Principal’s Introduction

Container Deposit Scheme

Last week I received some great news. Our school has been successful with an application from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation for the purchase of a trailer, with mesh sides, and garden bags and support frames to collect and store the 10 cents refund for acceptable containers and then transport them to the collection point. The grant is worth $1,636.11.

No doubt the trailer will be very handy for carting sports equipment, camps etc. as well as taking containers to the depot.

The scheme has been on hold due to COVID-19 crisis but looks like it will be operating from October. This will allow us some time to purchase the trailer and bags then set up our collection system at school.

In the mean time I encourage ALL families and associated workplaces to start collecting containers listed on the attached chart ready to bring to school.

Please keep containers at home or your workplace until we have our storage and system set up. So far I have 142 containers stored and ready. One bright Year 3 Math wiz told me that is worth $14.20 and if I got another 8 containers I could get $15.00. Lots of Maths in this!!

All the funds raised from this scheme will be directed back to sustainability activities such as recycling, kitchen gardens, tree planting etc.

Uniform Shop Re-Opening Tuesdays from 8:15am

Thank you to everyone that has embraced the online Uniform Shop via the link below.

http://www.quickcliq.com/

We have had some great feedback from parents telling us how easy it is to use and how it saves them so much time, by avoiding the line at the uniform shop!!

Special thanks to Karen Tucknott, who has done a great job getting all our deliveries out to the students each week.

We hope everyone continues to use www.quickcliq.com for the uniform orders, but we understand sizing can create a little bit of guesswork! So if you need to switch a size or get a refund on an item, no problem! Simply order what you think is correct and feel free to return the unused items to the front office within 5 days of receiving them, with a note of explanation and we will exchange or refund them for you.

For those new to online ordering, www.Quickcliq.com is easy to use, you simply register, enter details for your child(ren), add credit onto your account and then select "Uniforms" from the menu bar. (Or use the canteen feature of course for lunch!). All available stock and sizes can be viewed online, then ordered and paid for in one go. It's quick and simple and your order will be sent directly to your child's class. Deliveries are made to students on Wednesday, for orders made before Monday evening of that same week.

Following protocol for COVID-19 we are now able to accept and sell second hand uniforms again. So please get those donations in! We can also allow registered visitors to the uniform shop. Register in at the front office when you arrive. This will be mainly for second hand uniform purchases. The shop will be open on Tuesday morning from 8.15-8.45am. Visitors will need to register at the front office before attending the uniform shop. If you are bringing your children, they must remain under your care until 8.30am, when the school opens. Please remember that we are a cashless school and payment needs to be made via card.

Thank you for all your support!

Fiona & Miriam

Birthday Cakes for Students

A reminder that we are not allowing the sharing of birthday cakes, presents etc. for birthdays or other celebrations due to the COVID restrictions. It remains too risky.

Gratitude is the healthiest of all emotions.

The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD DURING THE DAY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (eg. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Administration Staff

DEPUTY NEWS

Important Information: Cross Country and Faction Sports Carnival: Term 3 2020

Important dates:

Faction Cross Country event: Wednesday 29th July 2020
Faction Sports Carnival: Friday 4th September 2020

Newborough Primary School will be holding our Faction Cross Country event this year on Wednesday 29th July 2020 and our Faction Sports Carnival on Friday 4th September.

However, as we must comply with the current COVID-19 Government restrictions for school activities, both events will look different to what has traditionally happened at our school over the past few years. The school is still working through changes that will need to be made to comply with the restrictions and to manage the amount of people on school grounds but still allow parents to watch their child participate. We will inform parents of the changes to these events in due course.

Currently, the Ocean Net Schools are discussing the issues that will surround holding interschool cross country and athletics carnivals next term. A decision will be made on this within the next week or so. However, at this stage it appears it will be very unlikely that there will be any interschool events for these two events held next term.

Please watch out for an email soon explaining the changes being made to both of these events. In particular, a Permission Note for students to run the part of the cross country course that is off school grounds (Jackson Avenue and Wilding Street Reserve and the front of the school on Newborough Street). These permission forms will need to be returned for your child to be able to participate in the cross country event.

Please do not hesitate to see me if you have any queries at this stage,

Karen Tucknott
Deputy Prinicpal.

