Principal’s Introduction
Welcome Back
It’s great to be back at school. Welcome back everyone and special welcome to our new families and returning staff. This term we have three Notre Dame Intern Practice Teachers, Miss Grace O’Brien in Mrs Tennant’s Year 1 class, Miss Rebecca Dunn in Ms Elisa Phillip’s Year 6 class and Miss Caitlin Clarke in Ms Lauren Danker’s Year 6 class.
As usual this term is action packed with a range of activities including Cross Country Running, Athletics carnivals and the Kindy Cafe, Book Week, P&C RockSchool Quiz Night, STEAM Week with a focus on Science, National Tree Planting Day, World of Maths Incursion, the WA Massed Choir, Concert auditions and practice for the musical Seussical ready for term four and much more.
Have a wonderful Term Three everyone.
Vale Mrs Nicky Quekett (1919-2019)
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs Nicky Quekett, former Deputy Principal, at Newborough PS in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Mrs Quekett attended the 60th Anniversary Fete at which I enjoyed afternoon tea with her and her daughter. She was Deputy Principal when I did my final teaching practicum here in 1981.
Mrs Quekett lived a very full and interesting life. She was born in South Africa to British parents in 1919. During the second world war she joined the South African Air Force serving in Kenya for four years. She later went back to Kenya where she met her husband Bill who worked for BOAC (Now British Airways). They lived in the Middle East, South East Asia and India for twenty-five years before moving to Perth to raise their three children. Sadly, Mr Quekett died in 1976. Mrs Quekett reluctantly had to retire from teaching at sixty-five in 1984. With still much to give she taught English in poor rural areas in China for several years before coming back to Fremantle where she wrote about her life and published three books. She donated one of these books called ‘Jimmy The Fremantle Cat’ to the school. What a wonderful and active life!
Mathematics Achievements
In June, Taya Fedorova, Room 5 Year 3, took part in the Hong Kong International Mathematics Olympiad. Taya earned a high score in the competition and she has been selected to fly to Hong Kong to take part in the next round at the end of August. This is a great achievement for Taya and she is very excited about challenging herself in the next round! We wish her all the best for her trip and we look forward to hearing about how she went when she returns to Perth. Good luck, Taya!
Champion Netballers
What a privilege it was to see all our Newborough Netball teams play last Friday evening and Saturday morning. Whilst all the teams performed really well I was really impressed with the way our school spirit and values shone through in the girls’ performances. Teamwork was a feature and the girls certainly Challenged themselves against some very good opposition. The support of parents and excellent coaching really stood out. Congratulations to Mrs Winton and all the coaches and supporters who get right behind each team and all the girls. Having seen the teams play over the last few years I particularly enjoyed seeing the way the girls have developed their skills and tactics. Newborough Netball is a strong as ever.
National Tree Day
Last Friday the 26th July the Newbie Knights Tree and Shrub planting team of twenty Year 3-6 students planted forty trees and shrubs in the Nature Playground and along the new Kindergarten fence. This year we were once again partnered with Scarboro Toyota who very kindly provided the trees and shrubs, gloves, shirts, tree guards and helpers Sprihi and Bec. Mrs Rule also helped preparing the holes and supervising the teams of three as they planted and cared for the new plants. The Knights were taught how to plant properly and then worked in their teams to carefully establish their trees and shrubs. All the plants are local native species that will hopefully grow and flourish over the coming years. We now have nearly twenty Banksia trees and many more native shrubs around the school. Three years ago we didn’t have single Banksia, something of a disappointment as our logo is a Banksia.
The new plants will provide lots of colour, flowers to attract birds, insects and native bees as well as shade, wind barrier and look good. Plants also use up carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, all good for the environment. The Newbie Knight Tree team will monitor the plants making sure their guards remain in place and they are watered until established.
Our school has a policy that if we lose a significant tree, as we did for the Kindy fence, we will replace it with at least five trees or shrubs. We are very well ahead of this target.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Visitors to the school
If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.
Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED
Payment of Incursions and Excursions –
Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.
If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.
Non payment of future incursions or excursions
Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.
2019 Voluntary Contributions
Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.
While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.
- Reading Resources
- Mathematics Resources
- Art/Craft
- Technology
Total Contribution $60
The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.
If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.
Absentees
Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:
SMS: 0409 088 585 (preferred
method)
Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone:9446 1025
Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.
For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.
Thank You
Administration Staff
Collecting Students during school hours
Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.
Deputy News
Welcome back to Term 3! We had a very smooth start to what is going to be a very hectic term!
STEAM WEEK – WEEK 4, TERM 3 12TH-16TH AUGUST
This year, Newborough Primary School will be highlighting the National Science Week through our STEAM Week, rather than focussing on Book Week. (STEAM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics)
The theme for our STEAM Week is the National Science Week theme of Destination Moon, a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing.
A range of activities have been planned for STEAM Week across the school to commemorate the Moon Landing.
Please note three very important events happening in that week.
WORLD OF MATHS INCURSION FOR ALL STUDENTS KINDERGARTEN TO YEAR 6 TUESDAY 13TH AUGUST AND WEDNESDAY 14TH AUGUST 2019
The World of Maths Roadshow is an ideal opportunity to see how maths is applied to real life situations. Students will gain an insight into problem-solving, working in teams, and also various maths principles which are part of the Western Australian curriculum. It is a highly engaging session which will show students maths can be fun!
The cost of the incursion is $6.60 per student and must be paid via internet banking by Wednesday 7th August please. By paying by Wednesday 7th August, this allows payment to clear, allowing students to attend the incursion. Students who have not been paid for will not be able to attend the incursion. Our apologies that for this incursion, parents cannot attend. (However, there are lots of other good things happening that parents can attend. Please keep reading. . . )
An Incursion Advice Note to Parents has gone home. However, a copy of the Advice Note has also been uploaded onto the Newborough Primary School website in case you misplace the note at home or the dog eats it.
DESTINATION MOON, DRESS UP DAY, CHOIR PERFORMANCE AND OPEN CLASSROOMS
On Friday 16th August, we will begin the day with a whole school gathering in the undercover area to listen to the Senior Choir sing one of their WAMCF songs “Space Race to Every Question.”
From there, all classrooms will be open to parents and family from 9.00-9.30am where teachers will be organising a range of STEAM Week activities for parents to participate in with their child.
We are also asking students to Dress-Up on Friday 16th August in a Destination Moon costume or outfit. Students may come dressed up as an astronaut, cosmonaut, astronomer, rocket ship, a star or anything related to the theme of Destination Moon
SCIENCE OPEN CLASSROOMS – ALL WEEK
Our marvellous Mrs Metcalf (AKA Mrs Frizzle) is opening up her Science Classroom to all parents in Week 4 so that parents can come and participate in their child’s fun Destination Moon science lesson that week. I have attached the timetable for Mrs Metcalf’s science lessons for Week 4. Please feel free to join your child’s science lesson in Week 4. Please enter the school via the front office and sign in please.
Please contact Mrs Metcalf if you have any queries in relation to the open science classrooms. Samantha.metcalf@education.wa.edu.au
IN-TERM SWIMMING LESSONS – WEEKS ONE AND TWO, TERM FOUR
The In-term Swimming lessons are in Weeks One and Two of Term Four. While this may sound like a whole term away (and it is), we need to have the In-term swimming completely organised by the end of this term. (Ten weeks does seem to go VERY quickly!!!!) The Excursion Advice Form has been sent home for all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 but is also on the Newborough Primary School website in case it is squashed at the bottom of your child’s school bag, along with soggy sandwiches and the World of Maths note!
The final date for payment for swimming lessons is Wednesday 25th September – Week 10 of this term.
The cost per child is $41. The payment for swimming must be paid in total by this date Wednesday 25th September for students to be able to attend. (No pay, no go!)
The In-term swimming program is ONLY eight days long. To be of benefit, students must participate in all eight days. It is essential that payment is made this term.
The school will not be accepting pro-rata payment for parents of students who only participate in a few days of the swimming lessons due to holidays or illness.
Please do not hesitate to contact the administration staff to discuss payment plans now for your children if needs be.
As the In-Term swimming lessons provide essential swimming skills and life skills for our students, we expect all students to participate in the program.
However, if your child/ren are not going to be participating in the In-term swimming program, it is also essential that your email newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au to state that your child is not participating in the program and the reasons why. Can you please inform the school ASAP if this is the case.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries about swimming lessons next term.
Year 4 PEAC Testing
The PEAC Program provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6. PEAC offers a range of courses that provide identified students with work that is intellectually challenging. All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Program.
Testing at Newborough PS will occur on 9.00am, Tuesday, 6th August 2019.
The scores from the test will be used in the selection of students for PEAC courses and extension programs during 2020 to 2021 and also to inform educational provision in schools. If you do not wish your child to be included in the PEAC assessment please notify the school in writing by Friday, 2nd August 2019.
WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARN
A massive thankyou to all parents and community members who contributed to Newborough Primary School’s Woolworths Earn and Learn this year. The school tallied a total of 45 080 points which we happily used to purchase some great resources through the educational store. MTA (Modern Teaching Australia).
The major item we have managed to purchase is an entire reading series called Honey Ants. This reading series will help our students, read and write in Standard Australian English. These books are phonetic based and based on indigenous themes and should be highly engaging in our junior grades.
We have also purchased some coding and logic games for our middle primary classes to help enhance the STEM area teaching.
We should receive these resources in Term Four.
Thank you again for everyone’s contribution.
EMERGING MINDS Child 360 APP
Emerging Minds (previously the Australian Infant, Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health Association) is an organisation that has been established to promote the mental health and well-being of babies, young children, youth and their families.
To support parents in their role, Emerging Minds has designed an application (app), child360, that helps parents boost their children's resilience by reflecting on five areas: parent-child relationships, emotions and behavior, routines, communication, and support networks. It also helps to identify areas that parents may wish to seek support in their endeavours.
The link will enable you to download the app as well as information about it. You can also access the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play: child360 app

Chaplain News
Newborough YouthCARE Chaplain Update
YouthCARE Chaplains provide holistic pastoral care to students, school staff and members of the community, irrespective of their faith or cultural backgrounds. The pastoral care provided has a broad scope and includes one on one and programmed group sessions addressing physical and mental health issues, social and values education, behaviour management, emotional support and professional referrals among other out workings.
Our School Chaplaincy Service is provided through YouthCARE by Ali Dee.
Although the school strongly supports our Chaplain, we understand that you, the parent, may have objections to your child/children interacting with or accessing the services of the Chaplain.
YouthCARE Chaplaincy is an ‘Opt-Out’ programme, and thus if we do not hear from you the assumption is that you give permission for your child to access Chaplaincy services if needed.
If you do object please advise a member of the administration team so your child/children can access help through other avenues of our student services team.

School Banking
One of the great things about school banking is that it’s designed to reward regular savers. It doesn’t matter how much the kids deposit – what’s important is making saving a regular part of their weekly routine. If your child hasn’t banked in a while, pop in next Wednesday to check how many tokens they’ve already earnt (tokens don’t expire each year). This term we have 8 rewards to choose from with new goodies added every term.
And if the kids need any more motivation to save – it’s worth reminding them they earn a bonus 1.8% interest on their account (on top of their standard 0.5% interest) if they make at least one deposit and no withdrawals each calendar month.
See you before school next Wednesday in the library.

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator
Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
