Principal’s Introduction

Newbro Dad’s ‘Big School Camp Out’

Congratulations to Wade Freeman and all the Dads and solo Mums who ventured out on the hottest November day on record, 40.4 Celsius, to camp overnight on Hazlitt Field. The organisation was superb with a range of activities including a movie, Sumo Wrestling, barbecue dinner and breakfast, ice-creams and cooking marshmallows on a fire, with appropriate set up and permissions, and so much more. From all accounts the warm evening had a lovely cool breeze off the ocean and was very pleasant. Like all good camps there were plenty of tales about late nights, talking, torches, lack of sleep and general excitement. In time all these will extend and become legendary. It is wonderful to see our Father figures getting involved with the kids and sharing what it is to be a great Father role model and carer for children. I am sure all the Mums appreciated a little quiet respite at home too, and hopefully did something special for themselves. Well done Newbro Dads!

Recycling Plastics

We now have the set up for collecting all types of plastics at school. The Newbie Knights ‘Recycle Plastics’ team have yellow topped bins placed around the school for all types of plastics. They will sort these plastics into different categories ready to be recycled where possible. Please do not send home waste plastics to school, just plastics that children may bring normally to school.

We also have a Greenbatch bin, in the open classroom of the Sustainability shed, and collection station bag near the Uniform Shop set up for the collection of category 1 and 2 plastics and aluminium cans. There is a can crusher that children have already shown delight in squashing aluminium cans located near at both stations. Unfortunately, the only plastics we can currently recycle are categories 1 and 2. Greenbatch collect these categories from us and are recycling them to make plastic filament for 3-D printers. We get credits back for this for the purchase of a 3-D printer and filament in the future. I encourage all parents to look at the charts with their children and talk about what types of plastics are recyclable and start collecting and depositing at school.

We also hope to be a collection point for the 10 cents a bottle return program that will commence next year. If we can get this going the monies raised will go directly back to our various Sustainability programs. Hopefully this will not only help educate us on Sustainable practices but will help financially sustain these programs as well.

We encourage all families to reduce the amount of plastics by using alternatives and reusing where possible. Looking at children’s lunchboxes many families are already doing this.

Landcare Grant

I am pleased to advise that our school has been successful obtaining a Junior Landcare Grant for $1000 for a new worm farm. Our old worm farm located in a converted fridge in the old gardening shed compound has seen better days. It rusted out at the bottom and is not in the best shape. We still have some healthy worms and they are well fed from our canteen food leftovers. The school also has a round plastic worm farm in the Science room. This is going gang busters with regular canteen and food scraps. The Pre-primary children have been studying worms as part of their Life and Living Science program with Mrs Metcalf.

We are collecting lots of worm juice for sale at assemblies or you can put in an order. The worm juice is excellent for vegies and indoor plants. It doesn’t smell and really helps plants grow. Email me if you wish to put in an order and I’ll pass it onto the Food Recycle team.

If all goes to plan, we should have a new fridge worm farm set up near the Vegie Patch early next year.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Late Pick up of Students

We have an increasing number of students waiting to be picked up at the end of the school day and more so on Tuesday afternoons.

This is a reminder that school finishes on Tuesday afternoons at 2.30pm.

If you are not here on time to pick up your child on any school day, they are required to present themselves at the school office, where the office staff will then contact their parents.

Please be aware ALL students are required to be supervised by their parents in the playground after school.

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

Reporting to Parents

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2019

As per last semester, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 16th December 2019 (Week 10, Term 4)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please. If you have already done this, this information will automatically be saved for this semester.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Australia- wide Outdoor Classroom Day – Pre Primary

On Thursday 8th November, the Pre-primary classes took part in the Australia- wide Outdoor Classroom Day initiative. We had a lot of fun doing some structured activities, such as classification of the natural environment, capacity with the water trolley, a nature hunt with magnifying glasses, planting little seedlings and dying mud with different colours. And lots of great free play with our friends in both classes.

Booklist Help

Hi Parents,

The school booklists are a really great fundraiser for our P&C with the added benefit that it saves us all from trawling the aisles of Officeworks with all other Perth parents during the summer holidays! Yay!

However, unfortunately we haven't yet worked out how to get the booklists to pack themselves, so thats where you may come in... It's actually pretty fun, time goes quickly, and it's a great way to help out and get your volunteering in for 2020!

Booklist Packing Day will be Friday 17th January starting by 9am until we are done

(start time confirmed once we know how many volunteers we have, as we might work in shifts).

We would love lots of help to make it a quick and seamless process. Especially helpful will be those who have assisted before and know the ropes but new volunteers are definitely welcome and needed!

Booklist Pick-Up day will be Friday 31st January 9-11am in the library.

We also require volunteers for this day. This involves checking off students names as they collect their bundle of goods.

If you are able to assist please email Karen Winton (booklist co-ordinator) as soon as possible.

Uniform Shop

Why not beat the rush and buy your 2020 uniforms now?

The shop is only open for 4 more Tuesdays as our last day is Tuesday 10th December. We are also open 9am-11am Friday 31st January 2020. This day is extremely busy with long queues but if you pre-order and pay via bank deposit before the end of January, you can skip the queue by collecting your uniform order along with your books.

Volunteers

Without our volunteers the uniform shop cannot run so please help if you can. Enquiries to newboroughuniforms@gmail.com

Uniform Opening Hours

Uniform shop is open Tuesdays 8 - 845 am. Alternatively you can pay via bank deposit into the P&C account and email me your order. I’ll deliver the order to your child’s classroom.

For out of hours, please email through your order and it will be delivered to class after payment is received to the P& C account. newboroughuniforms@gmail.com.

Canteen News

End of Term Sausage Sizzle - Wednesday 18th December

We are looking forward to ending the year with a Sausage Sizzle on Wednesday 18th December (the second last day of Term). This will be the last day that the Canteen is open for this year. No other hot food will be available on this day, however the rest of the menu will be available. Please refer to the QuickCliq website for more information as all orders must be placed online.

Help Desperately Needed

The number of Canteen orders are ever increasing . Thank you to the Year 6 and Pre-Primary Parents and Grandparents for helping us on your rostered weeks. A special thanks goes to our resident volunteer Frank (who usually helps out in the garden) for putting his Italian cooking skills to much needed use in the Canteen.

We are always in need of any assistance parents/grandparents can provide. Even if you have an hour to spare we'd very much appreciate your time. It's a nice environment, no experience necessary and you'll be well supported so there's no need to feel anxious.

New Term 4 Menu

Attached is the new menu for Term 4. We are going to trial some new snacks this term (eg. Vegie Fritters, Fruit and Museli Yoghurt Cups, Apple Pies, and more). Children will be able to purchase these over the counter and if popular they will be added to Quickcliq for ordering.

There has been a slight price increase to the cost of the 'Extra Burger' for our Monday special. We endeavour to keep prices as low as possible, however from time to time we need to adjust them.

Amanda Meyer
Canteen Manager

School Banking

Over $300 raised through School Banking!

Thanks to the fantastic efforts of our students we are on track to raise well over $300 for our school through the School Banking Program. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

Saving regularly is an important habit to get into - whether you're saving a little or a lot. Keep up the great work and remember, School Banking day is every Wednesday from 8:10am in the library.

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is on the link below.
