Principal’s Introduction

Latest Update on COVID-19 Phase 3 Changes

Last Friday the Premier announced that the state would be moving to Phase 3 reduction of restrictions for the COVID – 19 Response from next Monday, 8 June 2020. This includes changes to physical spacing to 2 square metres per person (Students in schools are exempted from this rule) and a maximum of 100 people for indoor settings and 300 people in outdoor settings.

The Department of Education have issued guidelines for phase 3 for schools. This has just been received, 4th June, and will take some time to interpret and consult with key stakeholders and what this means for our school and context.

The following activities have been approved for schools to recommence as long as they adhere to the maximum numbers and social distancing requirements:

  • Approved Specialist Programs
  • Incursion/Excursion
  • PEAC
  • 3rd Party use of school facilities
  • Small assemblies
  • School Libraries
  • IMMS Music Lessons
  • Approved visitors
  • Canteen
  • P&C, School Board and Staff Meetings
  • Interm Swimming
  • Choir

I will inform the school community when and how these activities will recommence after due consideration.

Parents/carers may come onto school grounds to attend pre-arranged meetings and for drop off and pick up purposes, at the gates.

For Newborough PS this means we continue with the current arrangements with the three gates opening at 8:30am for drop off and then locked at 3:10pm (Tuesday 2:40pm) after pick up. Once gates are locked late students and any visitors are required to enter the school through the Front Office.

This has been a very effective strategy managing numbers of adults on the school site and for student punctuality and readiness for learning. Teachers are also appreciative of the freedom to prepare and be ready for student arrival for classes and to be able to meet and plan learning activities without disruption after school. These arrangements will continue until at least the end of Term 2. I will seek feedback from parents and staff and comply with Department guidelines before I make any decision on future changes.

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (e.g. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

An open letter to the teachers and staff of Newborough Primary School

We are writing to you on behalf of the Newborough School community, whom we, as the School Board, have the privilege of representing.

The past few months have been difficult to say the least. The COVID-19 pandemic has turned the world on its head in so many respects, and has impacted on each and every one of us in different ways.

The State Government’s decision to close schools early in Term 1, and the various discussions around remote learning and home schooling for Term 2 would have no doubt caused you all a great deal of anxiety and stress. We can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must have been for you to have to prepare for a full term of online learning at such short notice, and in such stressful circumstances. We’re mindful that you are human beings first and foremost, and you would have been facing the same fears and struggles as the rest of us – all the while, having to prepare to deliver an education to our children in a manner that is completely foreign to you all.

We can appreciate that the State’s subsequent decision to reopen schools for Term 2 no doubt brought mixed emotions to the teaching community. Some of you may have been relieved to be going back to work. Some of you may have felt frustrated at having spent your school holidays preparing for an online learning environment, only to feel like that effort was now wasted. Some of you no doubt felt that schools shouldn’t open at all and that teacher and student health was being exposed to unnecessary risk. Some of you probably felt scared, frustrated and anxious all at the same time.

Regardless of how you felt through this challenging period, from the community’s perspective you have always conducted yourselves in an exemplary and admirable manner. The way in which you’ve collectively accepted the challenge of adapting to the ‘new normal’ with kindness, respect and teamwork, is exemplary and embodies the Newborough Way in every sense. You have brought a spirit of can-do positivity to the school and we can see that spirit being reflected in the smiling and happy faces of our children every day.

On behalf of the Board and the broader Newborough community, we wish to extend to you our sincere appreciation and thanks for your continued efforts through these challenging times. We could not be prouder of your hard work, dedication, and attitude through this period, and we are extremely grateful to have you in our school community.

Under more normal circumstances the Board and the staff would have a get-together where we have a chance to raise a glass and thank you for your efforts in person. Unfortunately, it may be some time before we can do that, however we look forward to this occasion, and in the meantime, we hope you know just how much you are appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Callan Rose
Chairman
Newborough Primary School Board

Playgrounds Shade Shelter Success

I am pleased to advise that the school has been successful obtaining a grant of $20 000 to construct a shade shelter to be located adjacent to the east wall of the school library. The seats and tables that are currently located on the grass in front of the library will be cleaned up and painted then relocated under the new shelter. We will also do up the friendship seats. This structure, predominantly for senior (Year six) students to eat lunch and have their morning tea, will provide much needed shelter for all weather conditions. It will be a nice place for all students, parents and staff at other times of the day.

Classes may wish to work in this area as well. Having the senior students in this location frees space on the verandahs for other students and allows for a much better social interaction. Over time it will be seen as a rite of passage and reward for our graduating group. Given they have had such a challenging final year I would like them to assist with the sanding down and painting of the seats and tables and put a plaque acknowledging this legacy. Something I am sure they will remember and come back to in years to come.

Makuru – Six Noongar Seasons Cold and wet time of the year (fertility season) June - July

Makuru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year come into full swing. Traditionally, this was a good time of the year to move back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing the cold weather, rains and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.

As the waterways and catchments started to fill, people were able to move about their country with ease and thus their food sources changed from sea, estuarine and lake foods to those of the lands in particular the grazing animals such as the kangaroo. As well as a food source, animals provided people with many other things. For example, 'Yongar' or kangaroos not only provided meat but also 'bookas' (animal skin cloaks that were used as the nights became much cooler). Nothing was left; even the bones and sinews were used in the manufacturing of bookas and for hunting tools such as spears.

Makuru is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season. If you look carefully, you might now see pairs of 'Wardongs' (ravens) flying together. You also notice these pairs not making the usual 'ark ark arrrrrk' that these birds are well known for when flying solo. Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of the Black Swan or 'Mali' as they too prepare to nest and breed.

Flowers that will start to emerge include the blues and purples of the Blueberry Lilly (Dianella revoluta) and the Purple Flags (Patersonia occidentalis). As the season comes to a close, you should also start to notice the white flowers of the weeping peppermint (Agonis flexuosa) as the blues start to make way for the white and cream flowers of Djilba.

Classes will be doing fun activities either in their year groups or with buddy classes and in specialist classes. Kindy Green and Kindy Blue will have their Bring your Teddy to School Fun Day on Wednesday 17th June

Reporting to Parents

Reporting to Parents: Changes for Semester 1, 2020

On Wednesday 1st July, parents from Pre-primary to Year 6 will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades. However, due to schooling in Semester 1 2020 has been widely disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, schools are not required to report learning area achievement as grades, or equivalent ratings, for Semester 1 2020.

This means the Overall Learning Area achievement section of the report will be unshaded, and the components for a Learning Area will be marked as “Not Assessed”.

However, teachers will provide a comment for both English and Mathematics based on the evidence of work of what your child has produced this semester. The comment will state whether your child is currently working below, at or above their level standard in the learning area or if there is not enough evidence to make this judgement. However, it is important to note that the evidence teacher’s do have may not be a true indication of student ability due to the disruptions, and neither should be used as a predictor for future achievement as new content, concepts and skills will taught in Semester Two which students will be graded against.

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child is either on a Group or Individual Education Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or is working below year level standard. Teachers are able to meet with parents individually in prearranged meetings without children present or conduct phone interviews. Please email your class teacher to arrange an appointment if needed.

Kindergarten students will receive a portfolio of work along with a Kindergarten Social and Emotional Checklist. These will be delivered hard copy and not electronically for Semester One. In Semester two, Kindergarten students will receive and electronic report.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2020

As per last year, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Wednesday 1st July 2020. (Week 10, Term 2)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.

However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

PBW Mini Assembly - Year 1 Room 10

On Tuesday, 26 March, Year 1 Room 10 hosted a Mini Assembly using Webex. The focus for our Mini Assembly is Kindness and Teamwork.

Two students from our class, Aylah and Lochie were our speakers.

Please click on the link below and watch a little video about how to spread a little bit of kindness and understand the project we have been working on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrSkDX2ELmU

Our class has been very busy showing teamwork in making a token gesture of kindness for every class in the school. These were delivered during this PBW Mini Assembly and during the day. We hope the classrooms treasure these special items and it reminds you all to do random acts of kindness.

Thank you so much,

Year 1 Room 10.

P&C News

Canteen News

We are so happy to be able to announce that the canteen will be re-opening on Monday 25th May (week 5), just in time for a much needed break from the monotony of lunchbox packing!

The canteen provides an important service to our school community, it however can't run effectively without the assistance of parent volunteers. The advice from the Department of Education states that if a canteen is unable to operate without parental assistance, then parents are able to assist with staffing the canteen. Parents will adhere to social distancing where possible, there will be increased cleaning and parents will need to minimise contact with the broader school population. Amanda and our regular volunteers will undertake online COVID training provided by the Canteen Association to ensure that we operate safely and within all guidelines. Amanda will brief all other volunteers at the start of their shift to update them with current advice on safety and hygiene. All volunteers will need to ensure they enter and leave the school via the office and obtain a visitor pass. Amanda will let the admin team know who to expect each day.

We will be needing parents to volunteer to assist in the canteen on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays. This can be for a shorter two hour shift 9-11am or 11-1pm or for the whole four hours if you are available and keen! If you can assist on any day please contact Amanda by email on anmeyer18@gmail.com and let her know what times you are able to help, we can then work out the roster to ensure we are able to open all days. It would be extremely helpful if we could develop a list of volunteers who we could call on with short notice if needed or who could regularly do a shift every 3-4 weeks. If this is you, then please do let Amanda know. If we don't get the support from our parents in regards to volunteering, then we will have no choice but to close the canteen for the remainder of the term. We are not sure that Mr P would be able to cope if this was to occur, his reliance on the canteen is next level...:-)

The canteen may offer a reduced "specials" menu to begin with, please ensure you check the online menu. Amanda will update this regularly, so if an item is not available online then it is not available to order. All orders will need to be placed online, with no envelopes/cash placed in lunch baskets in the classroom. Online orders are placed using Quickcliq (on the link below), registering is super quick and easy. Snack items will still be able to be purchased from the window at recess and lunch.

https://quickcliq.com.au/

We look forward to once again being able to provide our families and staff with this great service. If you have any questions at all please contact either Amanda on the above email or the P&C on newboroughpcsec@gmail.com

Uniform Shop

The uniform shop is now completely ONLINE!!

It is so easy to order, simply login to Quickcliq (the same account for your child’s canteen orders) to place your order and we will get it delivered to your child’s class.
