Please Care For Your School

As part of the National Curriculum Standards, Newborough Primary School takes great care to ensure that we provide a safe environment for our students and staff. We undertake biannual playground safety review through KidsSafe and follow up promptly on their findings.

One area of annual concern is the level of sand in the sandpits – unfortunately, during after school play, some children carry sand outside of the Early Childhood and quadrangle playgrounds, filling our water coolers or spreading it on the grass and quadrangle and surrounding soft fall. This means that the levels of the sandpits become too low, the surrounding limestone walls are dangerously exposed and pose an injury risk to the students.

Our wonderful staff spend time each morning clearing up the messes made during this time, arranging for plumbers to attend to the clogged coolers, sweeping as much sand as they can, back into the appropriate place and clearing the areas of lost property and other debris (including dog poo). The sandpits are topped up at a great cost, funded by the P&C.

As per the Playground Guidelines, can parents please ensure that they supervise their children diligently after school finishes, making sure that children do not transport sand outside of any playground sandpit. The children are aware of the playground rules during school hours – the same rules apply outside of these hours.

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and Excursions

Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non payment of future incursions or excursions

Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.

2019 Voluntary Contributions

Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.

If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.

Absentees

Just a friendly reminder that if your child will be absent, please contact the School directly either by:

SMS:

0409 088 585 (preferred method)

Email:

Newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au

Phone:

9446 1025

Please include only the student’s name and room number, reason for absence and the date in any messages – the use of apostrophes, a colon or emoji results in the school receiving a blank message, and we are unable to accurately update your child’s record.

For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2017 sick with flu”.

Thank You
Administration Staff

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

Deputy News

Reporting to Parents:

Towards the end of the term, parents will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades.

Components of written reports

At Newborough Primary School, we follow theCurriculum, Assessment and Reporting Policy Guidelines set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for the accurate reporting of the Western Australian Curriculum. In turn, we have developed our own Curriculum, Assessing and Reporting Policy which can be found on our website.

In the policy, it will outline some of the components of the written report which states that all schools are to provide plain language reports to parents/carers at the end of each semester which:

  1. are readily understandable to those responsible for the student
  2. give an accurate and objective assessment of the student's progress and achievement
  3. include an assessment of the student's achievement in terms of the Western Australian achievement standards
  4. include, for subjects studied, an assessment of the student's achievement:
      -  in terms of the grades A, B, C, D and E (or an equivalent five-point scale/achievement descriptor), clearly defined in terms of Western Australian achievement standards, and
      -  in relation to the performance of the student's peer group.
  5. include information about the student's attitude, behaviour and effort in terms other than the five-point scale which is used as a measure of achievement
  6. include any additional information the school considers relevant, including an overall teacher comment.

In addition, for Pre-primary to Year 2, school reports are to include a description of the student's progress in personal and social learning.

Mid-year reporting – Some important information!

The achievement standards articulated in the Outline describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, in mid-year reports, teachers make a professional judgment regarding the level of achievement that the student is demonstrating relative to the achievement standard, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Thus, students demonstrating excellent achievement at that point in time are allocated an ‘A’ grade or ‘Excellent’ achievement, and students demonstrating satisfactory achievement are allocated a ‘C’ grade or ‘Satisfactory’ achievement.

The grades allocated by teachers mid-year are based on the curriculum taught in the child’s current year level. While this seems obvious, it is important to note that as your child progresses throughout their schooling, the curriculum, content and skills are hierarchal and harder. Just because your child achieved an ‘A’ or ‘Excellent’ achievement in the previous year, this does not mean that your child may demonstrate the same level of achievement the next year. Many students do find some concepts more difficult to grasp than others and this may also impact on their achievement grades fluctuating between different years and indeed between the Semester One Mid-year report and the Semester Two end of year report.

If your child has scored a lower achievement grade on their report than you have expected, then this will mean that your child has not demonstrated enough evidence to achieve that higher grade and this may be based on a variety of reasons such as not understanding the concepts properly, missing concepts or understandings or not assimilating to the harder work or expectations in their new year level. It may also be because they have not completed enough work to maintain a higher grade or because of absences during the term that have affected the grade. A discussion with the class teacher may help to work out the reasons why this may be.

Please do not be concerned if your child receives a ‘C’ grade allocation or a Satisfactory allocation. According to the Western Australian Curriculum, a Satisfactory achievement means that your child is achieving where they are expected to for that year level and therefore meeting the Achievement Standards. This is good news!

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade allocation or Limited or ‘E’ grade or Very Low and discuss an Individual Education Plan, SEN Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or a SEN or modified report for your child, if this is needed.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2019

As per last year, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Monday 1st July 2019. (Week 10, Term 2)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Edu Dance

As you would now be aware, Edu-Dance lessons have just started! The first lot of lessons have been lots of fun.

This year, due the constraints we are facing to use Karrinyup Sports Hall during school time, we are going to have two Edu-dance concerts, rather than just the one. We will have all of the classes timetabled to dance on a Wednesday perform their concert on WEDNESDAY 26th June at 1.40pm in our undercover area and all the classes timetabled to dance on a Thursday to perform on THURSDAY 27th JUNE at 1.40pm in our undercover area.

Students that have not paid are not able to participate in this program until the fee is paid in full. Please see Sharon Singleton as a matter of urgency if you need to organise payment still.

NAPLAN ONLINE

Thank you to all staff and parents for your support during the two week NAPLAN testing period. Overall, the tests ran relatively smoothly with only a few minor glitches during the tests. Both the Year 3 and Year 5 students were amazing with their behaviour and patience during this time. The purpose of the Online testing was to provide a better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. We will wait to see now when we receive the results from this year.

NAIDOC WEEK

Newborough Primary School will recognise NAIDOC Week (7-14th July) in Week 10 of this term. The therem for this year is VOICE, TREATY, TRUTH: Lets work together for a shared future.

The following information if from the NAIDOC Week website to provide you with background information on the theme.

We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future.

The Indigenous voice of this country is over 65,000 plus years old.

They are the first words spoken on this continent. Languages that passed down lore, culture and knowledge for over millennia. They are precious to our nation.

It’s that Indigenous voice that include know-how, practices, skills and innovations - found in a wide variety of contexts, such as agricultural, scientific, technical, ecological and medicinal fields, as well as biodiversity-related knowledge. They are words connecting us to country, an understanding of country and of a people who are the oldest continuing culture on the planet.

And with 2019 being celebrated as the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages , it’s time for our knowledge to be heard through our voice.

For generations, we have sought recognition of our unique place in Australian history and society today. We need to be the architects of our lives and futures.

For generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have looked for significant and lasting change.

Voice. Treaty. Truth. were three key elements to the reforms set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. These reforms represent the unified position of First Nations Australians.

However, the Uluru Statement built on generations of consultation and discussions among Indigenous people on a range of issues and grievances. Consultations about the further reforms necessary to secure and underpin our rights and to ensure they can be exercised and enjoyed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

It specifically sequenced a set of reforms: first, a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution and second, a Makarrata Commission to supervise treaty processes and truth-telling.

(Makarrata is a word from the language of the Yolngu people in Arnhem Land. The Yolngu concept of Makarrata captures the idea of two parties coming together after a struggle, healing the divisions of the past. It is about acknowledging that something has been done wrong, and it seeks to make things right.)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people want their voice to be heard. First Nations were excluded from the Constitutional convention debates of the 1800’s when the Australian Constitution came into force. Indigenous people were excluded from the bargaining table.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy.

In the European settlement of Australia, there were no treaties, no formal settlements, no compacts. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people therefore did not cede sovereignty to our land. It was taken away from us. That will remain a continuing source of dispute.

Our sovereignty has never been ceded – not in 1788, not in 1967, not with the Native Title Act, not with the Uluru Statement from the Heart. It coexists with the sovereignty of the Crown and should never be extinguished.

Australia is one of the few liberal democracies around the world which still does not have a treaty or treaties or some other kind of formal acknowledgement or arrangement with its Indigenous minorities.

A substantive treaty has always been the primary aspiration of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander movement.

Critically, treaties are inseparable from Truth.

Lasting and effective agreement cannot be achieved unless we have a shared, truthful understanding of the nature of the dispute, of the history, of how we got to where we stand.

The true story of colonisation must be told, must be heard, must be acknowledged.

But hearing this history is necessary before we can come to some true reconciliation, some genuine healing for both sides.

And of course, this is not just the history of our First Peoples – it is the history of all of us, of all of Australia, and we need to own it.

Then we can move forward together.

Let’s work together for a shared future.

The purpose for NAIDOC Week at Newborough Primary School is to develop greater understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture. Ther will be a number of whole school and in class activities happening. Please note the date for the following two assemblies to attend that help recognise NAIDOC Week.

CHOIR and INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Assembly: Friday 21st June 2019 Week 8

The choir is going to sing a range of NAIDOC/Indigenous/Australian songs at this assembly.

Some of the songs will be:

  • Djapana (Yothu Yindi song)
  • Life Line (a song about CY O’Connor)
  • You, Me and the Wide Open Sky

NAIDOC WEEK ASSEMBLY: Friday 5th July 2019 Week 10

Miss Phillips Year 6 Room 16 class will be running the NAIDOC WEEK assembly in Week 10.

Kings Park Excurion –Year 2

Kiya (hello).

The Year 2 classes took our education outdoors in an engaging cultural experience at Kings Park.

We were gifted with magnificent weather to enjoy the outdoor activities and take full advantage of the natural environment.

And even had a special visitor come to share our lunch.

Kings Park Education Officers treated us to an experience of Noongar men’s business in presenting the story: “Chunyart and the Cheeky Parrot.” We shared katijin (knowledge) about hunting, bush medicine, food, plants and Aboriginal art symbols, as well as learning some Whadjuk Noongar words.

The end of day exhaustion was momentary, as lively discussions on the bus home concluded our day.

The support of all of our volunteer parents allowed the day to be a success and provided us with the opportunity of extending our educational through hands on experiences.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.
