Principal’s Introduction

Newborough P&C

The P&C had a terrific turn out last Tuesday for their AGM. There were eighteen parents and several apologies. All the Office Bearers from last year were nominated and re-elected into their positions for 2019. This team exudes enthusiasm, teamwork and experience and will ensure the P&C has another fantastic year. I encourage all parents to get on board with the P&C. The P&C makes a great contribution to the school and is a lot of fun. The next meeting on Monday 25th March will seek input on events for the year and decide where to expend funds in support of students and the school. I hope to see you there.

Newborough School Board 2019

On Monday 25th February the School Board met for the first time in 2019. The Board welcomed three newly elected parent members Mrs Rebecca Mitchell, Mr Callan Rose and Mr Sean Johnson. Our new members replace Mr Matt Gaunt, Ms Jerelyn Tierney and Mrs Krys Hiscock. Mr Gaunt, who has been on the Board for six years, five of these as Chairperson. Matt has been a wonderful Chair, mentor and advocate for the Newborough Board. I have greatly appreciated working with him for the benefit of our school. He has kindly offered to provide support to our newly elected Board Chair, Ms Yuliya Novik and Deputy Board Chair Mr Callan Rose.

Mr Gary Pittard also attended as our potential new Community Representative replacing Dr Irene Froyland who so admirably represented the Newborough community for the last five years. Mr Pittard will be formally elected and welcomed at the next meeting.

The first meeting also endorsed Mr Ian Sherborne as our Patron for another year. Ian brings a love of the school, great knowledge of the history and culture of the school and is a wonderful mentor to all.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) Class Award

Our first STEAM Class Award goes to Imani Hyder from Miss Kos’ Year 4 class. Each assembly the host class teacher is invited to select a student whom they believe best epitomises the virtues of STEAM against a set of criteria. Congratulations Imani.

"Imani is a reliable and diligent student. She challenges herself in all areas of STEAM and is a pleasure to teach. Imani pays close attention to details and always works to the best of her ability. She is a fantastic team member, working hard not only for herself, but also to support her peers. Imani is often the one guiding those around her, ensuring that everyone understands the task at hand and that everyone gets a fair go. She enjoys a challenge and always goes above and beyond to produce detailed work. Well done, Imani!"

Works Progress - Fence

Earlier this week I met with Building Management and Works (BMW) and a group of prospective contractors who are set to tender for the construction of our school fence. The tendering process closes on the 8th of March. The successful tenderer will be announced about two weeks later and then a start-up meeting will occur. Given this time frame it is possible that construction may commence before the term break and continue through the holidays.

Our new fence has been carefully designed to protect the school, students and staff from unwanted visitors who cause considerable stress and damage (Averaging $70 000 a year over the last five years) yet still provide that community feel that is so important. Hazlitt Field will be enclosed and I will have the capacity to lock this should dog owners and visitors disrespect our property. The intent is to allow responsible visitors access to both sports fields outside school speed zone hours (7:00am – 4:00pm) or when a sanctioned activity is occurring.

Reminders

Collecting Students during school hours.

Parents/guardians are reminded that if they are collecting students during school time they are required collect a sign out pass and provide this to their child’s teacher from the front office. We do this for safety, security and accountability for student wellbeing.

After School Play

Most parents are vigilant supervising their children’s after school play. Please make sure you follow our school rules during any play sessions on the school site.

Last week a younger student decided to collect a whole pile of sticks pushing them into the sand whilst the parent was watching. These was left overnight and had to be removed by the Gardener the following day. We do not allow sticks or dangerous items in the sandpits.

Making matters worse was that, at considerable expense, we had just had all the sandpits filtered to remove any foreign matter making the sandpits safe.

Please vacate playgrounds by 4:00pm. Shortly our school fence will be erected and gates will be closed at 4:00pm so staff can prepare the school for the next day.

BUNURU – Noongar Season for February/March

Bunuru is the hottest part of the year with little to no rainfall.

People would stay close to the coast and to reliable water sources due to the drying up of water bodies inland.

Fish were trapped and speared. They made up a large part of the diet and fish bones were a good source of calcium.

Many reptiles including Kurda (goannas) lay their eggs at this time and the Kabart (dugite snake) may be active during long hot days.

Visitors to the school

If you are visiting the school to deliver your child’s lunch, hat etc or volunteering in a classroom, please ensure that you sign in at the front desk. This is a risk management procedure to ensure that all people on school grounds are accounted for in case of emergency and for the safety of our children.

2019 Voluntary Contributions

The Voluntary Contributions fees have been established and approved by the School Board, in line with Department of Education requirements. The contribution fee for 2019 will remain at $60 per child.

While contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching/learning programs will be enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement expenditure in the following areas.

  • Reading Resources
  • Mathematics Resources
  • Art/Craft
  • Technology

Total Contribution $60

The P&C contribution has now increased to $30 per child for 2019.

Payment is requested at the commencement of the school year.

Student Update Forms

Student update forms were sent out at the beginning of our school year and were due to be returned by Friday February 22. Thank you to parents who have returned these. It is much appreciated.

These forms are to update any important information for each child within our school, as circumstances and information may change from year to year.

Please note: If you have no changes, we still require you to return the form to your class teacher for our records. This includes families with more than one child.

If you have misplaced your forms, additional copies can be printed. Please request a new copy from our office ladies.

Ripper Reader Program

The Ripper Reader program has been a great success over several years. We have had hard working Mums and Grandparents assisting and supporting many students with their reading skills. There has been so much positive feedback from students, parents and teachers and we all agree it is making a huge difference to the confidence of our students.

If you are interested in joining our fantastic Ripper Reader team, it might only involve 10-20 minutes of your time! please see Mrs Tennant (vicki.tennant@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 9 or Mrs Murray (nadine.murray@education.wa.edu.au) in Room 7 o.

All students from Year 3 to Year 6 will be performing in the 2019 school musical to be held at the Churchlands Concert Hall on Tuesday 3rd December and Wednesday 4th December. HARMONY DAY – Thursday 21ST March 2019

Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. Harmony Day is held every year on 21st Marc and this day also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

This year we are inviting all students, staff and parents to wear orange on Thursday 21st March as orange is the official Harmony Day colour.

NAPLAN Online 2019

This year, all students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the annual NAPLAN tests online. The assessment window for NAPLAN Online is from Tuesday 14th May to Friday 24th May 2019. Newborough Primary School will be holding a one hour information evening on NAPLAN Online for any interested Year 3 and 5 parents on Monday 11th March from 6-7pm in the school library. Please do not hesitate to contact either Mr Stenhouse or Miss Tucknott if you have queries in regards to NAPLAN Online 2019.

Why do students do NAPLAN?

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

What is assessed?

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. In 2019 most students across Australia will sit NAPLAN online. Feedback in the first year of NAPLAN Online showed that students engaged well with online assessments. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test automatically adapts to a student’s test performance. The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance. Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.

NAPLAN Online is not a test of keyboard skills. There are variations in how fast and well a student can type – just as there are variations in how fast and well a student can write by hand. Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper. To get an idea of what the online assessment looks like, visit the public demonstration site at nap.edu.au How can I help my child prepare? Help your child prepare by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply try their best. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Ensuring students are familiar with using devices, typing on them and navigating through programs are a part of student learning and a requirement of the Australian Curriculum from the first year at school. ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of coaching providers. NAPLAN is about assessing learning progress in literacy and numeracy.

Participation in NAPLAN

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. You should first discuss the use of any disability adjustments for your child with your child’s teacher. A formal exemption may be granted for a student with disability that severely limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background. Your school principal and your local test administration authority can give you more information on NAPLAN Online disability adjustments or the process required to gain a formal exemption.

How is my child’s performance measured?

Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each assessment. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student has demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level. A NAPLAN individual student report will be issued by your child’s school later in the year. If you do not receive a report, you should contact your child’s school.

How are NAPLAN results used?

  • Students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.
  • Teachers use results to better identify students who would benefit from greater challenges or extra support.
  • Schools use results to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
  • School systems use results to review programs and support offered to schools.
  • The community can see average school NAPLAN results at:

https://www.myschool.edu.au/

For more information about NAPLAN:

  • contact your child’s school
  • contact your local test administration authority at

http://nap.edu.au/contacts/test-administration-authorities-contacts

  • For information about how personal information for NAPLAN is handled by ACARA, visit:

2019 Faction Sport Leaders

Last Friday at the school assembly, the Year 5 Vice-Captains and the Year 6 Captains received their faction badges. Congratulations to these students for being voted by their Year 4 – 6 peers to represent their faction. These children, will have many leadership responsibilities which will include distributing and collecting equipment for children from the sport shed every recess and lunch time on a three-week faction rotation roster, maintaining a safe and clean sport shed, putting the tennis equipment out for before school, recess and lunch play and returning the equipment and storing it safely at the conclusion of lunch time. They will also be asked to assist their faction teachers at sport carnivals and prepare and deliver sport reports for the assemblies when required. These are just some of the many tasks and leadership skills that these students will be required to do. I know that all of them will perform their roles superbly and demonstrate to their peers and teachers why they were elected to be their faction leaders for 2019.

Faction Swimming Carnival

Our annual faction swimming carnival is just over 2 weeks away. It will be held on Friday 15th March at Churchlands Senior High School for all students in years 4 – 6. Many Year 4 – 6 children have been training at Churchlands SHS over the past 2 weeks for this event. There are only three afternoon training sessions left on Tuesday and Thursday’s from 3.30 – 4.30pm at Churchlands SHS. A huge thank you to all the parents and guardians who have been able to get their children to training and have also assisted with timing and recording. I really appreciate your assistance. A huge thank you to our staff who have also given up their afterschool planning and preparation time to support me at training. I also, really appreciate your assistance.

All students will receive their excursion and consent forms for this carnival today – Wednesday 27 February. This form MUST be completed and returned to your classroom teacher and payment made on line by Friday 8th March (2 weeks today).

I am also sending home a parent helpers request form for parents to nominate for jobs to do at the carnival. We are so fortunate to have so many parents who are very willing to assist at our carnivals and other sporting events The children and staff really appreciate parent assistance and support to ensure the carnivals run smoothly and are memorable for those attending and participating. If you are able to assist at the carnival, please complete the form and return it to your child’s classroom by this Friday, 1st March to ensure I have plenty of time to prepare the necessary paperwork to ensure the carnival has the required volunteers to assist and to advise volunteering parents of their jobs prior to the carnival.

Thank you

Daily Specials

We have changed and upgraded some of the Daily Specials as seen in the pictures below.

Monday - Beef burger patties are no longer bought in and are made with freshly minced meat, bacon and onion. The burgers now also include tomato and lettuce.

Wednesday - Chicken Fried Rice is now the Wednesday special. Included in the Fried Rice is carrot, onion, peas, corn and egg.

Friday - A new Supreme pizza has been added to the menu. It's made with ham, cheese, red capsicum, mushrooms, olives and slow cooked pizza sauce. The ingredients are chopped small so the flavour is not too strong.

Pikelets are always a popular snack and we made them even tastier this week by making mini Pikelet Stacks (with strawberry, banana and blueberry) which the children enjoyed.

Keep an eye on the Canteen Notice Board on the wall outside the Canteen for limited over the counter specials.

Attached is the Term 1 menu for your reference.

Safety House

Newborough Primary School has been a proud supporter of the Safety House Program in our community for many years. We currently have 9 safety houses in our neighbourhood. The Safety House Program is always looking for new volunteers from the local community to become a ‘Safety House’, if this interests you, please email halijah.hyder@gmail.com for more details. FEELING UNSURE? KNOCK ON A SAFETY HOUSE DOOR!

Halijah Hyder - Safety House Coordinator

Are you interested in safety for kids in your local community? It’s easy to help and you could make a difference.

Safety House is a community based “Good Neighbour” program of volunteer householders organised by a local Safety House Coordinator. It’s easy to be a Safety House, it will cost you very little for a 3 year Working with Children Card and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. The program is supported by the school and the local Parents Association. You can make a difference for kids in your local community.

WHO CAN BE A SAFETY HOUSE?

A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel times and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door. This is to make sure that a child in need will find someone at home if they knock on the Safety House door for help. Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street. If you have a dog it should be secured behind a fence at the rear of the building or be kept under control in the house.

This is to make sure that a young child will be able to find the Safety House door easily and will not be frightened away.

Before you can be a Safety House, any eligible adult who is likely to help a child at the door must have a valid Working with Children Card. Also everyone living in the house aged fourteen and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House. Your local Safety House Committee will help you fill out a simple Safety House WA application form. We need to make sure that anyone who might answer the door at a Safety House has been carefully checked out.

For further information please fill in the coupon below and leave it at your local School Office or you can contact the Safety House Head Office direct by email at safety@safetyhousewa.org.au and our website below.
