Principal’s Introduction
Newborough Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to Ms Williams and all staff, parent helpers/supporters and students on a fabulous athletics carnival last Tuesday and Friday. Whilst the weather did its best to be disruptive early in the week we were fortunate to be able to run the jumps and throws without any rain. Friday was delightful. The highlight of both days was the efforts of all students to do their very best. It was great to see the competitive spirit and the heartening sportsmanship after events. As the Chief Judge I got see how keen place getters were to acknowledge competitors and terrific spirit returned in congratulations to the winners. On occasions when things didn’t quite go right there was genuine concern and kindness shown. Our Patron Mr Sherborne commented to me about this at the carnival. It was lovely to hear how complimentary staff in bays spoke about the behaviour and engagement of the children on what is a long day. Mark Blatchford and Matt Gaunt certainly got the spirit and cheering going with tireless efforts on the PA.
For me one of the highlights of the carnival was how staff got behind Ms Williams in helping prepare the children and making sure the competition went really well. On Friday all staff came early and helped set up the shelters, got the Kindy Café going, put all the final touches in place before getting the very excited students into the bays. The work of all staff in the bays, marshalling, starting, keeping scores, running the front office, problem solving and of course overseeing the whole carnival was outstanding. A really great team effort. We had tremendous support from our dedicated parent group helping with place judging, marshalling the winners, handing out ribbons, running the Kindy Café (That raised an amazing $727.40 towards new Kindy play equipment), packing and carrying equipment and of course the most sensational Sausage Sizzle that catered for nearly the whole school judging by the queues.
We now look forward to the Interschool Athletics Carnival to be held next week on Wednesday 18th and Friday 20th September at Deanmore PS. Ms Williams will send home notes to the competitors shortly.
Open Board Meeting
The School Board will be holding an ‘Open Meeting’ on Monday 16th September at 7:00pm in the Library (Entry via the Kindy/Daycare gate) for any school community member, including staff, who would like to know about the operations of the Board. The ‘Open Meeting’ is a regular meeting that will include reports on the last years’ actions from the Board Chair, Ms Yuliya Novik and from the Principal, John Worthy. The focus will be on our Wellbeing Initiative and Technology to Support learning. The meeting will include an open forum at which participants can share ideas, raise concerns and have discussion. This section is restricted to the responsibilities of the Board.
‘Be You' Well Being Survey Summary and Update
The 'Be You' Teacher, Children and Family survey that was conducted in Semester 1 this year has highlighted a general consensus of the importance of mental health and wellbeing for young people. Our student results reveal a belief that both their parents and teachers want them to be the best that they can be. Encouragingly these results also indicate the positive impact of our PBS program in that our students believe that teachers encourage them to treat everyone with respect and to take on new challenges. As a result of the staff survey results, we will be reviewing processes such as critical incidents. To support the promotion of wellbeing in 2020, we are excited to implement Mindfulness as the beginning of a journey towards further developing a culture of positive behaviour, wellbeing and growth mindset at Newborough Primary School. We would like to again thank all for their participation in guiding decision making to continue to create a school culture where positive behaviour and wellbeing are valued and can flourish.
Stranger Danger
Following my email alert sent to all parents after an incident when parents were leaving the Athletics Carnival on Friday I have reminded all the children in Years Pre-Primary to Year 6 about the importance of being vigilant and responsive to safety, especially with strangers. We talk to the children about being with or near ‘responsible adult’, someone their parents know and trust. This could include parents, teachers and school staff, police and those in authority. If children feel unsafe they need to immediately go to a ‘responsible person’ and report their concerns.
Here are some suggestions to help your children stay safe:
- always travel in a group
- walk on the right hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic
- wherever possible, leave space between you and the roadway
- stay in areas that are well lit
- stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres)
- be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably
- if you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number
- if a passing car stops nearby, never get too close
- run from a situation if you feel at risk
- give this advice to your brothers and sisters, especially if they are younger
- report suspicious behaviour to your parents, school and the police
- if you can get it safely, try to photograph or remember the number plate of the car
- report numbers plates of cars and the clothing or distinguishing features of individuals to police.
You can call 13 14 44 to report an incident to WA Police (only use 000 in an emergency) or 1800 333 000 to reach Crime Stoppers.
To get the latest community safety information from police, visit WA Police on Facebook www.facebook.com/WA.Police or online at www.police.wa.gov.au.
Wonder of Waste Challenge
The City of Stirling are running an online quiz competition promoting waste and recycling. It’s a great little quiz that can easily be done from home. There are eight questions about the use of the three coloured bins. I encourage every student to enter from home.

