Principal’s Introduction

WELCOME

Welcome to all our new students, their families and all those who have been with us before. What an interesting start we have had. Delightful weather throughout the holidays and then a blast of hot weather to start the school year. We are going to have a fantastic year! It was lovely to see our students back keen and excited about the challenges ahead. We welcome new and returning teaching staff. Mr Blanch returns this year and is with our Year 4/5 group. Mrs Saggers replaces Mrs O’Dea who is on parenting leave with the Year 1’s job sharing with Mrs Balding. Mrs O’Dea We also welcome back Mrs Varcoe who is with Kindy Blue for term one whilst Mrs Anderson is on parenting leave. We have been most fortunate to retain most staff. Mrs Boulos of course retired at the end of last year and is enjoying her change of lifestyle.

Thank you to all parents for your preparation of students in school uniform and the friendly and warm manner everyone bounced back into school with. The staff and I look forward to catching up with old friends and meeting newcomers. Please make yourself known. If you have any queries, good ideas, problems or concerns at any time please let my staff and I know. We are keen to understand and help!

Nearly all students wore the school uniform and a hat to wear out in the sun during the breaks. This is so important as it gives a sense of identity and belonging as well as being most functional. Having clothing, pens, pencils etc. labelled clearly with names is most helpful. The P&C have once again been fantastic with their support running the uniform shop. Many thanks Mrs McCallum and Mrs Lopes with assistance from Mrs Yates at the Uniform Shop team and Mrs Winton and the Booklist team who packed and distributed all the booklists. They all did a brilliant job.

We know that preparing our children for school and settling into good patterns really helps with learning (and sanity at home and school). Please ensure your child (ren) have a substantial breakfast, plenty of sleep and get to school in time to prepare for the day ahead. Every day at school is important. Don’t let TV and electronic devices rule your life. A little time and effort put into these areas now will set up a great year. We remind everyone that our school policy is that any students with mobile communication devices, including mobile phones, are dropped off at the front office before school and picked up after school. The exception to this is the years 4-6students participating in the bring your own devices program.

Class Structure and Teacher Placements

This year our numbers have been not so kind as to allow us to have straight classes across the school. We are bound by industrial agreement that determines recommended numbers for various year groups. The splits are unavoidable. Students in splits still do the curriculum content for their own year level. Every effort has been made to place students to assist them with their learning journey and maintain social interaction with their like year level peers. In my experience splits are really not a problem, it is the quality of the teacher and the support available. We are fortunate to have excellent teachers in all classes.

Mobile Phone Policy

From the commencement of the 2020 school year the Department of Education have implemented the ‘Student Mobile Phones In Public Schools Policy’ that applies to ALL government schools.

This policy states that all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are not permitted to have a mobile phone in their possession during the school day.

For the purpose of this policy, mobile phones includes smart watches, other electronic communication devices, and associated listening accessories, such as, but not limited to, headphones and ear buds.

All communications between parents and students, during school hours, should occur via the school’s administration.

Teachers will discuss this policy with students in class and with parents at their information sessions. Teachers have the option to store devices in their classroom or have students leave them in the front office.

In line with the school’s Behaviour Management Policy:

  • Students found to be in possession – not using (Failed to hand in to the office or class teacher) will be Fast Tracked to the Office as a 1st Major Incident. The consequence is loss of one days recess or lunchtime. Parents are notified by the Administration.
  • Students found in possession and using their mobile phone at school will be Fast Tracked to the Office as a 2nd Major Incident. The consequence being a half day in school suspension. Parents are notified by the Administration.

Arrival/Departure at School

Parents/guardians are reminded that students should not arrive at school before 8:15am. Teachers open classrooms by 8:30am (except Kindy). Students from Years 1- 6 may play a variety of games in the main quadrangle between 8:15 and 8:30am. Only Pre-Primary students use the Pre-Primary playground. Both areas are supervised by the Principal and Deputies. At 8:30am ALL children are directed to move to their classrooms to get ready for the day, including Pre Primary and Kindy.