Newborough Primary School: Bring your Teddy to School Fun Day – Friday 19th June 2020

Newborough Primary School will have a Bring your Teddy to School Fun Day on Friday 19th June to help break the long term we have had with all incursions and excursion needing to be cancelled due to COVID-19.

Students will be able to wear comfy winter free dress and bring along their favourite teddy or stuffed toy to school. Classes will be doing fun activities either in their year groups or with buddy classes and in specialist classes. Teachers will inform parents of some of the activities they will be doing on that day through their normal communication platforms.

Kindy Green and Kindy Blue will have their Bring your Teddy to School Fun Day on Wednesday 17th June

Reporting to Parents

Reporting to Parents: Changes for Semester 1, 2020

On Wednesday 1st July, parents from Pre-primary to Year 6 will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades. However, due to schooling in Semester 1 2020 has been widely disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, schools are not required to report learning area achievement as grades, or equivalent ratings, for Semester 1 2020.

This means the Overall Learning Area achievement section of the report will be unshaded, and the components for a Learning Area will be marked as “Not Assessed”.

However, teachers will provide a comment for both English and Mathematics based on the evidence of work of what your child has produced this semester. The comment will state whether your child is currently working below, at or above their level standard in the learning area or if there is not enough evidence to make this judgement. However, it is important to note that the evidence teacher’s do have may not be a true indication of student ability due to the disruptions, and neither should be used as a predictor for future achievement as new content, concepts and skills will taught in Semester Two which students will be graded against.

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child is either on a Group or Individual Education Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or is working below year level standard. Teachers are able to meet with parents individually in prearranged meetings without children present or conduct phone interviews. Please email your class teacher to arrange an appointment if needed.

Kindergarten students will receive a portfolio of work along with a Kindergarten Social and Emotional Checklist. These will be delivered hard copy and not electronically for Semester One. In Semester two, Kindergarten students will receive an electronic report.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2020

As per last year, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Wednesday 1st July 2020. (Week 10, Term 2)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and

parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.

However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Canteen News

Canteen Open

We are so happy to be open again for Term 2. For the time being, all orders are to be placed online via Quickcliq. If you would like to place a Canteen order and have not yet registered, please log on to the link below and follow the instructions.

http://www.quickcliq.com.au/

Menu Changes

Until we can secure more regular volunteers, some of the menu items (such as the Burgers and Meatball Subs) may not be available.

Please refer to the notes updated on Quickcliq to advise if the items are available. If we have sufficient volunteers for a particular day, the menu item will be available.

Shepherd's Pie and slow cooked warming Soups (Chicken & Veg, Pea & Ham, and Pumpkin) are now available for the cooler months.

We are trialling new ice cream cups (Vanilla Milkshake & Chocolate Mudcake) from Il Gelato for the price of $2.50. This is a local handmade product and is WA Canteen Association approved.

Volunteers

We appreciate that life is still returning to normal for many parents and so for this term have not allocated a volunteer week to each year group. Next term however, we will need to revert to doing this so that we can maintain a sufficient level of help each week. A huge thanks those who responded to the recent call for volunteers, which included Mum's, Dad's, Grandparents and a former Newborough Student.

Currently we are not using the volunteer roster spreadsheet, however if you do want to volunteer, please email me at anmeyer18@gmail.com. We are always looking for help Monday / Wednesday / Friday from 9am - 11am & 11am - 1pm. However any time you can spare is very much appreciated.

Canteen Notice Boards

We are refreshing the notice boards outside the Canteen. A big thank you to our Creative Artist, Rhonda Yates, for her great ideas and resources to kick things off.

Uniform Shop

The uniform shop is now completely ONLINE!!

It is so easy to order, simply login to Quickcliq (the same account for your child’s canteen orders) at the link below to place your order and we will get it delivered to your child’s class.

http://www.quickcliq.com.au/

Deliveries will be made on a Wednesday, for orders placed before Monday evening of the same week.

If you have ordered the wrong size and need to exchange something, simply return the unused uniform to the office the next day and send us an email telling us which size you would like to swap it for.

If you have any questions, email us newboroughuniforms@gmail.com and we will help you.

Thanks!
