Principal’s Introduction
Triple P – Positive Parenting
Since its launch in 2018, the Triple P Stay Positive campaign has provided 2600 parents with simple strategies to build strong, healthy relationships and confidentially manage their children’s behaviour, through the Triple P seminar called The Power of Positive Parenting.
Triple P is the most extensively researched parenting program in the world. Evidence based, it is designed to strengthen parent-child relationships, and to prevent and treat behaviour and emotional problems in children. It is for every parent of children at any age.
The parents of Kindergarten children will receive a brochure promoting Triple P. Copies for the brochure are also available at the front office.

Indigenous Veterans Commemorative Service
Last week our school was privileged to be invited to the Indigenous Veterans Commemorative Service held at the State War Memorial in Kings Park. Students Natalia Woods, Darryl Narkle and Reece Hansen joined Mrs Veronica Headland and myself at the Service. The theme for Reconciliation Week and this Service was ‘Grounded in Truth. Walk Together with Courage’. The Service recognised the wonderful commitment of Indigenous people to our Australian Services represented in every conflict since the Boer War right through to current serving personnel. During the Service we sat next to Phil ‘Magic’ Narkle, former Eagles footballer and current Indigenous Liaison Officer who kindly assisted us with the wreath laying. We were also honoured to have a photo taken with the Governor of Western Australia, Mr Kim Beazley, who kindly enquired about our school and spoke to the children and Mrs Headland.

Vale Mrs Claudette Ridout
We were very saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs Claudette Ridout on Thursday 30th May. Claudette had been a volunteer, hearing children read and supporting learning activities ever since moving to WA to be with her daughter. We only saw her on Monday so this came as quite a shock. We extend out sympathy to Claudette’s husband Tony and family. Claudette will be remembered for her passion supporting children learning to read, especially those who struggle a bit, and her lovely, caring manner. We will miss her greatly.
Ride, Walk, Scoot and Skate Day
On Thursday we held our annual Ride, Walk, Skate and Scoot day in the quadrangle area. Weren’t we so lucky with the weather. There were over a hundred and fifty students who participated enjoying the chaotic circuits set up around the quadrangle. This year we had two circuits. One for the years Pre-Primary to Year Two and a little more complicated course for the Years Four to Six students. The Year Threes could choose whichever course they felt most comfortable. Participants all received a sticker and the chance to win a raffle prize. Winners of the participation raffle were Scilla Blaine Year Two, and Ginger Graffin Year One, who both took home a backpack hydration pack that they can use when riding their bikes.
Many thanks to P&C President Wes Gregory and team who set up the courses and made sure it was a fun, learning experience.
After the event Mr Worthy spoke to all the children about safety and getting parent support when choosing to ride, walk, scoot and skate to school. We encourage this when the children are old enough, ready and weather permits.
Top Achievements
In the last newsletter I wrote about Sofie Clementi being in the squad for selection for the State 12’s Girls Hockey Squad. The final selections occurred over the long weekend in Bunbury and I am very pleased to announce that Sofie made the cut and is in the final squad to travel to Bendigo for the National Championships. Well done Sofie. We look forward to hearing how you and the team go.
I am also please to announce that Jude Shen has been offered a place in the Gifted and Talented Program at Perth Modern School commencing next year. This is a wonderful achievement as places are extremely competitive. Jude rated extremely highly in the very difficult testing and selection process. Well done Jude and best wishes for next year.
We are aware of several other students selected for various school based Gifted and Talented programs and sporting programs. They are all waiting for further the offers to be made by schools before making final choices.
Please let me know of any high achievements so I can let our school community know. We are very proud of all our students.
Makuru – Six Noongar Seasons
Cold and wet time of the year (fertility season) June - July
Makaru sees the coldest and wettest time of the year come into full swing. Traditionally, this was a good time of the year to move back inland from the coast as the winds turned to the west and south bringing the cold weather, rains and occasionally snow on the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.
As the waterways and catchments started to fill, people were able to move about their country with ease and thus their food sources changed from sea, estuarine and lake foods to those of the lands in particular the grazing animals such as the kangaroo. As well as a food source, animals provided people with many other things. For example, 'Yongar' or kangaroos not only provided meat but also 'bookas' (animal skin cloaks that were used as the nights became much cooler). Nothing was left; even the bones and sinews were used in the manufacturing of bookas and for hunting tools such as spears.
Makuru is also a time for a lot of animals to be pairing up in preparation for breeding in the coming season. If you look carefully, you might now see pairs of 'Wardongs' (ravens) flying together. You also notice these pairs not making the usual 'ark ark arrrrrk' that these birds are well known for when flying solo. Upon the lakes and rivers of the South West, you'll also start to see a large influx of the Black Swan or 'Mali' as they too prepare to nest and breed.
Flowers that will start to emerge include the blues and purples of the Blueberry Lilly (Dianella revoluta) and the Purple Flags (Patersonia occidentalis). As the season comes to a close, you should also start to notice the white flowers of the weeping peppermint (Agonis flexuosa) as the blues start to make way for the white and cream flowers of Djilba.

Visitors to the school
If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.
Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED
Payment of Incursions and Excursions – Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.
If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.
Non payment of future incursions or excursions
Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.
2019 Voluntary Contributions
Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.
While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.
- Reading Resources
- Mathematics Resources
- Art/Craft
- Technology
Total Contribution $60
The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.
If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.
Absentees
Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:
SMS: 0409 088 585 (preferred method)
Email: Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au
Phone: 9446 1025
Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.
For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.
Thank You
Administration Staff
Collecting Students during school hours
Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.
PBS Parent Workshop
Cold and Flu Season
Due to the Lastest Flu Outbreak our School Nurse has forwarded on information for parents on how to manage cold and flu infections.
Colds
Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:
- Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards.
- Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.
- Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)
- Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.
- Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.
- Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.
What to do if your child gets a cold
No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:
- Rest: This need not be in bed.
- Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or iceblocks to suck for older children.

Safety House
Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!
Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator
Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.
Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.
WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?
A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.
This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.
Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is below.