Long Table Afternoon Tea
The P&C is hosting a long table afternoon tea to celebrate the end of term! Come along for a play, a chat, and some yummy afternoon tea. This year the theme is ZERO WASTE and our aim is to generate as little rubbish as possible. There will be no disposable items and everyone is asked to BRING YOUR OWN plate and cup and pay $2 for the delicious, home-baked afternoon tea provided. Each BYO earns a ticket into the draw to win a fabulous bee and bug hotel for your garden. Every student can also contribute an idea for our SMALL STEPS FOR SUSTAINABILITY display, and Mr Worthy will pick the 2 best ideas to win some funky, reusable food wraps and straws.
Any questions? Ask alyssag@iinet.net.au

Visitors to the school
If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. 2019 Voluntary Contributions
Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.

Total Contribution $60
The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.
If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.

IN-TERM SWIMMING LESSONS – WEEKS ONE AND TWO, TERM FOUR
The In-term Swimming lessons are in Weeks One and Two of Term Four. While this may sound like it is still weeks away (and it is), we need to have the In-term swimming completely organised by the end of this term (Wednesday 25th September).
The Excursion Advice Form has been sent home for all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 but is also on the Newborough Primary School website in case it is squashed at the bottom of your child’s school bag, along with soggy sandwiches.
The final date for payment for swimming lessons is Wednesday 25th September – Week 10 of this term.
The cost per child is $41. The payment for swimming must be paid in total by this date Wednesday 25th September for students to be able to attend. (No pay, no go!)
The In-term swimming program is ONLY eight days long. To be of benefit, students must participate in all eight days. It is essential that payment is made this term.
The school will not be accepting pro-rata payment for parents of students who only participate in a few days of the swimming lessons due to holidays or illness.
As the In-Term swimming lessons provide essential swimming skills and life skills for our students, we expect all students to participate in the program.
However, if your child/ren are not going to be participating in the In-term swimming program, it is also essential that your email newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au to state that your child is not participating in the program and the reasons why. Can you please inform the school ASAP if this is the case.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries about swimming lessons next term.

SPORT REPORT
Faction Athletics Carnival
Last Tuesday morning our carnival events commenced with the Long Distance, Jumps and Throwing events. The students performed brilliantly on this day despite the cold morning. On the Friday carnival day, we all enjoyed the beautiful Spring day weather with some of us even getting sun burnt!
It was once again, fantastic to see so many parents, grandparents and friends supporting the students in their events and enjoying the carnival events last Tuesday and Friday. Congratulations to all of the children in every faction and event who participated with great enthusiasm and effort. It was wonderful to watch you participate so enthusiastically and with great endeavour. So many individual events and team games had close finishes and we were very impressed with the sportsmanship shown to each other after your events. You really did show the ‘Newborough Way’ to your team mates, faction, teachers and parents.
Once again, I would like to thank the Newborough staff for their wonderful support and assistance to prepare the children for the carnival and all the volunteers who assisted with the set-up, a carnival job or the pack up of the carnival. Your efforts were greatly appreciated by all of the Newborough community and greatly assisted to ensure the carnival ran smoothly. Special thanks to Matt Gaunt, who has been our Disk Jockey and Announcer for our Swimming and Athletics carnivals over many years. We have really appreciated your efforts and enthusiasm and we loved your music selections between events! A very big thank you also to Tim Riley, our hard working gardener for his continued effort to make the oval and track so wonderful for our carnival. I would also like to thank the P & C for providing a sausage sizzle lunch for the children and families as well as the Kindy parents who provided coffee and delicious snacks for the Newborough community throughout the day from the “Kindy Café”.
Congratulations to Manning Faction who maintained their lead that they held from the Long Distance, Jumps and Throwing events proving too strong to be declared the champion team with 1,115 points. Corbett finished strongly in second place with 1,078 points and Connor finished in third place with 794 points. According to Ms Phillips, it has been nine years since Manning were the Athletics Champions!
On the day, every child showed great individual effort, sportsmanship and at times, resilience to keep trying to do their best. Congratulations to the following children who were awarded the individual championship medallions –

On Wednesday, 18th September, the jumps, throws and long distance running events will be held from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The main carnival will be held on Friday 20th September, also at Deanmore Primary School from 10.00 – 2.30pm. If your child has been selected for any events for this carnival, their excursion and consent forms were sent home at the beginning of this week. Permission forms for students in the Wednesday 18th September events must also be returned by Thursday 12th September.
As part of our involvement in the Interschool Athletics Carnival, we must provide volunteers to assist with a few allocated jobs on both days of the carnival program. Please see your child’s carnival paperwork to complete these forms if you are able to assist or come and have a chat with me to see if a job is still available to assist with.

School Banking
One of the great things about school banking is that it’s designed to reward regular savers. It doesn’t matter how much the kids deposit – what’s important is making saving a regular part of their weekly routine. If your child hasn’t banked in a while, pop in next Wednesday to check how many tokens they’ve already earnt (tokens don’t expire each year). This term we have 8 rewards to choose from with new goodies added every term.
And if the kids need any more motivation to save – it’s worth reminding them they earn a bonus 1.8% interest on their account (on top of their standard 0.5% interest) if they make at least one deposit and no withdrawals each calendar month.
See you before school next Wednesday in the library.

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is