School commences at 8:40am sharp! Late arrivals need to go to the front office with their parents to sign in and get a late note. If a late student is not accompanied by a parent, the parent will be contacted via automated SMS. Lateness disturbs learning for ALL children.

Our school day ends on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 2.55pm and at 2.30pm on a Tuesday. We appreciate all parents/carers who arrive promptly to pick up their children or who pre-organise student pickup before the start of the school day.

As you are aware, students are allowed to play after school until 4pm, BUT ONLY IF CLOSELY SUPERVISED BY PARENTS OR CARERS (ie within eyesight of the parent/carer). Please note that only Pre Primary students may play in the Pre Primary playground. All other students (ie those without parents or carers on site) are required to leave the school grounds immediately, please. We do not have duty teachers available after school and our playground rules apply both in school and out of school hours for ALL children.

I have asked the cleaners to leave the Junior boys’ and girls’ toilets open until 4:00pm for all students (please do not use the Kindy and/or Pre Primary toilets), after which they are cleaned and locked.

If parents/carers are running late, students are to wait outside their classroom on the verandah and, after approximately ten minutes, staff will direct the students to come to the office where their safety is assured. Once in the office, our front office staff will attempt to contact the relevant parent/carer. Please do not instruct children to wait at the Nature Playground or other areas of the school (including playing unsupervised), as this is not permitted.

School gates are locked promptly at 4:00pm, including the Kindergarten and Pre-primary gates. We ask everyone to vacate school grounds by 4:00pm, including the Kindy and Pre Primary areas, so that staff can prepare all areas for the next day. The Mulberry Tree gate next to the Day care is left unlocked until 6:00pm for the convenience of our families who use these afterschool care facilities, only.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP

For the safety of our children, please do not use the service road off Wilding Street as a pick up and drop off area, at any time. Last year there were a couple of close calls involving students and cars, and it is essential to keep this area clear for our maintenance staff who may attend any time from 6am onwards. This area is clearly sign posted as a No Drop Off or Pick Up Zone, and it’s been disappointing to see that some people are not abiding by this request.

Attendance

Every day at school is important for every child from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our attendance mantra is EVERY CHILD, EVERY DAY AT SCHOOL. This includes being on time and ready to start the school day.

The school and principal does not endorse children’s absences to go on holidays, greeting or saying goodbye to fly in fly out parents, special shopping trips and the like. These are unacceptable excuses that we hear too often. Parents are responsible and legally obliged to ensure their children attend school every day possible. Poor attendance not only severely impacts on your child’s learning but also on other children in your child’s class.

If you are having any difficulty getting your child to school let us know and we will try and help. Sometimes it seems easier to give into a child and keep them home for trivial reasons. This is fraught with short term and long term danger. We have had a lot of success in this area when parents and the school work together. Make no excuses for not attending school.

Department of Education and WA Health Update - Coronavirus

The Department of Education is working with WA Health to monitor and respond to the unfolding international novel coronavirus to take the necessary precautions for students and staff.

Update - Travellers from China

From Saturday (1 February) foreign travellers who have left or passed through mainland China will be denied entry to Australia for two weeks.

Australian citizens, permanent residents and members of their immediate families will be exempt from the ban but are asked to self-isolate for 14 days from their date of departure from China.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has advised Australians not to travel to China. For the latest travel information visit smarttraveller.gov.au

Update - Students who have returned from mainland China (not just Hubei Province)

As of Saturday (1 February 2020), all students arriving out of mainland China (not just Hubei Province) must self-isolate in their home for 14 days after leaving China, other than for seeking medical assistance. They are not able to attend school, school events, day care centres or residential colleges. This also applies to parents/carers, contractors, visitors and volunteers on school sites and at school events.

The 14 day exclusion is a precaution to ensure the safest possible environment for children. After 14 days, if the student has no symptoms they may attend school.

Parents/carers should notify their school that the student will be away for the exclusion period, and confirm the date in which they were last in mainland China.

Students in close contact with a person who has a confirmed case of coronovirus

If a student has been informed by Public Health authorities they are a close contact of a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, irrespective of whether they have developed symptoms, they cannot attend school, school events, day care centres or residential colleges until their local public health unit informs them that it is safe for them to do so. This also applies to parents/carers, contractors, visitors and volunteers on school sites and at school events.

Parents/carers should notify their school, and evidence from the public health authority is required for the student to return to school.

The WA Department of Health has more information on the virus including factsheets for parents in and Mandarin and access to a helpline 1800 300 243

Sustainability (Newbie Knights) Update

Over the holidays our vegie patch has gone berserk! With the perimeter fence protecting the gardens we haven’t been raided and had the damage seen in the past. There is a lot of produce such as pumpkins, egg plants, pomegranates, capsicums and zucchinis ready to harvest. Some going to the canteen and some will go on sale at assemblies so we can fund this years’ planting. I will be revamping the Newbie Knights and sustainability activities later this term when the weather cools a bit.

We are still collecting batteries, plastics and aluminium cans and recycling paper from classrooms.

If you would like to assist with our Vegie Patch please let me know. We need a fair bit of weeding and sorting prior to the children getting back involved. This can be done at any time.

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Messages for students during the day

We do appreciate that emergencies sometimes arise and we will always endeavour to deliver urgent messages to students by the end of the day, if needs be. However, please also appreciate that the afternoon pick up time is incredibly busy in the front office and the front office staff cannot leave the office unattended, to deliver non-urgent messages.

Please arrange playdates, afterschool care, etc and advise your child of these arrangements before the start of their school day. We ask that parents and carers only phone to request messages be delivered to their child if it is an absolute emergency as we do not wish to offend any parent/carer by advising we are unable to deliver a non urgent message. If you are running late, please let the front office know, but be assured that it is standard procedure for your child to be directed or brought up to the office after approximately ten minutes’ waiting outside their classroom, on the verandah, and the front office staff will attempt to contact you, if you haven’t already let us know that you’re running late. Please do not instruct your child to wait in other areas of the school or play in the playground, as this is not permitted.

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and Excursions

Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non-payment of future incursions or excursions

Non-payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.

2020 Voluntary Contributions

Our School Board have approved the Voluntary Contributions and Charges, in line with Department of Education requirements, which will remain at $60 per child for 2020. These were sent home with family representatives last week

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution will remain at $30 per child for 2020

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

HARMONY DAY – Saturday 21st March 2020

Harmony Day is a celebration of inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Harmony Day is held every year on 21st March and this day also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Did you know?

  • Over the last 70 years more than seven and a half million migrants have made Australia their home • Nearly half of Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was
  • People from over 200 countries make up our Australian community and over 300 languages are spoken in our homes
  • Apart from English the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi.

This year we are inviting all students, staff and parents to wear orange on Friday 20th March as orange is the official Harmony Day colour.

We will also start our Harmony Day with a beautiful whole school song, “We Are”, on the quadrangle. This is not a formal assembly and will only take a few minutes. However, parents are welcome to stay and watch.

Please note that all Year Six students will be on camp during this week and will not participate in Harmony Day at school.

NAPLAN Online 2020

This year, all students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the annual NAPLAN tests online. The assessment window for NAPLAN Online is from Tuesday 12th May to Friday 22th May 2020. Newborough Primary School will be holding a one hour information evening on NAPLAN Online for any interested Year 3 and 5 parents on Monday 23rd March from 6-7pm in the school library. Please do not hesitate to contact either Mr Stenhouse or Miss Tucknott if you have queries in regards to NAPLAN Online 2020.

Why do students do NAPLAN?

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

What is assessed?

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. In 2020 most students across Australia will sit NAPLAN online. Feedback in the first year of NAPLAN Online showed that students engaged well with online assessments. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test automatically adapts to a student’s test performance. The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance. Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.

NAPLAN Online is not a test of keyboard skills. There are variations in how fast and well a student can type – just as there are variations in how fast and well a student can write by hand. Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper. To get an idea of what the online assessment looks like, visit the public demonstration site at nap.edu.au How can I help my child prepare? Help your child prepare by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply try their best. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Ensuring students are familiar with using devices, typing on them and navigating through programs are a part of student learning and a requirement of the Australian Curriculum from the first year at school. ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of coaching providers. NAPLAN is about assessing learning progress in literacy and numeracy.

Participation in NAPLAN

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. You should first discuss the use of any disability adjustments for your child with your child’s teacher. A formal exemption may be granted for a student with disability that severely limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Your school principal and your local test administration authority can give you more information on NAPLAN Online disability adjustments or the process required to gain a formal exemption.

How is my child’s performance measured?

Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each assessment. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student has demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level. A NAPLAN individual student report will be issued by your child’s school later in the year. If you do not receive a report, you should contact your child’s school.

How are NAPLAN results used?

  • Students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
  • Teachers use results to better identify students who would benefit from greater challenges or extra support.
  • Schools use results to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
  • School systems use results to review programs and support offered to schools.
  • The community can see average school NAPLAN results at myschool.edu.au

For more information about NAPLAN:

  • contact your local test administration authority at nap.edu.au/TAA
  • visit nap.edu.au

For information about how personal information for NAPLAN is handled by ACARA, visit the link below:

On-Entry Assessments: Pre-Primary Weeks 3-6 Term 1

During weeks 3 – 6 of Term 1 all Pre-primary children will be participating in the Department of Education’s state-wide On-entry Assessment Program.

The purpose of the program is to provide teachers with an opportunity, early in the year, to collect information on the essential literacy and numeracy skills and understandings of each child in their class. This will assist your child’s teacher to develop informed and intentional play-based teaching programs, designed to reflect individual needs and foster each child’s learning.

Some assessment tasks can be included in the daily teaching program and some will be carried out one-to-one, in a quiet area. This will provide your child and their teacher with valuable time together, as well as give the teacher the opportunity to observe the behaviours and processes your child uses in responding to questions.

Further information can also be found on the On-entry Assessment Program website at the following address.

http://det.wa.edu.au/educationalmeasurement/detcms/navigation/on-entry/information-for-parents/

Further information in regards to On-entry will go home in Week 2 of this term.

Uniform Shop

New Opening Hours 2020

Starting Tuesday 4th February, we will be open Tuesday afternoons from 2:15pm to 3:00pm.

Welcome

Welcome back to school! The uniform shop has already been very busy this year with lots of parents coming through our doors.

You might have noticed a bit of a change and we’d like to introduce ourselves, we are Miriam and Fiona. We are the new volunteer parents running the uniform shop.

Huge thanks to Rhonda Yates for all her hard work running the uniform shop before us, she has done such a great job.

We are still learning so please be patient, but hopefully we will having it running as smoothly as Rhonda had it soon enough!

We are in the process of setting up an online shop, using the same ordering system/website as the canteen (Quickcliq) so keep an eye out for that update. Once it is live, when you login to Quickcliq, a ‘uniform’ tab will appear and you can order directly from the website and have your order delivered to your child’s class.

Come say hello on Tuesday afternoons or you can email through orders (newboroughuniforms@gmail.com) and have them delivered to your child’s class after payment is received to the P&C account on the order form.

Thanks!

Canteen News

New Items

This term we are going to be trying new items on the menu, muffins, bliss balls, jelly & yoghurt cups and more. Keep an eye out on Quickcliq, and the whiteboard outside the Canteen for notice of when they are on sale.

Canteen Menu

Pizza

We have improved the quality of our pizzas by having our pizza bases supplied and par baked in a wood fired oven by Alfornetto Pizzeria. We will need to increase the cost of the pizza by 50c but we think the taste is worth it. The size of each slice will also be bigger too. Here's an example of our new Supreme.

Volunteers

We are always on the lookout for volunteers. Last year we had a good response by encouraging volunteers via the Parent Reps of each year group, and so we will do the same this year. You will see that the roster now allows for two people per shift as the orders are ever increasing and this allows us to spread the workload.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is on the link below.
