Principal’s Introduction

WA Massed Choir Festival

We received an exciting announcement recently when Newborough students were selected to take lead roles in the WA Massed Choir Festival coming shortly. Sky van der Meer was chosen to be a compare for our concert and Jude Shen will be a soloist. Both talented Music students had to audition in their own time against a very competitive field od aspirants. This is a fantastic achievement that will make our night on Friday 27th September even more memorable. Thank you Mrs Snelson for all your enthusiastic coaching, skill development and encouragement supporting our Music students.

Open Board Meeting Monday 16th September

The School Board will hold its annual Open Board meeting on Monday 16th September in the Library commencing at 7:00pm. Entry via the Kindy/Daycare gate. Parents and school community members are very welcome to come and join us to see how the Board operates, contribute to discussions and put forward questions. At this meeting we will have a presentation on the Mental Health strategy from Miss Danker, an update on technologies from Mr Stenhouse, continue our review on the school’s homework Policy and look at the feedback from the Year Sevens survey from our 2018 graduating group. Plus a lot more. Come and join us.

Wrestling Champ

Year Six student Finn Bald has been selected to represent Western Australia in the National Junior Wrestling Championships that will be held in Brisbane during the holiday break.

Finn earned a silver medal in the recent weight/age division at the WA State Championships. Finn started learning and competing in Wrestling for the last two years at a gym that boasts the current Open Australian Champion. His proud Mum, Kellie has encouraged Finn from the start helping him find a coach, a gym and getting right behind him.

He says that he enjoys the discipline where you learn to manage yourself and control your emotions.

The rules are quite strict helping keep competitors safe yet allowing the physicality that Finn enjoys. You can earn points from various holds and throws or close the competition off quickly with a shoulder pin. The first competitor to get 10 points ahead or achieve a shoulder pin is the winner. Finn would like to go all the way with his wrestling and hopes that if he does well he might be selected to represent Australia in Singapore. We certainly wish him all the best and look forward to hearing how he goes.

Hockey Achievements

You may recall that I recently reported that another Year Six student, Sofie Clementi, was to represent WA in the Schools Sports Under 12 State Girls Hockey team at the Australian Championships in Bendigo, Victoria.

Sofie has just returned with her team achieving a very creditable equal third place. Sofie, who mainly plays half back, said she enjoyed the challenge of very highly skilled opponents and team-mates learning a great deal about positioning, ball movement and reading the play that will further help her own game in the future.

Sofie says that her coach encouraged the girls to do their best and that it doesn’t matter what you’ve done it’s what you do next that really counts. Her team won most games and was very competitive throughout the tournament.

When not playing the team had several trips to local places of interest. One in particular that Sofie enjoyed was to the gold mine. Whilst she enjoyed the whole experience she said that she found the flying a bit scary and couldn’t wait to get back home to Mum’s great cooking after a week of hotel dinners. Well done Sofie.

Sustainability Shed and Open Air Classroom

We have started moving Sustainability equipment and resources into our new shed and classes are discovering a new, great place to learn and do work. At the moment we are putting together some new wheelbarrows, a cart, racks and shelving during lunch breaks. Lots of children, not just the Newbie Knights drop in to help.

Special Knights Project Team members Sunni Mentink, Sophie Dallin and Mia Shattock painted the Newbie Knight’s logo onto a new pin up board that is now in place along with a whiteboard. They did a fantastic job working on the new table made from a recycled advertisement hoarding kindly donated by Rainer Kosok and his work.

Mrs Saggers Year 3 class were the first to make use of the open air classroom. In the photos you can see them checking out the vegie patch, working on a learning task and giving thumbs up in the open air.

The Newbie Knights Gardening team meet every Wednesday lunchtime. Parents and helpers are welcome to join us and have some gardening fun. We have gloves and protective shirts if needed.

Happy Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day to all our Dad’s this Sunday. Dad’s and Father figures play such an important part in every child’s life. Have a great day with the kids.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Never judge someone by the way he looks or a book by the way it’s covered; for inside those tattered pages, there’s lots to be discovered.”

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and Excursions

Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non payment of future incursions or excursions

Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.

2019 Voluntary Contributions

Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.

If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.

IN-TERM SWIMMING LESSONS – WEEKS ONE AND TWO, TERM FOUR

The In-term Swimming lessons are in Weeks One and Two of Term Four. While this may sound like a whole term away (and it is), we need to have the In-term swimming completely organised by the end of this term. (Ten weeks does seem to go VERY quickly). The Excursion Advice Form have been sent home for all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 but is also on the Newborough Primary School website in case it is squashed at the bottom of your child’s school bag, along with soggy sandwiches and the World of Maths note!

The final date for payment for swimming lessons is Wednesday 25th September – Week 10 of this term.

The cost per child is $41. The payment for swimming must be paid in total by this date Wednesday 25th September for students to be able to attend. (No pay, no go!)

The In-term swimming program is ONLY eight days long. To be of benefit, students must participate in all eight days. It is essential that payment is made this term.

The school will not be accepting pro-rata payment for parents of students who only participate in a few days of the swimming lessons due to holidays or illness.

Please do not hesitate to contact the administration staff to discuss payment plans now for your children if needs be.

As the In-Term swimming lessons provide essential swimming skills and life skills for our students, we expect all students to participate in the program.

However, if your child/ren are not going to be participating in the In-term swimming program, it is also essential that your email newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au to state that your child is not participating in the program and the reasons why. Can you please inform the school ASAP if this is the case.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries about swimming lessons next term.

BYOD Parent Evening

There will be a parent information session held on Tuesday, 10th September from 6.30pm – 7.30pm in the school library for parents of Year 3 students to find out more information about the school’s 2020 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program.

Students from Year 4 to 6 have the option to bring their own device to school. We ask that the device meets the school’s specified criteria, devices need to be a Laptop or a 2-in-1 device. We ask that students do not bring iPads or tablets.

All information can be found on the school’s website below. We have partnered with Stott & Hoare and JB Education to provide a range of purchasing options for parents. This information will be updated on the website shortly.

Chaplain News

The cupboard is bare!

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to meet some of that. To do this we are going to offer the opportunity for families to donate non-perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers as needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs or another school that is in a difficult situation.

Some suggestions of what to donate: long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers. Think about things that can be put together as a basic meal…

The other option is for people to donate a $10 Woolworths gift card. This would be used by me (not given to families) when there is an immediate need that the stock I have doesn’t meet.

The plan is for families at Newborough to bring food items to Room 11 before school during
Week 6 (26th -30th August), any day that week.

If you have any questions please see Ali Dee (Tuesday & Friday) or Natalie Kos (Rm 11)

Thanks,

Ali Dee

SPORT REPORT

Faction Athletics Carnival

Next week our faction athletics carnival is scheduled to commence with the Long Distance, Jumps and Throwing events on Tuesday 3rd September, from 9.00am – 12.30pm and the main carnival on Friday 6th September from 9.00am – 2.50pm. Despite the very wet and cold weather, the children have trained very hard for their carnival events. A huge thank you to all the teachers and support staff for the many hours they have spent collecting data and recording the children into their events for the carnival.

A big thank you to all of the parents who have offered to assist at either the Tuesday or Friday events (or both!). A cream coloured paper note will be sent home this week with your child to inform you of your job role if you volunteered. Volunteer forms are available in the front office If you would like to volunteer, as there are still some jobs available.

Carnival Set Up:

On the morning of both carnivals on Tuesday 3rd September and Friday 6th September, we would appreciate any parent help to set up the shelters. We would also appreciate some help with placing the team game dots on the track, putting up the bunting etc on Friday morning. We will be setting up from 7.30 – 8.30am. Please come to the oval if you would like to assist.

Important Information for Parents for the Faction Carnival:

This information will also be emailed.

This year we will continue to streamline our communication with parents and children in regards to the Faction Carnival. The processes this year will include the parents/guardians receiving a soft copy (email) of the carnival program which will be sent out on Wednesday 28th August. A few hard copies will be available from the recording desk at the carnival on Friday 6th September.

TUESDAY EVENTS:

Students in Years 2 – 6 who have been selected for the Jumps, Throws and Long-Distance events to be held on Tuesday 3rd September from 9.00am – 12.30pm will receive a hard copy (paper) timetable this week which will indicate what events they have been selected for. These selected students asked to wear their sport uniform for these events and have a drink bottle and if required, their asthma medication with them. The Tuesday timetable starting times are a guide only.

FRIDAY EVENTS:

Once again, the Years 1 - 6 will NOT be receiving an individual event form highlighting the events that they have been scheduled to be involved in for the Friday carnival events only. Instead, the children will be informed of what events they will participate in, which will include a Year level division race and at least three team games. Please refer to the carnival "Parent Program" for the order of these events. Unfortunately, we are unable to determine the exact starting time of any of these events listed on the program; however, as a guide the individual running events are held in the morning from 9.00am commencing with the Year 1’s through to the Year 6’s and the majority of team games are held in the afternoon from 12.30 – 2.30pm with the exception of Circle Ball (Years 1 – 3), Corner Spry (Years 4 – 6) the Zig Zag Relay (Years 1 – 6) and the Egg and Spoon Relay (Years 1 – 3) which should be held around 10.30am – 12.00pm.

VOLUNTEERS:

Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered to assist at either the Tuesday or Friday events. Please look out for a cream coloured note in your child’s bag this week which will inform you of your job role.

PARKING:

Please park on Hazlitt Field (the school soccer field) off Wilding Street or legal parking bays around the edge of the school. Karrinyup Sports Centre parking bays are not part of the school parking and should not be used.

PARENT SEATING/VIEWING AREA ON THE SPORTS DAY:

The allocated parent/guardian area is on the west side of the running track which will be behind and heading north of the boundary fence. Please bring along your chair and picnic rug for your own comfort.

To help with the smooth running of the day and safety for all concerned, please note the following messages:

  • Enjoy a picnic lunch atmosphere with your family on the oval at approximately 12.00 – 12.30pm. A sausage sizzle will be available on the day for all families who have pre-ordered.
  • The Kindy will once again be providing a Kindy Café for parents and friends on the oval. The café is not for the children in the bays.
  • Parents are NOT permitted to visit the faction bays, or stand near the faction bays under any circumstance, UNLESS requested by the faction teacher in a case of an emergency. Please ensure your child has food and drink organised with them and is fully prepared so that you do not need to visit your child.
  • DOGS are not permitted on school grounds during the school day. (The Faction Carnival is a dog-free zone!)
  • Drinking alcohol and smoking are also not permitted on school grounds.
  • When visiting the Kindy Café, collecting memories of your child at the dias or visiting the toilet, please walk between the small boundary fence and the track behind the finishing hoops to avoid an accidental collision with our fast finishing students at the finishing line!

The children and staff are looking forward to our annual Faction Athletics Carnival and we hope you can join us on the school oval for this event.

NEWBROs - The Champion Dads of Newborough Primary School

On Saturday August 25th we had the most successful Bunnings Sausage Sizzle at Balcatta Bunnings which raised a whopping $1950 for the Newbros!! An outstanding effort my 43 dad’s, mum’s, grandads, a Deputy Principal and countless kids. We sold almost 1000 hotdogs! Mr Worthy made an appearance to see 26 people in the line (our record). A few moments of madness occurred such as running out of onions and even tomato sauce at one stage but many a Dad pitched in and saved the day! Big thanks to Amanda Meyer for organising the most delicious sausages (award winning too) at a very generous price (Stirling Village Butchers who supply the meat at our Canteen - check them out outside the Stirling IGA!); Carly Fowkes for her guidance on running such a successful sausage sizzle and Newbro dad Shane Thomas for his many trips to the supermarket for supplies and his countless hours organising. Thank you to all the other dads who chipped in and did double shifts, all the many kids who helped out and worked on their counting and even the kids who were shopping at Bunnings and jumped behind the table and helped out for many hours (Olivia Year 4)! Well done team!

All money raised will go back into the Newbros to fund our BIG School Camp-out on Saturday November 16. There will food and ice cream vans, footy and cricket games followed by a movie night before sleeping out on Jim Hazlitt Field under the stars. Sunday morning the fun will continue with a BBQ cook-up including pancakes and a coffee van. We can only make this a success with lots of help (there’s only a couple of us at the moment). Dads please get onboard. Send us an e-mail newbrodads@gmail.com and say g’day! The Newbros!

Newborough P and C Rock Quiz

The inaugural Newborough P and C Rock Quiz was held on 10th of August 2019 and what a great success it was. The hall was packed with music aficionados as well as groupies who were there for a good time. The teachers table, ably skippered by Ms Kos, proved to be too strong and were the run away winners. Their knowledge of all forms of music was very broad and they were one of only a handful of tables who were able to correctly identify a Batsy Bisco album cover!

Other notable winners were

Criss Cross” – Best dressed couple, Slobidan and Michele
Slash” - GNR – Best dressed male, Laurie McCallum
Dolly Parton” – Best dressed Female, Nat Alach

Apologies to all for the misspelling of names

Nights like these are only possible with the help of volunteers and with generous supporters. We were very fortunate to have the services of Andrew “Velvet Voice” Winton and his band. Andrew carried the night with his famous blend of cutting satire and gracious melancholy and the band exploded with some hard driving rock and wistful soul music once the official quiz was finished, which had everyone dancing and the non-dancers nodding their heads and tapping their feet.

Special thanks go to the fantastic organisers, Carly, Bec, Tania, Karen, Corina and Patti for the responsible service of alcohol, which was generally responsible.

Our many sponsors were local business and artisans, and we hope you can support them by adopting the motto “Live local, buy local”

Thanks to all who were able to come and support the school, look forward to seeing you at next years “Teachers quiz” where questions will be sourced from the Year 5 Naplan test!

School Banking

One of the great things about school banking is that it’s designed to reward regular savers. It doesn’t matter how much the kids deposit – what’s important is making saving a regular part of their weekly routine. If your child hasn’t banked in a while, pop in next Wednesday to check how many tokens they’ve already earnt (tokens don’t expire each year). This term we have 8 rewards to choose from with new goodies added every term.

And if the kids need any more motivation to save – it’s worth reminding them they earn a bonus 1.8% interest on their account (on top of their standard 0.5% interest) if they make at least one deposit and no withdrawals each calendar month.

See you before school next Wednesday in the library.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhoodFEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:
