Principal’s Introduction
Term 4 Welcome Back
Welcome back everyone. It’s great to be back at school for another exciting term. We start the Term with two weeks of Interm Swimming at the new Scarborough Beach Pool. It is really pleasing to be able to use our local pool, one that many children and families use. Thank you to parents for your support with forms, payments and having your child(ren) well organised. Also to Miss Tucknott and staff for your organisation and support. There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes for such an activity. The children have been very well prepared and are quite excited as I write this and they head off on their first day.
Shortly teachers will be conducting a varitey of tests to see how much students have progressed this year. A major highlight for this Term will be the Years 3-6 Musical called “Seussical’ that will culminate with performances at the Chrchlands SHS Concert Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday the 3rd and 4th of December. I suggest everyone get in quickly when ticketing goes on sale. We also have all of our usual end of year events such as Kindy Expo, Year 6 Graduation, Years PP-5 Awards presentation, Volunteer Morning Tea and much more.
Japanese Typhoon Hagibis
We wish all our families who were stranded in Japan or who have connections with Japan a safe return to Australia and hope that the Typhoon Hagibis has not caused too much damage or stress for you. Our thoughts and best wishes are withyou and the Japanese nation.
World Teachers’ Day Friday 25th October
This Friday we celebrate World Teachers’ Day. I hope you will spend a moment of thought and make an opportunity to simply thank your child’s teacher. The most rewarding and gratifying thing for a teacher is to hear they have helped a child.
Many will have heard me say that this is collectively the best group of Teachers I have worked with in my career as a Principal for 27 years and a Class Teacher for a further 11. Our Teachers, indeed this staff, are focussed on every child’s learning and wellbeing. Teaching really is hard work. There is a lot of organisation and preparation done outside regular instruction hours during evenings, weekends, before and after school and in holiday periods. We love and think constantly about what we can do for all our students and the profession as whole.
Student Placements for 2020
If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you please let us know in the office. This will assist us with planning for 2020.
As is always the case during Term 4, Newborough PS’s class organisation for the following year takes place. A number of considerations are taken into account based on improving student performance. These include: staffing numbers, resourcing, recommended class sizes, a balance of academic abilities within each class, the need to evenly distribute students with special needs (academically, socially and behaviourally), an equitable distribution of gender, the ability to work independently if placed in a multi-age class. In 2018 and 2019 we were able to make straight classes throughout the school.
This is quite unusual and was the result of some luck with student numbers and agreements with teachers. Whilst we will try to have straight classes it simply may not be possible in some areas each year.
If you wish to communicate to me your child’s special needs or considerations, please present your correspondence to the Principal via the office marked “Private and Confidential” by Friday 22nd November (Week 6). You may wish to email your correspondence to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au Please note, this information will be considered when placing your child, however, all parent preferences may not be facilitated. Requesting a particular teacher will not be considered. Only sound educational reasons will be considered. This information will be added to the data we already have.
The placement of children and the make-up of classes is made in consultation with teachers. It is not a parent decision. Every child is equally important. The final decision for placements rests with the Principal. If you have any queries or would like to discuss this, please contact me to make an appointment.
It is unlikely that the structure of classes, their location and teacher will be presented at the end of this year. With our numbers constantly fluctuating it would be unfair to announce classes this year and then restructure when students return. Classes will be posted on classroom doors when you pick up your booklist items at the start of 2020.
WA Massed Choir
Newborough’s Senior Choir students performed brilliantly on the final evening of the series of nine nights for the WA Massed Choir Festival held on Friday evening of the last day of Term on 27th September. Not only did our Choir perform so well we featured strongly with Skye van der Meer as one of the outstanding comperes throughout the night. Skye spoke beautifully and confidently. Jude Shen opened the concert with a soloist performance. Jude sang delightfully setting the performance tone for the evening. Having two students selected from all the participating schools is a real honour and testament to our talented group. It was a wonderful concert with the massed choir, comprising nine schools, singing a medley of songs and engaging in some spectacular actions that delighted the audience. The lovely part of this event was that all the schools worked so well together lead by conductors Mary-Anne Goyder and Mirelle Hopwood. Thank you to Mrs Snelson and all the parents and families who helped prepare the children and support them. What a great way to end the term!
School Board Nominations
Are you interested in contributing to the governance of Newborough Primary School as a parent/legal guardian representative on the School Board? For next year we have two vacancies.
Current members of the Board who have completed their term are welcome to re-apply. Should there be more nominations than the vacant positions all parents/guardians will be offered the opportunity to vote. Candidates will then be asked to provide a 250-word brief to include on the voting slip. Members of the Board may hold office for a term not exceeding three years. New members of the Board will be offered training and will have a mentor allocated to assist with induction onto the Board. You can find detailed information about the School Board on our school website under the ‘Our School’ tag.
http://www.newboroughps.wa.edu.au/our-school/
If you are interested email or supply in writing your expression of interest (Not your 250 word brief at this stage) to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au by 3:00pm, Monday 1st November 2019.

Secondary Gifted and Talented Applications Year Five for 2021
The Department of Education are promoting Gifted and Talented selective entrance programs for current (2019) year five students who will be entering secondary school in 2021.
Congratulations Finn
Congratulations to Year Six student Finn Bald who recently represented Western Australia in the National Junior Wrestling championships in Brisbane. Finn won gold in his weight/age category. We are all very proud of Finn who was keenly supported by his Mum, Dad, sister and Coach, Alan Landy, pictured with Finn in the WA colours.
To get to this standard Finn showed tremendous dedication and commitment to his training and weight management to stay in the 73-kilogram category. He will now represent Australia in the same category in March next year in Singapore.
Finn started wrestling three years ago. He said was thrilled to achieve the goals he set for himself and would like to go as far as he can in his chosen sport. We will watch his progress keenly and wish him every success. Well done Finn. Aussie and Newborough Champ!!

Visitors to the school
If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.
Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED
Payment of Incursions and Excursions
Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.
If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.
Non payment of future incursions or excursions
Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.
2019 Voluntary Contributions
Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.
While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.
- Reading Resources
- Mathematics Resources
- Art/Craft
- Technology
Total Contribution $60
The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.
If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.
Absentees
Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

Email: |
|
Phone: |

Reporting to Parents
Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 2, 2019
As per last semester, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 2 school report via email on Monday 16th December 2019 (Week 10, Term 4)
The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:
- timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
- administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
- an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
- parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.
However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.
To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.
We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please. If you have already done this, this information will automatically be saved for this semester.
Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

New Term 4 Menu
Attached is the new menu for Term 4. We are going to trial some new snacks this term (eg. Vegie Fritters, Fruit and Museli Yoghurt Cups, Apple Pies, and more). Children will be able to purchase these over the counter and if popular they will be added to Quickcliq for ordering.
There has been a slight price increase to the cost of the 'Extra Burger' for our Monday special. We endeavour to keep prices as low as possible, however from time to time we need to adjust them.
Newbie Knights Garden
We are enjoying using the fresh produce from the garden. The snow peas have been added to Chicken Fried Rice and Vegie Sticks, our new Vegie Fritters will contain the broccoli, and carrot.
Volunteers
We are always in need of any assistance parents/grandparents can provide. Even if you have an hour to spare we'd very much appreciate your time. It's a fun environment, no experience necessary and you'll be well supported so there's no need to feel anxious.

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is www.safetyhousewa.org.au
