This is an outline of the events that will be coming up in 2019. Please note dates are subject to change.

Principal’s Introduction

Gymnastic Champion

Congratulations to Teresa Ozawa, Year 5 Mrs Boulos and Mrs Knight’s class, who recently competed in the Australian National Gymnastics competition representing Western Australia at the Melbourne Arena. Teresa finished in 5th place in the all-round Individual Sub Juniors (4th in Ball and 5th in Rope). Her team won a silver medal in the All Round Teams event with her team’s performance in Rhythmic Gymnastics Apparatus including balls, hoops and ropes. This was her first time away so she didn’t quite know what to expect. She said she saw how the other teams trained and prepared for their routines that was a little different to her team’s approach. Back at home Teresa trains about 13 hours each week including after school sessions and twice on Saturdays. Well done Teresa. We are very proud of your efforts and achievements and wish you all the best for the future.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“I believe you should always challenge yourself and stretch beyond your comfort zone – it’s how we grow. When doors open, you have to be brave enough to walk through them.”

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and Excursions

Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non payment of future incursions or excursions

Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.

2019 Voluntary Contributions

Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.

If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS: 0409 088 585 (preferred method)
Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone:9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2019

Semester 1 school reports will go out to parents via email on Monday 1st July 2019. (Week 10, Term 2) in the afternoon.

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

What does NAIDOC stand for? NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.

Newborough Primary School will recognise NAIDOC Week (7-14th July) in Week 10 of this term. The theme for this year is VOICE, TREATY, TRUTH: Lets work together for a shared future.

The purpose for NAIDOC Week at Newborough Primary School is to develop greater understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultureusing the theme of Voice. Teaty. Truth. There will be a number of whole school and in class activities happening. Please note the date for the following two assemblies to attend that help recognise NAIDOC Week.

1. CHOIR and INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Assembly: Friday 21st June 2019 Week 8

The choir is going to sing a range of NAIDOC/Indigenous/Australian songs at this assembly.

Some of the songs will be:

  • Djapana (Yothu Yindi song)
  • Life Line (a song about CY O’Connor)
  • You, Me and the Wide Open Sky

2. NAIDOC WEEK ASSEMBLY: Friday 5th July 2019 Week 10

Miss Phillips Year 6 Room 16 class will be running the NAIDOC WEEK assembly in Week 10.

In addition to this, all classes from Pre-Primary to Year 6 will be painting abotiginal clapping sticks which will be used in the music program. Rooms 3, 4, 8, 6 and 7 will be paitning their own clapping sticks in class with their teachers. Mrs Snelson will be painting the clapping sticks with the rest of the school in music classes.

A particular thank you to Mrs Snelson for her willingness to undertake this project during her music lessons.

The Importance Of Play-Based Learning (An article from the Department of Education Western Australia)

Children’s first teachers are their families. The daily interactions and experiences you share with your child is how they learn about their world, their culture and family. When children are little, a lot of these interactions involve play. Play is an essential part of every child’s learning. When children are playing, they are building their knowledge, skills and attitudes for lifelong learning. When children start school they bring all they have learned with them. Their teachers seek to build on these skills, interests and knowledge using the same vehicle for learning that works so well at home – PLAY!

Play-based learning at school Public schools are fantastic places for children to learn through play. Dedicated play spaces assist children to learn how to solve problems, persevere, compromise and cooperate with others. Through play they practise and apply the skills they are taught in the classroom. Schools understand that play-based learning is an important part of a balanced approach, and that alongside more explicit teaching and instruction, it helps to keep every child productive and engaged.

A play-based learning environment encourages talking, reading, thinking and writing. Through this, your child sees literacy and numeracy as part of their everyday experience. They see themselves as communicators, readers, writers and thinkers. They make predictions and generalisations about their world, use patterns and symbols, and experiment to find out why things happen. They make connections between experiences, concepts and processes. Play-based learning involves careful decisions and support from teachers, so your child grows to accept responsibility for their learning while still receiving purposeful guidance and feedback. It promotes important opportunities for your child to understand how to learn, develop critical thinking skills, adapt to change, and work independently as well as with others.

How you can support your child’s learning AT HOME:

  • Seek out different experiences – at home and while you are out and about.
  • Read every day with your child.
  • Have meaningful conversations with your child about things they are interested in.
  • Ask lots of questions such as I wonder what would happen if…? or I wonder how …? or I wonder why …?. The best questions are ones that you don’t already know the answer to, or that don’t have a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. Questions help your child make connections and meaning and let you know their interests and opinions.
  • Encourage your child to discover and develop at their own pace.
  • Give your child time to play outside, as well as inside, including physical activities like running, throwing or kicking balls, and climbing.
  • Try to relax about messiness and untidiness – clearing up is a productive part of children’s development.
  • Limit ‘screen-time’ on television or computers. Children thrive on two-way interactions.

TERM 3 WHOLE SCHOOL INCURSION - WORLD OF MATHS

It is a highly engaging session which will show the children that Maths can be fun!

Details of the Roadshow Visit:

YEAR LEVEL(S): Kindergarten to Year 6
DATES: Tuesday 13th August and Wednesday 14th August (Week 4, Term 3)
COST: $6.60 per child

An incursion note will be sent home to all parents/guardians at the beginning of Term 3.

Wellbeing – Healthy School Lunches on a Budget

Newborough Primary School is committed to helping families at need with emergency lunches for students in the form of vegemite sandwiches. These sandwiches are made by our wonderful staff on a roster and are paid for from staff’s own money – not school funds. This is an incredibly kind gesture of the Newborough PS staff and should not be abused by overusing or misusing this generosity.

We have noticed recently an increase in students needing lunch for a varying amount of reasons. While we are very happy to help in genuine cases, can we please ask parents to inform the front office first thing in the morning that the child needs a sandwich so we are organised for them; and that the reason is genuine and not because of parental disorganisation.

Below are five tips for packing a healthy budget lunch box.

1. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Keep lunches simple by writing down a selection of ideas that you know your children will like and rotate those ideas.

For example, in a 10-week term, you might start with ham and salad wraps in week one, egg and lettuce sandwiches in week two, tuna pasta in week three, chicken and slaw rolls in week four and salad sandwiches in week five. Then repeat the rotation. That’s enough variety without making it too much work for you.

To each lunch add a piece or two of seasonal fruit and a healthy snack like DIY cheese and crackers.

2. PLAN AHEAD.

Just like it’s a good idea to meal plan dinners, it’s also efficient to give thought to what you’re going to pack in the kid’s lunchboxes for the week ahead.

3. SHOP FOR THE WEEK.

Once you’ve planned the week’s lunches, make sure you have all the ingredients on hand to avoid early morning lunchbox emergencies.

4. SPEND 10 MINUTES PREPPING ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

If your children eat leftovers, then your lunchbox packing will be super easy. Just cook a little extra dinner and put it aside to grab in the morning. However, it can be helpful to spend 10 minutes on Sunday washing lettuce leaves, cutting fruit, cheese, carrots etc., hard boiling eggs, portioning out crackers or yoghurt or whipping up a quick batch of muffins.

5. KEEP SOME BACKUP SUPPLIES IN THE PANTRY.

It’s a good idea to keep an emergency stash of food for weeks when you don’t get to the supermarket, you’re ill, tired or don’t want to even think about packing a lunch box (we’ve all been there!).

Some backup supplies might include:

  • brown rice crackers or other wholemeal crackers of choice
  • tinned fruit
  • nuts
  • dried fruit
  • long life custard
  • peanut butter (we are a nut aware school) or vegemite

Buy in bulk and portion

Single serve foods and multi-packs tend to be more expensive than bulk packs, and they are more wasteful as far as packaging!

Compared to home-baked foods, they are also more expensive and less healthy although they are convenient when you’re busy and we buy store-bought crackers and other convenience foods.

To make your own cheese and crackers, buy cream cheese in bulk and serve it in a small container along with bulk bought crackers like wholemeal rice crackers. Alternatively, cut a few slices of cheese off a block.

For yoghurt tubs, it’s cheaper and healthier to buy plain yoghurt in bulk and portion it into containers with fruit and a little flavouring like vanilla or a touch of honey.

Just about anything that you can buy in multi-packs can be purchased in larger packs and portioned out to save money and reduce waste

The children who have represented our school in the round robin winter sport program will participate in a day Lightning Carnival program on Friday 28th June (week 9) against students from Deanmore, Doubleview, Karrinyup, Scarborough and Yuluma Primary Schools. Netball and Soccer fixtures will be at Yuluma Primary School in Innaloo. Football players will play fixtures at Karrinyup Primary School. All matches start from 9.45am and conclude at approximately 2.10pm at the different venues. Parents and friends are very welcome to come along and support their children.

Once again, the staff would be very grateful for assistance with umpires for soccer and possibly football (field and goal umpire). If you are available to assist, please let Iain Freeman (soccer teacher) or myself know asap.

Parents are kindly reminded that the children will require food for the whole day and a drink bottle of water, as the host school canteens are not for our use. Please refer to the Parent Information and Consent form that went home last week for further information regarding this carnival.

Good luck to all of the children and staff involved in this carnival. Go Newborough!

NEWBROs - The Champion Dads of Newborough Primary School

On Wednesday night the 5th of June we had a very successful Daddy/Daughter Hair Workshop at school with 10 Dads and daughters and the wonderful Chris from Moptops Hair. We learnt a lot, like how to brush our daughter’s hair without our girls screaming. There were plaits, braids and ponytails galore and a few very competitive dads. Most importantly it was a chance for busy dads to bond with their daughters. If you are keen to come along to the next Daddy/Daughter Hair Workshop, should we get the numbers, the Newbros will run another. Email newbrodads@gmail.com and say g’day and we will add you to the waitlist.

We have our first Newbro’s Winter Campout down at Dwellingup next weekend kindly kicked off by Paul Rosser, one of the Newbro dads. 40 kids and dads will surely have a great time, albeit staying warm by the bonfire. Tickets are sold out, but get involved like Paul did and throw something up on the NewBro’s Facebook and we can add it to the calendar. Mums please get onboard and search Facebook -> Newbro Dads and REQUEST TO JOIN. We need your help to get the Dads onboard and involved in Newbros and keep the Dads in the loop with what’s going on... it really is a worthwhile cause. Of course solo Mums are more than welcome, as are Grandads and any ex or future kids of Newborough Primary School.

A very quick big thanks to Mr. Worthy, Mr. Stenhouse, Ms. Tucknott, Amanda in the Canteen, Carly and Lucy and the P&C, Sharon, Kate and Laura in the office for all their support of the Newbros. You really help us make anything happen and we are truly lucky to have you. Until next time, the Newbros!

Ripper Reader Program

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Mums and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time!please see Mrs Tennant (vicki.tennant@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 9 or Mrs Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7 o.

Advertisement – Year 6

This term, the Year 6 classes have been working on advertising. We were set with some challenging, but exciting tasks. This involved creating posters, and radio ads for chocolates that came from our creative minds.

We have been working towards a television advertisement during music. Each group chose their own sweet to sell.

Most importantly, we tried our hardest and enjoyed the making of our advertisement.

The ads turned out to be brilliant, and really effective!

Here is an example, created by Elijah, George, Jude and Luke from Room 16.

Record Orders

In the last fortnight we received a record number of 115 orders in one day. A huge"Thank you" goes out to our impromptu helpers, as well as to one Grandfather who put his Italian heritage into practice by making our pizzas.

Winter Warmers

With the onset of the cold and wet weather, we tried a new Friday Recess Special, a hot milo and baked donut balls. This was quite popular so keep an eye out on the QuickCliq website for when we make it available again.

AFL Western Derby - Pie & Sausage Roll Day

The next Western Derby is fast approaching, so to coincide with that we are going to have another Pie & Sausage Roll Day on the last day of term. Stay tuned to the QuickCliq website for more information. As with the last day, all orders must be placed online.

Winter Sports

If your child is participating in Winter Sports this term, please make a note in the Additional Instructions section on the QuickCliq website so that their lunch can be prepared earlier

School Banking

One of the great things about school banking is that it’s designed to reward regular savers.  It doesn’t matter how much the kids deposit – what’s important is making saving a regular part of their weekly routine.   If your child hasn’t banked in a while, pop in next Wednesday to check how many tokens they’ve already earnt (tokens don’t expire each year).  This term we have 8 rewards to choose from with new goodies added every term.

And if the kids need any more motivation to save – it’s worth reminding them they earn a bonus 1.8% interest on their account (on top of their standard 0.5% interest) if they make at least one deposit and no withdrawals each calendar month.

See you before school next Wednesday in the library.

Sonia Johansen
School Banking Co-Ordinator

DoE Security

Keep an eagle eye on our school!

School Watch encourages the school community to report any suspicious activity in and around school grounds, after hours and on weekends, as well as during school holidays.

Telephone 1800 177 777 (freecall) or 13 14 44 (WA Police).

Please do not approach any individuals, just contact security and they will investigate the situation or contact the Police. Working together will help protect our school.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help . Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is in the link below
