FATHERS DAY

This is an outline of the events that will be coming up in 2019. Please note dates are subject to change.

Principal’s Introduction

Semester One Highlights and Holiday Wishes

We’ve had another fantastic term full of solid learning and lots of engaging activities to keep everyone involved and interested. One of the big highlights was the fabulous, energetic and skilful Edu-dance program that culminated in last week’s two concerts. Wasn’t it terrific to see how engaged and excited the children were. There was so much fun and talent. Throughout the term we had our older students participating in the Winter Sports program including Soccer, Netball and Aussie Rules Football. We did well in the Winter Carnival taking out the Soccer and B Grade Netball and runner up in Netball A and Aussie Rules.

This term we have also had 8 Practice Teachers from Notre Dame University learning their craft and adding lots of enthusiasm and drive to our teaching program. As their Head of Practice I have been extremely impressed by the enthusiasm and capacity to absorb and learn from fantastic teacher mentors. This is a real bonus for our school and a great opportunity to help the next generation of teachers as they come through.

We have also had the construction of the perimeter fence. It has taken a lot longer than expected but will be at lock up for the school holidays. Shortly the Sustainability Shed will be constructed and our Newbie Knights and Sustainability program will have one permanent home. In this last week we celebrate our Indigenous community with NAIDOC Week activities culminating in a big assembly this Friday. The children have been making tapping sticks, learning about aspects of Aboriginal Culture and the meaning of the Aboriginal flag.

Aren’t we so fortunate to have so many families from so many cultures in our school.

Parents should by now have received teacher’s reports about their child’s progress. I get to read many of these and can see the knowledge and devotion teachers have for every child. I am always amazed at the depth of understanding all teachers have about each child. We are lucky to have such a wonderful teaching team in this school. I would suggest that parents read these carefully and contact their child’s teacher to work in partnership for their child’s further development.

It’s now time to have a little mid semester break. For those families leaving us we wish you all the very best and hope you take great learning and memories. I trust everyone has a restful, enjoyable and battery re-charging break ready for another exciting Term Three. Looking ahead we have Cross Country Running, Athletics carnivals and the Kindy Cafe, Book Week, P&C Quiz Night, National Tree Planting Day, World of Maths Incursion, auditions and practice for the musical Seussical ready for Term Four and much more.

Have a lovely break and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for Term Three.

Perimeter Fence Arrangements

Our new perimeter fence is almost complete and ready for the final hand over. A great deal of planning has gone into making the fence and gates as unobtrusive as possible but to also be effective in the protection of our school from unwanted vandalism, damage and unauthorised visitors. We value the strong partnership with our local community. The fence will mean some slight changes to the way we operate as a school.

Opening and Closing Times

Current arrangements for before and after school play are not affected. Students may arrive at school from 8:15am. Pre-primary to Year Six have supervised play from 8:15am till 8:30am then they head off to class.

After school, students may play at school if they are closely supervised by their own parents till 4:00pm when gates are locked.

The Front Office opens at 8:00am and closes at 4:00pm each school day. The office entrance is through the Front Door.

Main access gates to the school will be opened at 7:30am and close at 4:00pm. The Kindergarten and Mulberry Tree Gate will open at 7:00am and close at 6:00pm to allow for before and after school care access.

Dogs

No dogs, except authorised assistance dogs, are allowed in the area bounded by the taller 2.1 metre fence and building precinct area at any time. Dog owners with their dogs will still be allowed on the ovals and grounds of the school from 4:00pm till 7:30am on our as long as they act responsibly and there isn’t a school endorsed event happening. As principal and site manager I will close James Hazlitt Field, where the majority of community dog owners have trained and played with their dogs, for a period of time, should owners not clean up after their dogs or if there is anti-social behaviour. Parents walking dogs to school are asked to tie up their dogs well away from gates (at least 5 metres).

Special Events or Access

The majority of gates will remain closed and locked ready for access for services and special events. The lock system is consistent with all public schools so emergency services have quick access. The majority of staff will be issued with a registered key.

Special access arrangements will be made for groups and organisations that have authorisation to be on school grounds or to use our facilities through our Community Use process. These are all approved by the principal and can be arranged through the Front Office.

Signage will be organised to support the above arrangements as needed. This will not be done immediately to allow time to trial the above arrangements and ensure directions meet the needs of the school.

All visitors are required to report to the front office.

If you have any comment or suggestions, please let me know. John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au.

