Principal’s Introduction

Maintaining vigilance

Thank you to our school community who have maintained a vigilant approach with promoting and reinforcing physical distancing and health and hygiene messages.

All School Principals have been asked to remind their school community of the current requirements to maintain good hygiene practices and physical distancing of adults. Daily cleaning regimes, access to hand sanitiser and actively promoting hand hygiene, physical distancing and coughing/sneezing etiquette through signage will serve to keep Western Australia as safe as we can during Phase 4 of the WA Roadmap to Recovery.

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) continues to note that there is very limited evidence of transmission between children in the school environment, resulting in a relaxing of the physical distancing requirements between students.

Adults in schools should continue to keep up physical distancing of 1.5 metres where possible. All members of the school community must continue to practice good personal hygiene to better protect themselves and the general health of society.

Gathering limits are now only determined by WA's reduced two square metres per person rule. This measurement is specifically for determining the capacity of venues where adults are present.

History will judge us by the difference we make in the everyday lives of children.

Birthday Cakes/Gifts for Students

A reminder that we are not allowing the sharing of birthday cakes, presents etc. for birthdays or other celebrations due to the COVID restrictions. It remains too risky.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Year 4 2020 PEAC Testing

The Year 4 students undertake testing for PEAC each year in Term 3. This was originally scheduled to be conducted in Week 4 of this term; however, due to the impact of Covid-19 it is unable to be conducted at that time. We have been advised that PEAC testing is still likely to go ahead in Term 3 and will happen later in the term. When we are advised of dates we will let Year 4 parents and students know. Thank you for your understanding.

In-Term Swimming Program – Weeks One and Two, Term Four

This year’s In-Term Swimming program will be in Weeks One and Two of Term Four: Wednesday 14th October to Friday 23rd October. The swimming lessons will again be at Scarborough Beach Pool and will cost $39.00 per child. An Advice and Consent Form went home on Tuesday 28th July 2020, giving parents hopefully plenty of time and notice to pay this amount. Unfortunately, students will not be able to attend swimming without the full amount being paid.

We encourage any parents who may have difficult in paying for the in-term swimming lessons to contact Sharon Singleton, Manager of Corporate Services, to immediately to develop a Payment Plan.

Worm Incursion – Year 5, Room 14

On Wednesday, the 5th of August, students in Room 14 welcomed Kevin and Sam from The Worm Shed. Together, we learnt lots of different things about worms and worm farms….

Did you know there are no boy or girl worms? That’s right! Worms are hermaphrodites, which means when they mate, or tie the knot, as one student put it, both worms end up with an egg sack each. Each egg sack can contain up to ten baby worms. Worms are also clever enough to stop breeding as soon as they run out of room in an enclosure. How clever is that?

Worms don’t have any eyes or ears. They do however have a mouth and five hearts. Yes, you read that correctly, five hearts! They don’t like the sun, they breathe through their skin, and perhaps most impressively of all, their poo doesn’t smell!

Kevin and Sam have provided Newborough with a brand-new Worm Farm, which students in Room 14 will be tending to. The worms will be fed three times a week and they can eat up to one third of their body weight. Worms like to eat food scraps like veggies, fruit, even paper and cardboard like old pizza boxes! They don’t like to eat banana peels or citrus peel because those things take too long to break down. You see, worms aren’t actually eating the food we give them, they’re eating the bacteria which is breaking down the food. We need to be careful about what we feed our precious worms. Soon, students in Room 14 will begin putting bins out at lunch and recess times to collect suitable food scraps for our worms.

Students also had the chance to construct their own mini worm farms using old plastic bottles. Eventually these worms will need to be released back into the wild, your gardens at home or into the school worm farm.

We had a wonderful time learning about these wild, weird creatures known as worms. Who knew they were so strange and fascinating?

Smiling Mind @ NPS

If you haven’t already heard your child speaking about it, this year Newborough has begun implementing a program called Smiling Mind as a way to support student well-being.

This program compliments our ‘Newborough Way’ behaviours of Kindness, Respect, Teamwork and Challenge Yourself and together this forms what we call Positive Behaviour and Well Being or PBW.

Smiling Mind is a program grounded in science that teaches mindfulness through lessons and meditation practices. In today’s world, mindfulness teaches students to be present, to be more aware and focused and to take time out to put a smile on their minds. We are hoping by teaching this at Newborough to support the Smiling Mind vision of “helping every mind thrive and to provide accessible, life-long tools to support healthy minds.” You can't separate learning and wellbeing; it is essential for learning.

The benefits of teaching and practising mindfulness for students include

Teacher have engaged in Smiling Mind professional learning and as a school we are now implementing the Mindfulness curriculum and incorporating mindfulness practices such as brain breaks, breathing and meditations into our classroom and in the playground.

We are hoping that students will also start to use this free program and the tools it provides outside of school. We want to encourage our Newborough families to try Smiling Mind at home. In order to use the program log into and sign up for a free account or download the app.

https://www.smilingmind.com.au/

Take a look at the ‘Families’ program which is designed to be listened to with the whole family. Currently there is a featured program on Bedtime. Other sections in the ‘Family’ program include:

  • After School
  • Any Time’
  • Introduction to Mindfulness
  • Meal Times
  • On the Go
  • Weekends

https://app.smilingmind.com.au/programs/browsecategory/13/

Practising at home as a family has benefits for the whole family and your child can explain how meditations are practised at school.

In the Newborough spirit, challenge yourself to have a go and remember to be kind to your mind!

Kindy Green putting a Smile on their minds!

Faction Cross-Country Carnival

With a new cross-country track to challenge the children and the constraints placed upon the school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our students, staff and parents once again demonstrated the “Newborough Way” to enjoy the 2020 faction cross-country carnival event.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the carnival due to injuring my knee; however, I have been informed the carnival was once again, a very successful event for the students. Many thanks to Mrs Dayman for her assistance with training the children and designing the course in my absence. I would also like to sincerely thank Ms Tucknott, Miss Kos and all of the staff for their assistance with the administration requirements to ensure the carnival ran smoothly so that all of the Newborough community were able to enjoy this event.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated and challenged themselves to finish the cross-country course demonstrating persistence, resilience and good sportsmanship as they participated and completed the course. Thank you to all of the staff who were able to assist with all of the essential jobs to ensure the carnival ran smoothly and successfully for the students.

Final Results: In an exciting and extremely close finish, Corbett Faction narrowly beat Manning Faction by only three points to win the cross-country shield in 2020. Well done to all team members of Connor and Manning factions for your tremendous endeavours at the carnival. Congratulations to all members of Corbett Faction for being declared the champion cross-country team in 2020.

1st Corbett– 287 points
2nd Manning – 284 points
3rd Connor – 238 points

Newbros

Hello Newbros.

It’s been a while; hopefully everyone is keeping well!

We are looking for a couple of like-minded Dad’s to take over Newbros and keep it going! The last year was a big one (we did 3 camp-outs [1 whole school], a Bingo night, daddy/daughter hair workshops and 2 Bunnings sausage sizzles) and it’s now time for Newbros to be handed over and for someone else (the next generation of Newborough dads perhaps?) to keep it going.

April 2020 was meant to be our next whole School Camp on the oval which obviously got COVID-cancelled. There is interest to host this later in the year but without the offer to take-over Newbros, unfortunately it won’t happen. Should a couple of dads be keen to take over Newbros as your own, I can do a handover and offer my services from the sidelines (a lot of the hard-work has already been done for the campout).

E-mail me at newbrodads@gmail.com and we can chat. Have a think about what Newbros means to our kids and school community. Many hands make light work as you know, so if a few dad’s took it on you could even run it as a committee and lessen the load.

Over & out for now!
Newbros

Supporting Parents and Families

As you are probably aware, the school has a focus on student well-being, utilising resources such as Smiling Minds and if necessary giving students the opportunity to unpack their feelings and emotions with our School Chaplain, Ali Dee.

A lot of the time students are unpacking normal aspects of life, either school based or general life experiences. Sometimes they are going through situations in life that have an impact on them, through no fault of their own. We recognise that this is the same for everyone, parents included.

Relationships Australia provide a number of courses to provide parents with strategies to help support their children and navigate through life as a parent. These courses can be accessed either online or at their West Leederville centre. Please refer to the attached brochures for more information about the courses offered.

Volunteers

We want to thank two Newborough Dads for coming in regularly to help make our Meatball Subs and Pizzas. Here’s a picture of one of the Dad’s in action.

We are going to recommence requesting volunteers through each class year's Parent Rep. Please keep a lookout for an e-mail from your Parent Rep when it is your class year's week to assist. As always, if you have any spare time and wish to assist, please email me at anmeyer18@gmail.com. We are always looking for help Monday / Wednesday / Friday from 9am - 11am & 11am - 1pm. However any time you can spare is very much appreciated.
