Principal’s Introduction

WELCOME BACK

After a very relaxed break everyone has arrived back for Term Two full of energy and vitality for another great term at Newborough PS. As always there is a lot of action to involve all students and families in learning and wellbeing engagement. This term we have Edu-Dance, NAPLAN Online (For the first time), Ride2School Day, Interschool Winter Sports, several class excursions, preparation for the Musical, Millennium Kids (Newbie Knights) workshop, NAIDOC Week and Student Reports at the end of term. Plus, lots more.

Staff commenced the term with the inaugural Ocean Net Conference at Doubleview PS. Ocean Net is our group of local schools – Scarborough, Yuluma, Doubleview, Deanmore and Newborough PS. The conference commenced with an Acknowledgement of Country by our own Mr Simon Zuvich. Simon is a Newborough parent and heads the State-wide Services Aboriginal Directorate, Teaching and Learning based in Padbury. We then had a keynote address by Ms Helen Street on the topic ‘Wellbeing’ which was most enlightening and topical given our focus on Mental Health. Staff then attended a range of concurrent sessions run by teachers from our local schools before concluding the day with moderation activities for like year levels comparing assessments in Writing. It was a great way to start the term with likeminded colleagues and re-acquaint with our team of fantastic staff.

Make sure you have a wonderful Term Two.

ANZAC SERVICE 2019

On the last day of Term One, Friday 12th April, the school commemorated a most meaningful ANZAC Service to the memory of Australian and New Zealand Servicemen and women who supported the Gallipoli campaign and wars and conflicts Australians have been involved in. This year we paid special respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have served in every conflict since Australia’s Federation in 1901 and for some before this time.

Our special guests included Mr Paul Denhert, Warrant Officer Class One and Regimental Sergeant Major of the 11/28th Battalion of the Royal Western Australia Regiment: School Board Chair, Mrs Yuliya Novik; P and C President, Mr Wes Gregory and Mrs Veronica Headland; Noongar Whadjuk Elder. Mr Denhert spoke about the similarity of our school values and the Army that he currently serves. He looked splendid in his formal Army uniform. Mrs Headland told us about her father and uncles who enlisted and fought in New Guinea during World War Two. Both speeches were very moving.

Sincere thanks to Deputy Principal, Karen Tucknott and Mrs Vicki Tennant who led and coordinated the event. Also to Mrs Mandy Morgan who once again sourced and made the magnificent bouquets, including banksias (School floral log). She also provided plants for each class that will be added to the school’s gardens as a living and growing reminder. What a great idea!

The event went extremely smoothly with the children performing at a very high level. The school’s values: - Respect, Teamwork, Kindness and Challenge Yourself shone through. The choir was superb.

The demeanour and behaviour of all students was exemplary, especially considering the coolness of the morning and being the last day of term. Student leaders Lily, Erika and Jude did a great job as MC’s and hosting our special guests.

NEWBRO DADS

Last Friday the Newbros where reinvigorated after a break of a year or so with a fantastic evening of Bangers and Bingo. Over 100 Dads, Grandads, Father figures including a solo Mum and kids enjoyed well-cooked hot dogs, cool drinks and nibbles before venturing to the Undercover area for three games of exciting Bingo. The kids and Father figures shared the pleasure of chasing the smaller line prizes and each of the three BIG full card winners. Newbros Leader, Wade Freeman, sourced fantastic sponsorship from local businesses including ‘The Secret Butchers’, SCITECH, Yelo Café’ at Trigg and Umberto’s Bakehouse and Continental Deli at Gwelup. Their generosity really helped make the night a huge success. If you are at any of these businesses, please say thank you.

There will be more events and opportunities for Father figures to work with their kids, share the importance of being an active Dad and helping each other throughout the year. Congratulations Wade and all involved.

PERIMETER FENCE

The works to install our new perimeter fence commenced on Tuesday 7th May and is scheduled for completion on Thursday 30th May. There will be a lot of work happening around the school during this period. The contractor will be responsible for work safety fencing and scheduling to minimise disruption to the school.

Once the fencing is completed we will arrange signage and how we manage entry and exit to the school.

Please be aware that gates will be opened at 7:45am and closed and locked at 4:00pm. Special arrangements will be made with authorised groups using the facilities outside this time period. There will be a trial period as we work through new arrangements so if you anticipate or observe something we need to consider please let me know.

VEGIE PATCH

You may recall I put out a plea for assistance to help clean up and prepare our school’s overgrown vegie patch ready for planting. I had several responses including a grandparent visiting family from England. Mr Roger Joyce (Pictured), grandparent of Erica and Margo Watts, spent a whole day ripping into the heavily overgrown weeds and invasive couch grass freeing up a whole row of wicker garden beds and starting the yard clean up.

Roger did a fantastic job in the his limited time. We really appreciate his voluntary work and look forward to getting further work done in preparation for some fantastic winter vegie planting shortly. Quite a few students jumped into help during their breaks and their enthusiasm was infectious.

Help needed

There is still a heap to do and we really need a small group who are prepared to work with our enthusiastic Newbie Knight Gardening team and classes if they take up the offer. If you can help or know of someone please let me know.

Thank you Roger for a great start.

IDEAS, ISSUES AND CONCERNS

I have a strong philosophy and practice that if anyone has a problem, issue or concern that they make contact with the school as soon as possible. Don’t get in a tizz, let things build up or even worse gossip. I welcome parents raising concerns with me no matter how big or small, controversial or trivial so that they can be understood and acted upon. Come and talk to my staff or I. We don’t always get things right and we don’t always see problems until they are raised appropriately with us but we will always endeavour to work things through with agreed solutions.

We love good ideas too!

NEWBIE KNIGHTS

Hopefully work will commence on our Newbie Knights Sustainability shed and outdoor classroom shortly. We are all signed up and awaiting final approvals. Meanwhile our Knights team has been announced. I just couldn’t tell half of the 58 applicants that they were not selected so, with a large gulp, I have made all 58 students Knewbie Knights.Of these 26 were selected to work with Millenium Kids in the planning workshop later this term, but all will have the opportunity to do a range of Sustainability activities.

Each Knight will receive their name badge, like Jai’s (pictured), with the Knights logo and a passport.

The passport is an A5 sized booklet that includes a contract, goal planning and target page and a series of activities such as the Food Waste and Worm Farm sheet (pictured). Each time a Knight volunteers and undertakes a task they get a stamp on the chart towards their target. Other activities include paper, plastics, batteries and general waste collection, vegie gardens, tree planting and a Special Jobs page. We’ll develop more as we progress.

One of the passport features is that the Knewbie Knights and I will set targets that when achieved entitles the Knight to attend the big End of Year Barbecue that was a huge hit last year. Each Knight will need to do at least three different activities so they get a range of experiences and leadership opportunities. This week we will get our passports ready, watch the ABS’s ‘War on Waste’ and plan for a Waste Audit to be conducted after NAPLAN finishes. Any adult volunteer help, big or small would be greatly appreciated. We have a small team of parents and staff already so come and join the fun.

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

Account Reminders

Account reminders were sent out to families this week. This is a reminder of items still outstanding and may or may not include future incursions and excursions for the term. Payments are to please be made via direct deposit only

Payment of Incursions and Excursions - NO CASH PAYMENTS ACCEPTED

Payment of Incursions and Excursions

Newborough Primary School is a cashless school – all payments must please be made via internet banking only.

If you need assistance with making payment and would like a payment plan, please contact Sharon Singleton, Manager Corporate Services to make alternative arrangements.

Non payment of future incursions or excursions

Non payment of the incursion or excursion by the DUE DATE will result in your child not attending the event – they will be placed in another classroom while the incursion or excursion is taking place.

2019 Voluntary Contributions

Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2019. These fees were approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements, and remain at $60 per child.

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.

If you have not yet paid the contribution, please consider doing so as soon as possible as the funds directly benefit your child this year.

Collecting Students during school hours

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

Ripper Reader Program

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Mums and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time!please see Mrs Tennant (vicki.tennant@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 9 or Mrs Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7 o.

Deputy News

Reporting to Parents:

Towards the end of the term, parents will receive their child’s Semester One formal report via email. In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas taught is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10. Teachers use the Achievement Standards from the Western Australian Curriculum to assess students against to make valid judgements on your child’s grades.

Components of written reports

At Newborough Primary School, we follow theCurriculum, Assessment and Reporting Policy Guidelines set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for the accurate reporting of the Western Australian Curriculum. In turn, we have developed our own Curriculum, Assessing and Reporting Policy which can be found on our website.

In the policy, it will outline some of the components of the written report which states that all schools are to provide plain language reports to parents/carers at the end of each semester which:

  1. are readily understandable to those responsible for the student
  2. give an accurate and objective assessment of the student's progress and achievement
  3. include an assessment of the student's achievement in terms of the Western Australian achievement standards
  4. include, for subjects studied, an assessment of the student's achievement:
      -  in terms of the grades A, B, C, D and E (or an equivalent five-point scale/achievement descriptor), clearly defined in terms of Western Australian achievement standards, and
      -  in relation to the performance of the student's peer group.
  5. include information about the student's attitude, behaviour and effort in terms other than the five-point scale which is used as a measure of achievement
  6. include any additional information the school considers relevant, including an overall teacher comment.

In addition, for Pre-primary to Year 2, school reports are to include a description of the student's progress in personal and social learning.

Mid-year reporting – Some important information!

The achievement standards articulated in the Outline describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, in mid-year reports, teachers make a professional judgment regarding the level of achievement that the student is demonstrating relative to the achievement standard, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Thus, students demonstrating excellent achievement at that point in time are allocated an ‘A’ grade or ‘Excellent’ achievement, and students demonstrating satisfactory achievement are allocated a ‘C’ grade or ‘Satisfactory’ achievement.

The grades allocated by teachers mid-year are based on the curriculum taught in the child’s current year level. While this seems obvious, it is important to note that as your child progresses throughout their schooling, the curriculum, content and skills are hierarchal and harder. Just because your child achieved an ‘A’ or ‘Excellent’ achievement in the previous year, this does not mean that your child may demonstrate the same level of achievement the next year. Many students do find some concepts more difficult to grasp than others and this may also impact on their achievement grades fluctuating between different years and indeed between the Semester One Mid-year report and the Semester Two end of year report.

If your child has scored a lower achievement grade on their report than you have expected, then this will mean that your child has not demonstrated enough evidence to achieve that higher grade and this may be based on a variety of reasons such as not understanding the concepts properly, missing concepts or understandings or not assimilating to the harder work or expectations in their new year level. It may also be because they have not completed enough work to maintain a higher grade or because of absences during the term that have affected the grade. A discussion with the class teacher may help to work out the reasons why this may be.

Please do not be concerned if your child receives a ‘C’ grade allocation or a Satisfactory allocation. According to the Western Australian Curriculum, a Satisfactory achievement means that your child is achieving where they are expected to for that year level and therefore meeting the Achievement Standards. This is good news!

Your class and specialist teachers will, however, let you know if your child will be receiving a ‘D’ grade allocation or Limited or ‘E’ grade or Very Low and discuss an Individual Education Plan, SEN Plan (Students of Educational Needs), or a SEN or modified report for your child, if this is needed.

Reporting to Parents – Electronic Report Delivery Semester 1, 2019

As per last year, Newborough Primary School will again be delivering your child’s Semester 1 school report via email on Monday 1st July 2019. (Week 10, Term 2)

The benefits of an electronic report provide advantages for schools and the parent community including:

  • timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement. However, as the link to the reports only lasts for four weeks, it is vitally important that parents SAVE their child’s report ASAP.

To ensure you again receive your child’s report, it is imperative that your email address is correct with the school. If there have been any changes to your email/email addresses, please contact the school immediately.

We have also asked that for the purpose of different family circumstances, anyone requesting a copy of the report be sent to a second family member inform the school in writing via newborough.ps@education.wa.edu.au immediately please.

Please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Principal Karen Tucknott with any queries about the delivery of the reports electronically.

Edu Dance

As you would now be aware, Edu-Dance lessons have just started! The first lot of lessons have been lots of fun.

This year, due the constraints we are facing to use Karrinyup Sports Hall during school time, we are going to have two Edu-dance concerts, rather than just the one. We will have all of the classes timetabled to dance on a Wednesday perform their concert on WEDNESDAY 26th June at 1.40pm in our undercover area and all the classes timetabled to dance on a Thursday to perform on THURSDAY 27th JUNE at 1.40pm in our undercover area.

Students that have not paid are not able to participate in this program until the fee is paid in full. Please see Sharon Singleton as a matter of urgency if you need to organise payment still.

NAPLAN ONLINE

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

NAPLAN is just one part of a child’s school program, and we encourage them on the day to simply try their best. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of services by coaching providers.

This year, our Year 3 and 5 students will be sitting NAPLAN online in Weeks 3 and 4 of this term (Tuesday 14th May to Friday 24th May).

Regards

Karen Tucknott
Deputy Principal

2019 Chaplaincy

Here at Newborough Primary we are guided by our values of Respect, Kindness, Teamwork and Challenging Yourself, as a part of our values we believe in being able to provide pastoral care for our students as part of our aim in achieving academic excellence. Working with our Student Services Team, Chaplaincy is an important part of our strategy. Our School Chaplaincy Service is provided through YouthCARE by Ali Dee.

YouthCARE Chaplains provide holistic pastoral care to students, school staff and members of the community, irrespective of their faith or cultural backgrounds. The pastoral care provided has a broad scope and includes one on one and programmed group sessions addressing physical and mental health issues, social and values education, behaviour management, emotional support and professional referrals among other out workings.

Although the school strongly supports our Chaplain, we understand that you, the parent, may have objections to your child/children interacting with or accessing the services of the Chaplain.

YouthCARE Chaplaincy is an ‘Opt-Out’ programme, and thus if we do not hear from you the assumption is that you give permission for your child to access Chaplaincy services if needed.

If you do object please advise a member of the administration team so your child/children can access help through other avenues of our student services team.

AFL Western Derby Lunch

Our special Western Derby pie and sausage roll lunch was a great success. A huge thank you to the volunteers who worked hard to get all of the 318 items of food and drink out on time. The children loved it so much (see some of the excited faces below) that we've decided to do it again for the next Western Derby in July.

We do have a few Party Pies and 1/2 size Sausage Rolls left so these will be on sale over the counter, for $1.50, each Friday until sold out. Be quick!

New Term 2 Menu

See new menu for Term 2. There are additional Daily Specials for Monday and Wednesday as well as some new Hot Meals. This menu will be added to with even more winter warmers as the weather gets colder.

You will notice that there has been a small price adjustment for some of the menu items. Every effort is made to keep menu items as affordable as possible, however on occasion it is necessary to make price adjustments.

Snacks

Children love snacks and we try to provide both sweet snacks and 'healthy' sweet snacks. Below are pictures of some of the healthy snacks available at the Canteen. The Muffins (Blueberry and Apple & Sultana) contain both wholemeal flour and bran. The Bliss Balls (Choc Crackle and Milo) contain ingredients such as coconut, oats, sunflower seeds, tahini, maple syrup, dates and cranberries.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help . Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website is:
