Principal’s Introduction

Semester One Thank You Happy Holidays

We have survived and thrived through the most different and difficult semester in schools that I can remember. The COVID-19 Pandemic has impacted on everyone. It would be easy to become complacent and believe the Pandemic is over and we can get back to normal. One only has to look at what is happening in Victoria to see that we still need to be vigilant and that at any time we may need to revert back to some of the restrictions that has protected us from this vile disease. There is no cure or vaccine so we continue to manage and protect.

Whilst still apprehensive it is great that we have been able to re-open the Canteen, Uniform Shop, Nature Playground and playgrounds, run P&C and School Board meetings, can allow parents and visitors back on site (see article below), re-commence assemblies, engage the Newbie Knights Sustainability programs and run excursions and incursions. Of course we won’t be able to catch up on everything we have missed but there are lots to look forward to.

Please continue to follow the hygiene protocols that have been so effective – social distancing (In a practical sense), washing hands, coughing into your elbow and staying home if unwell.

I congratulate our resilient Students, Parents and Staff on the way you have embraced the challenges for this year. We are finding it immensely difficult not being able to run a range of our normal events and activities. I particularly feel for our graduating class who have missed camp and interschool sports. Our Year Sixes love their sports. We are working very hard to ensure they have a great finish to their primary years and hopefully the majority of Graduation activities can go ahead. We also have a few little surprises to boost these experiences.

It is time to stop, take a breath, reflect on the year so far, then re-charge the batteries ready for a fantastic semester two. Now intra-state travel is allowed I hope everyone takes advantage of the break. We certainly have a great deal to be grateful for and a lot to look forward to this year.

Retirements and Replacements

We celebrate and thank two long term staff members who are both retiring this week.

Mrs Robyn Parry has been our Head Cleaner since 2003. Some may be surprised to hear that she has been associated with the school for over 40 years as her children attended Newborough and she was a long term volunteer in the Canteen. Robyn is looking forward to getting up later and enjoying her grandchildren and gardening.

Mrs Marie Lock joined the school as an Early Childhood Education Assistant in 2005. She has worked with a range of fabulous teachers and children. Marie is a talented artist and also enjoys gardening and time with her grandchildren.

We wish both of you a long and happy retirement. Always welcome to drop in and say hello.

Mrs Parry is being replaced by Mr Moneer Markoub who will be our Acting Head Cleaner until we can advertise and fill the position permanently. Mrs Lock will be replaced permanently by Mrs Bec Lee who was on our staff last year in a fixed term position. We welcome both to our school.

New Assembly Timetable

Parent assemblies will commence again in Term Three. We will go with the schedule already in place combining two like year level classes for those that missed out at the end of Term One and for Term Two. This means every class can be involved in an assembly and class representative morning teas be available.

Those students who received a Merit Certificate during the COVID closures will be quickly acknowledged at the first assembly in term three. Citations and certificates have already been presented.

Welcome Back Parents/Carers, Volunteers and Visitors

I am really pleased to be able to announce that Phase Four COVID Restrictions now allow for the return of Parents/Carers, Volunteers and Visitors into the school from the start of Term Three on Tuesday 21st July. It will be different to our COVID Response and previous practices. Like many schools we have used the opportunity to learn and review these practices and procedures for all visitors, including parents/carers, volunteers and general visitors entering the school.

In recent weeks I have spent considerable time proactively seeking feedback, thoughts and ideas from Staff, Parents, Students, P&C and the School Board on how we manage this important aspect of our school in a balanced way that promotes resiliency, focused learners, a capacity for teachers to teacher and staff to support learning and importantly the community engagement aspect that our school is famous for. I have also spoken with Principals of schools in our Churchlands and Ocean Networks.

It is true that there are some quite divergent thoughts, however, there are also some very clear trends and learnings that have been identified that, with some considered changes will improve the engagement and learning opportunities for our students, and enhance the valued support from parents, volunteers and visitors.

Firstly, let us look at a summary of what the surveys and feedback has told us:

Respondents -

Parents/Carers 153 out of a possible 234 (65%)

Staff 30 out of 48 (63%)

Students – Informal conversations. Mainly Middle/Upper primary

* Considerable number of similar responses

What has worked well?

Parents

  • Drop off at the gates has been well organized, smooth and saves a lot of time
  • Students show greater independence
  • Staff greeting and welcoming students – reduced a lot of anxiety
  • Less parking congestion and better traffic movement

Staff

  • Students entering school calmly, independently and much better organized when arriving to class
  • Reduced separation issues for most students – particularly junior years
  • Teacher and support staff preparation much easier – calmer, less rushed
  • Parents more focused and purposeful at parent meetings – little unnecessary social chit-chat

Students

  • Can go into class quickly and be ready
  • Taking responsibility for younger siblings (Like this)
  • School is safe, calm and friendly

Admin

  • Better attendance, greater punctuality reducing ‘latest that interrupt classes
  • We get to meet and greet students and say goodbye
  • Less traffic and noise in the front office

What has not worked well?

Parents

  • *Limited contact with teachers
  • *Difficult to meet other parents – make friends, volunteer in the classroom, canteen, uniform shop etc Keeping that sense of community
  • *Many respondents were pleased with current arrangements and what it to continue as is
  • Congestion around gates and car park (Karrinyup Sports Centre)
  • Having different finishing times for some year levels and having to wait
  • Drop off and pick up in wet weather
  • Parents feeling unwanted – locked out

Staff

  • *Teachers having contact in the morning to quickly share information and in the afternoon to have more extended chats
  • Parents and children doing activities in the classroom before school particularly Kindy and Pre-primary

Students

  • Not seeing their parents and other parents in the school – feels funny
  • Being able to play after school at school (Interesting there was no mention of before school play)
  • Can’t show parents their work/learning and classroom

Admin

  • Wet weather at the gates
  • Some parents’ poor supervision and not moving on quickly causing congestion issues and danger for students around vehicles

What would you like to see?

Parents

  • *Parent access to classrooms/teachers and be able to drop children off at their class
  • *Maintain the current arrangements
  • *Return of some play after school
  • Better parking and traffic arrangements
  • Gates open a little earlier to reduce congestion

Staff

  • *Keep the drop off short and sharp
  • *Kindy parents’ access to classrooms
  • *Gates closed after second siren in the morning (8:40am) – This has really improved punctuality and reduced lateness
  • Parents capacity to meet purposefully with teachers

Students

  • Parents being able to come to class and see the teacher
  • Some play after school

Admin

  • Gates closed and locked during the school day
  • Respect for the rights of staff to work without noise and poor behaviour before and after school when they are with their parents

What issues do you foresee?

Parents

  • *Concerns that if parents cannot enter or restriction are too severe the school may lose its community feel
  • *No issues (A large number of responses)
  • *Parking and traffic movement – accidents
  • *A lot of compliments on how staff/admin have handled COVID and the schools responses (Thank you)
  • Pleasing everyone

Staff

  • Possibility of parent, teacher and student disconnect
  • Some parents adjusting to changes
  • Parents not supervising their children after school – having a chat and not watching and following school and safety rules
  • Poor health and hygiene practices returning and sick children being sent to school

Students

  • *Overall school is great. We are luck compared to other states and countries.
  • Not having interschool sports, camp, assemblies, excursions etc. The year sixes are worried about graduation. (Good news – most of these are planned. Not the camp unfortunately. We have some further fun activities planned for Year 6)
  • Sort of being locked in

Admin

  • Staff and parents accepting the changes

These are the new procedures for next term and into the future.

Nature Playground Committee

Koorlangka Marlak Kadadjiny – (Children’s Bush Learning)

The P&C are putting together a Nature Playground Committee to look and act on what we can do to manage and improve the Nature Playground. This little patch has created so much happiness and joy in its short life. As the Noongar name suggests it is a wonderful place for children to learn in a bush setting. It is a living and changing thing that needs refreshing and renewal to keep and enhance its spark. The learning is about creativity, kindness, appreciation, cooperation, teamwork, sharing, constructing, respect of self, nature and others and of course lots to challenge yourself.

If you would like to be on the Committee please email John Worthy at John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au or P&C President Wes Gregory at Wes.Gregory@iinet.net.au

Respect is earned.
Honesty is appreciated.
Trust is gained.
Loyalty is returned.
RESPECT

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. Reporting to Parents Changes for Semester 1, 2020

On Wednesday 1st July, parents from Pre-primary to Year 6 received their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades. However, due to schooling in Semester 1 2020 has been widely disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, schools are not required to report learning area achievement as grades, or equivalent ratings, for Semester 1 2020.

This means the Overall Learning Area achievement section of the report will be unshaded, and the components for a Learning Area will be marked as “Not Assessed”.

However, teachers will provide a comment for both English and Mathematics based on the evidence of work of what your child has produced this semester. The comment will state whether your child is currently working below, at or above their level standard in the learning area or if there is not enough evidence to make this judgement. However, it is important to note that the evidence teacher’s do have may not be a true indication of student ability due to the disruptions, and neither should be used as a predictor for future achievement as new content, concepts and skills will taught in Semester Two which students will be graded against.

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child is either on a Group or Individual Education Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or is working below year level standard. Teachers are able to meet with parents individually in prearranged meetings without children present or conduct phone interviews. Please email your class teacher to arrange an appointment if needed.

Kindergarten students will receive a portfolio of work along with a Kindergarten Social and Emotional Checklist. These will be delivered hard copy and not electronically for Semester One. In Semester two, Kindergarten students will receive an electronic report.

Reporting to Parents: Semester 1, 2020

Parents will today receive their child’s Semester One reports via email for all Pre-Primary to Year 6 students. Please check your SPAM folder if you have not received the report.

Parents are encouraged to take the time to read, and discuss the report with their child if it is deemed appropriate and make an appointment with their class teacher or specialist teacher if needs be.

As the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP on to a hard drive or their desk top. This ensures you have the report electronically for any of your own needs or enrolment into private high schools.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

In-Term Swimming Program – Weeks One and Two, Term Four

This year’s In-Term Swimming program will be in Weeks One and Two of Term Four: Wednesday 14th October to Friday 23rd October. The swimming lessons will again be at Scarborough Beach Pool and will cost approximately $40-$50 per child. We aim to have the Excursion Advice and Consent form out to parents with the final costings in early Term Three, giving parents hopefully plenty of time and notice to pay this amount. Unfortunately, students will not be able to attend swimming without the full amount being paid.

We encourage any parents who may have difficult in paying for the in-term swimming lessons to contact Sharon Singleton, Manager of Corporate Services, to immediately to develop a Payment Plan.

Newbros

It’s been a while; hopefully everyone is keeping well!

We are looking for a couple of like-minded Dad’s to take over Newbros and keep it going! The last year was a big one (we did 3 camp-outs [1 whole school], a Bingo night, daddy/daughter hair workshops and 2 Bunnings sausage sizzles) and it’s now time for Newbros to be handed over and for someone else (the next generation of Newborough dads perhaps?) to keep it going.

April 2020 was meant to be our next whole School Camp on the oval which obviously got COVID-cancelled. There is interest to host this later in the year but without the offer to take-over Newbros, unfortunately it won’t happen. Should a couple of dads be keen to take over Newbros as your own, I can do a handover and offer my services from the sidelines (a lot of the hard-work has already been done for the campout).

E-mail me at newbrodads@gmail.com and we can chat. Have a think about what Newbros means to our kids and school community. Many hands make light work as you know, so if a few dad’s took it on you could even run it as a committee and lessen the load.

Over & out for now!

We are trialling new ice cream cups (Vanilla Milkshake & Chocolate Mudcake) from Il Gelato for the price of $2.50. This is a local handmade product and is WA Canteen Association approved.

Volunteers

A huge thanks to those who responded to the recent call for volunteers, which included Mum's, Dad's, Grandparents (who don't live locally). Below are some of the happy volunteers with their family members.

Currently we are not using the volunteer roster spreadsheet, however if you do want to volunteer, please email me at anmeyer18@gmail.com. We are always looking for help Monday / Wednesday / Friday from 9am - 11am & 11am - 1pm. However any time you can spare is very much appreciated.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.
