Principal’s Introduction

Goodbyes and Best Wishes

I would like to take this final opportunity for the year to thank all parents, students, community members and staff for another rewarding year. As usual it has been an action packed and exciting year at Newborough. We have had a huge year culminating with the fabulous Musical ‘Seussical Jr.’ and continuation of the Positive Behaviour Support program or as it has become known ‘The Newborough Way’. The P&C again have been superb with their support of the school with events such as Managing the Booklist packages, Colour Run, Easter raffle, Ride/Walk to School day, Disco, Quiz Night, Newbro Dad’s BIG Camp, Canteen, Uniform shop plus much more.

Whilst there are so many people to thank I would like to single out several who have been absolutely wonderful. Miss Karen Tucknott, Mr Nick Stenhouse, Mrs Sharon Singleton, Ms Kate Tyndall, Mrs D’Alonzo-Barkley and Mrs Wendy Clouston who are fantastic people to work with and do a great job around the Administration area. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful teaching and non-teaching staff at the school.

To Mr Wes Gregory and all the P&C team who work so tirelessly for our school, running all the many parent activities that support our children. To Mrs Yuliya Novik who has lead our School Board admirably. We have recently held elections for retiring Board members Mrs Mr Ian Garrett and Mrs Yuliya Novik. The Board welcomes Mr Cameron Leckey and Mr Jason Davis who were recently elected. One of our long serving and most highly regarded Community representatives, Mrs Liza Harvey has stepped down from the Board due to her increased Parliamentary work. I am pleased to be able to advise that the Board has offered Mrs Harvey the role of Patron for next year. This of course means our current Patron Mr Ian Sherborne finishes his distinguished term as our first Patron. Ian has a been a wonderful support and icon over the last five years. We thank him most sincerely for the time he has given, his wise council and warm approach.

Mrs Julie Boulos recently announced that after 11 years teaching at Newborough PS, she is retiring. Julie requested a quiet exit. She has been a wonderful teacher and great colleague who always had the children’s interest at heart. Her compassion and caring for students and support of staff is renowned. Fortunately, she will remain a close friend of the school as a Relief Teacher.

I am pleased to be able to advise that our teaching staff remains quite stable for 2020. Mrs Megan Saggers, Ms Sarah Lydon and Mrs Kara Varcoe have all been re-appointed. Mr Blanch will be returning after a year on a short term contract at another school.

All the class structures, classroom allocations and student placements have concluded and are under lock and key till we announce these on Friday 31 January next year when parents come to pick up booklists. Classes are not announced any earlier given that late changes are possible.

For all those students, staff and families who are not with us next year please take our very best wishes and appreciation for your contributions to the school. You will always be part of the Newborough family. Keep in touch and know you will be warmly welcomed back as a visitor to our school.

We say goodbye to several staff, graduating Year Sixes and families who have been champions of our school for many years. I encourage parents to make sure there is at least one book, “Reading is Brainfood” is in every Christmas hamper this year. The more we encourage and support reading the better.

School Reopens in 2019

Office staff and Administration commence on Tuesday 28th January 2020 (Monday 27th January is Australia Day Holiday). Teachers resume on Thursday 30th January. Class lists will be posted on classroom doors on Friday 31 January to coincide with Booklist and Uniform Shop. These will be open from 9:00 – 11:00am.

Great Achievements

It was great to hear recently that Manu Aiesi and Luke Matthews have been chosen to represent the Northern Fusion Under 12’s Rugby League team to play up in Karratha next April.

They have been trying out for a month and were named in the squad. It’s a huge tournament played every year. Players from this tournament are then selected for the WA state team which will played in Perth next year. We wish both boys every success.

“So this is Christmas and what have we done? Another year over and a new one just began.”

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and Excursions

Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non payment of future incursions or excursions

Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.

2020 Voluntary Contributions

Our School Board have approved the Voluntary Contributions and Charges, in line with Department of Education requirements, which will remain at $60 per child for 2020. These were sent home with family representatives last week

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution will remain at $30 per child for 2020

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Late Pick up of Students

We have an increasing number of students waiting to be picked up at the end of the school day and more so on Tuesday afternoons.

This is a reminder that school finishes on Tuesday afternoons at 2.30pm.

If you are not here on time to pick up your child on any school day, they are required to present themselves at the school office, where the office staff will then contact their parents.

Please be aware ALL students are required to be supervised by their parents in the playground after school.

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

All students and their parents/care givers are invited to The P&C End of 2019 Celebration Party!

  • Please if bringing water pistols these are not to be used near any of the hired play equipment.
  • No water Balloons
  • Also please and do not forget to bring a change of clothes for the little ones in case they get wet.

Booklist Help

Hi Parents,

The school booklists are a really great fundraiser for our P&C with the added benefit that it saves us all from trawling the aisles of Officeworks with all other Perth parents during the summer holidays! Yay!

However, unfortunately we haven't yet worked out how to get the booklists to pack themselves, so that’s where you may come in... It's actually pretty fun, time goes quickly, and it's a great way to help out and get your volunteering in for 2020!

Booklist Packing Day will be Friday 17th January starting by 9am until we are done

(start time confirmed once we know how many volunteers we have, as we might work in shifts).

We would love lots of help to make it a quick and seamless process. Especially helpful will be those who have assisted before and know the ropes but new volunteers are definitely welcome and needed!

Booklist Pick-Up day will be Friday 31st January 9-11am in the library.

We also require volunteers for this day. This involves checking off student’s names as they collect their bundle of goods.

If you are able to assist, please email Karen Winton (booklist coordinator) as soon as possible.

Canteen News

End of Year

We're ending the year on a very strong note with the last few weeks recording our largest number of orders. We have relied heavily on volunteers to get our orders out on time and we sincerely thank them for their support. We even had two former students come and enjoy the volunteer experience.

Next Year

We have some exciting plans for next year with new additions to the menu, and theme days. If you can spare any time, even an hour, we'd really appreciate your help.

Take Home Meals

Next Year we're going to trial selling Take Home Meals. One Mum has started the process for the end of year holidays by taking four Macaroni Cheese with her so she doesn't have to cook! In her son's words...It's the best Mac & Cheese in the world!

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is on the link below.
