Leadership Team Introduction

Week 10 of Term 3! Yah! While we do not have the annual Perth Royal Show to look forward to, nor the AFL Grand Final at its normal time, I am sure ALL of us are looking forward to the two week school holidays coming up at the end of this week. It has certainly been a very different term with many highs and a few challenges along the way. A very genuine thankyou to all staff at Newborough Primary School for conducting themselves in an incredibly professional manner at every moment this term and for their amazing teamwork to ensure our school has continued to provide for the most important people in our school, our students.

As you enter the two week break, we wish you safe travels if you are heading away and remind you that holidaying with children is not actually about the holiday (because quite frankly, that is just exhausting! And expensive!). It is about making memories and spending time together. Look after yourselves and your family.

Please note that the start date for students is Term 4 is Tuesday 13th October with our in-term swimming lessons starting on Wednesday 14th October.

Last fish update before Mr Worthy returns in Term 4: The fish are still alive!

I once had a goldfish that could break-dance on carpet, but only for like 20 seconds...

Please do not hesitate to contact either Nick Stenhouse or myself if you have any queries in regards to your child or the school.

Kind regards,

Karen Tucknott
Acting Principal

Parking at Karrinyup Sports Hall on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays

Just a friendly reminder to parents parking at the school on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays for school events such as assemblies and sports days to reconsider parking at Karrinyup Sports Hall car park. On these days from 9.00 am the Senior Citizen’s group, Prime Movers, use the hall and request that the parking is available for them to use so that they do not have to walk as far to the hall.

We will open Hazlitt Sports Field on assembly days as an alternative parking venue.

We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Birthday Cakes/Gifts for Students

A reminder that we are not allowing the sharing of birthday cakes, presents etc. for birthdays or other celebrations due to the COVID restrictions. It remains too risky.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Smiling Mind @ NPS

If you haven’t already heard your child speaking about it, this year Newborough has begun implementing a program called Smiling Mind as a way to support student well-being.

This program compliments our ‘Newborough Way’ behaviours of Kindness, Respect, Teamwork and Challenge Yourself and together this forms what we call Positive Behaviour and Well Being or PBW.

Smiling Mind is a program grounded in science that teaches mindfulness through lessons and meditation practices. In today’s world, mindfulness teaches students to be present, to be more aware and focused and to take time out to put a smile on their minds. We are hoping by teaching this at Newborough to support the Smiling Mind vision of “helping every mind thrive and to provide accessible, life-long tools to support healthy minds.” You can't separate learning and wellbeing; it is essential for learning.

The benefits of teaching and practising mindfulness for students include

Teacher have engaged in Smiling Mind professional learning and as a school we are now implementing the Mindfulness curriculum and incorporating mindfulness practices such as brain breaks, breathing and meditations into our classroom and in the playground.

We are hoping that students will also start to use this free program and the tools it provides outside of school. We want to encourage our Newborough families to try Smiling Mind at home. In order to use the program log into the link below and sign up for a free account or download the app.

https://www.smilingmind.com.au/

Take a look at the ‘Families’ program which is designed to be listened to with the whole family. Currently there is a featured program on Bedtime. Other sections in the ‘Family’ program include:

  • After School
  • Any Time’
  • Introduction to Mindfulness
  • Meal Times
  • On the Go
  • Weekends

https://app.smilingmind.com.au/programs/browsecategory/13/

Practising at home as a family has benefits for the whole family and your child can explain how meditations are practised at school.

In the Newborough spirit, challenge yourself to have a go and remember to be kind to your mind!

Kindy Green putting a Smile on their minds!

Mental Health Week :

Every year, World Mental Health Day is commemorated on 10 October, with this year's theme being, "Mental Health for All: Greater Investment - Greater Access".

COVID-19 has been a global health emergency that has impacted heavily on the mental health of millions of people. Life as we knew pre-Covid-19 has changed for most of us. Being optimistic, building resilience and having the capacity to navigate through difficulties times may be even more challenging.

During Mental Health Week this year, 10 to 17 October, we can aspire to strengthen our personal wellbeing and that of our families, as well as support our friends, neighbours, and community. I have included a few websites to provide resources for your interest and information:

Constable Care

On Monday, September 21st, Hannah and Daniel from the Constable Care Team, visited our school. We had a fantastic incursion! All children in the school took part. Some of the topics in the performances included:

  • Fun Scary
  • Frenemies
  • Trending
  • Bullying
  • Healthy Relationships

The students took part in interactive role plays and even enjoyed a puppet show. It was fun and interesting to learn about different ways to deal with the many issues facing students in today's society. Everyone showed the Newborough Values of Challenge Yourself, Kindness, Teamwork and Respect, while participating and the Constable Care Team were very impressed with the engagement of our students. Well done, Newborough!

Canteen News

Sushi Day

Our first Sushi Day was a huge success, and class Canteen baskets were full with close to 600 pieces of sushi being made onsite!! It was a great feat and a massive thank you goes to our wonderful and very talented parent sushi masters Rina, Elayne, Miki, Chigisa & Jenifer. Here are some photos of the team in action.

Thank you

We would like to thank and make special mention of the very generous contribution made by Chelsea Fawell and her family, who donated a large number of items to the Canteen (crockery, cutlery, storage containers, pots, baking tins, electrical items and much more). We have been able to replace many of the older well used items, as well as add to our kitchen equipment.

Term 4 Menu

We are working on some new and exciting additions to our menu for Term 4. Keep an eye out for information on our next special Cultural food day.

Volunteers

We have recommenced requesting volunteers through each class year's Parent Rep. Please keep a lookout for an e-mail from your Parent Rep when it is your class year's week to assist. As always, if you have any spare time and wish to assist, please email me at anmeyer18@gmail.com. We are always looking for help Monday / Wednesday / Friday from 9am - 11am & 11am - 1pm. However any time you can spare is very much appreciated.

Regards

Amanda
