Principal’s Introduction

Parking Safety

We have had several incidences of dangerous practices reported in regards to parking over the last couple of weeks. This includes an incident where a car reversed into a stationary vehicle in the Karrinyup Sports Hall car park causing damage and putting young students at risk. The vehicle concerned left the scene without stopping and has been reported to police.

Please make sure you observe safe practice by:

  • Parking in designated parking bays only
  • Not parking or dropping off/picking up children in the service entry driveway off Wilding Street
  • Not parking on the verges of local households opposite the school
  • Ensuring children exit/enter vehicles on the verge side not road side of vehicles
  • Training children to act responsibly, remain observant, walk and obey safety rules around all vehicles
  • Use the crosswalk to cross Newborough Street

Sustainability Launch 2019

At last Friday’s Year 6 Room 15, Ms Danker’s assembly, I launched the school’s exciting direction for Sustainability initiatives at Newborough for 2019 and beyond. Last year the Newbie Knights were formed with a group of eager Year 3s and sprinkling of children from Year 4. The aim being to build sustainability and leadership from students up rather than the failed model of teachers down. We kept losing our champion teachers.

The enthusiastic Newbie Knights team collected foodscraps for the delapidated worm farm, planted trees and grew vegetables. We held regular planning meetings and allocated jobs. Behind the scenes we applied for funding from a SUEZ Community Grant to build a home and outdoor classroom for our sustainability activities, applied to be part of the City of Stirlings’ ‘Living Green School Pilot Program’ and applied for funding for a new worm farm and training through the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants. On Friday we received an acknowledgement letter and sticker for our fifth year as a Waste Wise Accredited School.

We were fortunate to gain a grant from SUEZ for $14 500 to build our shed and outdoor classroom. Mr Daniel Van Zeen from SUEZ presented the Knights with a large cheque at the assembly. Hopefully we will get the shed up during the next school holidays.

The Mayor of the City of Stirling presented the school with a Certificate of Participation in the Living Green Program at the assembly. As part of this project Millenium Kids will do a whole day workshop and some follow up with Newbie Knights to determine which Sustainability activities we would like to do this year. The project also provides some teacher relief and links to existing City projects such as tree planting.

Following the success of the Newbie Knights last year we will extend the number of Knights. Next week I will ask interested students from years 3-6 to submit an expression of interest application to become a Newbie Knight. Places will be limited to around 20 – 25 students. Already I have received considerable interest.

I would also like to get interested parents and staff on board once we have established our direction.

Violence In Schools ‘Let’s Make a Stand Together’ State Government Action

The Minister for Education, Hon Sue Ellery MLC, is leading the charge to make sure every student and staff member feels safe, nurtured and supported to learn whilst at school. Fortunately violence is not often experienced at Newborough Primary School, however, it is something we need to remain vigilant and prepared to ensure does not occur and is dealt with decisively should it arise.

Violence is never acceptable as it can cause psychological and physical harm to those involved, as well as disruption to teaching and learning.

The State Government has released a Statement to address violence in schools. It sets out 10 actions to help schools staff, families and communities work together on this complex issue. Programs and resources will be available for parents to support their children and where appropriate parents and staff will work closely to ensure their children maintain positive behaviour at school. A copy of the Statement is available on the Department’s website at the link below.

http://www.education.wa.edu.au/

It is important to understand that these changes focus on students who have intentionally been physically aggressive towards others. Students with a disability who either cannot manage their behaviour or do not intend to harm others are not the target of this plan.

As parents, you also play a vital role. Your children benefit from your modelling and rewarding positive behaviour. I look forward to your ongoing support to keep our school a safe place for all.

Complaints Process

At Newborough Primary School we take formal complaints very seriously. Most complaints and issues can be resolved quickly and amicably. Parents, staff and community members are encouraged to raise concerns as soon as they are identified. The school’s ‘Complaints Handling Process’ is clearly outlined on the school’s website and brochures available in the front office.

Our aim is to:

  • ensure that complaints lodged at the School are resolved in a prompt and efficient manner.
  • promote the highest standard of professionalism in dealing with our community.

Staff at Newborough School are responsible for managing the resolution of disputes and complaints lodged with us.

We will make every effort to promptly resolve disputes and complaints lodged with us according to the principles of procedural fairness.

You should provide the following information when making a complaint:

  • your name and contact details;
  • copies of any relevant correspondence or documents relating directly to the complaint;
  • the nature of the complaint; and
  • what you consider is needed to resolve the complaint.

In the case of a verbal complaint, where you do not want to be identified or to lodge the complaint in writing, we will endeavour to work directly with you to resolve the matter.

We will acknowledge written complaints within 5 school days. We seek to resolve local complaints within 14 days. If because of the serious nature of the complaint, it is deemed necessary to forward it on to another section of the Department, we will do this without delay. This section is known as the Standards and Integrity Unit.

In all cases you will be kept informed of the progress of your complaint.

The school reports the effectiveness of the complaints process to the School Board each year. The Board is not responsible for handling individual complaints.

Save the dates: Tuesday 3rd December and Wednesday 4th December

All students from Year 3 to Year 6 will be performing in the 2019 school musical to be held at the Churchlands Concert Hall on Tuesday 3rd December and Wednesday 4th December. Please do not hesitate to contact either Karen Tucknott or Andria Snelson in regards to the musical. Thankyou.

HARMONY DAY – Thursday 21ST March 2019

Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Harmony Day is held every year on 21st Marc and this day also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

This year we are inviting all students, staff and parents to wear orange on Thursday 21st March as orange is the official Harmony Day colour.

NAPLAN Online 2019

This year, all students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the annual NAPLAN tests online. The assessment window for NAPLAN Online is from Tuesday 14th May to Friday 24th May 2019. Newborough Primary School will be holding a one hour information evening on NAPLAN Online for any interested Year 3 and 5 parents on Monday 11th March from 6-7pm in the school library. Please do not hesitate to contact either Mr Stenhouse or Miss Tucknott if you have queries in regards to NAPLAN Online 2019.

Why do students do NAPLAN?

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

What is assessed?

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. In 2019 most students across Australia will sit NAPLAN online. Feedback in the first year of NAPLAN Online showed that students engaged well with online assessments. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test automatically adapts to a student’s test performance. The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance. Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.

NAPLAN Online is not a test of keyboard skills. There are variations in how fast and well a student can type – just as there are variations in how fast and well a student can write by hand. Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper. To get an idea of what the online assessment looks like, visit the public demonstration site at nap.edu.au How can I help my child prepare? Help your child prepare by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply try their best. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Ensuring students are familiar with using devices, typing on them and navigating through programs are a part of student learning and a requirement of the Australian Curriculum from the first year at school. ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of coaching providers. NAPLAN is about assessing learning progress in literacy and numeracy.

Participation in NAPLAN

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. You should first discuss the use of any disability adjustments for your child with your child’s teacher. A formal exemption may be granted for a student with disability that severely limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Your school principal and your local test administration authority can give you more information on NAPLAN Online disability adjustments or the process required to gain a formal exemption.

How is my child’s performance measured?

Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each assessment. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student has demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level. A NAPLAN individual student report will be issued by your child’s school later in the year. If you do not receive a report, you should contact your child’s school.

How are NAPLAN results used?

  • Students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers. Teachers use results to better identify students who would benefit from greater challenges or extra support.
  • Schools use results to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
  • School systems use results to review programs and support offered to schools.
  • The community can see average school NAPLAN results at

https://myschool.edu.au/

For more information about NAPLAN:

  • contact your child’s school
  • contact your local test administration authority at

http://nap.edu.au/contacts/test-administration-authorities-contacts

  • For information about how personal information for NAPLAN is handled by ACARA, visit

NEWBOROUGH CARES

The cupboard is bare!

We know that our school community here at Newborough cares for others. At times, within our school community and the wider community, people need some help and we want to be able to meet some of that. To do this we are going to offer the opportunity for families to donate non-perishable food supplies that can then be distributed in hampers as needed. Some of this will also be given to the Salvation Army to support their community programs or another school that is in a difficult situation.

Some suggestions of what to donate : long life milk, tins of tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, cereal, pasta meals in a packet, tinned vegetables, tinned soup, muesli bars, rice cakes, rice sauces, biscuits, crackers. Think about things that can be put together as a basic mea…

The other option is for people to donate a $10 Woolworths gift card. This would be used by me (not given to families) when there is an immediate need that the stock I have doesn’t meet.

The plan is for families at Newborough to bring food items to Room 11 before school during week 8 (25th – 29th March), any day that week.

Thanks,

Ali Dee

Sports News

Our annual faction swimming carnival for all students in Years 4 – 6 will be held this Friday from 10.15am – 2.30pm at Churchlands Senior High School. All parents and friends are welcome to come along and support their children and friends. The children have been informed of their events and all children; despite their swimming ability, have been included in events to allow them to enjoy the carnival atmosphere and to be a part of their faction team. I have endeavoured to ensure that all children have been placed in events that suit their swimming capabilities. The novelty events are held in shallow water and give some of the students who have limited swimming skills, the opportunity to participate and further develop their water confidence skills as well as represent their faction in an event.

Many thanks to all of the parents who were able to bring their child(ren) to the pool over the past four weeks to give them the opportunity to develop their swimming skills, endurance and water confidence in preparation for the carnival. I have greatly appreciated the help parents gave to assist which included money collection, roll marking, pool supervision, timing, recording, supervising younger children and packing away at the conclusion of the training session.

If you volunteered to assist at the carnival, please look out for a blue note in your child’s bag which went home on Monday. Once again, I had more volunteers than we have job placements for. A huge thank you to all of these parents. If you did not get a job this year; as it is forecast to be a warm day, maybe you could assist one of the many parents who will be volunteering by giving them a short break from their role so that they can have a comfort break? On Friday morning, Mr Stenhouse and I will be very grateful for any assistance at the pool to set up the shelters, put up the bunting and put the chairs out for the competitors and staff/volunteers. We will be arriving at the pool around 8.15am. Please meet us there if you are able to assist us.

The pool is located off Hale Road, behind the tennis courts and alongside the main sport oval. Parents are reminded not to park in any numbered bays. These bays are strictly for Churchlands SHS staff only. Parking along the side streets is permitted off Hale Road, but please do not park on home owner’s verges! Please bring along a chair for your comfort. Unfortunately, there will not be a coffee van available so please bring all your own food and drink supplies for the day. Parents are respectively requested not to visit or stand nearby to their child(ren) in their bays at any time during the carnival unless requested to do so by the NPS staff.

On behalf of the Newborough staff, I would like to wish every child an enjoyable carnival and the very best of luck to them and their faction team.

Thank you

Kris Williams

Canteen News

Parents and children have been supporting the Canteen so well. This month we exceeded the most orders ever placed online in one day, being 88 orders! Thank you to all the volunteers who pitched in, particularly at the last minute, to assist. One child even stopped to thank one of the volunteers for "...making my special lunch".

With the hot weather returning, icy cold Fruit Kebabs were sold over the counter. We appreciate the time of one Grandfather who put them together. The children are enjoying the increased variety of snacks available, those in the below picture appeared at the Canteen window within minutes of the Recess siren.

Homemade Lasagne is now the only Lasagne on offer. Made from a traditional recipe, we hope the children are enjoying it.

Keep an eye on the notice board on the wall outside the Canteen, and on the QuickCliq website for limited over the counter specials.

School Banking

All kids should have received a 2019 School Banking Program from the Commonwealth Bank, together with a reminder that we bank every Wednesday morning before school in the library (8:10 to 8:30). It’s been great to see some new faces join our banking program in recent weeks and welcome back our regular savers.

We believe the Newborough School Banking program is an important way to teach kids about saving money. If you’re interested in knowing more, feel free to download the info pack or come and see me.

Community News

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website below.
