Principal’s Introduction

Holiday Arrangements

On behalf of all the staff I wish everyone a very safe and enjoyable break. Hopefully the weather is good and everyone can enjoy some fun and recovery time for those who have been ill. Don’t forget the Perth Royal Show. I’ll be going.

This has been another busy term culminating with two fantastic events that really shows the uniqueness of Newborough PS.

Firstly the team work efforts of our Interschool Athletics team who battled hard all day. Whilst we didn’t win the points our team did very well and performed with distinction with spirit and sportsmanship. Ms William’s was so proud of everyone in the team who gave their whole efforts, performing brilliantly on the day. It was lovely to hear that our school values shone through with terrific sportsmanship and team spirit.

Thank you to all the staff and parents who assisted, parents and friends who cheered so loudly and long.

The second final Term highlight was the wonderful Year 5 and 6 Enterprise Fete with students planning, organising and managing and using interpersonal skills through a broad range of really interesting stalls spaced all around the quadrangle. There was a lot of excitement from Kindy upwards as students visited stalls, played games and activities and helped raise funds for our graduating students. This year the fete raised $2 711.60. All those coins kept the office ladies busy and ensured they didn’t need to go to the gym for weight lifting.

We all look forward to the Sustainability Afternoon Tea at the new Sustainability Shed on Thursday 26th September from 3:00-4:00pm. It should be lots of fun.

The school office re-opens on Monday 14th October. All staff will be participating in a range of School Development activities including Smiling Minds Wellbeing and Term 4.

Students Return on Tuesday 15th October.

Rugby Union Champs

Congratulations to Nathan Du Plooy from Mr Freeman’s Year 5 class who captained his Rugby Union West Scarborough Under 10 Team to a Grand Final victory against Rockingham Rivals. This was his first year playing and his coaches are very impressed with him. They selected him as captain for the last 7 matches and noticed his leadership abilities.

Nathan stated that his father encouraged him to play Rugby Union. He wasn’t so sure at first but has grown to love the game and has made many good friends. He would like to one day play Rugby professionally. This school has quite a connection with Rugby with current and former Dad’s playing for the Western Force and the Wallabies who are currently at the World Championships.

Well done Nathan. Keep working hard to achieve your dream.

“It’s amazing what we can accomplish when we’re in it together.”

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and Excursions

Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non payment of future incursions or excursions

2019 Kindy Students to re-enrol for Pre Primary 2020

All Kindy students are required to re enrol for Pre Primary, their first year of compulsory schooling. Parents/Guardians will also need to provide their child’s latest immunisation records and two copies of proof of residence with their Application to Enrol form.

Letters from Mr Worthy explaining these requirements have been sent home with each Kindy student and must be returned to the front office before Friday 18 October,2019.

If you wish to advise that your child won’t be returning to Newborough Primary School for PP, we ask that you notify the school in writing to the following email address :

Year 6 Transition Program

As part of our high school transition program for Year 6s we are holding a parent information session on Tuesday, 22nd October from 6:00pm (Week 2, Term 4) The session will run for approximately an hour and will be held in Room 16 (Ms Phillips room).

The session will cover:

  • what we are doing to prepare students academically, organisationally, socially and emotionally for high school
  • feedback from feeder high schools
  • feedback from past students
  • things parents can do to support transition to high school

To start this session, we will ask you to write a note of encouragement directly to your child that they can read when they are having a bad day so you may like to prepare this beforehand. We will provide cards to write this message on at the session.

This is a valuable session for parents to attend and is the first time this has been offered at Newborough. We value your insights and contributions to establish a strong and supportive transition program for our students. We will be asking for written feedback at the end of the session.

2019 Voluntary Contributions

Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.

If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

IN-TERM SWIMMING LESSONS – WEEKS ONE AND TWO, TERM FOUR

The In-term Swimming lessons are in Weeks One and Two of Term Four. While this may sound like it is still weeks away (and it is), we need to have the In-term swimming completely organised by the end of this term (Wednesday 25th September).

The Excursion Advice Form has been sent home for all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 but is also on the Newborough Primary School website in case it is squashed at the bottom of your child’s school bag, along with soggy sandwiches .

The final date for payment for swimming lessons is YESTERDAY, Wednesday 25th September – Week 10 of this term.

The cost per child is $41. The payment for swimming must be paid in total by this date Wednesday 25th September for students to be able to attend. (No pay, no go!)

The In-term swimming program is ONLY eight days long. To be of benefit, students must participate in all eight days. It is essential that payment is made this term.

The school will not be accepting pro-rata payment for parents of students who only participate in a few days of the swimming lessons due to holidays or illness.

As the In-Term swimming lessons provide essential swimming skills and life skills for our students, we expect all students to participate in the program.

However, if your child/ren are not going to be participating in the In-term swimming program, it is also essential that your email newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au to state that your child is not participating in the program and the reasons why. Can you please inform the school ASAP if this is the case.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries about swimming lessons next term.

KINDY CAFÉ

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all families for your support of our highly successful Kindy Café, held at the Newborough sports carnival. We really appreciate all of the contributions made by our Kindy families and the support of the school community in once again making the Kindy Cafe such a great success.

This year we raised $727, which is an outstanding achievement.

Special thanks to the Madden family for the generous loan of their shade shelter and to our tireless ‘band of helpers’ who worked hard to make it such a success. Great ‘Teamwork” everyone!

Many, many thanks to Jess and Ben Boyce from Perth Property Signs and parents of Harvey and Lachie Boyce, for their very generous donation of a beautiful new Kindy café sign. Our Kindy Café will look fantastic for years to come!

World Mental Health Day

FROM THE SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST:

World Mental Health Day is commemorated on 10th of October each year, with Western Australia holding Mental Health Week from 6 to 12 October.

This year’s global theme is to raise awareness around suicide prevention, and the role each of us can play to prevent suicide.

The Western Australian Association for Mental Health (WAAMH) has provided a range of useful resources to help us work towards improving or maintaining wellbeing, as well as to support others in our families and communities.

STEAM WEEK

STEAM WEEK OPEN SCIENCE LAB

Firstly, I would like to thank all the parents that were able to make it along to their child’s science lesson, during Newborough’s STEAM Week Open Lab sessions. I got lots of lovely feedback from parents saying that they learned a lot! I loved watching the interactions between students and parents during the activities. I am sure it helped the children to learn a lot too.

The Pre-Primary to Year 2 students learned about the Moon and its features, the first Moon landing, and why astronauts need to wear protective clothing in Space. The Year 3 & 4 students explored how micro-gravity affects astronauts who live and work in deep Space. Their team assignment was to choose a challenge and create a design solution for it. Years 5 & 6 learned about the European Space Agency’s future plans for a ‘Moon Village’. In teams, students identified the needs of human beings and the challenges to meet these in Space. They applied this knowledge to engineer their own designs for a potential ‘Moon Village’.

Here are some images of the Pre-Primary students and their parents making play-dough Moons, and using small stones to mimic the craters on the Moons’ surfaces.

Newbie Knights Garden

We welcomed our first harvest of vegies from the Newbie Knights garden during the past fortnight. We have already included some of the produce in our pasta sauce and added them to Vegie Stick orders. Look out for Vegie Fritters on sale over the counter, and available to be ordered next term.

New Term 4 Menu

As the weather heats up, we're looking for new and fresh ideas (for Recess and Lunch) to add to the Term 4 menu. If you would like the opportunity to contribute, please email me your idea or recipe to newborough.canteen.manager1@gmail.com.

Volunteers

We are always in need of any assistance parents/grandparents can provide. We'd particularly like to thank one Pre-Primary Grandmother who caught two buses and a train and worked a double shift.

Even if you have an hour to spare we'd very much appreciate your time. It's a fun environment, no experience necessary and you'll be well supported so there's no need to feel anxious.

School Banking

One of the great things about school banking is that it’s designed to reward regular savers. It doesn’t matter how much the kids deposit – what’s important is making saving a regular part of their weekly routine. If your child hasn’t banked in a while, pop in next Wednesday to check how many tokens they’ve already earnt (tokens don’t expire each year). This term we have 8 rewards to choose from with new goodies added every term.

And if the kids need any more motivation to save – it’s worth reminding them they earn a bonus 1.8% interest on their account (on top of their standard 0.5% interest) if they make at least one deposit and no withdrawals each calendar month.

See you before school next Wednesday in the library.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is on the link below.