Staff Changes and Retirement

It is always sad to say goodbye to highly regarded staff who have made great contributions to our school, whether that be for a short stay or longer.

Mrs Aileen Naylor is retiring this week after 13 fabulous years as a Special Needs Teacher Assistant. Aileen has touched the lives of many students during this time. The children learn so much in her care and look up to her with great appreciation. She has also been a wonderful staff member with her kind and caring manner, great photography skills and keeping our Staffroom tidy and a happy sanctuary for us. She is looking forward to catching some fish, taking lots of photographs, travelling and relaxing. Thank you, Aileen. You have had a wonderful career and will be missed by all of us.

Ms Rebecca Lee, who has been working as an Education Assistant in Mrs Beattie’s Pre-Primary finishes her fixed term contract this week. Her bright and bubbly manner will be missed.

Also leaving us is Miss Kortnee Evans who has done a sterling job in the Front Office as a School Officer, more recently on Mondays and often filling in for relief. Kortnee is concluding her University studies and hopefully pursuing her chosen field in psychology.

I am pleased to advise that Mrs Megan Saggers has been offered an extension of her fixed term contract teaching Year 3, room 6 students for the remainder of the year. Mr Peter Blanch, who was to have the year 3’s for semester two, has accepted an extension of his contract at Alkimos Beach PS and will remain there for this year.

Good Standing and Behaviour Management

All schools are required to include ‘Good Standing’ as part of their Behaviour Management in School (BMIS) Policy following the Minister of Education’s ‘Let’s Take a Stance Together’ response to school violence. Our staff and School Board has reintroduced ‘Good Standing’ to our own BMIS to further recognise students who meet the behavioural expectations of the school.

Newborough previously had a form of ‘Good Standing’ that was based on earning a silver or gold certificate, Ripper Recess every five weeks and a pin at the end of the year if there were no major behavioural breaches.

This was removed when we introduced the Positive Behaviour Support program last year as students were being rewarded through the ‘Newborough Way’ goldies and Class and Golden Time rewards process.

The new ‘Good Standing’ is a little different in that it is ongoing recognition of expected behaviours rather than earned.

Our BMIS policy has been updated and endorsed by the School Board. The whole policy is available on the school’s website at the link below in the ‘Our School’ tab under Plans, Reports and Policies.

http://www.newboroughps.wa.edu.au/

In summary:

Good Standing is recognition of students who meet behavioural expectations at Newborough PS.
All students commence with Good Standing status.
Good Standing entitles students to participate in all school based activities.
Students lose their Good Standing status when:

  • They reach their 3rd Major Incident status of the BMI 1, 2, 3 Magic process
  • Fast Tracked for a Major Breach
  • At the discretion of the Principal or Principal’s delegate

Students who lose their Good Standing Status are ineligible to attend extra curricula (Non assessed) activities such as class excursions, sporting events, choir, graduation and major awards events, sustainability, and student leadership roles.

Good Standing status is reinstated after a minimum period of 10 school days without further behavioural breach.

Parents and student are informed of Good Standing as part of the Fast Track/Major Breach process.

The Principal or Principal’s delegate may negotiate adjustment to Good Standing status as part of Individual Behaviour Management Plans or for special needs students.

Newbie Knights Cranking Up

The Newbie Knights Sustainability Shed and Outdoor Classroom will be ready when we return from the mid-year break. We thank the P&C and Suez who have financially supported this construction near our Vegie Patch. Works commence on the first Monday of the break. The shed and outdoor classroom area will be the hub for a range of activities supporting the cross curricula priority of Sustainability in our school. Momentum is gathering with several partnerships including the City of Stirling’s Living Green program, Karrinyup Rotary, parents and staff.

The Newbie Knights have selected the areas they would like to be involved with for Term Three. They have all received their Passports and signed the contract with Mr Worthy. Whilst they will be key players all students and staff will have opportunity to learn and join in. The first round of activities includes:

Area

Managing Teacher

Battery Recycling

Ms Danker

Plastics Recycling

Mrs Metcalf

Energy Management

Mr Worthy and Class Teachers

Food Waste/Worm Farm

Mrs Metcalf

Paper Re-Use/Recycling

Mrs Saggers

Vegie Patch/Gardening

Special Projects

Mr Worthy

Coming soon: Weather Watch, Home Knights and Bird Watching.

The vegie patch now has four beds planted with broccoli, cauliflower, beans, carrots, beetroot, brussel sprouts, celery, basil and much more. Thank you to Mrs Rule who came in to help and did a great job tidying up the shed. We have couple of vegie gardens available to families or community members who might like to grow their own vegies. Let me know.

This week Newbie Knights and interested students helped plant a range of plants and shrubs donated by the City of Stirling. I am most excited by the 9 large Banksia Menziesii, our school logo, planted in the Nature playground. Hopefully the quality planting and winter rains will allow these plants to flourish.

National Tree Day

Early next term we have National Tree Day and we will partner with Scarboro Toyota again to plants more trees and shrubs around the school. Some will be going in the Kindergarten where we unfortunately lost an established tree for the new fence. Our Tree Replacement policy says we need to plant at least five.

We have a new, smaller worm farm that is going gang busters. The worms are munching through vegie and plant scraps from the canteen and food waste collection. Plenty of worm juice for sale and orders taken at our school assemblies. All funds go back to the Sustainability projects.

Did you see our school featured on the back page of the latest Stirling Scene Community newsletter?

If you are interested in helping with any of our projects please let me know.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

What does NAIDOC stand for? NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.

Newborough Primary School will recognise NAIDOC Week (7-14th July) in Week 10 of this term. The theme for this year is VOICE, TREATY, TRUTH: Lets work together for a shared future.

The purpose for NAIDOC Week at Newborough Primary School is to develop greater understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture using the theme of Voice. Treaty. Truth.

One of the amazing activities all students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 all completed was to paint clapping sticks, a traditional indigenous instruments used for percussion. Our wonderful music teacher, Mrs Snelson will be using the clapping sticks at our NAIDOC Week assembly and then in music classes after that.

DON’T FORGET OUR NAIDOC WEEK ASSEMBLY: Friday 5th July 2019 Week 10

You can find out more about NAIDOC Week on the website below:

TERM 3 WHOLE SCHOOL INCURSION

WORLD OF MATHS ROADSHOW

As part of STEAM WEEK at newborough Primary School, we have organised the World of Maths Roadshow to visit our school. The World of Maths Roadshow is an ideal opportunity for students to see how maths is applied to some real life situations.

Students will gain insight into problem solving, working in teams, and also various maths principles which are part of their curriculum this term.

It is a highly engaging session which will show the children that Maths can be fun!

Details of the Roadshow Visit:

YEAR LEVEL(S): Kindergarten to Year 6
DATES: Tuesday 13th August and Wednesday 14th August (Week 4, Term 3)
COST: $6.60 per child

An incursion note will be sent home to all parents/guardians at the beginning of Term 3.

TERM 4 INTERM SWIMMING PROGRAMME

Weeks 1 and 2, Term 4
Wednesday 16th October to Friday 25th October (8 days)
Cost $41 per child

This year’s Interm Swimming program is Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4 and will be held at the Scarborough Beach Pool this year instead of our normal venue of Craigie Leisure Centre. The Department of Education’s Interm Swimming lessons are a must to help ensure your child can swim competently and safely. The program are for all students from Pre-primary to Year 6.

As Interm Swimming is the first two weeks of Term 4, we are going to send the Permission Note out to parents in the first week back in Term 3 and will ask for payment to be made by the end of Term 3. It is very difficult finalising programs such as Interm Swimming when payment has not been made, and permission forms have not been received, by the due date. As students CANNOT participate in the lessons until full payment has been made, we will be strongly urging parents who need a payment plan to contact our Manager of Coorporate Services as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact us in regards to the Interm swimming program and discuss payment options if needs be.

Year 4 Excursion

On a very wet and windy Tuesday this week, both Year Four classes, their teachers and three parent helpers, set off to Fremantle and the Shipwrecks Museum. After a recess break in the bus, everyone ventured into the museum and Room 11 spent an hour exploring the museum and finding answers to complete their treasure hunt. Room 12 participated in an activity where they had to look at and discuss some artifacts that were in a bag, to decide who they may have belonged to and what their job was.

After that our guide, Fran, told a very interesting story about the ship the Batavia, which was shipwrecked near the Abrolhos Islands in 1629 and the mutiny that followed! We then swapped over and after an hour returned to the bus for a quick lunch before returning to school.

Both Year Four classes received many compliments about their knowledge, engagement, focus and teamwork throughout the day. Well done Year Four! So much of the Year Four History curriculum brought to life!

Seussical Jr The Musical Auditions
Weeks 1 and 2
Term 3, 2019

Exciting news!

Seussical Jr, The Musical, is coming! As you are aware, all Year 3-6 students will be participating in this year’s school musical, Seussical Jr, on Tuesday 3rd December and Wednesday 4th December at Churchlands Concert Hall. We ask that you put those dates into your calendar now!

Each year level will be forming the choruses of the musical. However, there are approximately 20 principal and supporting roles that we will be auditioning students for in Weeks One and Two of Term 3.

The first wave of auditions will be done through class time and call back auditions will be conducted BEFORE SCHOOL on Friday 2nd August. If your child is invited for a call back audition, we will email you to let you know, as your child will need to be at school on that day.

Audition Process

In the audition, students will be required to sing a small part of a song, prepare a given monologue and do a cold reading (a scene we will provide for students to review for a minute or two prior to reading it aloud).

Commitment to the Musical:

A musical is a commitment of time and energy.

  • Parents, please note that to be part of the main cast students must be available for all rehearsals in Term 4 and for the performance dates. Please check your calendars to see if you are going to be on holidays during Term 4 as this will impact on your child being cast for a main part.
  • Rehearsals will be on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 7:45 am – 8:30 am from Week One, Term 4. If your child is unable to make both mornings, this will also impact on being cast.
  • If your child does not have media permission, they will not be considered as we will be filming the production.

We will be sending out a contract for both cast members and parents to sign outlining these requirements and conditions.

Please have this discussion with your child before they take part in the auditions as we would not like to disappoint students because of unavailability.

Curtain Up!

Congratulations to all of the children who participated in the Year 5/6 Lightning Carnival last Friday. NEWBROs - The Champion Dads of Newborough Primary School

Newbros Winter Camp Out

Unfortunately our NEWBRO’s Winter Camp-out at Dwellingup got postponed on the weekend of 22nd of June due to bad weather. 15 NEWBROs and kids however (who were dying to go camping) got together for a last minute camp-out the Friday night before the rain arrived. We found an awesome camping spot up in the Avon Valley (see the pictures below). We had a brilliant night of exploring, cooking on the campfire (to varying degrees of success), hide and seek by torchlight and a hike to finish it off. I think a total of 583 toasted marshmallows were consumed which was a pretty good effort. More to the point, it gave busy dads a chance to connect with their kids and their school community, which is what NEWBROs is about! Thanks to school Dad Paul Rosser for giving this last minute camp life!

We have postponed our NEWBRO’s Winter Camp-out at Dwellingup for Dads and kids to Saturday the 27th of July. We have had a few drop-outs so go to the link below and book now as there are only a few tickets left.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle – August 25,2019

On Saturday August 25th we have our NEWBROs Bunnings Sausage Sizzle at Balcatta Bunnings which will be a great fundraising opportunity for the NEWBROs. We will need many Dads/Grandads on board to help make the day a success. The shifts are just 90 minutes each and an online roster is now available at the link below. More info will be e-mailed out but please put the date in your diary. Mums please get the Dads onboard. It’ll be a great day out at Bunnings! Money raised will be able to go back directly into NEWBROs to make future Dad/Kid events free or heavily discounted.

Newbros Big School Camp Out

Saturday November 16th at Jim Hazlitt Field at the school, we will have our first NEWBRO’s BIG SCHOOL CAMP-OUT (see the photo example below). There will food and ice cream vans, footy and cricket games followed by a movie night out under the stars before bedtime. Saturday morning the fun will continue with a BBQ cook-up including pancakes and a coffee van. We can only make this a success with lots of help (there’s only a couple of us at the moment). Dads please get onboard. Send us an e-mail newbrodads@gmail.com and say g’day! The Newbros!

Ripper Reader Program

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Mums and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time!please see Mrs Tennant (vicki.tennant@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 9 or Mrs Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7 o.

School Banking

One of the great things about school banking is that it’s designed to reward regular savers. It doesn’t matter how much the kids deposit – what’s important is making saving a regular part of their weekly routine. If your child hasn’t banked in a while, pop in next Wednesday to check how many tokens they’ve already earnt (tokens don’t expire each year). This term we have 8 rewards to choose from with new goodies added every term.

And if the kids need any more motivation to save – it’s worth reminding them they earn a bonus 1.8% interest on their account (on top of their standard 0.5% interest) if they make at least one deposit and no withdrawals each calendar month.

See you before school next Wednesday in the library.

School Banking Co-Ordinator

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is below:
