Principal’s Introduction

Dr Karl Visits NPS Via Skype

Last Wednesday Mrs Farmer and Miss Phillips’ Year 4 and 6 classes were enthralled by Dr Karl Kruszelnicki who answered a broad range of really interesting questions via Skype from Sydney to our newly refurbished Science Laboratory. This session resulted from an offer made by Dr Karl last year when Will and Isla Drysdale, were first in the queue for his WA launch of his latest book at Karrinyup Shopping Centre. They had arrived early and were keen to meet their knowledgeable and very personable, favourite Science hero.

Will and his team got to ask the first question that has been puzzling him for a while. “Why doesn’t lightening, that hits the ocean, spread across the whole ocean?” Dr Karl, as he did for all the questions, gave a very knowledgeable and detailed answer.

Isla and her team followed with their question “How do trees give us oxygen?”

The questions came thick, varied and fast including:

  • Do living things have feelings?
  • What is inside a black hole?
  • Why do we have time?
  • How small is our planet compared to the universe?
  • Can we have tears in outer space?
  • What is the progress on a vaccine for Coronavirus?
  • Why is the Coronavirus so dangerous?
  • How did the Coronavirus start?
  • Can you time travel if you go faster than light?
  • What is the hardest thing ever made?
  • Are you a Scientist and have you had other jobs?
  • What is your middle name? (Dr Karl has 5 middle names!!!)

Dr Karl concluded by saying that he hopes everyone continues to have a curious mind and that this is the first and most crucial part of being a Scientist?

Shortly Dr Karl will be sending our school a selection of his fabulous books. He hopes we set up another Skype session in the future and take up his offer to contact other Scientists around Australia via Skype. The Australian Academy of Science have a database of interesting Scientists we can engage with.

Complaints and Issues Processes

Newborough Primary School prides itself on being responsive and considerate to genuine complaints and issues. Sometimes these might seem rather small and insignificant. Please raise them with teachers, the admin team or me as soon as possible so we can understand and address them in a timely, practical and effective manner.

In most cases we can allay concerns and nip things in the bud.

The school does a formal ‘Complaints Handling Process’ for areas of greater concern. This is detailed on the school’s website and brochures are available in the front office.

School Board

Last Monday our School Board met for the first time in 2020. We thanked departing members Mrs Vicki Tennant (Staff), Mrs Liza Harvey (Community), Mrs Yuliya Novik (Parent and Chair) and Mrs Rebecca Mitchell (Parent). The Board also thanked and acknowledged our retiring inaugural School Patron, Mr Ian Sherborne who has been our Patron for four years. We welcomed returning member Mr Ian Garrett who backfills the vacancy from Mrs Mitchell, new members Mr Cameron Leckey and Mr Jason Davis (Parent) and Ms Sarah Lydon (Staff). The Board still has one Community Representative vacancy that we hope to fill shortly.

The Board will be Chaired by Mr Callan Rose with Mr Leckey as Deputy Chair.

We are currently making adjustments to the School Board component on the website and this year will include our School Patron.

Mrs Liza Harvey has accepted the role of School Patron. Mrs Harvey remains a very strong advocate for Newborough and is delighted to be involved in this role that maintains her involvement with the school.

BUNURU – Noongar Season for February/March

Bunuru is the hottest part of the year with little to no rainfall.

People would stay close to the coast and to reliable water sources due to the drying up of water bodies inland.

Fish were trapped and speared. They made up a large part of the diet and fish bones were a good source of calcium.

Many reptiles including Kurda (goannas) lay their eggs at this time and the Kabart (dugite snake) may be active during long hot days.

“How beautiful a day can be when Kindness touches it.”

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Messages for students during the day

We do appreciate that emergencies sometimes arise and we will always endeavour to deliver urgent messages to students by the end of the day, if needs be. However, please also appreciate that the afternoon pick up time is incredibly busy in the front office and the front office staff cannot leave the office unattended, to deliver non-urgent messages.

Please arrange playdates, afterschool care, etc and advise your child of these arrangements before the start of their school day. We ask that parents and carers only phone to request messages be delivered to their child if it is an absolute emergency as we do not wish to offend any parent/carer by advising we are unable to deliver a non urgent message. If you are running late, please let the front office know, but be assured that it is standard procedure for your child to be directed or brought up to the office after approximately ten minutes’ waiting outside their classroom, on the verandah, and the front office staff will attempt to contact you, if you haven’t already let us know that you’re running late. Please do not instruct your child to wait in other areas of the school or play in the playground, as this is not permitted.

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and ExcursionsNewborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non-payment of future incursions or excursions

Non-payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.

Ripper Reader

Newborough Primary School has successfully run a reading program called ‘Ripper Reader’ for many years. The purpose of the program is to provide children one-on-one practice for their reading. Reading tutors listen to a child read, talk about the book and ask questions. Training is provided for volunteers new to tutoring.

The program usually takes place 15-20 minutes before school starts, however some teachers may need support at other times. To make this vitally important program a success in 2020 we need your help. If you have some time and love reading, consider volunteering for one or more morning.

To volunteer please email Nadine MURRAY: nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au

Student Leaders News

Last Monday we had our Leadership Conference for our Year 6’s. The Year 6’s enjoyed listening to Liza Harvey with her very inspiring speech and also Ocean Heroes who talked about teaching kids with disabilities to surf. After recess we had the opportunity to do team work activities with kids from other schools. The Year 6’s personal favourite was the trollies.

Tuesday, 25 February we had our first Round Table talk with the Year 5’s from Mr Blanch and Mr Freeman’s classrooms. Some of their great ideas were a patio for children who don’t feel like playing at recess and lunch. More bike racks behind the Music and Science rooms. And make the Canteen more colourful and enjoyable for children.

Next Friday, We have our Swimming Carnival for Year 4-6. We have been training hard for the past 4 weeks at Churchlands Senior High School. Good Luck to everyone.

We have chosen our Faction, Music, Science and PBW ( Positive Behaviour Wellbeing) Leaders for 2020. Well Done!

In Week 7, we have our Year 6 Camp for 3 days at Bickley Recreation Camp. We have a lot of fun activities planned for them.

HARMONY DAY – Friday 20th March 2020

Harmony Day is a celebration of inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Harmony Day is held every year on 21st March and this day also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

This year we are inviting all students, staff and parents to wear orange on Friday 20th March as orange is the official Harmony Day colour.

We will also start our Harmony Day with a beautiful whole school song, “We Are”, on the quadrangle. This is not a formal assembly and will only take a few minutes. However, parents are welcome to stay and watch.

Please note that all Year Six students will be on camp during this week and will not participate in Harmony Day at school.

NAPLAN Online 2020

This year, all students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the annual NAPLAN tests online. The assessment window for NAPLAN Online is from Tuesday 12th May to Friday 22th May 2020. Newborough Primary School will be holding a one hour information evening on NAPLAN Online for any interested Year 3 and 5 parents on Monday 23rd March from 6-7pm in the school library. Please do not hesitate to contact either Mr Stenhouse or Miss Tucknott if you have queries in regards to NAPLAN Online 2020.

Wellbeing

Newborough has always had a major focus on the pastoral care of our students. For the last two years we have been involved in a well-being journey to complement our Positive Behaviour program. This year we are implementing the Smiling Minds program and Yogazoo in Schools program. These two programs work together to provide students with the benefits of yoga and mindfulness in helping them to develop skills and strategies to assist them in becoming calm, focussed and emotionally balanced individuals. The program is non spiritual and accommodates students of all backgrounds and religions.

As we move through our journey we will continue to keep you updated via the newsletter about strategies that can be used in the home to compliment what we are doing in school.

Next term we start our Yogazoo incursion, a note will be coming home shortly with details. The benefits on this program include:

  • reducing stress, anxiety and depression
  • encouraging creativity and self confidence
  • enhancing motor skills, balance and coordination
  • improving concentration
  • boosting attention and focus
  • reducing anger and frustration and
  • improving quality of sleep.

We help the strategies and skills that students learn equip with life skills that they continue to draw on.

NewBros Dads Big School Campout

Lock in the weekend of 4th and 5th of April for the next NewBros campout on the school oval. It’s shaping up to be even bigger than last year, so keep your eyes peeled for more info coming home soon on how to get your tickets.

Killerby Estate Wine-Drive

Back by popular demand is the wine fundraiser that we ran last year. Such a great deal on offer for those who like to partake in a cheeky glass of wine. $70.00 for a case of 6 with $20 of each one sold going directly to our school (and Killerby does all the hard work for us). What’s not to love! So please when the order sheets come out, reach out to your friends and family and place a nice big order.

Easter Raffle

We will be having our very popular Easter Raffle again this year.

Notes will be sent out requesting the donation of Easter goodies ie chocolate, Easter craft, mini games, Easter soft toys, Easter gift bags, baskets etc

The success of the raffle is dependent on your kind donation of Easter goodies, so please let’s get the donations rolling into the classrooms.

Notes enclosing Easter raffle tickets will be sent home shortly.

We also have a need for large baskets for presenting the major classroom prizes. If you are a previous winner or just have a stash of large baskets that you don’t want, can you please return them to your class teacher to be re-used.

Many thanks
Jackie and Brigitte

Uniform Shop

New Opening Hours 2020

Starting Tuesday 4th February, we will be open Tuesday afternoons from 2:15pm to 3:00pm.

Exciting News!!!

The Uniform Shop has now made the move to complete ONLINE ORDERING AND PAYMENT via Quickcliq - the system we use for online Canteen orders. It's quick and simple. And you can either request for your order to be sent direct to your child's class (usually on the next Wednesday) or you can still collect on a Tuesday afternoon when the shop will be open for collection, trying sizes, size exchange etc.

http://www.quickcliq.com.au/

All available stock and sizes can be viewed online, then ordered and payed for in one go. This will cut down on double handling, checking that bank transfers have been made and will result in getting your items more quickly. Newborough is now a cashless school so cash will no longer be accepted at the uniform shop.

Quickcliq is easy to use, you just need to register, enter details for your child(ren), add credit onto your account and then select "Uniforms" from the menu bar. Or use the canteen feature of course for lunch!

If you have any difficulty or questions you can contact Fiona and Miriam by email: newboroughuniforms@gmail.com or visit the uniform shop Open on Tuesday afternoons 2:15-3pm

Thanks!

Canteen News

To maintain the output of the Canteen, and to keep the menu fresh and interesting we really need the support of volunteers. Even if it is not your year group's turn to volunteer, and you have time spare (even as a one off), we encourage you to please put your name down on the roster or just pop in when you can.

Pizza

As noted in the last newsletter, we have improved the quality of our pizzas by having our pizza bases supplied and par baked in a wood fired oven by Al Fornetto Pizzeria. We hope the children are enjoying the new product. Below are pictures of the par cooked pizza dough and the various pizzas made with it.

Garden

We are enjoying using the produce coming from the school garden. The fresh herbs are particularly useful in our Mac & Cheese, Pizza and Pasta Sauce.

Canteen Menu

Volunteers

Parent Reps - We will start contacting Parent Reps in advance of your year group's turn to encourage you to find volunteers for the Canteen. We have allowed for two people at each timeslot, however if you can only find one, this is still appreciated.

School Banking

All lower primary kids should have received a 2020 School Banking Program from the Commonwealth Bank, together with a reminder that we bank every Wednesday morning before school in the library (8:10 to 8:40). It’s been great to see some new faces join our banking program already this year and welcome back our regular savers.

We believe the Newborough School Banking program is an important way to teach kids about saving money. If you’re interested in knowing more come and see me for a chat before school on Wednesday. Signing up for an account is easy and I can even get you started straight away with a Dollarmites deposit book and folder.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is at the link below:
