and growth. These students want to improve and want to learn and they work hard to do so. Their academic achievement may be at any level as this award recognises student aptitude over academic grades. If a student is in a split year level class, this award will go to the recipient who displays these qualities regardless of the year level as this is a class award, not a year level award.

If you have any queries in regards to the end of year Pre-Primary to Year 5 awards, please do not hesitate to contact me. Karen.tucknott2@education.wa.edu.au

NAIDOC Week 2020: Week 5 Term 4: Always Was, Always Will Be.

Due to COVID-19, this year’s NAIDOC Week was postponed from July until November. The new dates for NAIDOC are now Sunday 8th November until Sunday 15th November.

The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week is Always Was, Always Will Be.

The following information on the theme is from The official NAIDOC Website www.naidoc.org.au

Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.

This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.

Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge.

Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels.

Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future.

Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty.

NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula.

The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples.

Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines – of our lands and our waters.

For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time.

NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country – a history which dates back thousands of generations.

It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded.

Always Was, Always Will Be

Newborough Primary School will be recognising NAIDOC Week through a range of activities in our classroom and with a flag raising ceremony and smoking ceremony in the nature playground on Tuesday 10th November 2020. More information on these activities will be given to parents closer to that week. We thank all our Aboriginal and Non-aboriginal parents who have contributed towards planning for the week and will be part of that week.

Birthday Cakes/Gifts for Students

A reminder that we are not allowing the sharing of birthday cakes, presents etc. for birthdays or other celebrations due to the COVID restrictions. It remains too risky.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Pre Primary Shape Art

In Term 3, Miss Ahrens' Pre-primaries were learning about shapes in Art and Maths. After looking at art by artist Paul Klee, the students created their own “Castle and the Sun” by drawing block castles that they made, and by using the blocks as stamps to print castles. To end the term, Ms Lydon’s class visited and we made a collaborative "shape dinosaur" drawing with our Year 2 Buddy.

Book Club

Welcome back to term 4. On the home stretch! Your children should have brought a book club catalogue home with them by now. If you did not receive one, there are spare copies in the front office at the school. There are plenty of ideas for Christmas presents and if you choose the 'gift' option, they will be available to pick up from the office or myself so that they don't get spotted on the way home.

Please make sure you complete your orders online, using the 'Scholastic Loop' app by Friday 6th November.

Don't forget that for every purchase made, the school receives 20% in credits to buy books and resources for the library.
