Leadership Team Introduction

We would like to begin this fortnight’s newsletter by informing parents and students that John Worthy is on leave for the remainder of the term. He will be back at the beginning of Term 4. Whilst on leave, I will assume the Acting Principal’s role with Nick Stenhouse working alongside me to ensure we don’t mess things up too much in Mr Worthy’s absence. I have had to have a crash course in looking after Mr Worthy’s fish so my first goal for the remainder of the term will be to hopefully keep them alive!

On a more serious note, we have received and listened to feedback from parents and at both the P and C Meeting on Monday 3rd August and at the last School Board Meeting a week ago regarding the opening and closing times of the gates. The gate times remain an ongoing discussion with many stakeholders and will stay on the agenda for review over the next few weeks. Making any decision that impacts on a large number of people is difficult and getting it right even more so.

At this current time, we are not going to change the opening and closing times of the gates and they will remain at 8.25am for opening in the morning and 3.15pm in the afternoons, except for Tuesday when they will close at 2.45pm. We realise this may not be a popular decision for some but it is the decision for now and we seek the support of the school community as we continue to consult with key bodies of the school (Staff, P&C and School Board) in regards to understanding the community needs.

We will continue to update the school community of any decisions that may arise from these discussions.

Please do not hesitate to contact either Nick Stenhouse or myself over the next five weeks if you have any queries in regards to your child or the school.

Kind regards,
Karen Tucknott
Acting Principal

Smiling Minds topic for the week: Managing Emotions

We all experience different emotions every day and some can be tricky to deal with. Some of these emotions may be fear, anger, stress, grief and jealousy and these are not particularly pleasant or enjoyable experiences. We tend to want to get rid of these emotions when they show up. In Mindfulness, we try to encourage students to approach their emotion with curiosity and openness and discuss that the emotion is just a feeling. When a difficult emotion shows up, a good thing to do is to stop what you are doing and notice where you are feeling the emotion in your body. It may be butterflies in your stomach or a heavy chest. We ask students to try and name the emotion and say to themselves, “I feel worried’. We ask students to breathe and take deep, slow breaths. When you experience difficult emotion (like anger, sadness of frustration) you may like to use these mindfulness strategies:

  1. Notice It: - ‘I am feeling worried, angry, frustrated’
  2. Name It: ‘Here is anxiety’
  3. Sit with It: ‘Let me just let it be there, as it is’
  4. And breathe – Take three or more deep, slow breaths (it will pass)

We also talk to students a lot about ‘’Catastrophe Scales”. When upset, angry, stressed, jealous or fearful, we often ask students to place the problem against a scale of catastrophe. Is it a really big problem like a fire or medical emergency? Is it a little glitch such as the end of playtime, getting out in a game or not being a line leader when you want to be? Or is the problem in between those two extremes? Catastrophe Scales help us to build our resilience when things happen that we do not like and help to assess if we are blowing events or issues out of proportion. They allow us to put problems and glitches into perspective against other real issues that happen in life. Whilst all problems are relative to the person experiencing them, in a world that is dealing with an existing pandemic, this is a good reminder for us all to assess where our problems and angst are in proportion to the important things in life.

P & C Meeting Monday 7th September

The next P&C meeting is on Monday 7th September at 7.00pm in the School Library. We encourage all families to have someone come and along and support the school. The P&C is a great way to meet other families and engage with the community. If you have never been to a P&C meeting, we assure you they are full of great people but they need more great people! You can enter the school through the Mulberry Tree gate.

Nature Playground Committee

Koorlangka Marlak Kadadjiny – (Children’s Bush Learning)

The P&C have now put together a Nature Playground Committee to look and act on what we can do to manage and improve the Nature Playground. However, more volunteers would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to be on the Committee please email P&C President Wes Gregory at Wes.Gregory@iinet.net.au

Newborough Primary School Faction Sports Carnival Years 1-6 2020

Please find attached a whole heap of really important information in regards to the Newborough Primary School Faction Carnival for Years 1 to 6 on Friday 4th September.

A carnival with a difference

Due to not having an Interschool Carnival planned this year, the school is holding a Tabloid Sports Carnival rather than a traditional Sports Carnival. We acknowledge and understand that having a different format this year may not be everyone’s preference. However, in line with our four behaviour values of Respect, Kindness, Challenge Yourself and Teamwork, we are keen to try a carnival that promotes the highest amount of inclusivity and student participation, with the goal of all students collectively earning points for their faction. This varies from a traditional carnival where many students sit for a long period of time and are not involved in many events. The tabloid carnival is designed to challenge students through the games, promote teamwork, build physical education skills and interdependence; develop respect for self and others, develop problem solving skills, and most importantly allow students to have fun in a team environment. The tabloid carnival will remain competitive; however, it will focus on team achievement rather than individual pursuit.

We are also aware of being in a very fortunate and safe state at this moment with no community transmission of COVID. However, we are still bound by the Education Department’s Guidelines for the Government’s Phase 4 COVID-19 restrictions and still need to comply with the guidelines provided to us. This year, the tabloid sports carnival means staff will be able to run the carnival independent of parent help in case a second wave of COVID hits WA over the next few weeks. Parents instead will be spectators at the tabloid carnival, allowing you all to be present in the moment of the day and enjoy watching your child/children compete in the tabloid event without needing to help out.

How the carnival will work?

The carnival will be run in three sessions.

Morning session: 9.00am-10.45am: Years 1-3 tabloid games and running races.
Midday session: 10.55-12.50pm: Years 4-6 tabloid games and running races.
Afternoon session: 1.30 – 2.20pm: Years 1-6 faction running relays, grand relay and winning faction shield presentation.

To run this event, only the year levels competing will be out on the oval at that time while the other year levels will be doing fun work in class. All year levels, however, will come out at the end of the day for the faction running relays and faction shield presentation. Parents are more than welcome to attend the whole, or just part of the faction carnival that suits them for when their child/children are competing. However, we do ask parents to comply with the current Phase 4 COVID-19 Government restrictions for school activities and observe good hygiene practices including handwashing and physical distancing of one person per 2 square metres.

Last week we sent home an email that contained all of the information you will need to know about the carnival aswell as a hard copy of the information on Wednesday to the oldest in the family. We ask you to read all of this information carefully. Here are some highlights of the information.

What students will need to bring to school:

Students will need:

  • Faction t-shirt, shorts or skirts to run in
  • Sports shoes
  • Labelled hat
  • Labelled jumper
  • Labelled water bottle (water only please)
  • Sunscreen on (we also have sunscreen in the classrooms and out on the oval)
  • Hand sanitiser will be provided by the school unless you wish to provide your child with their own.
  • Recess food (there is NO canteen – see information below)
  • Lunch food (there is NO canteen – see information below)
  • Faction tattoos already on body if students purchase them (see information below)

School Canteen Sausage Sizzle

As the lunch break for the carnival will be different to last year, we have decided the canteen will not run on Friday 4th September. This will also allow our awesome parents in the canteen, who usually cook sausgaes on the day, to just enjoy being part of their children’s sports carnival.

KEY MESSAGE: THERE IS NO CANTEEN ON Friday 4th SEPTEMBER.

However, the Canteen will run a SAUSAGE SIZZLE only on Thursday 3rd September with orders only to be placed on line through quickcliq.com.au for years P-6

Students can order either flavoured milk, flavoured juice and hot dog only for Thursday 3rd September. These will be delivered to classrooms for students lunch as normal.

http://www.quickcliq.com.au/

Thank you to the Amanda Meyer, the canteen volunteers and P and C for organizing this.

Lunch Break

You will notice in the timetable that the whole school will have a lunch break from 1.00-1.20pm. This is an eating time for all students only.

Due to the short time frame for lunch this year, students will not be eating on the oval as they have done in the past. However, parents are welcome to eat their lunch with Year 1-6 students only on the quadrangle (bring a rug and hat) or grassed area of the main school. We request that you have pre-organised food only and DO NOT bring takeaway food (eg. MacDonald’s, deli food etc.) for your child on the day as this is a quick lunch break only. If students receive food late because parents are bringing it down at lunchtime, this means they will have less time to eat. Please do not collect your younger children from Kindy or Pre-primary to eat with you as they are on a separate program for the day.

We will put a PA message over the school at 1.20pm requesting all parents return to the oval as we get students prepared for the faction march and relays for the afternoon.

Kindy Café

Our awesome Kindy teachers (Miss Anderson, Mrs Thornett and Mrs Murdoch) have organised the wonderful Kindy parents to run a food and beverage café at the sports carnival from 9am until the food runs out. We encourage you to bring cash to pay for the coffee, tea and food provided.

As students are participating the whole time in the tabloid games, please hold onto any food you buy for your children and give it to them at the lunch break and not during their carnival time.

Faction Tattoos

The P and C will be selling faction tattoos for students to wear on the day of the faction carnival. In conjunction with the P and C, we will have Year 6 Leaders go around to every classroom in Week 7 from Monday to Thursday to sell the tattoos (Monday 31st-Thursday 3rd September). The tattoos need a little bit of time to apply to the skin so we would like them put on students at home on the Friday morning, and not here at school hence giving students 4 days prior to purchase them. The tattoos will be 2 for $1.

The tattoos are of the logos of the factions.

Faction Hair Spray

The P and C will also be supplying faction coloured hair spray on the morning of the faction carnival. This will cost a gold coin donation to the P and C on the morning. As all students must be in the classroom at 8.30am, we will open the gates at 8am for the hair spraying to be done.

The hair spraying will be in two areas. A Year 1-3 area and a Year 4-6 area. Both will be on the grass area of the quadrangle. Studenst are to go to class after the hair spraying. Har spraying will stop at 8.30am.

Students are allowed to colour their hair at home prior to coming to school also.

Thank you to Carly Fowkes in particular for organising the tattoos and hair spray.

What? You want to take your other children out of classes to watch their siblings race?

Older and younger siblings at school are expected to stay in their classrooms on the day and not be signed out to watch their sibling’s races. Withdrawing students from classes for this purpose is highly disruptive to classes and staff trying to ensure either lessons or supervision is provided properly.

Early Finish – Taking students home before the end of the day

We do anticpate that the carnival will finish early. Parents are able to take students home early from their classroom once all students return to class after the presentations. Instead of the usual process of signing students out in the front office, teachers will have a class sign out sheet for you to sign.

Please note that if your child is not being picked up by yourself, they can not go home early with any other parent unless both the class teacher and the school receives a written email stating this information. Please email newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au to inform us of this.

Also please note that if you take your child home early, you can not play in the playgrounds at school until after the normal dismissal time of 2.55pm as other students are in classrooms still. This being the case, we request that all students leaving the school early must leave the actual school grounds. Thank you.

Volunteer Gardener

We are currently looking for a volunteer from our school community to assist Tim Riley, our school gardener 1 or 2 days per week.

If you are a keen green thumb and parent or grandparent, would like to volunteer some time to help please email me at Newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au. We will require you to sign in and out of the school office on the days you are here, wear appropriate clothing and foot wear.

Birthday Cakes/Gifts for Students

A reminder that we are not allowing the sharing of birthday cakes, presents etc. for birthdays or other celebrations due to the COVID restrictions. It remains too risky.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

DEPUTY NEWS

In-Term Swimming Program – Weeks One and Two, Term Four

This year’s In-Term Swimming program will be in Weeks One and Two of Term Four: Wednesday 14th October to Friday 23rd October. The swimming lessons will again be at Scarborough Beach Pool and will cost $39.00 per child. An Advice and Consent Form went home on Tuesday 28th July 2020, giving parents hopefully plenty of time and notice to pay this amount. Unfortunately, students will not be able to attend swimming without the full amount being paid.

We encourage any parents who may have difficult in paying for the in-term swimming lessons to contact Sharon Singleton, Manager of Corporate Services, to immediately to develop a Payment Plan.

Smiling Mind @ NPS

If you haven’t already heard your child speaking about it, this year Newborough has begun implementing a program called Smiling Mind as a way to support student well-being.

This program compliments our ‘Newborough Way’ behaviours of Kindness, Respect, Teamwork and Challenge Yourself and together this forms what we call Positive Behaviour and Well Being or PBW.

Smiling Mind is a program grounded in science that teaches mindfulness through lessons and meditation practices. In today’s world, mindfulness teaches students to be present, to be more aware and focused and to take time out to put a smile on their minds. We are hoping by teaching this at Newborough to support the Smiling Mind vision of “helping every mind thrive and to provide accessible, life-long tools to support healthy minds.” You can't separate learning and wellbeing; it is essential for learning.

The benefits of teaching and practising mindfulness for students include

Teacher have engaged in Smiling Mind professional learning and as a school we are now implementing the Mindfulness curriculum and incorporating mindfulness practices such as brain breaks, breathing and meditations into our classroom and in the playground.

We are hoping that students will also start to use this free program and the tools it provides outside of school. We want to encourage our Newborough families to try Smiling Mind at home. In order to use the program log into and sign up for a free account or download the app.

https://www.smilingmind.com.au/

Take a look at the ‘Families’ program which is designed to be listened to with the whole family. Currently there is a featured program on Bedtime. Other sections in the ‘Family’ program include:

  • After School
  • Any Time’
  • Introduction to Mindfulness
  • Meal Times
  • On the Go
  • Weekends

https://app.smilingmind.com.au/programs/browsecategory/13/

Practising at home as a family has benefits for the whole family and your child can explain how meditations are practised at school.

In the Newborough spirit, challenge yourself to have a go and remember to be kind to your mind!

IMSS Concert

The Newbeatz Band and Year 5 and 6 instrumental students (IMSS clarinet, flute, classical guitar and trumpet) will be performing at our Instrumental Concert on Wednesday, 23rd September from 2pm-2:50pm.

Parents are welcome to attend – all gates will be open at 1:45pm.

Telethon Virtual Choir

The senior choir had the wonderful opportunity and was invited to be part of a virtual choir for this year’s Telethon singing ‘Times like These’ with students from other public primary schools and Australian celebrities. Students were filmed by Channel 7 on a very chilly Scarborough Beach on Thursday, 13th August and was recorded at Crank Studios on Thursday, 20th August. The students really challenged themselves and, despite a bit of frostbite, showed the Newborough way of team work. Miss Tucknott and I were super proud of each and every one of our choir members. A very special thank you for the support (and braving the weather with us) to our parents at Scarborough Beach.

Vegetable Garden News!

Over the next 5 weeks the Room 6 children will be weeding and maintaining our wonderful school vegetable garden. Each Friday afternoon, our class will be heading down to the Vegetable Garden to do some weeding and watering.

In Week 10, parents from Room 6 will be coming along for a “Busy Bee in the Garden”. We will do a final end of term clean up and do some planting with parents and Room 6 children. This will mean that our Vegetable Garden is looking magnificent for the holidays and the start of Term 4!

Newbros

Hello Newbros.

It’s been a while; hopefully everyone is keeping well!

We are looking for a couple of like-minded Dad’s to take over Newbros and keep it going! The last year was a big one (we did 3 camp-outs [1 whole school], a Bingo night, daddy/daughter hair workshops and 2 Bunnings sausage sizzles) and it’s now time for Newbros to be handed over and for someone else (the next generation of Newborough dads perhaps?) to keep it going.

April 2020 was meant to be our next whole School Camp on the oval which obviously got COVID-cancelled. There is interest to host this later in the year but without the offer to take-over Newbros, unfortunately it won’t happen. Should a couple of dads be keen to take over Newbros as your own, I can do a handover and offer my services from the sidelines (a lot of the hard-work has already been done for the campout).

E-mail me at newbrodads@gmail.com and we can chat. Have a think about what Newbros means to our kids and school community. Many hands make light work as you know, so if a few dad’s took it on you could even run it as a committee and lessen the load.

Over & out for now!
Newbros
